extra classes; learning from an experienced tech is a priceless opportunity. (Look into trade shows—it is the season, after all—and local networking events for hands-on programs.) And in the meantime, we’ve dedicated a portion of this issue of NAILPRO to acrylics. In the following pages you’ll pick up troubleshooting tricks (page 160), tips for selecting the best tools to work with (page 144), and even easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions for recreating your own set of acrylics (page 156). I know; some of you will turn up your nose at this subject matter. Maybe you’re a polish gal and can’t even consider working with an enhancement product. Or perhaps you’re a die-hard gel fan, and only UV is for you. But think about this: Every client’s nail type and lifestyle are different. While some may not respond well to acrylics, others will find that it’s the only product that will suit them. So in order to cater to any client, consider adding acrylics to your service menu. It may take a while to get comfortable working with acrylics, but in a short time, you’ll be happy that you did it.

or some reason, people feel very strongly about acrylic. It’s like cilantro: You either love it or you hate it. Personally, I love it. (And by “it” I mean acrylic, although I also happen to really like cilantro.) I love the way you have to play chemist to make it into a workable substance. I love its versatility, from sculpting to blending. And, I really love that when you want to take it off, you can simply dissolve the product in acetone. I was just thinking back to one of my favorite nail styles that I used to wear, and it was created from acrylic: A natural-looking French with a faded smile line. This technique made the acrylic enhancement look like my very own nails only spruced up with a swipe of high-shine top coat. It’s amazing to me that the same substance that makes a nail look so natural can also create out-of-this-world 3-D sculptures, from flowers to food to fantasy. Unfortunately, the bad rep that is often associated with acrylics stems from technicians who don’t know quite how to work with it or are too aggressive with the rebalance/ removing portion of the service. But as with anything, practice makes perfect, and I highly recommend anyone who is struggling to take some

Drawing Inspiration I received this picture from one of my clients. It was on her seven-year-old daughter’s desk at a parent teacher conference. Melted my heart! Heather Lackey Warsaw, IN Perseverance Pays Off I wanted to share my story as a professional nail technician suffering from nail psoriasis. I am part of only five percent with nail psoriasis with no skin symptoms. I have always found myself trying to hide and disguise my disorder. While most people will suggest just going to a nail salon and having them covered in beautiful acrylic nails, they do not realize the looks and questions that come along with that option. Most salons would take one look at my nails and say they do not know how to apply enhancements to them. Others just ask why I bite them (which I do not!).

FEBRUARY

Struggling through elementary school and part of middle school with other students staring and commenting on my fingernails, I finally decided I was going to try to apply acrylic nails myself. They looked horrible! In fact, they looked worse than if I just walked around with my bare ugly disorder. However, I didn’t give up. I kept trying and practicing, and at age 14, I finally got to the point where I could pull off a decent set of acrylics as long as I just polished over them. I was able to go through high school without anyone knowing I had some crazy disorder. I have hid it from just about everyone—friends, co-workers, classmates, even my fiancé… until now. After finishing nail school and acquiring my license, I can confidently say I have a disorder of my nails and if anyone can help others hide their disorders and feel more confident, either it be nail biting, onychorrhexis, or psoriasis, I’m your nail technician! My clients do not ever need to feel hesitant or embarrassed of their nails. Alyssa Adams Licensed Nail Technician Via email Snakeskin Nail Art I was inspired by the NAILPRO November issue’s “The Look of Luxe” $300 python pedicure. NAILING THE NEWS

by Erin Kuschner

Memorable

Manis THE PRESIDENT HAS BEGUN HIS

SECOND TERM, but it’s the first lady’s commanding manicure that’s still making headlines. TIME magazine named Artistic Nail Design Vogue—the gel hue Michelle Obama wore at the Democratic National Convention—as one of the 100 most memorable objects of the 2012 Presidential Campaign. The elegant dusty gray contrasted her pink dress and sent salons into a frenzy as requests for the gel polish skyrocketed. When the media also commented on Ann Romney’s blue-gray tips at the second presidential debate, it became apparent that noticeable nails were 2012’s hottest accessory—not only among consumers and beauty experts, but also in the realm of politics.

60%

Tricks of the Trade

The numbers are in: 60 percent of our readers get their education from trade shows. And you’re in luck! The NAILPRO Pasadena show, scheduled for April 21, is back by popular demand. Check out nailpropasadena.com for more information. Source: 2012 Essentials survey

WALK OF FAME SOMETIMES CELEBRITIES LET THEIR NAILS DO THE TALKING. On November 10, Cameron Diaz flashed her burgundy mani at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Diaz’s tips were decorated by Michelle Davignon, LCN’s very own director of education, who started with COSMIQ (a light curing resin) to create a medium length extension, then painted a deep wine color with Walk Of Fame polish followed by LCN’s award-winning Polish Seal. Now that’s star quality!

Trade shows and competitions are a wonderful way to further a nail tech’s education, but the costs of travel can often put a damper on the experience. To give her fellow Canadians a chance to compete without trekking to a U.S. show, Michelle Sproat—international nail artist and NAILPRO team cup champion from Inspirations Salon in Kingsville, Ontario—created the Inspirations and Inspiring Nails Academy Canadian Photo Competition. Nail techs from across the country sent in their best holiday-themed designs, and were judged by industry experts Sam Biddle, Catherine Wong and Viv Simmonds.“I know many of the nail techs [in Canada] simply plug away at their daily craft and never even think about what possibilities are literally at their fingertips,” says Sproat. “Through the Canadian Nail Tech Connection, Atlantic Canadian Nail Techs, Vancouver Island NTC … we are slowly gaining more knowledge and I’m very excited to see the changes coming about.” Congratulations to Meg Willey from Brandon, Manitoba (Honorable mention); Angie Gagnon from Dutton, Ontario (3rd place); Andrea Boyko from Medicine Hat, Alberta (2nd place); and Venny Zhrukova from Winnipeg, Manitoba (1st place)!

The Profit of Polish

T

he business world recently received a muchneeded burst of color when FOX Business News interviewed George Schaeffer, founder and CEO of OPI. Schaeffer explained to viewers that the incredible 39 percent rise in U.S. nail polish sales is due in large part to lacquer being “an accessible and affordable luxury in today’s economy. Women want to go to the salon and get away from the problems of the world.” Luckily, the industry shows no signs of slowing: 2012 saw a profit of $1.1 billion, 33 percent of which came from nail salons alone. When asked how OPI differentiated itself in an increasingly competitive market, Schaeffer indicated that “the nail lacquer giant owes much of its success to the quality and intensity of the colors and collections, which are two of the brand’s biggest trademarks.” —Sarah Emick

@ AshleyStaie:

100 Dresses fter joining the Working Wardrobes’ Board of Directors in 2012, Miss Professional Nail president Mike Vo wanted to utilize beauty and fashion as a way to give back. As a result, 100 Dresses was born, a nationwide campaign that supports the Working Wardrobes mission to “Empower men, women and young adults who have faced life crises to re-enter the workforce through job skills and professional wardrobe services.” Through February 22, donors can send in gently used prom dresses and attire to be worn by at-risk high school seniors attending the non-profit’s 2013 Dream Girls and Distinguished Gentlemen Prom; excess dresses will be donated to nearly 800 Marine wives for the Marine Ball. As an incentive, Miss Professional Nail has pledged six bottles of Sation Nail Lacquer to the first 100 donors, while the remaining donors receive three bottles.

“Mike is a powerful voice for corporate social responsibility, as is evident in this amazing national drive Mike is orchestrating,” says Jerri Rosen, founder and CEO of Working Wardrobes. “We are looking forward to an avalanche of dresses from everywhere in the country!” For more information on this fantastic fundraiser, visit workingwardrobes.org.

Eat the colors of the rainbow. It’s easy to identify foods with the highest levels of antioxidants—they’re often the most colorful. Carrots and sweet potatoes have plenty of beta carotene; bell peppers, strawberries and tomatoes contain vitamin C; tomatoes and watermelon have lycopene; and dark leafy greens like spinach, broccoli and kale contain lutein. Blueberries have anthocyanins, while red grapes have reservatol. The bottom line: The more color, the more nutrition!

BEHIND THE NAIL PROS

by Megan James

The Making of Our Cover:

Sugar and Spice M

ulti-talented Viv Simmonds and Catherine Wong worked meticulously side by side for hours to create this month’s ultra feminine Valentine’s Day cover nails. Self-proclaimed “naughty” Simmonds crafted the model’s right hand with frilly sweet-pink details, while Wong designed the racy and roguish left hand. “She should be doing the red nails because she’s naughtier and I’m the sweet one!” Wong exclaimed, laughing. Although the dynamic duo worked against their perceived identities, they are so accustomed to working side-by-side, the creative process is always harmonious. Makeup artist Taylor Babaian and hairstylist Manuel Benevides arrived on set to add their own artistry to the naughty and nice concept. And thanks to photographer Albert Sanchez’s adept style, he was able to capture the often dichotomous nature of women. Overall, the shoot was a fun and successful collaboration of imagination, vision and expertise.

Creating the Cover Nails

Nail Artist Catherine Wong went to school for economics but ended up as a nail artist. Dubbed the Nail Queen, Wong shares her talent through education.

Nail Artist Viv Simmonds hails from Victoria, Australia. She is a salon owner, educator, competition champion and specializes in 3-D nail art.

Once the design was complete, the nails were brushed with a UV top coat and cured.

WORKSHOP

Competition Style:

Salon Success S

alon Success is the most popular category at the NAILPRO competitions. Most first-time competitors choose this category because it seems easier to start with than Sculptured Nails or Nail Art categories. The name implies that it is a salon nail that the judges are looking for—and this is correct; however, it is a perfect salon nail that the judges want to see. These nails must match exactly in length, shape and product distribution. In the salon, all of these minor details are important, but the untrained eye of a client usually won’t notice the inconsistencies; she places more value on a quick and beautiful set. But in competitions, these details are magnified.

Many times, new competitors are disappointed when they receive their score sheets after competing. This is because the differences in a salon nail and a Salon Success nail are quite significant. In the salon, techs must be fairly quick, and they only have their clients—who aren’t looking at structural and technical details—to please. All a client knows is that she doesn’t want to wear nails that break easily; the reasons why her nails don’t break are generally insignificant to her. But NAILPRO Competition judges—who are all previous competition champions—do know why a nail doesn’t break (read: perfect structure); what’s more, they are looking to see if you do—in your competition nails. The second reason for disappointment usually comes from the fact that competitors don’t devote time outside of the salon to practice; they think, “Hey, I do this everyday; I’m practicing.” In reality, a lot of practice aside from clients is needed—like perfecting smile lines. Working towards perfection is what’s required to win any competition. Classic Mully, a fairly new competitor and

94

owner/stylist at The Nail Artist in Gilbert, Arizona, and Reckless Nails in San Francisco, shares, “Competing is one of the absolute best things a nail tech can do for her career. It’s about timing yourself, as you would in a regular salon setting, and creating the very best that you can. The critique you receive [from judges] is priceless and helps you create better sets. Not to mention, coming in the top three feels absolutely amazing!” The Salon Success rules state that competitors have a one and a half hour time limit. Any seasoned competitor will tell you it’s never enough time, while a new competitor that works in a salon 40plus hours per week will say, “Wow, I don’t need that much time!” Azumi Kanene from Azumi Nail in Honolulu, and a top competitor currently placed No. 1 in the running for the 2013 NAILPRO Cup, says: “Competing in Salon Success has helped me with my salon work; I’ve learned to sculpt quality nails quicker for my clients. In this competition, I have to finish in 90 minutes and I always feel like I need 5 more. But hey, it’s competition!”

PROFESSIONAL STARTER KIT

When watching this veteran compete, it’s easy to see that she is serious and very focused. Many new competitors will carry on conversations with their models as though they are actually in a salon setting. A cardinal rule for winning competitions is to focus and keep the talking to a minimum. It’s not only a distraction to you but the other competitors as well. Avid competitor Marina Lopresto from Indulgence Salon in Fort Meyers, Florida, shares, “The Salon Success

competition made me fall in love with the pink-and-white nail style all over again, as well as improve my skills.” This is a common revelation from competitors. The Salon Success competition will only strengthen your self-confidence, and working like a champion nail tech will undoubtedly garner you success in your salon. Once you have the timing and techniques down, then your salon work will begin to look more and more like competition work.

Steps for Salon Success: Use these steps as a guide to creating a perfect set of competition-worthy nails. Then, practice, practice, practice!

Prep and prime nails.

2

Apply forms. Work on one at a time so they don’t shift while you work on the other nails. For the polished hand, mix the white acrylic with a natural shade of acrylic ahead of time so that it still appears white but the line of demarcation from the smile line doesn’t show through the polish. Apply the white acrylic in one ball. There’s no need to really perfect your smile lines on this hand because you’re going to cover them with polish. They just need to look the same as the pink and white hand on the underside.

The Artistic Professional Starter Kit contains all of the necessary tools to jump start your career in Colour Gloss!

PROFESSIONAL FORMULAS PROFESSIONAL RESULTS

Apply the pink acrylic, keeping the enhancement fairly thin and smooth. Once you’ve applied the free edge to the next nail, return to the previous nail and press the C-curve. Remove the form, and then either place a C-curve dowel under the free edge and gently pinch around the stick or you can use a pinching tool. I prefer to use the top surface of my thumbnails to press in on both sides by applying an even amount of pressure right where the white and pink product meet at the smile line. When I use my hands rather than tools, I can feel and see clearly exactly how much pressure I am placing on the nail bed, preventing me from pressing too much which can damage the nails. Apply product and press C-curves until all five nails are finished. Shift to the pinkand-white hand.

2

4

Use two dappen dishes when working with pink-and-white powder, one for the white powder and one for the pink. This keeps the pink from becoming cloudy. Pour only enough liquid in the dish to do one or two nails at a time.

Apply the form. Apply the white product in one ball using a drier consistency. Quickly press the product up into the corners on both sides to create a smile line. To make it really sharp, poke your brush down behind the product at the smile line while swiping. If necessary, place a tiny ball of product up in the corners of the smile line to make them reach all the way up to the sides. Check the points on each side of the of the nail to make sure they are even and that the curvature of the smile line is the same on all five fingers.

Place a small to medium size pink ball of acrylic at the cuticle area. Press it carefully by placing the brush tip between the acrylic and the skin. Lightly stroke it toward the free edge. Keep it very thin near the skin. For new competitors, placing the second ball at the cuticle will help with product control and keep the 8 product from appearing too thick in this area.

7

Place the next medium sized ball behind the smile line. Press it carefully into place and take extra care not to pull the pink product down over the white, as this will cloud the white tip. Once the acrylic begins to set, you can lightly stroke down toward the free edge with your brush to ensure smoothness.

9

File and shape the nails. Use a new 180-grit file for each nail, or at least every other nail. Using new files and buffers on each nail is important for consistency, because the grit of your file changes every time you use it. Remember to always use a filing system: File the tips and sides of all 10 nails, then file and shape the body of the nail. Use the same pressure on each nail while keeping the file parallel to the finger and your wrist straight at all times. Start and stop at the same place on each nail and be sure to cover all surfaces with every file—not just the top of the nail. When filing the cuticle area, bring the product flush with the nail plate without filing it off or filing into the natural nail. Turn the hand around and check your filing from the model’s perspective. Look for any high spots and check the nail from all angles for dips and bumps. The nail should have an even graduate from thinness to thickness to thinness, from cuticle to free edge, and from sidewall to sidewall.

10

Use a finishing stick buffer with a thick foam center to buff all surfaces of the nails.

11

Clean every nail with soap and water to remove any traces of dust.

12

Apply an even layer of base coat to the “polish” hand.

13

Apply one coat of red cream polish. Load the brush with polish and drain one side on the neck of the bottle. You don’t want to accidentally get polish into the cuticle—it’s almost impossible to completely remove it so that the judges won’t notice. Using your pinkie to steady your hand, place the brush about one-eighth inch from the cuticle on the nail plate and carefully push the polish brush up toward the cuticle to create a guide. Then stroke the polish down evenly in single strokes. Pull the skin back at the sidewalls and completely cover the nails.

17

Using a shining block buffer, bring each nail on the non-polished hand to a high shine. Be sure to cover every surface: the sides, cuticles and all edges. As a judge, nothing says newbie like a finished nail that has only been shined on the top surface.

14

18

Clean the nails on the pink-andwhite hand thoroughly. Apply cuticle oil. Twenty-seven-year industry veteran Carla Collier is a working nail tech at Glamour Salon in Tehachapi, CA. Collier is an international educator and competition judge, former salon owner, retired competition champion and NAILPRO cover artist.

14

Apply a second coat of polish in long, even strokes, and don’t dab at the nail. When applying the second coat, lightly brush down over the free edge to completely cover it. Make sure all of the edges are covered but that there isn’t any polish on the undersides of the nails.

15

Dip your acrylic brush in acetone and roll it to a point on your paper towel. Use it to clean up around the cuticle. Doing this will make a perfect margin between the skin and polish. Clean up any polish that may have splashed underneath the nail.

16

Apply top coat. Have your model hold up her hand and rest on her elbow so the polish can dry while you shine the unpolished hand, eliminating any chance of dust getting into the polish.

Tips for Successful Competing:

1 2 3 4 5 6

Utilize your model by having her keep track of your time.

Create a timetable for yourself and practice it. This will help keep stress levels down and will enable you to finish on time. Practice, practice, practice and then when you think you’ve practiced enough—practice some more. Always bring a good lamp, extra bulbs and heating pad. It can be very cold in the competition areas. Cold + Nail Products = Stress Do exactly the same steps on every nail. Start and stop in the same place each time. This will improve consistency, which is the main thing judges look at. Apply the polished hand first. This will warm you up before you start on the pink-and-white hand. The pink-and-white hand is the one looked at most by the judges, with smile lines being the first thing that grabs their attention.

BEAUTY FILE

Jessica Vartoughian Founder & CEO of Jessica Cosmetics and the “First Lady of Nails.” What was your first job ever? After I graduated Hollywood Cosmetology School, I worked at the salon for Robinson’s Department Store in Beverly Hills. If you could be anybody famous past or present, who would you be? Estée Lauder. She made a timeless mark on the beauty industry and paved the way for women entrepreneurs. She was one of the first female immigrants to create the American success story. What was your childhood ambition? Since I was very young, I wanted to be a psychiatrist. I’ve always been fascinated with people and what drives them. Working in the salon gave me the best of all worlds, as I have been a therapist behind the manicure table. What is your proudest accomplishment? I have been very blessed in this life with my children, the ability to embrace wonderful cultures around the world, and for teaching my system to professionals in more than 48 countries. I am also very proud of the eight years when I traveled to the White House [to do nails] during the Reagan administration. What is your favorite type of music? I enjoy many genres of music, but I truly love opera and jazz. I love Andrea Bocelli—listening to his beautiful music soothes the soul. What’s your favorite movie? I love Dr. Zhivago; it’s epic in its beauty and romance.

What was your most recent impulse buy? I was scheduled to do seminars in Russia and Siberia and purchased a faux fur wrap. I can’t discuss nails without … talking about filing and polishing. The art of filing and beautifully applying polish to the natural nail has been lost. 108

SAVVY SALON

Asha SalonSpa K

nown for its tranquil environment and attentive staff, Asha SalonSpa (an Aveda Lifestyle SalonSpa) has taken over the Chicago beauty scene with its two downtown hotel spas and a collection of six full salon/spas—including its largest (and original) location in Schaumburg and its flagship location in Lombard. Residents are showing their love for this popular salon: Asha won second place in the 2012 “Best of the West Suburbs” poll in West Suburban Living magazine. Co-owners Marc Bortz and Kathleen Bucci Bergeron both gained extensive management experience running nightclubs earlier in their careers and have effectively transferred their skills to the salon/spa industry, providing a real customer experience in the light of day.

5 Reasons

Why We Think It’s Fabulous The entire company is dedicated to nurturing the body, mind and soul through its PureDevotion philosophy. From the time clients make their first contact on the phone or at the reception desk, it’s clear that this place is something special. Every client is offered a neck warmer and cup of tea upon arrival, and the pampering and personalized attention continues until that client exits the building. It’s affordable luxury at its finest.

2

It knows what’s in a name.

The word “Asha” is Sanskrit for “life,” and this salon and spa has an environment that truly lives up to the promise of its name. The design is very Zen-like

and natural, having been inspired by the salon’s mission, “Beauty, Tranquility, Life.” Stunning stones and tile mosaics cover the walls, and all of the fixtures embody beauty and function. Recognizable branding is achieved not only through a standardized style at all the locations but also by virtue of a meaningful name.

Instead of seeming like an afterthought, the manicure/pedicure area at Asha SalonSpa is at one with the rest of the place and an extension of the overall theme; it has just as much value as the other service stations. Every nail station is identical, and there are no personal effects in sight other than business cards. It’s clean and simple.

It’s one thing for a company to encourage its employees to take regular classes to keep their skills current; it’s another for a company to offer complimentary training in a wide variety of skills on a regular (sometimes weekly, depending on the offering) basis. A staff that is—as a whole—on the cutting edge of techniques and product

High levels of morale abound.

Asha rewards its employees (and raises morale in the process) by offering some benefits that are hard to find in an average salon or spa. Health insurance is standard for full-time employees, and every month the staff gets pumped up to go above and beyond because of the regular bonus incentives offered. Contests that revolve around things like retail and retention keep the staff on their toes and motivated to do their best work. An added bonus that is created by happy employees? Happy clients.

Ultimately, it’s not just a name; it’s the service, education and professionalism behind the title as well. Those are the things in which consumers learn to trust and see value. A Manicurist’s Manifesto Sheila Fredriksen, CEO, Nontoxique, Minneapolis My license c clearly s states m manicuris and ist, tha what that’s my practice has always been. I have not— since school— touched things that nail techs work with: anything artificial, enhancements or decorative embellishments. In fact, a few states are looking at two-level licensing because they’re not the same. For me, it’s especially a big deal because I am very holistic. Having someone read that I am a nail tech contradicts what I practice, what I’m licensed for and what I preach; it does not imply or support the healthy approach to hand and foot care that I am about. There’s a big difference in what manicuring entails (the care of the hands, feet and nails—not just polishing) and what a nail tech does, which is a focus on enhancements. I’ve practiced providing treatments

and products that support achieving, protecting and maintaining good hand, foot and nail health for years. I think [the title of] manicurist needs to be used when it describes what someone like me does. It’s hard to generalize with accuracy what we do when using one generic title. It’s kind of like using the term doctor loosely— what kind of doctor? Manicurist is the truest and best word to use in a general sense, like doctor, because we have manicurists who focus on the nails via nail enhancements, or nail stylists who focus on art in relation to fashion. Then there are manicurists who stay true to the care of the hands and the feet, with the nails being just a component, like the skin. I myself have chosen to focus on overall care with an emphasis on lifestyle and activity (movement), inner health and the relationship with overall hand and foot health. This is how I view some common titles:

Nail Stylist: These manicurists are often focused on fashion trends and accessorizing the nail. They often work on set with

2013

magazines/ movies or aspire to. They love to see their name in print. Anyone [depending on state and circumstances] can be a nail stylist for hire, without a license. Nail tech: These manicurists work primarily with artificial enhancements. They commonly work with purely synthetic-based products. I find that the public perception of nail techs is pretty low. Manicurist: They focus on the hands and feet as a whole and tend to have a better understanding of skin, nails, and how movement impacts hands/ feet. They’re more likely to understand internal links to outward manifestations, and are more informed about appropriate or necessary customized treatments. Ultimately, it’s not just a name; it’s the service, education and professionalism behind the title as well. Those are the things in which consumers learn to trust and see value.

Dedicated Techies Susan Loggins, owner, Sue’s Top 10, Gillett, PA I kknow the n tech/ nail m manicuris ist debate ha has been goin going on forever. I think both are accurate, but I believe we tend to gravitate more toward one term or another based on our own interpretations of what we do. I am licensed in New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia as a nail technician, as stated on my licenses. I’m glad the terminology is a reflection of my interpretation of what I do. It’s amazing how many technical things we do that can relate to a technical job — not to mention our own personal artistic interpretation, which I believe is the one thing all nail professionals share. We are often the precursor to medical treatment for a variety of things; for starters, we have to be aware of diseases and infection control. We also have to have a basic knowledge of chemistry and how our nail products work and react with each other. We are architects.

I feel like the name technician backs the fact that I completed hours of schooling, and had to study and pass a state exam in order for me to be a licensed technician. My job, as a tech, is technical.

We have to have an understanding of how physical dimensions affect the strength and appearance of enhancements. And if you use an E-file, you are like a machinist, choosing the correct bit for the job, what RPMs to use, how much pressure, etc. I could go on and on. But my vote is in for nail technician!

I to totally p prefer tthe nail ttechnici cian title bec because

creating beautiful and durable nails is more technical than artistic, especially today with all of the ways to create images and designs for nails that have nothing to do with having innate artistic ability. First, we are technicians because we have to understand the chemistry of the products we use and the biochemistry of the nails and surrounding skin that we are working on. Second, we are technicians because we have to understand the physics of making a natural

nail or nail enhancement that is durable enough for everyday wear. Third, we are technicians because most of us use computer technology in the form of salon software, iPads or smartphones to run our businesses. Many of us also use computer technology for training (YouTube tutorials), to find inspirational images for nail art and to make our own decals. I feel using the artist title limits all of the things a nail tech is capable of and also does not command the respect from the public that the technician title does (think X-ray tech, vet tech, dental tech, computer

tech). I am proud to be a nail technician of 29 years, even though my license says manicurist. Our slogan at Just Nails has always been “More Than a Manicure,” which was a hard sell 29 years ago but is totally normal now. G. Elizondo, Bling Nails by G (located inside Scandals Salon), Las Vegas My title is G. E Elizondo, nail a artist/technic cian. My m main focus d is design and nails (acrylic and gels), so I make that apparent in my title. I never call myself a manicurist; to me, that term is so limiting and, frankly, I haven’t done a manicure since I was in school!

The Designer Pattie Yankee, international celebrity nail designer, North Babylon, NY I ca call myself a n nail designer. I u use this term ffor myself fo for several reas reasons: I style and design nails for Fashion Week runway shows, collaborating with designers. I design nails around my personal clients’ wardrobes and for their special events, as well as celebrity clients for their particular outfits. And I just prefer to use something a little different than the norm and consider myself a designer of nails!

I think nail stylist and nail designer are both similar terms. Manicurist, in my eyes, refers to an old-school nail technician who focuses on mainly doing natural-nail manicures. Nail artist, to me, means someone that basically focuses on doing nail art. There are many nail artists who are not licensed technicians but are actual artists that paint on nails as their canvas. To me, these are the nail artists. Nail technicians I see as any licensed professional who does nails more as just a job, not as a passion. (Again, just my view!) And nailist refers to Japanese nail artists who apply a lot of 3-D art.

If you specialize in nail art, that doesn’t change your title; you still operate under the same license. If you want to distinguish yourself, do it through customer service or great quality—not fancy titles. The Neutral Corner Jaime Schrabeck, salon owner and licensed manicurist, Precision Nails, Carmel, CA A ttitle starts w with what y your state l license s says, and that what I that’s stop with; going beyond or embellishing that is crossing the line. You’d have to

go back and rewrite laws to change what licensing says, and that doesn’t seem likely. In California, the manicurist license goes way back—the term nail tech wasn’t thought of when they started licensing. In most states, the license says “manicurist;” some state licenses might state “nail tech” or “nail specialist.” I think everyone should advertise accurately—your license is your license—unless you have a special certification, like a doctor would be

board-certified (a recognizable and legitimate way to distinguish yourself). If you specialize in nail art, that doesn’t change your title; you still operate under the same license. If you want to distinguish yourself, do it through customer service or great quality—not fancy titles. If you get a title (like master tech) through a company, the company name needs to be part of that. But, in general, what your state designates as your title is what you should stick with.

he fingernails act as windows to a person’s overall health and can help you determine what is best for your clients in more ways than you think. Generally, healthy nails are smooth, without ridges, dents, discoloration, flaking or brittleness, but they can sometimes exhibit irregularities that are

based on genetics, poor diet or medications. Learning to differentiate between a client’s inherited makeup and more serious issues by examining their nails will help you determine whether a doctor referral is necessary or if the coffee talk should resume in your shop.

Citrus fruits, red peppers and strawberries will boost Vitamin C levels. Biotin: This B vitamin helps strengthen nails and can be found in salmon, bananas, carrots, egg yolks, legumes and cruciferous vegetables. Iron: A deficiency in iron can lead to malformed and spoon-shape nails. To prevent this, eat red meat, eggs, green-leafy vegetables, molasses, whole grains and beets. Zinc: White spots occur on nails when there isn’t sufficient zinc in the diet. Toasted wheat germ, oysters, seeds (especially watermelon, pumpkin and other squash), peanuts and dark chocolate contain high amounts of zinc.

Client has a Poor Diet

Y

ou can tell a lot about a person’s diet and deficiencies just by looking at their nails. Lisa Andrews, a personal nutrition consultant and clinical dietician with the VA Medical Center in Cincinnati, sees a lot of nail issues in her work. “We get so caught up in foods that are convenient and processed that we don’t have a lot of food in our food,” Andrews says. This can lead to malnutrition even in people who aren’t necessarily deprived of food. “Women can have problems because we’re at a higher risk for iron deficiency than men. Pre-menopausal women lose iron during menstruation and don’t always get it back in their diets.” Healthy nails contain a number of essential minerals—including iron—which all contribute to the strength and integrity of the nail. An iron deficiency affects both the appearance and strength of the nail, resulting in irregular ridges on the fingernail that cause the nail to take on a spoon-like appearance. Clients with iron-deficiency also grow abnormally thin and brittle nails that are prone to splitting or breaking. In addition, the nail bed might appear pale or blue in color, further affecting the health of the nail. Vegetarians and vegans should be mindful of their protein intake; a protein deficiency can cause cracking in nails. “Splitting and flakiness can be caused by not getting enough of the right omega fatty acids. If nails are off-color, or overly dry, it could indicate not enough vitamin B12. Luckily, if you know your client well enough to suggest a change in diet, her nails can regain health. You can also treat her to a vitamin-enriched soak as part of her manicure.”

also have a higher rate of protein malnutrition.” Since the biological aging process is linked to increased medication prescribed, often your older clients will be on some type of pharmaceutical regimen, which may result in nail changes. Onycholysis results when the nail plate separates from the nail bed. It will appear as the white tip of the nail extending unnaturally low into the nail bed. It is often a result of trauma to the nail but can also be a side effect of certain medications taken. While it’s not typically dangerous, it does leave an open area under the nail where bacteria and fungus can grow, and it certainly isn’t normal. Keep the area trimmed and clean so that the nail can grow back healthy. Normal aging also affects the growth and development of the nails. The most common changes in the nails for aging adults is slower growth, less shine, increased brittleness and yellowing of the nail. These clients need pampering nail care and lots of moisturizing treatments. If you notice horizontal dents or ridges (possible Beau’s lines) or an infection indicated by symptoms of onycholysis, a doctor referral might be appropriate.

White Spots

Client is Stressed or Harsh on Nails hat about the ubiquitous white spot? White spots can be internal in the nail plate itself, or can be just surface damage. “White spots don’t result from soaking in acetone, as some people believe,” Schoon says. “White spots in the nail plate aren’t usually a sign of trouble. They indicate no nutritional deficiency, no illness, no negative things at all. Instead, they’re probably a sign that some minor damage was done to the skin at the base of the nail plate, and the cells didn’t mature properly when the nail grew out.” As for white spots on the surface of the nail plate, “that indicates forceful damage. Peeling off polish and applying other force can disrupt the surface of the nail plate and create pits, which then create white spots,” says Schoon. Nail damage doesn’t typically result

little nutritional deficiency is one thing, but if the problem escalates, or if a client is failing to care for her nails properly, serious problems can develop. Doug Schoon, author of Nail Structure and Product Chemistry, co-chair of the Nail Manufacturer’s Council, and chief scientist at CND, explains: “Vertical ridges aren’t a problem. That just happens as a sign of aging.” Horizontal ridges across the nail plate, though, can indicate trouble. “These are called Beau’s lines. They’re horizontal dents or ridges that result from a period of slowed growth in the nail plate, or a time when the nail grew thinner for awhile,” Schoon says. While Beau’s lines don’t point to a specific health issue in and of themselves, they do indicate that something caused the nail growth to slow down — age, nutritional deficiency, or even a trauma to the base of the nail itself. Andrews points out, “The elderly tend to have more nail problems than other demographics. Part of that is because they can’t always care for themselves as well as they did when they were younger. [In addition], their prescriptions sometimes contain many antibiotics, which can cause an overgrowth of bacteria. They

a doctor referral is needed. If the skin is just swollen and looks sensitive and nail biting is obvious, you can ask your client how she takes care of her nails and talk to her about healthier habits for her nail care. You may also suggest to your client that she keep her nails trimmed and clean at all times and that weekly manicures until the urge to gnaw disappears is extremely helpful. If your client seems to have a health condition affecting her nails, it’s important to remember that you cannot recommend medical treatments. Even if you’re sure you know exactly what’s going on, you absolutely must recommend that she see her doctor. You can tell her what you think, but diagnosing and prescribing treatments for your clients is against the law, and you could face serious legal trouble. The important thing to remember is that everyone’s nails are different, and it’s your job to care for them and make them beautiful.

ISCOUNTS, PROMOTIONS AND AN ACTIVE MARKETING CAMPAIGN WILL DRIVE CLIENTS TO YOUR DOOR, BUT A WORN AND DATED INTERIOR WILL MAKE SOME CLIENTS REGRET STEPPING FOOT INSIDE. If you’re looking to impress your clients with a trendy remodel, make like a boutique hotel and transform your salon into a one of a kind space. Michele Pelafas, licensed interior designer and principal at Michele Pelafas Inc., sees the boutique hotel trend extending to salons; interiors are customized, unique and detail-oriented. “Owners are starting to focus on creating an interior that is more personal and more indigenous to their neighborhoods and towns,” Pelafas explains. A salon in New York City will look very different from one in Boise, as well it should; the space should reflect the people who use it. Before you plan any renovation, study your clients and take your design cues from what they like. If the majority of your clients ask for exclusive nail art designs, be bold with your salon design by choosing bright colors, sleek surfaces and geometric patterns. If your neighborhood is filled with antique shops, follow the trend by decorating your salon with warm neutrals, luxurious textures and antique furniture. Since many clients use the salon as an escape from their hectic lives, your space should be relaxing, not cold with a poor design or lack of character. According to Dieter Cartwright and Jonathan McElroy, principals at Warren Red design firm, salon design in 2013 and beyond will move away from clinical or commercial looks and instead embrace comfortable, residential styles. Try replacing built-in surfaces, like the receptionist’s desk, with freestanding furniture. Artwork, whether oil paintings or blackand-white prints, will add warmth to any space. Even traditional utilitarian fixtures, like pedicure benches, are being redesigned for comfort. Pelafas notes, “There is a definite trend towards built-in pedicure benches that are comfortable, luxurious and fashion-forward. They include fabrics that are more plush and touchable.”

“Owners are starting to focus on creating an interior that is more personal and more indigenous to their neighborhoods and towns.”

Seeing is Believing THE MOST IMPORTANT RENOVATION TO YOUR SALON ISN’T THE PAINT COLOR OR PEDICURE BENCHES BUT THE LIGHTING, WHICH TRANSFORMS EVEN THE DARKEST OF SALONS INTO BRIGHT, WELCOMING SPACES. A well-lit salon shows off the nail artists’ work, draws attention to merchandise and adds character and individuality to a space. Ceiling lights provide a general light source, but different lighting throughout will showcase your salon. When working on a salon project, Pelafas specifies pendants, sconces or chandeliers to add warmth and interest, along with task lighting to illuminate work surfaces. To increase sales, the retail area deserves a spotlight all its own: “Track lighting with halogen bulbs and adjustable heads is very suitable for product and polish displays. It will add flexibility and sparkle, and draw attention to the merchandise.” The type of bulb you use is just as important as the placement of the lights themselves. Some bulbs have a cool color temperature, which is too harsh for a salon environment; it will alter the colors of nail polish and your clients’ skin tones. Look for bulbs labeled “warm white” with a color temperature between 3,200 and 3,500 Kelvins. Fluorescent and light emitting diode (LED) lighting might cost more at the outset but will save you money in the long term. LED energy efficient, long-lasting bulbs save on operating and replacement costs.

Replacing lightbulbs might be an affordable way to transform your salon, but for more impact, a thorough makeover doesn’t have to cost your life savings. The key to renovating on a budget is to spend only what you need. “Take a good look at what you have in place,” suggests Chuck Taylor, director of operations for Englewood Construction, “and determine what, if anything, can be repurposed. For example, can any of your stations be resurfaced or remodeled to look new?” Salons rarely need to be gutted; functional, attractive fixtures often hide in plain sight. If cabinets look dated, replace only the doors and keep the cabinet interiors. Instead of using a jackhammer on a tired tile floor, transform it by applying a new color of grout. Repurposing your existing furniture and fixtures saves money by lowering the cost of materials needed and by getting your salon back to full working order that much sooner.

If your salon is in need of a major renovation, put down the sledgehammer and pick up some paper and a pencil. Planning your renovation project ahead of time is the only way to save your finances and your sanity. First, make a list of all the work you want completed, from the large jobs to the small. Next, figure out how much you are willing to spend on updates. Your plan, says Taylor, will “ensure that you know all of your costs going into the

Hand & Foot Spa project.” When budgeting, set aside a contingency fund. Unforeseen problems often lurk behind walls and under floors, and you’ll need emergency cash to make unexpected, necessary repairs. During renovations, budgets can go awry. To keep yours in check, reduce the expensive labor costs of plumbers and electricians by keeping the walls, electrical outlets and plumbing intact and by maintaining the overall layout of your salon. Being decisive also saves money: picking your flooring and wall color early on in the project gives your contractor time to order materials. In addition, having all the construction materials on site is essential for work to continue at a steady pace. “There is nothing worse when trying to control costs,” says Taylor, “than having to start and stop a project.” Top of the line finishes also put budgets in the red. Fortunately, cheaper options no longer look, well, cheap. Some porcelain tiles mimic the look of marble, vinyl floors are often mistaken for wood, and faux stone is almost a match for the real thing. Using the more affordable option won’t make any difference to the overall design of your salon, but it will save your budget. If nothing but the higher priced option will do, consider scaling down the application. For instance, instead of hanging wallpaper in the entire salon, buy a single roll and use it on a focal wall. Keep the expensive finishes where they’ll make the most impact—cladding the front entrance walls or highlighting an architectural feature.

“Take a good look at what you have in place, and determine what, if anything, can be repurposed. For example, can any of your stations be resurfaced or remodeled to look new?”

With so much money going out, you’ll need money coming in to balance the books. Instead of shuttering your salon’s doors during construction, renovate during your off hours. Provide your contractor with a schedule that lists operating hours, days that you are closed for business, and your peak hours. “Having this timeline,” says Sam Cicero of Cicero’s Development, “will enable the construction team to schedule the work during times when it is not disruptive to your clients. Just remember that contractors do not perform well during very late or early hours, say before 6 a.m. or after 10 p.m.” Depending on your salon’s hours, you might have to make some concessions. Closing for the morning and booking all appointments in the evening will give tradespeople the window they need to complete their work. Make sure you allot one hour for cleanup, so your salon won’t look like a construction zone when you open. So how long will your clients be seeing the “Please excuse the renovation” sign? The answer varies for every salon, but by Taylor’s estimates, a properly planned remodel of a 1,000-square-feet salon could be completed in two to three weeks. Some jobs take

Body & Soul

Contractors

101 longer than others. Workers can paint salon walls in just two to three days, while installing wallpaper could take a week or longer. A light can be swapped out in an hour, but a more complicated job like tiling a floor requires up to three weeks. Work with your contractor to develop a realistic timeline, and tell your clients when construction will be completed so they can save the date for the grand re-opening. Once the renovation is complete, open your salon doors and show off the new space. Cicero advocates for a launch party: “Have giveaways, such as gift cards and discounts, for vendors and contractors who participated in your renovation to gain new customers and cross-promote your business.” Advertise your newly-renovated salon in local newspapers, on your website, and through social media to build interest and get potential clients in the front door. Every client who walks into the new space will be glad they stepped foot inside.

CONTRACTORS ARE TRAINED TO ANTICIPATE AND OVERCOME PROBLEMS, BUT NOT ALL OF THEM ARE CREATED EQUAL. Just as you wouldn’t trust an inexperienced nail technician with your clients, you shouldn’t hand a fledgling workman the keys to your salon. Meet with a few contractors to get their estimates and ask about their specialization, whether they carry liability insurance, and how they plan to clear construction debris when they’re finished. Make sure to get references and check them either by phone or in person. And always sign a contract; if something goes wrong, a legally binding contract could save your business from financial ruin.

nvesting in salon equipment can be an expensive endeavor, whether you need a truckload of pieces or simply an item or two. If money were no object, most people would prefer brand new equipment. Unfortunately, the reality is that not everyone can afford to buy new, so a little bit of

creativity is in order. Repurposing used salon furniture can be a good solution for a tight budget, but let the buyer beware! Experienced shoppers explain the pros and cons, what to look for, and whether the financial savings are worth it in the long run when purchasing used equipment.

PRIME IT!

Good and Bad PRIMETIME Ensures nail lacquer adhesion by prepping and priming nails for maximum lacquer wearability.

Depending on who is selling the equipment and why, deep discounts can usually be found. Xiomara Hernandez, owner of Lux Royale Mobile Nail Spa in Chicago, drove an hour to check out some pre-owned items for her salon and was not disappointed. “I purchased a manicure table, two pedicure stools, a portable foot stool and three wall shelves, all for $95. This is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.” Used fittings can also be a temporary fix until your budget can handle what you really want. Chardean Dorst, owner of Paradise Hair & Nail Salon in Fort Pierce, Florida, encourages opening a salon with pre-owned equipment. “New equipment is very expensive. You can start up a salon for very little money if you shop properly and don’t buy just any junk someone has for sale. You want to make sure it will last for a while.” Dorst purchased used chairs for $50 each and they have lasted for three years—and counting! Unfortunately, the potential cons can outweigh the pros on this topic. When it comes to used equipment, the condition of the item isn’t “as good as new” unless it was brand new when put into storage and is just seeing the light of day when potential second owners come to take a look. There is usually no active warranty that can be used in the event that something breaks, and it is difficult to predict how long the piece will last, especially if its actual age isn’t clear. The best description for used furnishings is “gently used,” with a fine line between used furnishings that are in “good condition” and used furnishings that are in “poor condition.” Shoddy equipment can give your clients pause about a return visit to your salon, so make sure the selling condition of the piece you’re considering is accurate. Another point to consider: Bigger items require a moving truck or van, and if you’re driving a sedan, you’ll most likely have to incorporate delivery fees into the total before you can decide if you’re getting a bargain. Jill Kasper, owner of Beauty 101 in Hopkins, Minnesota, believes that not knowing how well the used piece was sanitized while in use is a huge disadvantage. “You are really taking a chance with used equipment. I chose not to purchase a used pedicure tub because it had rust in it. In this industry you have to be very careful about sanitation and disinfection. I chose to buy brand new [in that case].” The savings on a used pedicure tub will be inconsequential if safety and sanitation problems come into play with clients. The availability of used equipment depends on a variety of factors. Close proximity to a major metropolitan area means that there is a higher potential for finding pre-owned furnishings, but also that there are more people looking for the same thing you are. Hernandez suggests starting with the local newspaper classified ads, Craigslist or even Facebook. “You may find salon equipment that has been repossessed (or has been put on the market as a result of salon closure). Even though it sounds a bit cruel, some of this type of equipment is often still in great shape.” A simple Internet search brings up lots of websites selling used equipment, but ordering it based on a photograph is extremely risky. Shipping costs can be a detriment to savings, Dorst says. “Sometimes they charge extra to ship to a residence—we bought stuff before we opened and stored it at my house—and there may be hidden charges.” You should make yourself aware of the return policies (if they exist) that these websites may have.

WHEN PURCHASING USED SALON FURNITURE LIKE TABLES, CHAIRS AND PEDICURE TUBS, THE CLEAR ADVANTAGE IS THE COST.

BOND IT!

What To Look For

J

ill Kasper, owner of Beauty 101 in Hopkins, Minnesota, believes that thorough research is the best strategy when making a used purchase of any kind. “Research the quality of the brand that you are looking for and when you locate a specific piece of equipment, look at the moving parts to see if it is fully functional. Make sure all of the pieces are there and ask if it’s being sold ‘as is’ or if the seller will buy it back or repair it if it doesn’t work.” Checking in advance to see if the equipment has been recalled by the company is an important element of pre-purchase research, especially since most recalls have to do with a safety element. (Generally, if the previous owner took care of the recall by getting a part replaced, it would no longer be a concern.) Xiomara Hernandez, owner of Lux Royale Mobile Nail Salon in Chicago, says that attention to detail is imperative when shopping. “Make sure that all of the mechanisms, nooks, crannies, nuts, bolts and electrical parts are in working condition. If the item you’re interested in has hydraulics (common in chairs), make sure you test them carefully. Test electrical items and let them run for 15 to 30 minutes before you turn them off. This is important because some of the electrical components may initially work but overheat and fail after a duration of time.” She adds that a friend once purchased a pedicure chair that she thought looked good aesthetically but didn’t think to turn on. When it was connected in her salon, it didn’t work and the cost to repair it rivaled the cost of a new chair. “You should always check used equipment, no matter how big or small!” Hernandez emphasizes. Shannon Chomanczuk, owner of A Polished Image in New Windsor, New York, recommends doing heavy research on cost for a reason that might be surprising. “Make sure that the price being asked for the used item is less than the current retail price. I have seen bidding on eBay for used items go well beyond the sale price for the same items new.” Hernandez warns about the other end of the spectrum. “If you see a price that seems too good to be true, make sure you inquire about its defects or prior malfunctioning.” Don’t discount the value of the seller herself as a great resource for information on the history and usage of the items you’re considering purchasing. Great questions to ask include:

1 2 3 4 5 6

BONDER Unique rubberized basecoat, grips lacquer to nails for longer lasting wear.

Are you the original owner of this equipment? When did you purchase it, and from whom? Have you had to make any repairs or replace parts? Do you still have the original manual and/or warranty? Would you rate the level of usage on this equipment as light or heavy? Why are you replacing this equipment?

It occurred to Chomanczuk to ask one last question that resulted in an even bigger savings on her purchase: “I asked for a discount for picking up the items myself that same day and because I was buying so many things. (The buyer agreed.) I was so happy I asked!” Negotiating an even lower price, a trade, or other miscellaneous conditions of a sale can make the experience even more valuable, and the possibilities are endless. Don’t assume that the listed price is rock bottom; you never know what the motivation is for selling, and the seller just might be waiting for a good suggestion. Kathy Dent and Danielle Lindberg, co-owners of Salon Glow in Reno, Nevada, offer some food for thought: “When you are buying something that you don’t have experience with, get input from the people who will be using it. For example, we own a full-service salon but we do nails. When we moved, we bought new shampoo chairs but they were awkward for older clients. (It was) something we didn’t realize because we don’t do hair.” Conducting a search beyond salons can present some great options, too. “We got a great display cabinet and purse display rack from a gift shop that was closing.”

Proper Prep

Make acrylics last by taking time to prepare the nail.

W

e’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: The most important step in a quality service is preparation. And when it comes to acrylics, the right preparation means the difference between a perfect set and an angry customer. Clean cuticles (don’t forget to have your client wash her hands!), proper shape and a buffed nail plate are the building blocks to successful adhesion, whether you’re new at acrylics or a seasoned pro. Hear from industry experts on why prep should be your number one priority.

Preparation before applying acrylics is important for sanitary reasons because there is a possibility that the nail can become infected with mold and bacteria. You will also be temporarily dehydrating the nail bed in order for the product to appear much better as well as make your acrylics last longer. —CHRISTINE LE, founder, Christrio

If you have the perfect consistency, application or filing technique… that all goes out the window with a bad prep procedure. Artificial nail products do not like skin. Oh Lรก Lรก Follow these instructions from Star Nail International to create high-fashion French nails. TECH TIP: Wipe the brush on a paper towel before dipping in the liquid again to prevent contamination of the liquid. Work the ball from side to side, making sure to cover the natural nail by stroking out.

Apply primer (with a primer pen or primer brush). Allow it to dry.

2

Apply a ball of white powder to the free edge with the belly of the brush. Pat, form and work the powder into the desired shape.

acrylic brush. Caring for your acrylic brush starts from the moment you take it out of its package. Next would be getting it ready each day before you use it, cleaning it between applications and storing it properly.” To gain control of the product, you often have to move beyond precise measurements and focus more on how the product feels, moves and performs. “I don’t believe in liquid-to-powder ratios,” says Gregory Salo, president of Young Nails in Anaheim, California. “I believe in the look and feel of the product when picked up. If it is too dry or wet, it’s hard to control. Those who struggle [with product ratio] usually have issues with the cuticle area.” Once you get to the point where application is second nature, acrylics can be a very lucrative part of your business. “Acrylics have always been an intricate part of nail services in the salon,” says Nadine T. Galli, education/training manager at American International Industries in Los Angeles. “For those of us who are hard on our hands and like length, you can’t beat the wearablity of sculptured nails. The competition arena is another place where acrylic shines; it allows us to express our creative talent in unsurpassed ways.” Acrylic enhancements are a staple salon menu item, so don’t skip this offering because you’ve had a bad experience or aren’t comfortable using the product. “When you’re just starting in school (or maybe later in your professional career), acrylics are such a foreign application,” says Elaine Watson, vice president of marketing and global education director for Star Nail International in Valencia, California. “Those first few sets of nails you do tend to be scary. But as you really become ‘one’ with the product and more comfortable with the setup time and the technique, you really have no problem from there. You just have to get over the learning hump. Master the application, then it’s all downhill from there.” Mastering the application can be a challenge, as some new techs struggle with product control. “This would be getting the right amount of liquid along with the right amount of powder together,” says Rachel Mouritsen, NAILPRO Cup champion and veteran nail tech at Nail Trends by Rachel Mouritsen in Clovis, California. “Another factor in getting the ratio correct has so much to do with not only using the correct brush for the job, but also taking proper care of the

Everything in my life has brought me to this point right here, creating hundreds of colors. Funny how things work out the way they do. My very first word was “pretty” and by the time I hit high school I was really beginning to understand the power of color in a way my peers didn’t. It makes a statement, it inspires, it invites. Color doesn’t wear a watch or look at a calendar; sometimes I’ll create a color and hold off a year or two to release it, waiting for its time to shine. Lexy might end up being a little better at color because she was raised in so much of it. But her first word was “doggie.” I don’t know quite how to explain that one.

Lifting

CAUSE: Poor preparation of the natural nail, improper liquid-to-powder ratio and not following instructions from the manufacturer. SOLUTION: To properly prep natural nails, gently push back cuticles and remove the remaining excess dead tissue. Lifting can easily result from not removing all of the dead tissue. Mouritsen adds that techs should avoid over etching the nail plate or over applying primer. Ensure that your liquid-to-powder ratio is the right consistency, because working too wet or even too dry can cause lifting. “This is more of the whole nail popping off [situation],” Watson says. Use each brand as instructed; this will give you the best chance at avoiding product lifting. “Manufacturers spend hundreds and thousands of dollars to formulate products to work together and give you ‘perfect’ performance,” says Galli. Don’t play chemist by mixing and matching products. You’ll end up with a different product and, ultimately, possible lifting.

PROBLEM: Picking

up the Right Amount of Product

CAUSE: Brush does not have the proper amount of liquid. SOLUTION: Start off with more liquid to help you pick up the ball more easily. “Instead of swiping off too much liquid, lightly tap the brush on one side of the dampen dish,” says Salo. “Pick up the pearl by lightly stroking the tip of the brush on the surface instead of dragging the brush. Make sure the tip of the brush is flattened so you pick it up with one side. If the pearl is too wet, use the opposite side of the brush (not holding the pearl) on a towel to remove excess liquid. The longer you hold it, the more liquid it drains out. I usually hold it for just a second.”

164

NAILPRO

FEBRUARY

2013

PROBLEM: Bubbles

in the Finished Product

CAUSE: Applying product too dry, too wet or overworking the product with your brush. SOLUTION: At the start of curing, the product is so thin and wet that it’s easy to trap little bubbles. Pay close attention to the application with your brush. “Try not to pat it like you’re dribbling a basketball in the NBA playoffs,” says Watson. “Slow down and lightly press and brush. This will prevent bubbles.” Master product control and allow the product to level out before moving it around too much. “It will also help if you release the air from your brush when you dip it into your monomer,” says Mouritsen.

PROBLEM: Cracking

CAUSE: Improper nail structure or sidewalls need to be reinforced. SOLUTION: Cracks are a nightmare for any nail tech starting out. Steer clear of them by reinforcing the arch location with your stress ball—and be sure to cover the sidewalls, says Mouritsen. PHOTOS: ARMANDO SANCHEZ

PROBLEM:

nailpro.com/freeinfo • Use FreeInfo #52

Around the Cuticle

CAUSE: Pushing the product into the cuticle area instead of using the tip of the brush as a barrier between the cuticle area and acrylic. SOLUTION: Many novice techs tend to push the product into the cuticle area. Instead, make sure to press the product with the brush behind the acrylic. “You should be able to press it flush around the cuticle area without touching the skin,” Salo says. “This will allow you to file it flush to the natural nail. You will not be able to feel any edges around the cuticle area when finished properly. This will also allow you to file it into shape in the least amount of time.”

PROBLEM: Poor

Maintenance

CAUSE: Improper fills or backfills. SOLUTION: Unfortunately, many nail techs don’t know how to remove fill lines or rebalance smile lines. “You do not pry away lifted areas or force the enhancement off of the natural nail to rebalance the enhancement,” Salo says. “Limiting yourself to hand files and acetone to rebalance will wear your hands, shoulders and back. Every nail tech needs to learn how to use an E-file properly. Learning how to do it correctly will protect your most important asset: your body. E-files do not do damage; nail techs without the right training do.”

166

NAILPRO

FEBRUARY

2013

PROBLEM: Misshaped

C-curve

CAUSE: Using the wrong form and applying forms improperly. SOLUTION: Practice makes perfect when achieving a perfect C-curve. Galli explains how to get it right: “Bring the natural nail down to onethirty-second of an inch or less at the free edge; the shorter the free edge, the better chance of getting a proper fix of the nail form. Use the tabs at the front of the form to secure a proper C-curve. Forms usually have a rounded side and a flat side at the point where the form matches the free edge. Choose the side that’s closest to the free-edge shape. Applying the center cutout to the bottom side of the form at the free edge will give added strength and support during sculpting.”

PROBLEM: Headaches

and Physical Discomfort

CAUSE: Stress from performing enhancement services. SOLUTION: According to Galli, poor posture is the No. 1 cause of pain and discomfort from doing nails. “Most techs work hunched over, in the wrong chair, with bad lighting,” she says. “If you’re working hunched over and straining to see, you’ll have a headache caused from eyestrain and lack of oxygen. Your lungs don’t fill up with air if you’re working hunched over. It’s so important to sit up straight, have a comfortable chair, proper lighting and proper ventilation. Pay attention to how you’re working. Make the adjustments to work healthy, whatever services you offer in the salon.”

A Medical Profession Find out if becoming a medical nail tech is the right option for you.

W

ith the growing elderly population and diseases such as diabetes on the rise, performing safe nail services is now more important than ever. Some nail techs have found that their basic education didn’t teach them the ins and outs of providing safe services for geriatric or chronically ill clients in a salon or medical setting, and that becoming a medical nail tech might allow for enhanced marketing and service quality. A medical nail tech does not do anything outside the regular scope of practice, however; she still works cosmetically, whether in a salon or medical setting, and the medical nail technician certificate isn’t officially recognized by any state. But for some, this option expands their overall career opportunities in the nail industry. Read on to find out if this path could be right for you.

The Program Medical Facts* • An estimated 285 million people worldwide had diabetes in 2010. • A 2010 CDC study projected that as many as one in three U.S. adults could have diabetes by 2050 if current trends continue. • In 2005, 133 million Americans—almost 1 out of every 2 adults—had at least one chronic illness. • The rise in the incidence of type 2 diabetes is associated with obesity, decreased physical activity and the aging U.S. population. • Women are more likely than men of the same age to have one or more physical limitations. *Sources: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (cdc.gov)

The MediNail Learning Center in Signal Mountain, Tennessee, founded by Dr. Robert Spalding in January 2009, certifies licensed nail techs as Advanced Nail Techs (ANTs) and as Medical Nail Techs (MNTs). Three courses offer instruction on the dermatology and biomechanics of feet, and how to deal with crises in the salon. “Dr. Spalding started the program because he didn’t like seeing salons causing infections,” recounts Janet McCormick, a 30-plus years veteran nail tech and MediNail vice president of education. “He wanted to educate techs because he believes techs are very important.” Veteran nail professional Athena Elliott became the first technician to be certified, and she encouraged Spalding to expand. Indeed, the program is still evolving, as new material is regularly added for current and past students. Today, the eight-module ANT program offers information on how to safely perform pedicures and how to set your salon

apart through better practices. The MNT program, with 10 modules, is designed for those who want to work as a nail tech in a podiatry office or as a clinical podiatric medical assistant, but also offers business-boosting tips and safe sterilization practices for salon-based techs (for example, how to view new client health sheets and ask the proper questions, or how to use an autoclave properly). A tech must complete the ANT course before the MNT course. Because the programs are based online, students can work and complete exams at their own pace. However, before the student can become a certified MNT, she must complete a 40-hour internship with a local podiatrist, completing a skill log of items before certification. This allows techs to experience the ins and outs of working in a medical setting and helps them decide if they’d prefer a salon environment. “Some do the ANT only, or do the MNT and stay in the salon,” says McCormick. “Some take to working for podiatrists,

Two Tales I was an outside sales rep for a construction company, and when the economy took a downturn, I had to find something else to do right away. I chose nails, but I didn’t want to be like every other tech. I worked in a salon for a few months and then met Janet McCormick and Dr. Spalding at a show. I decided right away to take classes, and it’s the best thing I ever did. Four years ago, I went from being a learning tech with no previous experience to doing nails with a full book and a three-week wait for appointments with me! It was a complete eye-opener; despite the economy, I have an abundance of clients I would’ve never thought possible. I get referrals from podiatrists’ offices, and that helps things along, but I also get a ton of word-of-mouth business for my sanitation practices and sterile instruments. I have a 98% rebooking rate at the time of service, and I’m able to charge more than anyone else in my area. I was even able to buy my own day spa. And learning about abnormalities and diseases was so intriguing—it has created an additional passion for me. As a new tech, it catapulted my career and has been my way of creating a truly loyal clientele. —Claudia Cox, owner, Back in Touch Wellness Spa, Sebring, FL I’ve been in the business since 1985 and completed a course from the North American School of Pedicuring, which mentioned the MediNail program. I completed the program because of the changing industry and the amount of fungus and infections out there; I wanted to do everything I could to make services germ-free and clean for each client. I have an upscale clientele, as well as clients who might be diabetic or cancer survivors or are taking blood thinners. When I did my internship, some doctors were hesitant: “You’re just a nail tech, what do you know?” But I know a lot! As a tech, you want the client to feel good, and they feel better when they’re safe and don’t have to worry. I’m selfemployed, and I get most clients through word-of-mouth because marketing isn’t my forte. I’d like to take referrals or work for a podiatrist at some point, and I’d love to train others on providing better services. This is definitely an investment. The course costs money, an autoclave is expensive, and I have to have enough tools so that I can sterilize all I’ll need for the day. But you can charge more, too. I think the market hasn’t yet been fully tapped—there are more opportunities with men, children and even athletic/sports services. —Monica Cherry, owner, Monica’s, Westport, CT

2013

and some say, ‘Working in a podiatrist’s office is not for me.’” However, the internship can lead to later referrals and—most importantly— cements the information learned in the course. Note that this program does not grant a license; it is simply a specialty certification that may allow techs to work more comfortably in a podiatrist’s office or obtain referrals from the local medical community. “Graduates are trained to work on people with medical conditions, but they’re still doing cosmetic pedicures; they’re not working outside their scope of practice,” stresses McCormick. “They’re simply working in a more advanced way.” Therefore, if a podiatrist decides to hire the tech as a CPMA, she doesn’t work outside her scope of practice. For techs in the salon, they’re well-equipped to spot abnormal conditions and know when to send a client to a podiatrist.

Challenges and Opportunities Though there are many benefits of the ANT and MNT programs, there may be challenges as well. The internship at the end of the MNT program requires the tech to find a podiatrist in her area, which can be difficult in small towns. However, McCormick advises techs to take a MediNail presentation to all podiatrists in her area to see where they might best fit in, and to familiarize them with the certification for later referrals. Of course, the medical setting itself may turn off some techs (for example, those who may be uncomfortable seeing

blood). McCormick adds that working in a salon with fellow nail techs who don’t follow the same practices may be tricky. For example, when a tech has to explain why she wears gloves while another does not. And, of course, the program requires time and financial investment: The ANT modules and marketing materials are $229, and the combined ANT and MNT courses are $549, plus the purchase of a textbook. “It’s not cheap, but this is a career change, so we want people to be committed,” explains McCormick. When deciding if the ANT and/or MNT program is right for you, don’t hesitate to reach out to past graduates and ask questions. Think about what you want to get from the courses. You might even chat with local podiatrists to gauge interest. Most who enroll in the program are “mature nail techs who love helping people look better but are ready to move to another level and find a way to help,” says McCormick. “Nail techs need more options within the salon, need more confidence, and have to want to bring in more clients. This course is just as much about marketing as safety.” Clients are always appreciative of nail techs’ inherently caring nature—especially ill or compromised clients who are hesitant to get nail services. “Nail techs are good at this because they’re nail techs,” says McCormick. “This is a totally different world and when you have more respect for your clients, those clients never leave!” Tracy Morin is a freelance writer and editor based in Oxford, MS.

HOLLYWOOD FILE

by Karie L. Frost

Tip Off:

The EMAs vs. the AMAs

W

ho went harder with their nails: the ladies of the MTV Europe Music Awards or the gals of the American Music Awards? From long and gilded to high-contrast accents, one thing is for sure: The women of music have mastered the art of the mega-haute mani.

The 2012 MTV EMAs

The 40th Anniversary AMAs

Heidi Klum: npo_

Rita Ora: This edgy songstress enlisted manicurist Sophy Robson to sketch red brocade nails to match her Marchesa gown.

She’s no bubblegum kind of gal, but her digits say otherwise with this sweet pink polish job and floral accent nail.

Carly Rae Jepsen: This hit-making newbie sported some seriously sequined nails for her Best New Artist win.

Ke$ha: The pop star had her nails dipped in diamondinfused polish, courtesy of manicurist Kimmie Kyees and Red Carpet Manicure’s Set in Stone.

Gwen Stefani: No Doubt’s leading lady went back to black glitter with a white accent nail.
