Now that 2011 is winding down we can in retrospect look at the goals, achievements, failures and all those things that have been done. The Santa Clarita Valley, our valley, is growing better and bigger each day and as a growing community it faces new and different challen­ ges. Our diversity, from our littlest kids to their grandparents, our Latinos and our other Americans, our men and our women, have created this interesting amalgam of work and ideas that with hard work will bring a bright future to our lovely home that we call Our Valleys.

Our Valleys staff and contributors wish all our friends, family, clients and readers a very safe holiday season and a 2012 filled with successes, health and happiness.

Ahora que 2011 llega a su fin podemos ver en retrospectiva las metas, los lo­ gros, las fallas y todas aquellas cosas que como comunidad se han logrado.

El Valle de Santa Clarita, nuestro Valle, esta creciendo mejor y más grande cada día y como comunidad que crece, enfrenta retos nuevos y diferentes, pero con la diversidad de la población que vive en nuestra ciudad, desde los niños pequeños a sus abuelos, de los Latinos a los Americanos, de hombres a mujeres, todos creamos esta amalgama interesante de ideas y trabajo arduo que da forma al gran futuro que le espera a este hermoso lugar al cual le llamamos Nuestros Valles.

The New Kindle Fire from Amazon El Nuevo Kindle Fire de Amazon

O

n September 28, Amazon introduced its first Tablet with Android operating system called “Kindle Fire”, a reasonable step in the strategy of the company and in March opened its “Appstore for Android” that competes directly against Google’s Android Market.

El 28 de septiembre, Amazon presentó su primera Tablet con sistema operativo Android llamada “Kindle Fire”, un paso razonable en la estrategia de la compañía ya que en marzo abrió su “Appstore for Android” que compite directamente contra el Android Market de Google.

Amazon captures about 30% of the eCommerce in the U.S. and with this release, it seems that it will use this tablet as a showcase to sell even more. In fact it is mentioned that Amazon will subsidize the new Kindle, that is, lose some money on every tablet sold, but will make its products much more visible to a wider range of consumers.

For this reason, it is a bit difficult to understand who are the winners, who are the losers and who are the Kindle Fire rivals.

Amazon captura alrededor del 30% del eCommerce en Estados Unidos y por lo que se ha anunciado, parece que utilizará su tableta como un escaparate para vender aún más. De hecho se menciona que Amazon subsidiará, es decir, perderá un poco de dinero en cada tableta que venda, pero a cambio hará mucho más visibles sus productos a una gama más amplia de consumidores. Por esta razón es un poco difícil entender quiénes son los ganadores, los perdedores y los rivales del Kindle Fire.

The obvious comparison is against the iPad, the market leading device. At the device level, there is no competition as the technical features of the Kindle Fire set it in the low end whereas the iPad on the high end; however Amazon is a company that can compete with Apple on the media side because it offers similar products in virtually all its digital line: music, movies, books, but Amazon is much more than that.

The biggest looser I think will be its direct rival, the Nook Color from Barnes & Noble, which has sold over three million tablets, since now it is 25% more expensive, less technical specifications and with less access to content than the “Fire”.

La comparación obvia es contra el iPad, el dispositivo líder en el mercado. A nivel de dispositivo no hay ninguna competencia, ya que las características técnicas del Kindle Fire lo sitúan mas bien en la gama baja y el iPad está en la gama alta; sin embargo Amazon si es una compañía que puede competir en medios con Apple, ya que tiene productos similares en casi toda su línea digital: música, películas, libros; pero Amazon es mucho más que eso.

Entre las perdedoras, la que peor parte llevará, creo que será su rival directo, el Nook Color de Barnes & Noble, que ha vendido más de tres millones de Tablets, pero que ahora resulta 25% más caro, con menores especificaciones técnicas y menor acceso a contenidos que el “Fire”.

Other major losers are the Blackberry Playbook who already had its own problems, as well as the Tablet of companies seeking to enter the market with low prices, like the French manufacturer Archos, which surely will see a decline in their sales.

Depending on the direction Amazon takes, Google could be in the list of losers: at the moment, they do not earn anything by licensing Android, and the revenue gain from their Market store that they had guarded so jealously for a long time, will probably suffer a bit with the arrival of the Fire.

Apple, will not lose much in the hardware field: iPad will remain as the leader for some years, but Apple should reassess its strategy, because Amazon looks like them more than they would like and are a direct competitor in digital media. We also have to remember that Apple’s most innovative products like the “iCloud” are a reality thanks to the great product from Amazon: The EC2.

Microsoft should not be included among the losers, because even without having come out with a tablet running Windows 8, it continues to dominate more than 90% of the computer “desktop” market and have been very careful treating Windows 8 as an iteration of their operating system, rather than a complete makeover; on the other hand Microsoft owns rights to part of the Linux kernel on which the Android is based, since several manufacturers have to pay for licenses In conclusion, the biggest winners are the consumers, because it opens up a good cheap option, and Amazon itself, as it is put itself in a position that no other manufacturer has, except perhaps for Apple.

We’re definitely seeing some very interesting things in the tablet market.

Otras perdedoras importantes son la Playbook de Blackberry que ya tenía sus propios problemas, así como las Tablet de compañías que pretenden entrar en el mercado con bajos precios, asi como la marca francesa Archos, que seguramente verán resentidas sus ventas.

También hay que recordar que los productos más innovadores de Apple como el iCloud funcionan gracias al gran producto de Amazon: El EC2.

Microsoft no se incluye entre los perdedores, ya que aún sin haber sacado una Tablet con Windows 8 al mercado, sigue dominando más del 90% del cómputo “de escritorio” y Windows 8 ha cuidado de forma muy inteligente ser una iteración más a su sistema operativo, en vez de un rompimiento total; por otro lado Microsoft tiene los derechos sobre parte del núcleo de Linux en el que se basa Android y varios fabricantes tienen que pagar licencias.

Para concluir, los grandes ganadores, serán los consumidores, porque se abre una buena opción a bajo precio; el otro gran ganador es el propio Amazon, ya que se pone en una posición que ningún otro fabricante tiene, salvo quizás Apple.

Definitivamente estamos viendo cosas muy interesantes en el mercado de las tabletas.

Thanksgiving Accion de Gracias

T

he Thanksgiving Holiday is a traditional annual celebration of the United States. Although it is religious in origin, its considered a secular or non-religious holiday.

El día de Acción de Gracias es una celebración anual tradicional de Estados Unidos. Aunque religiosa en origen, está considerada como una festividad secular o no religiosa.

It is believed that the origin of Thanksgiving Day is based on a harvest festival in 1621 between the English settlers known as Pilgrims of Plymouth and the Wampanoag Indians. The American holiday is particularly rich in legends and symbolism.

Se cree que el origen del dia de acción de gracias se basa en una fiesta de la cosecha en 1621 entre los colonos Ingleses conocidos como Peregrinos de Plymouth y los indios Wampanoag. La fiesta estadounidense es particularmente rica en leyendas y simbolismo.

La celebración de Plymouth comenzó cuando algunos de los colonos salieron a cazar pavos o probablemente iban en busca de gansos o patos que eran más fáciles de atrapar. De pronto unos 90 indios Wampanoag hicieron su aparición a las puertas de la colonia, inquietando asi a los colonos. The celebration of Plymouth began when some of the settlers came to hunt turkeys or probably went in search of geese or ducks that were easier to catch. Suddenly about 90 Wampanoag Indians made their appearance at the gates of the colony, thus disturbing the settlers. However, in the days that followed, the two groups coexisted without incidents. The Wampanoag In­dians contributed to the celebration feast with venison, fish, sea food, stews and vegetables. Since the Plymouth settlers did not have many construction sites, most people used to eat sitting outside on the ground or in barrels with plates on their laps. Since they didn’t speak the same language, the settlers organized races, fired guns and drank liquor thus trying to establish communication with the Wampanoag. This messy celebration sealed a treaty between the two groups that lasted until King Philip’s War (1675-1676), in which hundreds of thousands of settlers and Indians were killed. The day of Thanksgiving was proclaimed as a celebration not officially until the inhabitants of the north took over the federal government. On October 3, 1863, during the Civil

War, President Abraham Lincoln officially proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving to be held on Thursday, November 26.

This celebration was proclaimed annually by all the presidents following Lincoln and the date chosen, with some exceptions, was the fourth Thursday of November.

Due to the expansion of cities and as families are separated and live far from each other, the day of Thanksgiving has become a date to reunite family members. The religious significance of this celebration was removed to allow anyone to participate in this tradition no matter what religion they practice.

Debido a la expansión de las ciudades y a que las familias se han separado y viven lejos unos de otros, el dia de Accion de Gracias se ha convertido en una fecha para reunir a los miembros de las familias. Se ha eliminado el significado religioso de esta celebración para permitir que cualquier persona pueda participar de esta tradición sin importar que religión practique.

Most people in the United States celebrate this festival with family gatherings in their homes where they prepare a feast.

In many homes it is common to say Grace. The traditional main course for dinner is a big roasted or baked turkey. This turkey is traditionally served with a filling made of cornbread and sage.

It is traditionally served with a jelly or cranberry sauce. They also tend to use vegetable dishes like green beans, sweet potatoes, and mashed potatoes with gravy, a sauce made from the juice of turkey. Also a variety of desserts are often served, pumpkin pie being the most popular. It is also common to prepare pecan and apple pies.

La mayoría de personas en los Estados Unidos celebran esta fiesta con reuniones familiares en sus hogares donde preparan un banquete. En muchas casas es común ofrecer una oración de gracias.

El plato principal tradicional para la cena es un gran pavo asado u horneado. Este pavo tradicionalmente va acompañado con un relleno hecho de pan de maíz y salvia. Se sirve tradicionalmente con una jalea o salsa de arándanos rojos. Además suelen servirse platos de verduras como los ejotes, la batata dulce (camote) y el puré de papa con gravy, que es una salsa hecha del jugo del pavo; también suele servirse una gran variedad de postres, siendo el pastel de calabaza el más popular.

También es común preparar el pastel de nuez y el de manzana.

Day of the Dead O

ne of the oldest festivals of Mexico, and lived with great joy, is the Day of the Dead - the celebration of All Saints and All Souls on November 1st and 2nd res­pectively.

This tradition has its origins from the prehispanic period, when several Mesoamerican groups used to bury their dead together with some objects, which according to their beliefs, would assist them in their next life: food, clothing, jewelry and weapons. During the Colony, this custom was maintained relatively hidden by indians and mestizos, who began to integrate elements of the Catholic religion their offerings, as images of saints, virgins and Christs.

Also, the offerings were no longer placed in tombs, but inside a room on the floor and table - hence it is called Altar of the Dead.

The elements that make up an altar vary according to the customs and traditions of different regions of the country. However, always present are candles, incense, cempoalxochitl flowers, some fruits, bread, food, beverages, sugar or amaranth skulls and carved china paper.

Each year, the Museo Dolores Olmedo in Mexico City, conti­nuing the style of its founder Doña Dolores Olmedo Patino, celebrates the Day of the Dead and exhibits in its halls a monumental offering. For more than 40 years Doña Lola mounted altars dedicated to Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, and from the opening of the Museum - her legacy to the people of Mexico, the offering has been dedicated to her mother, Mrs. Maria Patiño, and since 2002 the site also celebrates and dedicates the offe­ring to Doña Dolores Olmedo.

Dia de Muertos U

na de las festividades más antiguas de México, y que se vive con gran alegría,es la del Día de Muertos – la celebración de Todos los Santos y Los Fieles Difuntos los días 1° y 2 de noviembre, respectivamente.

Esta tradición tiene sus orígenes desde el perio­do prehispánico, cuando diversos grupos mesoa­mericanos acostumbraban enterrar a sus muertos acompañados de algunos objetos, que según sus creencias, les serían de utilidad en su otra vida: alimentos, ropa, joyas y armas. Durante la Colonia, esta costumbre se mantuvo relativamente oculta por parte de los indí­ genas y mestizos, quienes comenzaron a integrar elementos de la religión católica a sus ofrendas, como imágenes de santos, vírgenes y cristos. Asimismo, las ofrendas ya no se colocaban en las tumbas, sino en el interior de una habitación, sobre el piso y una mesa – de allí que se le llame Altar de Muertos.

Los elementos que componen un altar varían de acuerdo a las costumbres y tradiciones de las diferentes regiones de nuestro país. Sin embargo, siempre están presentes las velas o veladoras, el copal o incienso, las flores de cempoalxóchitl, algunas frutas, pan, alimentos, bebidas, calaveras de azúcar o amaranto y papel picado.

Año con año, el Museo Dolores Olmedo, a la manera de su fundadora Doña Dolores Olmedo Patiño, celebra el Día de Muertos y exhibe en sus salas una ofrenda monumental. Durante más de cuarenta años Doña Lola montó altares dedicados a Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo,y desde la apertura del Museo - su legado al pueblo de México- la ofrenda ha sido dedicada a su madre, la profesora María Patiño, y a partir del 2002 el recinto celebra y dedica su ofrenda también a Doña Dolores Olmedo.

Easy to Make Pumpkin Pie Crust: • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour plus • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour • 2 teaspoons white sugar • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/2 cup canola oil • 2 tablespoons rice milk Filling: • 1/2 cup white sugar • 1/4 cup dark brown sugar • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves • 1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin puree • 2 tablespoons canola oil • 2 large eggs • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 1 1/4 cups rice milk

Pay de Calabaza fácil de preparar

Base: • 1 1/2 taza de especial harina para todo uso • 2 cucharadas de harina normal para todo uso • 2 cucharaditas de azúcar blanca • 1 cucharadita de sal • 1 / 2 taza de aceite de canola • 2 cucharadas de leche de arroz Relleno: • 1/2 taza de azúcar blanca • 1/4 taza de azúcar morena • 2 cucharaditas de canela molida • 1 / 2 cucharadita de sal • 1 / 2 cucharadita de jengibre • 1 / 4 cucharadita de nuez moscada • 1 / 4 cucharadita de clavo molido • 1 lata (15 onzas) de puré de calabaza • 2 cucharadas de aceite de canola • 2 huevos grandes • 1 cucharadita de vainilla • 1 1 / 4 tazas de leche de arroz

Instrucciones: 1. Precaliente el horno a 425 grados F (220 grados C). 2. Mezcle la harina, el azúcar y la sal en un refractario para pay de 9 pulgadas, y hacer un “pozo” en el centro. Vierta la leche, el aceite y el arroz en el pozo, luego mezcle con un tenedor hasta que se forme una masa. Use sus manos para presionar la mezcla uniformemente en el fondo y los lados del refractario. Doble las orillas de la masa del pay. 3. Pour the oil and rice milk into the well, then mix with a fork until a dough forms. Use your hands to press the mixture evenly into the bottom and sides of the pan. Crimp the edge of the crust. 3. Stir together the white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves in a large bowl; set aside. Whisk together the pumpkin puree, oil, eggs, vanilla, and rice milk in a separate bowl until evenly blended. Add the pumpkin mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until fully blended. Pour into the prepared crust and place on a cookie sheet in the preheated oven. 4. Bake for 10 minutes. Reduce temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and bake for 40 to 50 minutes or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. The center may still wiggle a little but will firm up out of the oven. Cool on a metal rack.
