Gond paintings are a form of painting from folk and tribal art that is practised by one of the largest tribes in India with whom it shares its name. Gond comes from the Dravidian expression, Kond, which means ‘the green mountain’. More than 1400 years ago, the Gond tribe painted and carved art on caves’ walls, which all belong to the Mesolithic Period. The Gonds believe that viewing good images brings good luck. Their paintings are also a means to record and pass on historical knowledge and teachings.

Utkaliya Collection: Moving beyond organics. Understanding the place and space of brown cotton
The colour brown embodies this earth on which thrives all plant and animal life, great and small. Long forgotten due to its low commercial value, brown cotton is experiencing a renaissance in popularity among those who want to rediscover the “homemade” aesthetic. Not as commercially coveted as white cotton, its cultivation has long been a family affair. Its shorter staple made brown cotton difficult to manage on a large scale and, therefore, difficult to sell. The inhabitants grew brown cotton for their own consumption.
Naturally grown brown cotton is pest and drought-resistant.Born coloured, the fabric is non-allergic and has excellent UV sun protection properties.
Organic and Eco-friendly: Naturally grown Brown cotton is cultivated without the use of synthetic fertilisers, pesticides, or genetic modifications. This makes it an environmentally sustainable choice, reducing harmful effects on the soil, water, and overall ecosystem.
Natural Color: The distinctive brown colour of cotton is a result of the natural pigmentation in its fibres. Unlike conventional white cotton, no chemical dyes or bleaching agents are used to alter its natural appearance, making it an attractive option for those seeking naturally coloured textiles.
Softness and Comfort: Brown cotton fibers tend to be softer and more breathable than their conventional counterparts. This makes products made from Brown cotton comfortable to use, especially in warm climates.
Hypoallergenic: As Brown cotton is grown without the use of harsh chemicals, it has the potential to be hypoallergenic. People with sensitive skin or allergies may find Brown cotton textiles gentler and less likely to cause irritation or reactions.
Support for Sustainable Farming Communities: By choosing naturally grown Brown cotton from India, you support local farming communities that prioritise sustainable agricultural practices. This helps to promote a more equitable and environmentally conscious textile industry.
