LOCATION [BEIRUT, LEBANON] BUILDING TYPE [COMMERCIAL] PROFESSOR [RANA ABUDAYYEH] PUBLISHED IN THE IDEA JOURNAL: TALES FROM THE GREEN LINE: UNBUILT INTERIORITIES AND THE POST-WAR IMAGINARY

In the heart of Beirut, a decades-old unfinished structure stands as an informal memorial to the Lebanese war. The surrounding environment reflects the city’s endurance and resilience during years of civil war and political unrest. Beirut’s landscape bears the marks of its turbulent history, with the old and new, the ruin and the recovered, coexisting.

In response, the design proposal aims to revitalize both the Egg and Beirut by fostering community engagement across generations. The project envisions a vibrant nightclub, bringing back the lively nightlife that was prominent before the Lebanese Civil War. The Egg’s cinema is preserved to honor its original design, while the lower level is adapted for parkour, attracting the younger generation. By keeping the war scars on the Egg as a remembrance and creating open spaces for political expression, this project honors the past and aims to rebuild the future.

RIVER CANE + CAFE LOCATION [MARFA, TX] BUILDING TYPE [COMMERCIAL] PROFESSOR [HOJUNG KIM]

Nestled in the desert landscape of Marfa, Texas, this project embraces traditional adobe construction while exploring the artistic philosophies of Donald Judd and Ibram Lassaw.

Judd, captivated by Marfa’s authenticity, sought to integrate art within architectural spaces to enhance three-dimensionality. Lassaw, inspired by natural forms and their connection to architecture, approached his sculptures with an organic, unplanned process—an idea that informs the fluid forms of this space.

Central to the design is river cane, a sustainable material native to North America. It is used to craft functional and sculptural elements, including seating pits, tables, shelving, and frames that serve as “infinite picture frames,” inviting viewers to engage with the surrounding landscape and the organic form. The use of river cane reflects Judd and Lassaw’s similar vision of pushing beyond the boundaries of three-dimensionality, showcasing how natural materials can enhance the relationship between art, architecture, and the environment.

Inspired by Rosalía’s song “Despechá,” this Glossier pop-up shop encourages natural beauty, confidence, and community. Designed for all ages, the space embodies the song’s vibrant rhythm and integrates movement and organized chaos, shown through a series of sketches and collages during the conceptual process.

The pop-up features an after-hours bar, reflecting the energetic essence of “Despechá,” a song about finding joy and freedom after heartbreak.

This lively setting invites visitors to purchase and try Glossier’s makeup in a social, judgment-free atmosphere, creating a sense of connection and celebration.

Wind turbines power key building functions, such as Olson Kundig-inspired garage doors and adaptable lighting conditions, enhancing the space’s dynamic and interactive experience. This integration of sustainability and design mirrors the pop-up’s themes of beauty in movement and transformation, creating a space where visitors can fully embrace their individuality.

This section highlights a range of work that reflects my passion for art, design, and hands-on craftsmanship. Painting has been a therapeutic outlet for me, with pieces created both in my free time and for environmental sustainability art contests, some of which have received awards.

As a student in the Interior Architecture program, I’ve explored digital design using parametric software like Rhino and VRAY, experimenting with materiality and form. Additionally, I collaborated with my group mates, Zachary Graham and Landon Hooker, to design and build a stool, combining digital modeling with woodworking techniques. This project gave me a deeper appreciation for precision and craftsmanship, showing how designs can evolve from the computer screen into functional, tangible objects.

SUBVERTED SUSPENSION [ZACHARY GRAHAM, NANCY YANG (ME), LANDON HOOKER] Our stool’s design harmonizes opposing forces—tension and compression—to Our stool’s design balances tension and compression for stability, inspired by the x-base leg structure. The rectilinear form shifts into a symmetrical composition, creating a dynamic visual of crossing legs from all angles. Made from walnut hardwood and high-tensile wires, it combines traditional craftsmanship with modern engineering, blending solid and void, function and form.
