The Thoughts of Chairman Geoff (Hon. Sec. deputising this time)

Hello All, I am again standing in for our leader while he concentrates on important things like getting fit to join us again as soon as he can. In the meantime Geoff continues to mend despite the reluctance of the NHS to pin his damaged clavicle like they originally said was necessary. He’s even gone and bought another bike to replace his Pan. I’ll let him tell you all about it when we next see him. He’s able to drive now at least so we can expect him to come and see us off at least. Since Christmas we have had little opportunity to safely attend our regular Sunday rideouts due to the adverse weather conditions. Remember too that the drive in to our HQ at the Obelisk can be treacherous even though the surrounding streets may be gritted. Isn’t it amazing that we can have unseasonably mild weather mid-week and then a sudden plunge into the cold, white stuff on a weekend to frustrate our plans!? Last Sunday (1st February) was quite typical, although on the actual morning it turned out to be a bit better than expected. Two hardy souls did not see the group email cancelling the meet and turned up anyway! This time of year, we do need to be aware of potentially adverse forecasts and be prepared to cancel at short notice. In such circumstances we do try to update the website and connected social media sites so members do not take unnecessary risks to attend. So check first if it looks dodgy. Some of our members travel from quite a distance away and the last thing we want is to get them stranded miles from home (or worse) because it might be quite safe to ride from where they live. Enough said; Spring is round the corner and we can soon expect to be able to get on with our hobby without adverse weather to contend with. Ride safe. Regards,

Dave H

Our website- www.nammc.org.uk with link to Members’ Forum and IAM. Find out what’s going on— updated regularly, so get in the habit of looking, you won’t know what’s happening if you don’t. From the website you can also access the NAM Forum. If you are an existing member and still require login access you’ll need to contact our Forum Administrator whose details are on the last page. New members will be contacted upon joining. These days we can contact just about all of our members by email. Regular communication by this method is quick, cheap and effective. The cost saved can be better applied for our members’ benefit. You should be getting regular groupmailings from me? If you aren’t, then the email address you gave me doesn’t work or you’ve opted out! My thanks too to all who contribute items for publication; keep them coming: let me know what you’d like to see—or not.

NAM’s BIKE PANNIER SALE

(it’s like a Car Boot Sale only smaller)

Nothing on offer this month except an item or two of a humorous nature, some of it contributed by our members, so I’m not entirely to blame!

Got som e looking fo thing to sell? r someth in know of a good s g, or e provided rvice by a 3rd p arty Then sha re it here ? .

Enjoy it while you can…...A group of bikers, all aged 40, discussed where they should meet for lunch on the 1st Sunday in the month. (Sounds familiar?) Finally it was agreed they would meet at Weatherspoon’s in Melton Mowbray because the waitresses had very nice breasts and wore micro-mini-skirts.... Ten years later, at age 50, the friends once again discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at Weatherspoon’s in Melton because the food and service was good and the beer selection excellent. Ten years later, at age 60, the friends again discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at Weatherspoon’s in Melton because there was plenty of parking, they could dine in peace and quiet, and it was good value for money. Ten years later, at age 70, the friends discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at Weatherspoon’s in Melton because the restaurant had wheelchair access and had a toilet for the disabled. Ten years later, at age 80, the friends discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at Weatherspoon’s in Melton because they had never been there before.

Advanced Motorcycle Test Passes Guys & Gals, the easiest way we will get to know if you’ve passed is if you tell us!

(No new passes to report this time but we have recruited 2 new Associate members Simon Castle & Miles Odell during January) Recent Passes:

(Oct) Kevin Sellman (Nov) Steve Bartley, Mandy Dennis (Dec) Jack Marr (On becoming a fully qualified member NAM lapel badges are presented at the first opportunity—usually on a Sunday morning)

Congratulations to all

Mid-Week Observes For those members who have difficulty attending regularly on Sundays there are a number of Observers who are available to conduct these during the week, by appointment, to suit work schedules etc. The Secretary can arrange these if required. Normally, this would be in daylight hours, Monday to Saturday - allow for 2/3 hours duration.

Observers please note any such appointments must be advised to the Group Secretary or our Associates’ Sec. BEFORE the ride. This is to ensure that both parties are protected by IAM Group insurance which otherwise is only automatically in force on official published ride-outs. So let me know if you make any direct arrangements to observe.

Please also note that on reaching the required Test standard, in your Observer’s opinion, a mock test with a ‘Senior’ prior to applying for a Test date with IAM is advisable. This is to confirm the necessary standard has been reached and to avoid the expense of a re-test if there is any doubt remaining. This might have to be on a Sunday. Group Sec

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE MOTORCYCLE SURVEY Phil Hurd, a member of NAM and formerly the Chair of The Northamptonshire Motorcycle Task Force, has sent this to me and requesting that it is forwarded to our members so they can participate in the survey. This survey is for bikers and non-bikers alike and will hopefully help shape motorcycle policy in the County, therefore it is important that we all take the opportunity to have our say. The fact that we are all involved with advanced riding should make our views have some impact. This survey also allows you to have your say on what improvements could be made to make motorcycling safer and therefore more appealing to a wider road-using public. I have just completed the survey and, regrettably, could not say anything to particularly commend the present state of our roads and their planning. However, I could, and did, have my say on where I thought improvements could be made from a biker’s perspective as well as generally. I had to mention the deplorable state of our roads, potholed & patched with dirty , often obscured road signs. Blocked drains, and other such menaces to safe riding, are also a big issue whenever it rains. I agree with Phil, when he says “Pass it on to as many non-bikers as we can” We are all road users and there are many situations, such as roundabouts and junctions, where a more open aspect for approaching traffic would aid better planning for safer entrance & exits for all users. IPSGA - and all that we preach to plan our safe progress! Here’s the link—do have a look and give your opinion. http://www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/en/news/Newsreleases/Pages/County-motorcycle-survey-could-helpshape-transport-policy.aspx

Groups message 19 January 2015 IAM appoints new Chief Executive Sarah Sillars to champion driver and rider skills The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has appointed Mrs Sarah Sillars OBE, as its new Chief Executive Officer as of 5 February. Sarah comes from Semta, the former sector skills council for engineering and advanced manufacturing, where she has overseen its commercialisation. Sarah’s said to groups: “I am very proud to be appointed your CEO. I know that you, as representatives of our network of groups around the UK, are our front line. You are dedicated to promoting the IAM because you are committed to what you do and have a passion for improving driver and rider skills”. “As I get established at the IAM I will be travelling around the UK and aim to meet as many of you as possible. I will want to hear all your views, unfiltered and directly. I am as passionate as you are to create a better IAM for the future and wish to hold the values, but change the gear”. She continued: “My intention is to ensure that we consolidate our experience and expertise, and then change up a gear – to further build on the excellent and vital research, training and lobbying activities that we carry out. We will change opinions, driving habits and legislation.” IAM Chairman Alistair Cheyne OBE said: “Sarah is the perfect person to drive the IAM into a new era. She has the skills, background and experience to help the IAM achieve its goal of becoming the best provider of post licence driver and rider training in the UK. “The challenge ahead is a large one, but I know you will give Sarah your support and backing as we grow the IAM by appealing to more of the UK’s drivers and riders.” Alistair paid tribute to Nick Stonard, who has held the position of Acting Chief Executive since last September. Alistair said: “Nick has done a superb job holding the fort while we looked for a permanent leader. He has maintained the high quality of work produced by the IAM, and is able to pass the reins of a healthy and thriving organisation onto Sarah.” Sarah has a long and illustrious career within the automotive sector, having been CEO and Executive Chair of the Institute of the Motoring Industry (IMI). They made her an Honorary Fellow and Vice President on her departure in 2012. Awarded Industry Personality of the Year 2004 and Outstanding Achievement Award 2006 by automotive magazines AM and Motor Trader respectively, Sarah was listed in the UK motor industry’s most influential top ten. In September 2008 Sarah was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award by Bodyshop Magazine in recognition of IMI’s work with ATA in the body repair sector. She was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in June 2008 for services to skills training and the retail motor industry. Sarah has more than 25 years of experience within the motor and retail industries, having begun her career with Marks & Spencer, managing stores in England and Wales and later as Operations Director at automotive management consultancy Anne Gray Associates. Enough serious, now for some humour2. The lie detector robot. A father buys a lie detector robot that slaps people when they lie. He decides to test it out at dinner one night. The father asks his son what he did that afternoon. The son says, "I did some schoolwork." The robot slaps the son. The son says, "Ok, Ok. I was at a friend's house watching movies." Dad asks, "What movie did you watch?" Son says, "Toy Story." The robot slaps the son. Son says, "Ok, Ok, we were watching porn." Dad says, "What? At your age I didn't even know what porn was." The robot slaps the father. Mum laughs and says, "Well, he certainly is your son." The robot slaps the mother. Robot for sale on e-bay. **************************************************************** Politics? Recently, while I was working in the flower beds in my front garden, my neighbours stopped to chat as they returned home from walking their dog. During our friendly conversation I asked their little girl what she wanted to be when she grew up. She said she wanted to be Prime Minister someday. Both of her parents, Labour Party members, were standing there, so I asked her, "If you were Prime Minister what would be the first thing you would do?" She replied... "I'd give food and houses to all the homeless people." Her parents beamed with pride! "Wow.....what a worthy goal!" I said. "But you don't have to wait until you're Prime Minister to do that!" I told her. "What do you mean?" she asked. So I told her, "You can come over to my house and mow the lawn, pull out the weeds, and trim my hedge, and I'll pay you £50. Then you can go over to the shop, where the homeless chap hangs out, and you can give him the £50 to use toward food and a new house." She thought that over for a few seconds, then she looked me straight in the eye and asked, "Why doesn't the homeless man come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the £50?" I said, "Welcome to the Conservative Party." Her parents aren't speaking to me anymore. ***************************************************************** Do you have a goldfish? Two Aussie builders (Patrick and Eric) are seated either side of a table in a rough pub when a well-dressed man enters, orders a beer and sits on a stool at the bar. The two builders start to speculate about the occupation of the ‘suit’. Pat: - I reckon he's an accountant. Eric: - No way - I bet he's a stockbroker.. Pat: - He ain't no stockbroker! A stockbroker wouldn't come in here! The argument repeats itself for some time until the volume of beer gets the better of Pat and he makes for the toilet. On entering the toilet he sees that the suit is standing at a urinal. Curiosity and the several beers get the better of the builder. Pat: - 'Scuse me.. No offence meant, but me and me mate were wondering what you do for a living? Suit: - No offence taken! I'm a Logical Scientist by profession. Pat: - Oh! What's that then? Suit: - I'll try to explain by example... Do you have a goldfish at home? Pat: - Err... Mmm . Well yeah, I do as it happens! Suit: - Well, it's logical to follow that you keep it in a bowl or in a pond. Which is it? Pat: - It's in a pond! Suit: - Well then it's reasonable to suppose that you have a large garden? Pat - As it happens, yes I have got a big garden! Suit: - Well then it's logical to assume that in this town if you have a large garden then you have a large house? Pat: - As it happens I've got a five-bedroom house...built it myself! Suit: - Well given that you've built a five-bedroom house it is logical to assume that you haven't built it just for yourself and that you are quite probably married? Pat: - Yes I am married, I live with my wife and five children Suit: - Well then it is logical to assume that you are sexually active with your wife on a regular basis? Pat:- Yep! Five or six nights a week! Suit: - Well then it is logical to suggest that you do not masturbate very often? Pat: - Me? Never. Suit: - Well there you are! That's logical science at work. Pat: - How's that then? Suit: - Well from finding out that you had a goldfish, I've told you about your sex life! Pat: - I see! That's pretty impressive...thanks mate! Both leave the toilet and Pat returns to his mate. Eric: - I see the suit was in there. Did you ask him what he does? Pat - Yep! He's a logical scientist! Eric: - What's that then? Pat: - I'll try and explain. Do you have a goldfish? Eric: - Nope. Pat: - Well then, you're a w*nker. 10

11 Be prepared for the ‘what ifs’2.. I was a very happy man. My wonderful girlfriend and I had been dating for over a year. So we decided to get married. There was only one little thing bothering me.. It was her beautiful younger sister, Sofia. My prospective sister-in-law was twenty-two, wore very tight miniskirts and generally was bra-less. She would regularly bend down when she was near me. I always got more than a nice view. It had to be deliberate, she never did it around anyone else.

One day, she called me and asked me to come over. "To check my sister's wedding invitations" she said. She was alone when I arrived. She whispered to me that she had feelings and desires for me. She couldn't overcome them anymore. She told me that she wanted me just once before I got married. She said "Before you commit your life to my sister". Well, I was in total shock and I couldn't say a word. She said, "I'm going upstairs to my bedroom. If you want one last wild fling, just come up and have me".

I was stunned and frozen in shock as I watched her go up the stairs. I stood there for a moment....then turned and made a bee-line straight to the front door. I opened the door and headed straight towards my car. Lo' and behold, my entire future family was standing outside, all clapping! With tears in his eyes, my father-in-law hugged me. He said, "Sergio, we are very happy that you have passed our little test. We couldn't ask for a better man for our daughter. Welcome to the family my son.." And the moral of this story is: Always keep your condoms in your car

I’ll bet he was once a Boy Scout?

Such is life2... Brains of older people are slow because they know so much. People do not decline mentally with age, it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more information in their brains, scientists believe. Much like a computer struggles as the hard drive gets full, so, too, do humans take longer to access information when their brains are full. Researchers say this slowing down process is not the same as cognitive decline. The human brain works slower in old age, said Dr. Michael Ramscar, but only because we have stored more information over time The brains of older people do not get weak. On the contrary, they simply know more. Also, older people often go to another room to get something and when they get there, they stand there wondering what they came for. It is NOT a memory problem, it is nature's way of making older people do more exercise.

SO THERE!! I have more friends I should send this to, but right now I can't remember their names... So, please forward this to your friends; they may be my friends, too.

Bike4Life is staged to mark the start of motorcycle season, and consists of a 23 mile ride out from Meole Brace in Shrewsbury to RAF Museum Cosford near Wolverhampton - where the festival is based. The lively event features arena displays, stalls and exhibitions, biker tutorials and live music supported by Planet Rock Radio.
