WELCOME!

Welcome to NAMB National 2023! We are excited to have you join us and share in the celebration of NAMB’s 50th Anniversary!

Since 1973, NAMB has been the voice of the mortgage industry and has worked tirelessly to serve through advocacy, education, networking & more. Thousands of individuals have played a part in NAMB’s success over the years through leadership, committee & membership, and all of us have contributed to where we are today as an organization.

I am excited to o cially become President on October 1. It is even more special being from Florida, the birthplace of the organization. In the years leading up to NAMB’s founding, members of the then Florida Association of Mortgage Brokers contributed a portion of each members’ dues to help form a national association that would help advocate for the industry in Washington DC.

In addition, I am proud to be the fifth woman to become President of NAMB. I would like to thank Diane Warfield Kelly, Patricia K. McGill, Janice M. Hix and, most recently, Linda McCoy who paved the way for me to become a female leader in the association. I would like to especially recognize Linda McCoy, who served as President from 2021-2022, as she transitions from a leadership role. Her dedication to NAMB is unparalleled. NAMB couldn’t ask for a better cheerleader, supporter & advocate. She has served on NAMB’s Board of Directors for over 10 years, founded NAMB’s women’s mentoring group Inspire, and has firmly cemented her place in NAMB history.

I would also like to thank Lisa O’Connor, Chair of the Conference Committee, and all of the members who have worked tirelessly this year to make the event amazing for all of you in attendance. This is Lisa’s third year as Chair and there is no volunteer who works harder to make our events a success. While you are here, please make sure to attend our informative speaking sessions, sold-out trade show, fun-filled parties & in-depth educational classes. Plus, don’t forget to stay connected through our mobile app.

So, “Let’s Go for the Gold” & celebrate NAMB’s 50th Anniversary as we set the gold standard for professionalism, ethical behavior & business standards in the mortgage industry now & beyond.

A YEAR AS NAMB PRESIDENT

Serving as NAMB president the past year has been an experience di cult to describe in a few words or without leaving something out. Perhaps the best way to describe the experience is to say I have served as President of my Church Usher Ministry, my beloved fraternity Omega Psi Phi, my Community HOA, local & state mortgage associations & commanded two U.S. Air Force operational squadrons.

In each experience, there were challenges to overcome, tough decisions to make, failures to learn from, victories to celebrate, relationships built, things left undone & sometimes asking, “Why did we do that?” Each experience is one I treasure. I continued to learn about myself as an individual & adjusted my leadership style accordingly. My belief that there are more people willing to support you than not was further enhanced.

As NAMB President, I was fortunate to be part of a great team of “doers,” more specifically, the 2022-2023 NAMB Board of Directors. Each member is a resolute mortgage professional with a sincere desire to serve their profession. Allow me to share a few of NAMB’s meaningful accomplishments this year.

After an extremely successful national convention in October 2022, we enthusiastically planned our annual new year event, FOCUS, NAMB’s Marketing, Sales & Tech Conference. In March 2023, led by Industry Partners Committee chair & Past President Kimber White, NAMB held its first Industry Partners Retreat in five years in Louisville, Ky.,bringing NAMB leadership together with its most committed partners to discuss mortgage industry & legislative concerns.

Under Kimber’s leadership NAMB traveled to Anchorage, Houston, St. Louis & New Orleans with longtime Industry Partner Freddie Mac for the NAMB Road Show lunch & learn. .

In April 2023, led by NAMB VP & Government A airs chair Jim Nabors, we headed to DC for the annual Legislative Conference. Our amazing line up of speakers inclued FHFA Director Sandra Thompson, Assistant Secretary Julia Gordon of the U.S. Department of Housing & Development, and from the House Committee on Financial Services, Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) & Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY). The highlight of the conference was the introduction of Trigger Leads Bill - H.R. 2656, introduced by Congressman Torres, with whom NAMB’s lobbyist, the Williams Group, worked closely.

Also this year, Education Committee chair Linda McCoy oversaw the creation of NAMB’s FHA & Reverse mortgage certification courses, continuing to set the bar for professionalism & education for the mortgage industry. NAMB reasserted its Continuing Education programs in an uncertain market while other providers left the industry.

Under the leadership of chair Rocke Andrews, the Finance Committee continuously improved NAMB’s financial processes, monitoring critical NAMB investment assets and ensuring NAMB’s operational & emergency accounts were well managed.

During the year, I made several di cult decisions regarding interviews with the guidance of NAMB’s PR expert Josh Steinfeld. Thanks to Josh for his expertise, patience & professionalism. I must also mention & thank David Shirk, Esq., NAMB’s legal advisor. David’s counseling & inestimable insight coupled with his unparalleled knowledge of the mortgage industry proved invaluable to me throughout the year.

With a limited sta , NAMB was able to provide outstanding service to our members. This was made possible because of the strong relationships which are fostered between the NAMB leadership, the BODs, committees & NAMB’s exceptional sta : Brandie Starks, Director of Operations & Jilly MacDowell, Director of Marketing.

NAMB has a unique approach to how its leadership must function to be e ective & maintain long term sustainability. As unique as NAMB’s approach to leadership may be, it has survived the test of time. NAMB celebrated its 50th anniversary on August 23, 2023. Very few organizations have achieved this milestone.

I was fortunate to have President-Elect Valerie Saunders supporting me. She possesses a thorough understanding of how NAMB operates, having experience in every aspect of NAMB’s operations. Her knowledge touched each sta member, board member, committee chair, advisor & Industry Partner. Valerie’s willingness to give of herself and her resources to NAMB is incomparable.

In conclusion, I find myself feeling exactly as I described. I was blessed with the luxury of having Past Presidents serve as Committee Chairs, a knowledgeable President-Elect, a dedicated BOD, a superb sta , professional & selfless advisors, and engaged Industry Partners.

A special thanks to Past Presidents & friends Linda McCoy, Kimber White, Rocke Andrews, Jim Nabors, Rick Bettencourt & Harry Dinham for always being present. It was indeed an honor & privilege to serve the NAMB membership as NAMB President 2022-2023.
