Petroleum

Also known as crude oil, Petroleum is oil. It is one out of the three nonrenewable resources that come from fossil fuels. Petroleum is used to make things ranging from plastics, petroleum jelly (vasoline), and diesel fuel.

Petroleum is a nonrenewable resource because eventually into the future as we continue to burn fossil fuels, fossil fuels with take millions of years to form again.

The general molecular formula for this resource is CnH2n+2. This molecule has an ionic bond. The elements that make up this molecule are carbon and hydrogen. Carbon is from the 14th group and the 2nd period. Hydrogen is from the 1st group and 1st period.

Characteristics of Groups and Periods Some characteristics of the 1st group and period are that each element in the 1st period has electrons in the first electron shell only and the 1st group, the alkali metals, have one electron in their valence shell.

Some characteristics of 14th group and 2nd period are that the 14th group is called the Carbon Family and the 2nd period across this period electrons fill the second electron shell.

Petroleum Some benefits of petroleum ● It is cheap, ● It can produce a large amount of energy. ● Is a highly dense fuel source. ● It can be used in a wide range of applications.

Some negative factors of petroleum ● When an oil spill happens it pollutes the environment. ● Produces carbon emissions to the atmosphere when used.

Prediction 1

The trend shows that the United States oil production has been decreasing over the past thirty years. In contrast, Venezuela’s oil production has decreasing over the past ten years. By 2030, the United States’ will be producing 7,183 thousand of barrels of oil a day per year. By 2030, Venezuela will be producing 2,788 thousands of barrels of oil of a day per year.

Analysis

The rate of change for the United States is different from the rate of change in Venezuela because according to Bp.Com, 2019, the United States’ and Venezuela’s oil production has decreased over the years.

I believe that my predictions on my two previous slides will be proven wrong because in the future because as technology advances and as we discover more on Earth, we will soon be able to reduce production of nonrenewable resources and carbon emissions to our atmosphere.

My calculations show that production for oil in the United States and Venezuela has hit its “peak”. I feel that this is accurate because in between these three decades and so on, oil productions has decreased from the amount in the past.
