Gisele Bündchen The most acclaimed Brazilian beauty, Gisele Bündchen, is responsible for having marked ‘the return of the sexy model’ as Vogue stated in 1999. Named ‘The Most Beautiful Girl in the World’ by Rolling Stone magazine and reportedly the highest-paid model of all times, Gisele embodies exotic beauty with killer brains. Her natural charisma landed her on more than 500 magazine covers and in ad campaigns for over 20 international brands. In 2001 she launched her sandal line Ipanema which is still going strong. She also has a lingerie line, accessory collections and an eco-friendly cosmetic company called ‘Sejaa Pure Skincare’. Just 33 years old, this working mom of two has an estimated fortune of $150m. And counting…

Heidi Klum

The first German model to appear in a Victoria’s Secret show, on hundreds of magazine covers and twice on the cover of Sports Illustrated, Heidi got into business after ‘retiring’ from modelling. She is the host and executive producer of the successful show ‘Project Runway’, a judge in the eight season of ‘America’s Got Talent’ and the host of ‘Germany’s Next Top Model’. The blonde beauty designed a sandal line for Birkenstock, two maternity wear lines, Loved and Lavish, a jewelry line with Mouawad, an anti-aging skin care line called ‘In an Instant’ and already worked four times with Jordache Jeans, being also the brand’s spokesmodel. The busy bombshell is said to have earned well over $100 million and she still has much to say in the business.

At the age of 40, the former German supermodel and mother of four, Heidi, boasts a business career (besides amazing mile-long legs and an incredible figure) that many women envy.

Cindy Crawford Once famous for her sexy mole, 47 year-old Cindy Crawford went from supermodel to super-businesswoman and is now famous for her brilliant money-making career. She was smart enough to launch it thanks to her global fame, which resulted in a trusted and respected multi-million dollar brand. Besides her long-term contracts with giants like Pepsi, Revlon and Omega, Crawford also ‘flirted’ with television, hosting for six years the MTV show ‘House of Style’ and created very successful workout videos and a make-up book. She teamed with the company of cosmetic surgeon Dr. Sebagh and launched ‘Meaningful Beauty’, a skin care line which became one of the company’s best-sellers. Inspired by her own home, she started a furniture line where she used the knowledge acquired during her fashion years. The ‘Cindy Crawford Home Collection’ is said to gross over $250m annually in retail sales selling furniture, rugs and home accessories.

Tyra Banks

Tyra is presently focused on her production company, Bankable Productions. Her role model is Oprah Winfrey and her net worth is currently estimated at $90 million. Not bad…

6

Photo: Stafford /

She is also an actress, a writer, a producer and a TV personality, being one of the world’s most influential women. She is the executive producer, judge and host of the successful reality show ‘America’s Next Model’, already in its 20th season , she had her own talk-show ‘The Tyra Banks Show’ and was a co-producer of the ‘True Beauty’ show.

She was the first African-American woman to appear on the coveted covers of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and Victoria’s Secret catalogue. She modelled for the most influential names in fashion and she graced the covers of the most important fashion magazines. But for Tyra Banks, 39, this was not enough.

Elle Macpherson With an amazing body and a beautiful head for figures, Australian Elle Macpherson, 49, nicknamed ‘the Body’ during her modelling years, is another successful example of model turned entrepreneur. In 1994 she left her agency, Ford Models, and formed her own company, Elle Macpherson Inc., which was her base for all the endeavours that followed. She produced workout videos, her own calendars, and in 1990 she launched her own lingerie brand – Elle Macpherson Intimates- which became the best-selling lingerie brand in the U.K. and Australia, bringing her an estimated $15 million a year. The determined mother of two also launched her own skin care line ‘Elle Macpherson – The Body’ and was a Revlon global ambassador for three years. Since 2010 she has been the host of reality show ‘Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model’, created by another former model, Tyra Banks.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Elle Macpherson, watch out! Victoria’s Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley seems to have scored many points during her first year in the lingerie business. At just 26, with an angelic face and a beautiful body, British Rosie teamed one year ago with UK high street giant Marks & Spencer for a lingerie line called ‘Rosie for Autograph’. The result was quite mind-blowing, as the collection became the fastest selling underwear range in the store’s history. Let’s see if the beautiful young Brit will follow in the steps of her senior fellow models and become an equally successful entrepreneur. We’ll be watching her… It might seem easy to switch from glamour cover girl to successful corporate player, but it really isn’t. These beautiful women demonstrated that besides killer looks they had a huge determination to create profitable businesses. And their beauty surely made the whole package look more appealing. Kathy Ireland Once a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model (she graced 13 consecutive issues, including 3 memorable covers), Californian Kathy Ireland, 50, has made it big in the business world. Actually bigger than any other model, or Martha Stewart herself! Her company, Kathy Ireland Worldwide, sells up to $2 billion annually at retail and is constantly expanding. It all started in 1993 with a sock collection sold at Kmart. Kathy did not just want to model, but create it herself, putting her name on it. She considered that if she was successful in selling socks, she could sell anything. And indeed she could. From furniture to jewelry, from bridal gowns to sportswear, workout videos and swimsuits, Kathy has become ‘the queen’ of home goods and apparel for Middle America’s moms. Greatly influenced by her late friend, Liz Taylor, and by Warren Buffet, Ireland is a multi-talented, gorgeous looking lady that many women look up to.

Iman

The Somali beauty launched ‘Iman Cosmetics’ in 1994, making a revolutionary move in the field of ethnic cosmetics. Iman, mother of two and wife of singer David Bowie, has proved to be equally beautiful and business savvy building a global cosmetic empire worth over $25 million, creating ‘Global Chic’, the successful fashion and jewelry line for the Home Shopping Network, and an additional line of home décor. She also hosted the Canadian edition of ‘Project Runway’ and season 2 of the US reality television series ‘The Fashion Show’.

The elegant former model, 58, is today one of the most successful women entrepreneurs in the cosmetic world. Her name, which means ‘faith’ in Arabic, was like a premonition that she would change the perception on how good different skin tones could look with the right makeup.

E

ven though we don’t really want to admit it, labor day has past and it has brought all the and the cooler weather is around the corner. In short: fall is here! Let’s say it, summer is probably one of the favorite seasons of every true fashionista, as it gives a lot of freedom in dressing up given that one does not really need to take into account the cold-weather factor, so we are sure that all of you are already panicking and getting depressed about the idea of having to start to bring out all your winter clothes. Do not despair, there is a solution for everything! You might not know it but you don’t need to immediately toss into the back of your closet all your cute summer dresses as you feel the first goose-bumps on your arms, but there are some well-guarded fashion tricks on how to use your summer items as long as you can, also well into fall. Here are all the secrets revealed…

10

Don’t through away your beach bag We are sure all of you have already hidden somewhere your beach bag as soon as you got out of the plane after a holiday at the seaside. Well, now go to that secret place and bring it out again, as your neutral-tone straw bag will become your carry-all for your fall days. Many of the biggest celebs have tried out this trend and continued carrying around their beach bag also when they were wearing a warm coat, so why shouldn’t you?

Black tights will be your best friends We present you your new BFF for this fall: black tights. They could be real life-savers when it comes to transitioning all your summer clothes into the cooler season. They are perfect to wear under your summer dresses, shorts and skirts, preventing you to freeze to death every time you set foot outside the door. They could either be plain black or with some nice embroidery and decorations to add an element of interest to your look. Choose them in the right number of deniers according to how cold it gets in your area and remember: the higher the deniers, the warmer they will be.

Use a scarf A scarf is another must-have for this period as it can update any between-season outfit in a really stylish way. Opt for a scarf that is both long and large and that, in case of real cold, you can also use as a shawl. All the celebrities have understood it that a scarf is the

best extra layer you can have on top of an outfit, especially paired with short-sleeve or sleeveless tops and a pair of jeans. A really casual look but also very effective, perfect for these first days of fall.

Mix up the colors So, it is already a big enough shock to see summer quickly slipping away and we don’t really want to increase this by switching immediately from a super colorful look to one all made of black and grey hues. What you really want is to slowly ease into the darker tones of winter by mixing up your beloved bright summer colors and prints with the warmer fall ones. So, don’t give up on your neon skirt or colorful top, but wear it together with something orange, mustard yellow, red or brown, which are the elite colors for fall.

11

Layers, layers, layers These days are a bit tricky, as they can get warm and cold in a matter of minutes and you never really know how to dress to be prepared for both case scenarios. The best solution is to dress in layers, so you are going to be light enough if the last rays of sun are still there and warm enough if the chilly air decides to come instead. The biggest problem with layers is that many women just pile up the clothes ending up looking really blocky and large, but the secret of layering is actually to still manage to show off your feminine figure underneath it. The way to do this is either to leave a part of the body exposed, such as the legs or the arms, or to belt everything at the waist.

You will need a sweater We know this headline sounds a bit imperative, but it is for your own fashion sake. A sweater is a no-brainer when it comes to taking a summer outfit into fall, as it will give you that layer of style and warmth that is unachievable with any other item. You can either wear it tucked into a high waist skirt or as a cardigan to wear over your summer tops and dresses. The result is guaranteed to be très chic!

Keep your summer dresses

12

together with a black blazer and a pair of tights. On the other hand, your maxi dress is the perfect evening gown for the fall! You can wear it with a trench coat on top, a pair of killer shoes, a clutch bag and some precious jewelry for a really glamorous look, perfect for your elegant soirĂŠes. If it is a casual maxi dress though, you can still wear it during the day with a pair of ankle boots and a cardigan sweater or a blazer on top.

Add a pair of boots

You might think that your sundress and maxi dress have seen their end of the line, but the good news is that you can still use them even if you are not at the seaside anymore!

Boots and ankle booties have always been seen as very sexy on a woman. Wear a pair of boots, better if they are studded like fashion wants them this year, together with your favorite skirt and a lace top or a sweater for a great contrast between aggressiveness and femininity. Just by adding these shoes

Your favorite sundress could become a great dress to wear at the office if worn

you will have updated a great look with style and have your perfect fall outfit ready for use!

ospitality aficionados John Terzian, Brian Toll, and Markus Molinari of The h.wood.group are thrilled to announce their newest venture, Hooray Henry’s. A playful concept inspired by the quirky yet sophisticated young British gentleman, known as a “Hooray Henry”, the space will be reminiscent of dashing old London style with striking vertical and horizontal lines, brass accents, smoky mirrors, and splashes of color and charm. John Terzian says Henry’s is “intended to evoke the elegance and class of old London hotels and apartment buildings, mixed with the playful British flare.” Markus Molinari adds, “We have a great group of British friends, we really wanted a place for them to hang out.” As the newest addition to the h.wood roster (which boasts Hollywood hotspot Bootsy Bellows and Santa Monica favorite SHOREbar), Hooray Henry’s promises to have a unique and jaunty flair you’ll find nowhere else. Designed and fleshed out by John Sofio of BUILT (designs include Pink Taco and

14

the AIA/LA-award-winning SHOREbar). Sofio explains, “The detailing of the booths are inspired by the Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. The “English-Mod” rosewood wall speaks to a time of cool style, while the deep blue automotive paint used on the highly detailed wall and ceiling panels employs a vintage Jaguar car’s palate”. Hooray Henry’s design includes brass detailing, custom equestrian lamps, and tartan carpeting finish off the manor in a stylized British-chic décor without relying on common English pub design, vintage English trophies culled from a British cyclist’s lifetime of collecting. Above the bar a large custom caricature painting that depicts friends of the club frolicking in an English countryside estate and a 3-D projection wall above the DJ booth. In the brand new upstairs there will be an intimate room for friends and family that will feel much like a London hotel suite. Hooray Henry’s 8713 Beverly Boulevard, L.A, CA 90048 www.thehwood.com

INTERVIEW

JOHN TERZIAN

How did you get your start in this business? I started an events/promotion company in my freshman year at USC and it grew pretty big. Everything i do today stems from what I learned creating that business. What is the vibe of your locations and what makes them different? The only vibe that runs throughout all of my places is warmth. They all are inviting and have personal touches which makes people want to stay and come back frequently. Aside from that, each venue has a distinct and unique concept and decor and I do that on purpose. What is the secret to open successful places in LA? Just never stop. Never stop learning about new things, meeting new people and trying new concepts.

15

Tell us about the Shore Bar? SHOREbar started out as a passion project for me. I grew up in west los angeles and all of my close friends and family live in the area. So when the opportunity came for me to take over a dive bar and create a whole new concept I jumped at it. The first thing that was most important was the people behind the place financially are two guys (mark verge and kevin miller) who i admire and respect business wise (they own the company westsiderentals.com as well as numerous other businesses). I then created a concept that was supposed to be like a martha’s vineyard type of beach house and the key separating factor was that it would have a members only room that would would be like a country club for locals. Tell us about the concept for the Bootsy Bellows? The Bootsy Bellows concept came about from david arquette and me. Prior to coming up with the name etc. I met with my friend David Arquette about creating a new concept that L.A. had never seen. The purpose was to provide tons of entertainment going at all times in addition to being a nightclub. David had a passion for marionnettes and is also one of the best entertainers/ showmen I have ever seen. In addition to all of that he shares the same love of hospitality and people as I do so we created a concept that became Bootsy Bellows. The overall theme was to be our version of the Rat Pack. David is at Bootsys every night either performing himself with puppets or overseeing the puppeteers as well as greeting all of the tables and customers.

16

to create a version of an old London flat with a club flare to it; hence, hooray henry’s. Whats next for you? A restaurant/bar right near Hooray Henry’s and a good amount of events. I also am doing a good amount of work with some charities that I am passionate about. Now lets talk a little bit about yourself: Where did you come from? Los Angeles Whats a typical day like for you? It varies quite a bit but I am usually up at 8am and do most of my emails in the morning. I do most of the business side of meetings all day up until around 4pm. I usually take 2 hours off and then go to SHOREbar for the opening (which is at 7pm) and have a dinner or drinks meeting (usually with a client) and then go to Bootsy Bellows or Hooray Henry’s (depending on which one is open)...or if it is a saturday then I am at all 3 venues. Tell us something the people don’t know about you? I am highly supertitious (some people think it is OCD)....I have to do things a certain way each time. If its not your venues, what other places are your favorites and why? Chateau Marmont and Craig’s. I lvoe them because it is like a family.

And the most recent one Hooray Henry’s, what was your idea for creating this London theme venue?

Quick questions:

I have a very close group of fun and creative friends that live in L.A. now but are from London. The more I was around them the more I realized that I needed to cater a concept to them. Since I had a love for the London architecture and culture I decided

INTERVIEW

JOHN SOFIO’S

How would you explain Hooray Henry’s concept? Conceptually HH is the Aristocrat’s manor taken over for the night by his privileged Heir..London Cool for the night…The spirit of Henry lives through the Trophy Wall filled with vintage Cornish cycling awards, while the collection of his memories and mementos encountered by our guests at the entry speaks of a life well lived in the early 70’s. We also created a large custom caricature painting of our friends and built a wall above the bar to place it, further endearing and personalizing the space. What’s your favorite London inspired architectural aspect of Hooray Henry’s?

The front façade is a case study of southwestern England’s typical ‘highstreet’ storefront - a repurposed home on a commercial walk. The scale and balance of the elevation as it sits comfortably along Beverly Blvd. is warm and inviting - a gift to the street in true human scale. Your designs were based on London themes. Can you tell us more about it? The story of the English Heir, privileged and comfortable, throwing a party for his friends and admirers in his London flat for the night, excitement bound. The inspiration of the 70’s British-mod brought to date in a contemporary and elegant room finishes off the experience night after night.

17

Can you go more in depth on how you created the technology and concept for the 3D projector wall at Hooray Henry’s? Is this an area of specialty for you?

I designed the wall to receive my custom graphic video projection art. I mapped my projections precisely to the form and shape of the wall.

I designed a laser art installation as a modernist screen. The structure reveals itself through the night as smoke and haze fills the room. This adds to the layering, which is exploded by the studied and deliberate placement of the mirrors throughout. I believe this totality of design, technology and the study of my previous work, has allowed me to bring this precision and centeredness to my spaces. What inspired the DJ booth to be center stage?

We Dee-Jay the wall during the night in-sync with our lighting design controlled by our light installation artist. The room is driven by our DJ’s momentum. As the innovator of this moment, I develop the energy of the room through this layering.

The shape of the room and the previous spaces I designed in the room (Guy’s Bar and The Beverly) inspired me to position the DJ in the room along the east wall. Surrounded by our friends and guests, level with the people and highlighted by the 3-D

The 3-D projection wall, used in a permanent space as part of the architecture and integral to the balance of the room, is unseen in a typical nightclub setting.

18

wall above, the DJ is the center of the party while being perfectly and intimately integrated into the energy of the night. What is the success and difference in all your design concepts? As an Ethnologist I believe in the necessary study of the moment for which I am designing. I reach for truth in my design solutions. I strive to create what is familiar and new, known and exciting. Design success is perfected by my unique ability to control the process. By designing and building my own work, from concept

and structure to finishes and completion, all decisions are layered as they are executed. This process allows each space to exist in its own time and place…one of the highest forms of art. What are some of your favorite projects you have previously created? Shore Bar in the Pacific Palisades offered me a moment to study traditional architectural detailing of classical buildings on Catalina, Martha’s Vineyard. My own experience growing up along the water on the East Coast added to the comfort experienced in the space.

19

Bootsy Bellows allowed me to explore my love of the 60’s elegant nightlife. How did you come to collaborate on Hooray Henry’s? I designed and built Bootsy Bellows for my friends John Terzian, Brian Toll, Markus Molinari and David Arquette. As the design-

20

er and builder of the original structure and nightclub Guy’s Bar in 2008, and with my experience and success with The Beverly in the same space, they invited me to help conceive the new concept behind Hooray Henry’s. They place unshakable trust and confidence in my abilities and ideas.

Pascal Mouawad Bio

W

ith panache, innovation and an inspired vision, Pascal Mouawad has made his mark as the fourth generation of the prestigious Mouawad group and “Man behind Glamhouse” (glamboutique.com) , carrying the company’s reputation for excellence in jewelry to new heights. Born into a family that has owned a number of the world’s most important diamonds, Pascal was immersed in the dazzling world of jewelry from a young age. Raised in Geneva, Switzerland, Pascal followed his graduation from high school with a move to Los Angeles to pursue his further education. His choice of location was astute; for he already harbored the determination to one day grow the Mouawad family business much further beyond its European base to the United States. After undergraduate studies at California’s Pepperdine University, he went on to obtain his Gemology Degree from the Gemological Institute of America, which he followed with an MBA from UCLA’s Anderson School of Management. Leaving academia behind, in 1999 Pascal made the move to New York from where he set to work putting his vision for the family business into action. He began by broadening the company’s presence and reach with its first website www.mondera.com. From this virtual base, he expanded recognition for the Mouawad name online and across the world.

26

The US, and specifically Hollywood, remained at the heart of Pascal’s vision for the company. His grandfather before him had earned a prestigious status as jeweler to royalty across the world. Decades later, Pascal brought an innovative twist to this family tradition by courting the glamorous ‘royalty’ of the modern day - iconic celebrities - with Mouawad’s renowned European traditions and craftsmanship at Glamhouse. His creative talent first came to fruition in 2000, when he partnered with Victoria’s Secret to design and build the most luxurious and expensive lingerie ever made, the multi million dollar Fantasy Bras, covering some of the world’s sexiest supermodels in Mouawad diamonds. This dazzling story continued to sizzle, with Mouawad being the only jeweler to hold the accolade of designing the Victoria’s Secret fantasy bra for six years. Supermodels weren’t the only celebrities lining up to be covered in Mouawad jewels, though. No red carpet event could be complete without Mouawad creations adorning the necks and wrists of Hollywood’s hottest stars. Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Kidman, Eva Longoria, Gwen Stefani, Faith Hill, Mary J. Blige, Giselle Bundchen, Heidi Klum, Tyra Banks are just the beginning of a long list of celebrities won over by the combined charms of Pascal Mouawad and his family’s irresistible gems. In 2006 Pascal made the pivotal decision to move the company’s offices from New York on the East Coast of the USA to Los Angeles on the West Coast. The relocation helped

nurture Mouawad’s growing relations with Hollywood’s A-list. Once again demonstrating pioneering innovation, Pascal took Mouawad’s celebrity relationships yet further. In addition to dressing some of the hottest stars with his extravagant jewels, Pascal also began collaborating with them to create their own collections under the Mouawad label and Glamhouse. The move broke new ground in the world of fine jewelry and set Mouawad apart from other jewelers. Under Pascal’s guidance, Mouawad USA’s division has emerged as a creative haven for artists and celebrities looking to create jewelry backed by the tradition, quality and heritage of the Mouawad brand.

27

28

How did you start in the Business? I was born into the world of jewelry but began my celebrity jewelry lines with supermodel, Heidi Klum years ago. Glamhouse really took off when I started collaborating with Nicole Richie and created House of Harlow 1960. How would you describe and think of your style, what kind of jewelry do you make and what type of materials do you prefer? Style is forever changing. For me personally, my style is sophisticated but affordable. I try to translate that into my product and continue to make our lines are attainable for everyone. We have so many options when it comes to fashion jewelry, we have the ability to be creative by choosing specific stones and crystals to work with. What new directions do you hope to move in the future? Do you have big plans, new ideas or designs you will be exploring soon? We just launched Metal Haven by Kendall and Kylie Jenner, which is exclusively available at Nordstrom BP. We have several big announcements coming up, I would love to tell you now but you’ll have to wait and see. What keeps you inspired and motivated? Honestly love the art of jewelry. You can create a whole look around just one piece of jewelry, its timeless, its classic, jewelry never “goes out of style”.

29

30

When it comes to jewelry design, what is your secret talent? Trends, we not only can forecast what trends are coming around the corner but we have the ability to invent and manipulate trends.

Where are your products sold? Nordstrom, Opening Ceremony, ShopBop and Piperlime but everyone can shop at glamboutique.com for all our designs. How difficult has been to be so famous in Hollywood?

Is there an era that influences your work? All of our lines really reflect the individual celebrity and their personal style. Do you have a muse or type of woman that you design for?

Haha well I guess the paparazzi recognize me but I wouldn’t call myself ‘famous’, I’m trying to grow several celebrity brands so they translate into timeless elegant, versatile jewelry lines.

Yes, women of all ages that love fashion jewelry and like to make a statement. What has been the most exciting moment of your career so far? I believe so far for Glamhouse it has been growing House of Harlow 1960 into the brand it is today. What is your favorite accessories trend of the moment? Women can’t go wrong with a layered necklace. What are you working on now? I wish I could tell. I can tell you that Kristin Cavallari will be coming out with a new collection soon. Her first collection did great, I’m excited to launch her second collection with Glamhouse.

T

he 2013 “MTV Video Music Awards” erupted with an explosion of musical firsts and epic moments from the Barclays Center, as the first award show to be broadcast live from Brooklyn.

“Birth of Venus” ending. Closing the show, against the backdrop one of the most iconic Brooklyn landmarks, the Brooklyn Bridge, Katy Perry roared into a boxing ring to perform her new single “Roar.”

Justin Timberlake earned a standing ovation after delivering an extra sensory performance (the longest in VMA history) featuring a medley of his biggest hits. Starting in the hallways of Barclays and winding his way into the arena, Timberlake performed from every corner of the house. He glided, danced and sang his way through throngs of fans during the show-stopping performance, including a highly anticipated reunion with his former ‘NSYNC band mates for the first time in a decade.

The show also included first-ever television premieres of Kanye West’s “Blood on the Leaves,” where he samples Nina Simone’s rendition of Billie Holliday’s indelible “Strange Fruit.” From a darkened stage, Kanye powerfully and in silhouette delivered a riveting performance. Drake started his set by serenading and later grooving the audience with his hit “Started from the Bottom,” and Bruno Mars seduced all with a tropically infused rendition of “Gorilla.” Miley Cyrus made her VMA debut as she emerged from, yes -- the belly of a 30-foot teddy bear to perform “We Can’t Stop.”

In one of the most intimate performances of the show, NBA player Jason Collins and A$ap Rocky introduced Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, who were surrounded from above by American flags as they delivered a powerful rendition of their anthem of love, acceptance and equality, “Same Love.” They were joined for an emotionally charged vocal accompaniment by Mary Lambert and surprise guest, super star Jennifer Hudson.

The VMAs were bookended by world premiere performances from two of the biggest female artists on the planet. ell, out of all the bizarre things you’ve seen up on the internet till today, we bet that this is the craziest you’ve ever seen. Eminem and Taylor Swift: this has got to be a joke, right? Well, surprise, surprise! It isn’t. This is your all out list of reasons as to why the rapper and the country pop diva are more or less the most similar stars in contemporary times. For your better understanding, let’s just look at the list we’ve compiled and how you’d actually be surprised to know that the King of Rap and the Princess of Pop are more alike than you’d like to think. Never Be in a Relationship with Either of the Two If you’d ask Mariah Carey and Joe Jonas that question, they’d pretty much just tell you that rendezvousing with either of them is just about the worst idea ever. Why is that, we hear you ask? Well, for starters, you don’t want an entire song written out about your relationship! From Eminem’s Mockingbird, Superman and to Cleaning out My Closet to Taylor Swift’s Teardrops on my Guitar and I Knew You Were Trouble; you can see that both of them like bashing out their exes for their ever broken hearts. Moreover, you can even see that that both of these celebrities will make it a point to make

40

things awkward with their exes, despite the fact that everyone agreed to end it on civil terms. Their relationship history is ultimately turbulent and practically everyone knows Eminem’s relationship with Kim, Hailey his daughter, Mariah Carey and his mom. On the same hand, everyone even knows about Taylor Swift’s boyfriend from high school (poor guy, must be so hard for him to live with the memory) and his multiple relationship issues with Joe Jonas and even Taylor Lautner (Imagine having to choose between Kristen Stewart and Taylor Swift; what a worry!).

They Both Stand Break the Norm Ever wondered how Eminem and Taylor Swift are so different from most of the people in their field that people would have practically mistaken them for the wrong people. First off, let’s just look at Taylor Swift. Youngest in the genre, bringing bubble gum pop into the mix and shaking it up by bringing tweens to love country pop. Bet Keith Richards didn’t get just as enough fans in a lifetime as Taylor Swift got them in her first album release. Moreover, her songs can be more so related to than opposed to any other country singer to have produced their own songs.

Eminem is practically one of the few stars who have risen to the top by breaking all the norms. First off, he came from the very bottom and he only ever wrote about his personal relationships which came some of the most sought after rap music albums the world has seen to date. Moreover, he’s the first white rapper to have broken barriers in the rap world and that is something that most people have commended him for time and again. Moreover, he has also been one of the most outspoken rappers alive and his personal life is practically public property. This image has led to several comparisons with the likes of Tupac Shakur. Both of their abilities to break the norm and carve their own niche has given them unprecedented fame and fortune.

They Produce their Own Music Every time you see Beyonce and Rihanna, you’d know that there would be around fifty musicians and lyricists planning the entire three minute song. Yet, here’s the difference between them and Eminem and Swift. Swift makes her music and writes her own lyrics. It was reported that the starlet kept a lyric book with her at all times so as to jot down any music or lyrics that came to her. Moreover, she has been known for telling recorders to tune her voice as she pleased and also, she has ensured that none of her lyrics change, even if they cost her multiple awards. She will ensure that whatever she writes is what she feels and that is possibly the reason as to why most of her songs are about a broken heart (says a lot about her, but who are we to judge?) Eminem’s probably best known for producing songs that possibly reduce one to tears. The man’s depressing lyrics and serenades to his wife, and lullabies for his daughter are particularly touching. They aren’t even the aggressive kind that you’d end up hating. His music’s true and he will bash anyone who so much so as tries to judge him. His entire concept of how “can’t be partial towards Marshall” is something that must be commended for and therefore, with all due respect, his music has soared up the billboard charts and right into our hearts (however, we’d like you to ease up a little on bashing Mariah this much)

42

They’ve Won Grammys As jealous as most artists they may be, both Eminem and T-Swizzle have earned just about enough Grammys to make them stand out in front of the world. One of the most shocking aspects about this entire scenario is that both of them were super young when they earned their first accolades and there has been no looking back ever since. Of course, let’s just hope that this streak continues and both the stars continue to win as much as they possibly can. There you have it! That’s an entire list of reasons as to why Eminem and Taylor Swift are more alike than any of the cross genre singers to have existed up until now. However, you must remember at all times that both of them deal with different audiences and therefore, their likelihood of succeeding in one another’s field is absolutely non-existent. However, the next time that you download either of their songs or pop in a CD; just remember that they’ve broken norms and barriers in their own right and they deserve to be respected through and through.

FITNESS

A

s a Personal Trainer, I am approached almost daily, with training and nutrition questions. What works and what doesn’t work? What is myth and what is reality? It’s important to understand that every BODY is unique. And, every BODY deserves a customized approach to diet and fitness training, based upon a many factors: height, weight, genetics, gender, personal history, medical conditions, and more...

58

Aside from these very important considerations, however, the most common questions have simple answers, based upon scientific findings that allow me to educate and guide my clients to make smarter, healthier lifestyle decisions. The most common questions and answers below address myths and truths, and are based upon research determined by the American Council on Exercise. Here they are:

Myth or Truth #1: Eating late at night makes what you eat turn into body fat. The truth is this: it’s not when you eat that makes you fat. It’s what and how much you eat that makes you fat. And the simple fact is that weight gain happens when caloric intake exceeds caloric expenditure. So, whether your preference is 6 small healthy meals a day, or 3 slightly larger meals per day, you will definitely gain weight if you over-eat and eat fatty, unhealthy foods. A common tendency is that people tend to go for sugars and fatty sweets late at night; which is the cause for weight gain (after a seemingly healthy day of light eating). I suggest making a behavioral eating plan that encourages and promotes a healthy food consumption plan, based upon your caloric expenditure daily.

Myth or Truth #2: Carbohydrates are bad. The fact is there are simple carbohydrates (sugars) and there are complex carbohydrates ( rice, grains, potatoes , beans) that are stored as glycogen. Not all carbs are created equal. Fiber rich fruits, vegetables and whole grains are the optimal sources of carbohydrates as fuel. Carbs with a low glycemic index ( like plain yogurt, strawberries and oatmeal) are better for weight loss. Foods with a higher glycemic index (like rice, dried fruit and bread) are optimal for athletic performance and refueling. It’s when carbs are severely limited, that carbohydrate stores become depleted. It may seem like you are losing weight by giving up carbs, but what’s really happening is you are los-

ing water weight. This is because water is needed to store glycogen (carbohydrates), and as glycogen becomes depleted, water weight is lost. As soon as that glycogen is put back in the body however, the water weight is regained. So diets that restrict carbs, restrict your ability to perform optimal, high intensity workouts and only temporarily decrease your body weight - (water weight). It’s important to stick with healthy carbs, combined with protein, and only then will you observe the muscle definition form and the pounds melt away.

Myth or Truth #3: Some people are genetically overweight and therefore simply can’t lose weight or keep the weight off. While genetics are an important factor in determining how easy it is for one to lose weight, everyone can lose weight and keep it off. There are actually many factors that affect how much weight one will lose and how quickly weight loss will occur. Some of these factors include gender, the amount of muscle mass one has, and one’s current weight. Did you know that men will lose weight in their abdomen more quickly than women? Not fair, right ladies?! Also, people who have a large muscle mass tend to lose weight faster than people with low muscle mass. People who have more weight to lose will see more weight loss much sooner than those with just a few pounds to lose, (assuming both individuals are consuming the same amount of calories and doing the same physical activity/workout). The bottom line is this: let’s not make excuses for our weight and health. Hit the gym. Eat healthy and eat light.

59

Myth or Truth #4: Caffeine intake enhances your workout. This is a truth and a myth. While caffeine can cause negative effects such as decreased bone density in women, sleeplessness, headaches from withdrawals and irritability (to name a few), research findings do show that caffeine enhances athletic performance. Here’s the catch: Caffeine enhances your workout if you are NOT a regular user. Researchers defined a regular user as someone who consumes more than 300 milligrams per day (2 cups of coffee) A non-user consumes less than 50 milligrams per day (a half a cup of coffee). A non-user who consumes caffeine prior to exercise, will sustain duration, quicken speed and feel increased energy (and less perceived exertion) during high intensity physical activity. So the bottom line is this: Stop consuming sugar ridden - energy drinks, sodas and coffee.... But do consider an occasional cup of joe prior to a long outdoor bike ride.

Myth or Truth #5: Doing crunches (aka situps) every day will help trim my waistline. Uh. No. One of the most common fitness myths is the concept known as “spot training” or “spot reduction.” The truth is this: It is not possible to lose weight in one area of your body without affecting other parts of your body. This myth of spot training exists because we wish it were true. The bad news is that 6-pack abs do not happen from 1000 abdominal crunches alone. Spot training is anatomically impossible because weight loss is a result of total body metabolism, caloric intake and caloric expenditure. Plus, factors that are beyond our control, (such as genetics) determine where our bodies will lose weight first. In terms of muscle definition, doing 1000 crunches will give you strong abs, but if there is a layer of visceral fat around your belly, you aren’t going to see that 6-pack. There needs to be a balance of muscle growth and weight loss. Scientists spent 27-days with 13 male subjects who were asked to do 5000 sit-ups. Fat biopsies were taken from these guy’s abdomens, buttocks and upper backs both before and after the study. Guess what? Fat decreased in all three areas, not just the targeted spot.

60

What research has proven is this: exercise that burns a lot of calories will result in weight loss evenly around the body — including the target area. So if you want a slim waist line, then eat light, eat healthy, burn calories with cardio and interval training, and get in those abdominal crunches! I hope the truths behind these myths have served you well! Stay focused and committed to your personal health and fitness goals... and I will see you in the gym! Soccer in the Sand: By Aaron Perez

ionel Messi. Cristiano Ronaldo. Wayne Rooney. Agustine Ruiz. Francisco Velasquez, aka “Frank.” Any of these players seem like NONhousehold names? That is because both Ruiz and Velasquez are both El Salvadorian national team soccer players. However, they play on the national BEACH soccer team, which in the country is the most popular sport! And in the world of beach soccer, this year just so happens to be the year of the Beach Soccer World Cup, which takes place in Tahiti starting September 15th. The United States has qualified and is looking to do well! In preparation for the tournament, the US National beach soccer team recently traveled to El Salvador and played four friendly games. Two were against the El Salvador national team, and two were against local beach soccer clubs. One of the players who is hoping to make the final twelve man roster for the World Cup is the LA Blues very own Shay Spitz. Spitz was chosen for this minitour out of an eighteen-man player pool, which he has been in since being capped back in 2012 at the Copa America in Brazil. That tournament featured the United States, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico in a four team tournament, and Spitz got his first taste of beach action.

62

These four friendly games were an audition, essentially, in which Spitz and several other players tried to show off their best beach soccer skills in order to be chosen. About his performances,

Spitz said, “Personally, I thought I did well. It is a completely different game to outdoor soccer, and takes some time to adapt. Obviously I lack experience but getting such a great opportunity and immersing myself in the beach soccer culture with such great players will help me grow on the sand.” One of the most memorable parts of the trip was the crowd. Being that it is the biggest sport in the country, spectators came out in full force to back their countrymen. “The crowds were signing and chanting the whole time, and it was hard to hear my teammates on the sand,” Shay said. The most amazing part of it was actually during the final game, when in pre-game it began to rain heavily. Spitz said, “The rain drove the crowd on, and even a lightning storm during the actual match did nothing but shock the crowd into a higher frenzy!” Shay is hoping to get the call saying that he is selected for the final roster. “I would love nothing more then to get a call letting me know I have been selected for the World Cup team, but if that does not happen it has still been a phenomenal experience to be part of,” said Spitz. It is always a privilege and an honor to represent your country in any sport. This year’s World Cup in Tahiti will be a great chance for the Americans to prove they can hang with the very best in the sport, and we wish the best of luck to Shay and the other players!

hristian Yount is the long-snapper for the Cleveland Browns. Yes, that’s right, the longsnapper. By way of Tesoro High school then UCLA, Yount is going on his third season with the Browns, and recently signed an agreement for a fiveyear contract extension. And while it may seem that his job is simple and that anyone could do it, one may want to reconsider signing up for their local team to be the snapper. A long-snapper is needed in two situations throughout a game, a field goal or a punt. When a field goal is needed, a snapper is asked to snap a ball upsidedown through his legs to a holder. In the NFL, it is widely assumed that a snapper knows how many rotations his ball will take over the eight yard span, all so that the laces of the football, when caught, are facing out towards the uprights. On a punt, the snapper snaps it upside-down through his legs to a punter who is usually fifteen yards away, and is expected to hit him right on his kicking-leg hip bone. And all of that is only half of it. “Most people don’t realize we are then supposed to block a very large human being until the field goal is kicked, and then on a punt we have to run down and try to make a tackle on some fast athletic guy,” said Yount. When put in perspective, the job of a long-snapper is basically unheralded, but is crucial to football team’s successes and failures. “The intricacy of the position gets lost in how easy it may look,” he said.

64

Looking deeper into the position, one quickly sees the importance and nerve a long-snapper must have. Despite all the pressure, Christian was quick to point out that it his life OUTSIDE of football that helps take the stress and pressure off the job. “When I am there [at the facility] it is all business, and when I leave, I try to think about other things as much as possible!” he said. Here are a few examples. First, Christian loves the outdoors. “After season last year, I went hiking in the Grand Canyon by myself. I love the outdoors,” said Yount. He also mentioned, “I love to play golf and hang out with my dog,” which are very normal and fun things to do. One of his most recent hobbies, which should quickly be taking over Cleveland as the next “it” thing, is paddleboarding on Lake Eerie. He said, “Listen man, I don’t have the beach, per-say, to go to so I make the best out of what I got!” The trend that readers may be seeing is that as with anything, balance is crucial. When on the field, Yount works extremely hard. “I am very dedicated to my craft and take the job very seriously, because it is such a unique skill that takes a lot of effort to be great.” Remember, there are only thirty-two NFL teams, and each usually carry only one snapper. That means there are technically only thirty-two jobs available in the entire world. Of this stat Yount said,” [I am] very blessed to have this job. So many other great snappers are not in the NFL, and I cherish each and every day.” However, the sport does not define him. “If I close my eyes and envision myself, I do not en-

vision myself as a snapper. I am just a normal guy with things that I love to do and things I enjoy,” he said. And that is the message he tried to convey. “What makes me good is that I do not let the sport define me. I stay balanced, work my tail off at all times, and enjoy the opportunity I have been given,” he said. With all that said, Christian looks forward to this season. “Hopefully we can get some more wins and push for the playoffs,” he said. And while NFL fans can now look for him when the Browns line up on Sundays, you can also check him out on twitter @theYount. “I am great on twitter man, seriously, check out my awesome tweets.” Yet another example of life outside of football, and to remember that whenever you see a long-snapper about to snap to his kicker or punter, realize that there is just so much more to it than that!

o say that the Jaguar F-Type is rolling into its second model year nicely would be an understatement. It’s better said to be boisterously roaring ahead, bringing the famous English automaker newfound public interest. Jaguar’s first bona fide sports car in more than five decades is generating a wealth of whispers to accompany the richly harmonic growl of its dual exhaust pipes.

66

One can hardly turn on the television without seeing the F-Type somewhere. The mainstream press has wrapped its figurative arms around the sleek new roadster, touting its good looks and potent engine with noticeable enthusiasm. Jaguar has certainly been showered with hearty, informed praise for the

F-Type, with The Wall Street Journal’s Dan Neil suggesting it is the best sub-$100,000 sports car currently on the road, and Car & Driver summing its opinions up by saying, “On paper and in person, the car impresses.” The F-Type is a sharp departure from Jaguar’s last attempt at a sports car, the XK, which, though nice enough as it is, merely echoed the Aston Martin DB9, a car that was inspired by designs from current Jaguar Director of Design, Ian Callum. The F-Type has tapped into a kind of awe that the XK never did, and in doing so has brought the Tata Motors-run Jaguar marque a new life.

So what makes the Jaguar F-Type so special? Let’s dive into the specs and pundits’ praises to learn whether or not this big cat is the stuff legends are made of.

The beast beneath the bonnet You really can’t start a discussion of the F-Type without first talking about the car’s mechanical specs. At the heart of the base-model F-Type is a 340 horsepower 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine. The engine is paired with an eight-speed flappy paddle gearbox. The result is a top speed of 161 mph, and a snappy zero-to-sixty time of 5.1 seconds. That’s slightly quicker than the Porsche Cayman, an obvious competitor, price-wise, to the F-Type. One of the more interesting aspects of the F-Type is the exhaust note it generates. There’s a definite “purr,” guttural as it may be, to the way Jaguar designers have tuned the engine. It modulates, it has a high note and a low note, as well as a cer-

tain pulse that makes it seem as though it’s ready to come unhinged, before reigning itself back in again. Needless to say, this can be used to startle the living daylights out of some unsuspecting pedestrians, should the driver be so inclined.

LIFESTYLE

In designing the F-Type, Jaguar has drawn on its abundance of experience in other areas, like luxury sedans, to infuse a healthy dollop of class in the spritely, all-aluminum design of the F-Type. The result is a Jaguar sports car that has more in common with the iconic Jags of years gone by – the C-Type, the D-Type, and E-Type – than with more recent offerings like the XK. It’s as though Jaguar merely pressed “pause” on its alphabet-designated sports car story with the demise of the E-Type, spun its wheels for fifty years, and picked right up where the automaker had left off.

Case in point, I was enjoying lunch in a quiet restaurant the other day when a red F-Type rocketed past the window right in front of me, charging through a yellow light, and announcing its presence well before I could rightly see what the raucous was all about. I dropped my fork upon hearing the unmistakable purr just in time to catch a glimpse of the car’s stubby backside as it left the otherwise placid scene as quickly as it had come to it.

A thing of beauty The exhaust note of the F-Type is enough to turn a few heads all on its own, to say the least. Nevertheless, Jaguar has seen fit to make the F-Type very easy on the eyes. The car’s aluminum body panels sit along an all-aluminum chassis, greatly reducing the overall weight of the vehicle. The curving contours make it one seriously striking sight to behold. Jaguar has included active aerodynamics in the F-Type, including a rear spoiler that juts out when the car reaches 60 mph. The maker has also added posh deployable door handles that reside flush with the outer door panel until they are extended by a press of a button on the key fob. In terms of overall aesthetics, the two-seat F-Type

has more in common with the C-Type than the alphabetically preceding E-Type. There’s a tiny bit of BMW Z8 styling in the back of the car, as many reviewers have noted, with no complaints there. There’s also a residual hint of Aston Martin influence in the overall silhouette – especially with regard to the side vents. But the grille, the front intakes, and the Star Warsinspired headlamp assemblies are truly original. With design nods like these, it seems that Jaguar is making an attempt at honoring their heritage, restoring it to its prior glory, and forging ahead. That’s a tall order for any automaker, but Jaguar is hitting upon the right combination of visual features to solidify the F-Type as a modern classic.

Inside the Jaguar F-Type At the center of the F-Type’s cockpit is what Jaguar refers to as a “grab handle.” Where I come from, we have another name for those, one that starts with “oh” and ends with “bar” – and has a four letter word in between. Jaguar’s website claims that this grab handle doubles as a sort of barrier between the driver and passenger in what it calls a “1+1 drivercentric cockpit.”

Right. What that means is that the cabin is decidedly asymmetrical, with emphasis on the driver.

The dash-mounted instruments are clear, simple, and refreshingly analog. There’s a five-inch display between the speedometer and tachometer, providing vehicle feedback to supplement the analog gauges. The infotainment complement of the F-Type includes an eight-inch touch-screen display with stereo, satellite navigation, and telephone functionality. Sound is provided by a 380-watt Meridian sound system that packs an impressive 10 speakers within the two-seat cab. The leather-clad steering wheel features radio and cruise controls. The steering wheel is also heated. The paddle shifters for the transmission are on the back of the steering wheel, as we’ve all come to expect on European sports cars as of late. The seats are six-way adjustable, manually or electrically. Seats are upholstered in leather with suede center sections, to keep both driver and passenger firmly planted during cornering. In the F-Type’s stock configuration, the seats are not heated, but heated seats can be had as part of either the Climate Pack or Premium Pack options packages. Of course, owing to the E-Type famously finicky pushbutton start, the F-Type has keyless ignition with a nice, bright, meant-to-be-seen orange button mount-

ed prominently in the dash. Mind you, the F-Type’s pushbutton seems to actually work, unlike the one in the quirky old beloved E-Type.

So, how does the Jaguar F-Type really measure up?

Whichever model you choose, if you’re a lover of the classic Jaguar C-, D-, or E-Type, you’re likely to enjoy the evolutionary descendant that is the FType. Jaguar has certainly had its ups and downs over the past five decades, but by all accounts, the slick, nimble, and positively swanky F-Type is truly a legend in the making.

At a base price of $69, 000, the F-Type is an obvious challenger to the Porsche Cayman; a car that, frankly, will outrun anything Jaguar has ever built. That being said, the F-Type is still worth consideration by anyone who can appreciate a more luxurious ride than the one offered by the Cayman. In fact, the F-Type may be perfectly positioned against the considerably more expensive Aston Martin V8 Vantage Volante. For those who value the refinement of the Volante, but want something more current than the aging Vantage platform, the F-Type distinguishes itself nicely against the comparatively no-frills Cayman. But if speed is your thing, you might have to look further up in the F-Type lineup, past the base model. For those shoppers, Jaguar offers the F-Type S ($81,000), which boosts power to 380 horses, resulting in a zero-to-sixty time of 4.8 seconds and a top speed of 171 mph. For those who are considering the Porsche 911 Carrera S, the F-Type V8 costs six grand less, at $92,000, and serves up 495 horsepower while benefiting from increased comfort and greater overall luxury than the 911.
