Mission Statement NAMI NC provides mental health advocacy, education, support, and public awareness so that all individuals and families can build better lives.

About Us NAMI North Carolina is a grassroots non-profit 501(c)3 organization which was founded in 1984.

We serve the needs of those living with mental illness and their families in North Carolina by providing education, support, and referral services. We also provide advocacy at the individual, community, state, and federal levels to encourage policy changes and increase funding and services for those with the greatest need.

In FY 2022-2023, NAMI NC had members from 22 affiliate partners across the state. Our organization is a chartered state organization of the National Alliance of Mental Illness, one of the country’s largest and most trusted voices on mental illness advocacy.

Volunteer - Volunteers are at the heart of NAMI NC. They provide family and consumer peer education and support, advocate on our behalf, and represent NAMI at community events and professional conferences. 2022 - 2023 IMPACT REPORT Letter from President This past year has been a transitional period for NAMI NC. In order to keep up with our organization’s steady growth and increased demand for services, we were required to make significant structural, management, and staffing changes. We are especially excited to welcome Holly Provance Doggett, PhD, MS, who is joining NAMI NC as Executive Director. Holly has previously served as the Executive Director of NAMI Texas and as the Director of Patient Experience at Cedar Crest Hospital & Residential Treatment Center. Her experience in mental health advocacy and nonprofit management will ensure that we continue to fulfill our mission of improving the lives of those with mental illness and their families.

Above all else, NAMI NC serves its affiliates. Therefore, we spent much of the year focused on initiatives to improve services, opportunities, and support for those affiliates. We also made crucial moves to improve our internal operations, including transitioning to a more sophisticated financial system, and onboarding new staff with specialized skill sets to bolster operational efficiency. We reaffirmed our commitment to continuing our great programming throughout the state and invested in new technologies and opportunities for professional development for our staff.

Our events have also continued to grow this year, from our first inperson Annual Conference since the COVID-19 pandemic to one of our most successful NAMIWalks seasons ever, raising over $157,000.

In programming, communications, Helpline, and community inclusion, we have met or exceeded our goals for the year.

Despite the transitions in leadership and our efforts to shift towards more streamlined and sustainable operations, our mission remains the same - to give all North Carolinians the opportunity to live healthy and fulfilled lives. As these changes begin to benefit those we serve, we are confident that the future of NAMI NC is bright and that we are better positioned to accomplish that mission in a manner far greater than before.

2022 - 2023 IMPACT REPORT NAMI Family Support Group is a family member-led support group for family members, caregivers and loved ones of individuals living with mental illness.

• 22 groups held statewide • 15 new facilitators trained

NAMI Family-to-Family is an educational course for family members, caregivers and friends of individuals living with mental illness, and is designated as an evidence-based practice.

NAMI Peer-to-Peer is a peerled educational program for adults who wish to begin recovery. The course provides critical information and strategies related to living with mental illness.

2022 - 2023 IMPACT REPORT NAMI IN Our Own Voice is a presentation that unmasks mental illness using stories to illustrate the realities of staying in recovery.

This presentation can help change attitudes and stereotypes regarding mental illness.

NAMI Connection is a weekly recovery support group for people living with mental illness in which people learn from each others’ experiences, share coping strategies and offer each other encouragement and understanding.

NAMI Basics is an educational program for parents, caregivers and other family who provide care for youth (ages 22 and younger) who are experiencing mental health symptoms.

Helpline The NAMI North Carolina Helpline is dedicated to providing a single source for mental health information, warm support, and helpful resources. Our team continually vets and updates resources to reflect the best option for callers. The Helpline also refers callers to our support groups and educational classes held by local affiliates, and helps individuals navigate systems of care.

Total Helpline calls for 2022-2023 fiscal year:

NAMI on Campus NAMI on Campus clubs are student-run and led organizations that provide mental health support, education, and advocacy on campuses with the goal of improving the lives of students who are directly or indirectly affected by mental illness. In the wake of multiple traumatic events on North Carolina college campuses in the last couple of years, this beacon of mental health awareness and support has become even more crucial to the overall mission of NAMI North Carolina.

Currently, we have NAMI on Campus chapters at 10 colleges and universities, including: • Appalachian State University • Cape Fear Community College • Duke University • Fayetteville State University • Meredith College • NC State University • UNC Chapel Hill • UNC Wilmington • Wake Forest University • Winston-Salem State University

2022 - 2023 IMPACT REPORT Community Inclusion The goal of NAMI NC’s Community Inclusion program is to train and support individuals in the state who want to improve connections between those with mental illness and their communities. To that end, we administered over $31,300 in mini-grants to fund 8 traditional community inclusion projects. Over 500 people were served by these projects, which included creative classes on yoga, art and journaling; the establishment of a Community Care Clinic for social and resource connections; and presentations on erasing mental health stigma.

We also administered three Transitions to Community Living grants totaling $15,000. These projects are particularly to help those with serious mental illness acclimate to independent and community living. These projects included gardening classes and computer and job search training. Over 100 people were served in this year’s TCL projects.

Peer Leadership Council

The NAMI North Carolina Peer Leadership Council (PLC) seeks to propel people living with mental health conditions to reach their full potential and to unite the voice of North Carolina peers across cultural, ethnic, age, and economic boundaries. The PLC works to advance the activities and involvement of the peer membership of NAMI at the local, state, and national levels by actively participating in advocacy issues and program development.

This year the newly elected PLC Board issued scholarships for peers to attend the national NAMICon in Minneapolis, and coordinated community outreach events highlighting NAMI’s peer support services.

Thursdays with NAMI FY 2023 represented the last year of the Thursdays with NAMI webinar series, which began in 2020 as a way to build conversations and community around mental health topics during the COVID-19 pandemic. The program provided a weekly space to gain inspiration from hearing others’ stories and allowed peers to learn the language of recovery.

This past fiscal year, 41 Thursdays with NAMI sessions were attended by over 640 people and covered a wide range of topics such as crisis intervention efforts, substance abuse recovery, exploring effective coping strategies, and so much more. The series received rave reviews across our state for the feeling of connection it gave, while providing sources of information and hope.

Awareness Campaigns One of NAMI North Carolina’s main priorities is to increase public awareness around mental health and related topics. To that end, we focus on several national awareness months every year in our communications and outreach endeavors. This year we achieved this goal through several new initiatives meant to draw attention to the mental health needs of diverse communities.

We featured information on Suicide Prevention and Mental Illness Awareness Week at our Annual Conference. We also featured a memorial fountain for those who lost their lives to suicide.

For African American History Month, we featured profiles of local Black mental healthcare providers and advocates on our social media pages.

We interviewed and published a blog by a TBI survivor during Brain Injury Awareness Month.

For Autism Acceptance Month and LGBTQ Pride Month, we published features in Tuesday Newsday and ran weekly social media campaigns.

For Minority Mental Health month, we hosted a webinar on cultural competency featuring a diverse panel of experts from different cultural backgrounds.

2022 - 2023 IMPACT REPORT Annual Conference Our 2022 Annual Conference was held at the McKimmon Center at NC State University in Raleigh on October 4, 2022.

Nearly 150 people joined us on getting #BackToTheBasics of educating, empowering, and encouraging members of our communities that are affected by mental illness. As this was our first in-person conference since the COVID-19 pandemic, we were eager to get back to the networking, inspiration, and collaboration that makes this conference so rewarding every year.

Our keynote speaker was Charles Clark, a motivational speaker and author. He has pivoted from becoming one of the fastest men in the world to building an international speaking business. Charles spoke on the topic “Adversity Makes You Stronger.” Conference attendees chose from a variety of sessions on topics such as HIPAA privacy, wellness and resiliency, suicide prevention, crisis intervention, peer support, and DEI initiatives.

Affiliate Leader Conference On September 17, 2022, NAMI North Carolina affiliate leaders and members gathered from across the state for a virtual meeting where they were able to learn from and network with one another. Representatives from affiliates shared their success stories in the areas of wellness recovery, program development, and advocacy. The group was trained in NAMI 720, Ending the Silence, and using the new website format.

Leaders also learned about Crisis Intervention Teams (CIT) and heard about SWOT analyses and succession planning from Professor Randall Bergman of LenoirRhyne University. Throughout the conference, affiliates recognized each other’s hard work and dedication to NAMI and its mission, and celebrated each other’s successes.

Our 2023 NAMIWalks season was held at Perimeter Park in Morrisville on May 20, 2023. Over 900 people and 130 Walk Teams joined us for an incredible event including food, music, a kid’s activity area, puppy petting, and more! Together, with family, friends, and our furry companions, we stomped out stigma, raised awareness and funds, and celebrated recovery. Huge thanks to everyone who sponsored, volunteered, donated, and participated in this year’s event!

2022 - 2023 IMPACT REPORT Advocacy

A primary goal of the advocacy efforts of NAMI NC is to provide persons living with mental illness, their families, peers and advocates with the information they need to become effective advocates for better mental health services and public policies. In order to do that, we held a two-session training on advocacy before our annual Advocacy Day event on March 9, 2023. Our training, which included North Carolina legislators, taught participants strategies and techniques for meeting with legislators to share their stories. On Advocacy Day itself, for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, NAMI NC staff, volunteers, and supporters went to the NC General Assembly on Jones Street to meet face-to-face with lawmakers to share stories of mental health adversity, recovery, triumph, and all points in between.

We continue to prioritize advocating for better access to mental healthcare and more public awareness as we strive to reach our overall goal of better mental health for all North Carolinians.

DEI One of NAMI North Carolina’s primary goals for the past year has been to invest in initiatives for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). To that end, we conducted 7 DEI trainings throughout the state, many of them associated with local affiliates. These trainings were designed to encourage organizations to consider building their own DEI initiatives, and were attended by a total of 271 participants.

We also hosted a Juneteenth celebration at Anderson Point Park on June 16, 2023 to celebrate diversity and explore Black mental health in detail. Speakers included Sage Chioma, MPH; Consuela Chapman, MSW, LCSW; Sherry Burden, Nina Leger, and Royce Allegretto. Attendees enjoyed dynamic speakers, great food, and integrative activities. We also gave awards to NAMI Durham and Fayetteville State University’s NAMI on Campus for their work supporting the mental health of Black people in their communities.
