18 Reasons Why I Love Pedicures s some of you know, I recently had knee surgery thanks to a fluke ski accident. On the eve of that surgery, I scheduled a pedicure. There was no way I was going in for surgery and then succumbing to weeks of recovery with untamed toes. Besides, I knew it was going to be a while before I would be able to get down there myself. I also made sure to get a pedicure before that ski trip, as it was New Year’s Eve and I needed festive toes once I took my boots off—and good thing I did. Little did I know how much I would be seeing my toes that weekend! Before any major—and minor—event, I always get a pedicure. And then, of course, in the spring and summer I’m a regular two to three week salon visitor for a good sloughing and polishing. The reason? Because pedicures just make you feel so darn good. On the one hand, they are like a finishing touch. How can you be completely put together when you’re standing on gnarly feet? And on the other, pedicures are pampering at its finest. You get to slump down in an oversized comfy chair with your feet up. (Let’s be honest: For some of us, just that is enough!) But then there’s soaking in soothing warm and fizzy water; the

Behind the Nail Pros…

Ann Chang (right) joined us on set to show off her beautiful nail style. She created her signature acrylics, complete with 3-D floral embellishments, and added hand-painted detail, which was, believe it or not, a first for our veteran artist. You would never have known!

oh-so-satisfying sloughing off of dead skin; the massaging— oh, the massaging!—of feet and legs with sweet-smelling lotion; and then the icing on the cake: precisely applied polish. Pedicures are also unique in that they are ideal for when you want some alone time—no talking, just uninterrupted zoning out—but they also provide the seamless setting for social engagements: mother-daughter bonding, a girls’ day out, parties and even couples. This favorite service can also be seriously spruced up with delicious add-ons, such as paraffin and masques, or themed for the season or scent. And did I mention the art? From simple flowers to dazzling rhinestones, toenail art is just another way of making your toes tops. Oh, and there’s one more very important thing to point out: I’m not the only one who feels this way. Women—heck, some men too—everywhere adore this service! So, because we love pedicures for all the pampering we receive and the income to be made, we decided to dedicate this issue of NAILPRO to the all-mighty pedicure. You’ll find everything from tips for purchasing a pedi spa (page 138) to products that will make your services delightful (page 160), and everything in between. And with sandal season in full swing, you’d better get ready for the onslaught of appointments!

Wow! Just watched Dr. Oz’s gel manicure special. Oohhh I have lots to say. I am a fan of Dr. Oz but I am DISGUSTED by the blatant one-sidedness of his facts today. In a nutshell, he’s saying gel manicures (which are a HUGE trend in the beauty biz right now) are damaging to the nail plate, UV lights are contributing to skin cancer (they even did that special test to see sun damage on women’s hands and—shocker—most women’s hands show the sun’s UV effects!), and all removal techniques are heinous and thinning the nail plate up to 50%. He failed to get any other side of the story. Last time I checked, successful, licensed cosmetologists in this country weren’t scraping off healthy nails with dirty tools. And if there are unclean implements, or improper conditions in a salon, well then Dr. Oz, feel free to travel around with state boards of health in every state and battle our ENDLESS but continuous MISSION to uphold salon sanitation standards. There are, just like any other industry,

I know this method is a favorite for the Dr. Oz show, but enough is enough! We’ll keep you posted if/when we hear anything in response. —Ed.

NAILING THE NEWS

by Erin Kuschner

Behind the Veil IT’S SAFE TO SAY THAT THE REIGN OF STRICTLY POLISH MANICURES IS OVER. Tips topped with beads, crystals and foil are now standard practice, and even bling has moved from our rings to our nails. Nail Veils by Su Laing are one-of-a-kind, handcrafted nail jewelry made from semi-precious white and yellow bronze. A variety of styles, including Swarovski crystal veils and gold and silver plating can be formed to fit any nail bed; they fit snuggly over natural nails, acrylics, gels and other nail art as well. Available exclusively for nail technicians, the complete Nail Veils collection can be viewed at nailveils.com.

MORGAN TAYLOR Make room on your polish shelf—there’s a new lacquer in town. From the creators of Gelish comes the Morgan Taylor Collection, a professional nail polish line designed with quality, creativity and innovation in mind. When designing the collection, Danny Haile and David Daniel took the smallest details into consideration, including an easy-to-hold ergonomic cap and a custom-designed bottle weighted for a luxurious feel. The debut line includes 100 unique shades, ranging from glitters to metallic to creams (some of our personal favorites: sea green Lady Liberty and pale pink No Way Rosè). And, of course, Morgan Taylor offers a treatment line, too: The Essential Care Collection includes two base coats, two top coats and a matte finish.

TAXI!

THE BIG APPLE ARRIVED IN AUSTRALIA ON MARCH 5 FOR THE FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF SYDNEY’S FASHION PALETTE RUNWAY SHOWCASE, A CELEBRATION OF AUSTRALIA’S NEWEST

DESIGNERS. To coincide with this year’s “New York” theme, Minx created custom “taxi” nail coatings, a bright yellow cab design that perfectly matched the models’ yellow ribbon dresses.

“I was so excited to be given such a fun theme to work with,” says Monica Ropiha, leading Australian nail stylist. Ropiha collaborated with Janice Jordan, co-founder of Minx, to create the taxi design, as well as a few more appliques for the event: a soft nude pink applique with a white triangle and holographic accent line to accompany the main runway show on March 7, and a custom Circus StarBurst Minx the following night to go along with a collection’s circus theme. After all was said and done, Ropiha and her team applied more than 800 nails to 40 models. That kind of work deserves a drink—a Manhattan, perhaps?

Finally, keep up with the latest collections, trends and how-to videos with “What’s Haute,” a place where the China Glaze community comes together under a common love for lacquer. The app is available free for download from the App Store on iPhone, iPad or iPod touch or at appstore.com.

BTHE DOUBLE ACCENT NAILS Sometimes, all that’s needed to spice up polish is one odd manicured nail out: the accent. But this season, two is better than one. Lest you think the days of full-blown nail art have fizzled out on the runways, think again: A select group of designers still sought fanciful artistry for those 10 blank canvases. At Rebecca Minkoff,

FNAIL ART SCHOLARS a deceptively complicated oil slick design may give you pause, but as Essie lead tech Michelle Saunders explained it, all you need are drops of Essie As Gold As It Gets, Penny Talk, Go Overboard, Blue Rhapsody and Aruba Blue and a thin paintbrush to swirl the mixture together. Slightly more complicated was a color block graffiti design, crafted by CND lead tech Roxanne Valinoti for Creatures of the Wind. “[To create the hand-painted squiggles,] we thinned the polish first, and then used a double detail brush to paint,” says Valinoti, noting, “you could use an ultra-fine Sharpie marker to achieve a similar effect.” If you’re seeking embellishment, bedazzled digits ranged from spectacularly stoned at Liber-

But nowhere was artwork pushed to the limits more than at The Blonds, where CND lead tech Kristina Estabrooks and her team churned out a mind-boggling 22 designs inspired by Alfred Hitchcock movies and The Shining. “We used a lot of Shellac, which is an amazing medium; it allows you to embed stones, etch, do glitter, etc.,” she says, adding that between six techs, it took 62 hours to make all of the tips, including the $3,000-worth of

That favored nail art textile, lace, found itself wrapped around nail plates. At Houghton, scraps of fabric from the collection overlaid a coat of OPI Samoan Sand, while at Ruffian, rough-cut black lace acted as both veil and snakeskin texture on “lady in mourning” nails. Rather than use actual lace, Orly lead tech Simcha Whitehill hand painted intricate netting dotted with tiny florets for a naughtymeets-nice take on the trend.

A moon is not a moon for fall—or, at least not a traditional crescent moon. Instead, nail techs made small adjustments to the design, breathing new life into the half-moon mani. For Prabal Gurung, Sally Hansen lead tech Jin Soon Choi crafted skinny, sharp chevrons at the cuticle, noting, “I think 2013 nail art is all about the chevron!” Moons even received the ombré treatment at designer Daniel Vosivic’s show, where a vibrant teal and deepest navy from Dermelect ME’s upcoming Fall 2013 collection were “imperfectly” sponged. “We blended the two colors like you would makeup until we got the slightly un-uniform look we wanted,” says lead tech Elle.

CDLACEY THOUGHTS

China Glaze @ Tadashi Shoji

Typically, fall sees a flood of dark tones, both jeweled and inky. But the tonal tides changed this season when pale polish allowed the clothes to do the talking. Skin-flattering nudes, such as the customblend of Morgan Taylor In the Nude, Birthday Suit and Touch of Latte Please at the Les Copains show, put mannequin nails back on the map, while snowdrift white China Glaze Dandy Lyin’ Around lent to the “frostbitten beauty” look at Tadashi Shoji. China Glaze lead tech Joy A. Johnson described the twinkling light polish hue as “an airy shade with light dustings of sparkle, like fresh snow falling from the sky.” In other words, completely coldweather appropriate.

Badgley Mischka

It seemed like every other runway fixated on matte, but no two catwalks bore the same treatment. Here, a rundown of matte’s flat-out best incarnations.

Deborah Lippmann’s new matte polishes (set to debut in late 2013) retain a gorgeous subdued luster, mimicking the look of silk fabric. She polished almond talons at Badgley Mischka using Red Silk Boxers, a glowing matte burgundy.

Alexander Wang

Quickly becoming a staple manicure design, the black matte-and-gloss French decorated digits at DL1961, painted by lead tech Kristina Konarski using Zoya Raven as the base and an exclusive-to-the-show Zoya matte top coat. (No word on when or if it will be available to the rest of us!)

BSilky Matte:

your fan brush; you’ll need it for the “timeworn” stone appearance of the Alexander Wang nail. Backstage, CND co-founder Jan Arnold explained that techs feathered CND Colour Impossibly Plush polish from the sidewalls to the center of the nail using a fan brush, then sealed the look with top coat only to buff the design to a matte, eroded look using a buffing block.

BNeon Matte: We’ve heard whispers that the next wave of texture polish will be matte neons, but in the meantime, lead tech Pattie Yankee debuted her lacquer line, Patricia by Patricia Yankee, backstage at Jeremy Scott, where she dipped into several of her new mega-brights. She then flipped the script by dulling the vibrancy with a matte top coat to lend the look of “a street girl who doesn’t take care of herself.”

The Making of Our Cover:

Flirty Florals F

lowers are sprouting everywhere this season: in the garden, on denim and blazers and, of course, nails! So when nail pro Ann Chang said that flowers were her specialty, I knew this would be the perfect theme for our May cover. Instead of incorporating only 3-D flowers, I wanted these nails to be bursting with buds from all angles, and requested that Chang integrate hand-painted florals as well. To my great surprise, this master tech was a beginner when it came to hand painting. She practiced all weekend long, watching YouTube tutorials, until she was practically a pro come Monday’s photo shoot. You would never guess when looking at Chang’s exceptional work that this was a first for her! After the rest of the style team came in (hairstylist Giovanni Giuliano and makeup artist Michelle Tabor-Ramos), we were ready to shoot—except for one thing: The wardrobe never arrived! Thanks to art director Patty Quon-Sandberg, we were able to pull options in a pinch. Finally done up in flora from tips to toes, photographer Cory Sorensen created a springtime outside feel to our very much indoor studio.

Nail Artist Ann Chang is a 10-year master nail tech who specializes in pink-andwhites and 3-D nail art techniques.

Creating the Cover Nails

Photographer Cory Sorensen approaches his work with a combination of seriousness and humor. His work has appeared in magazines such as Shape and Men’s Fitness.

Chang prepped the model’s nails and applied forms. Then she began sculpting the free edge with yellow glitter acrylic.

2013

2

She wanted the extended stiletto nails to have three colors at the free edge, so she continued sculpting with black acrylic.

3

Chang used a translucent magenta acrylic at the very tip of the nail. She then added glitter to give it texture.

Hair Stylist Giovanni Giuliano uses his artistic vision to create looks for clients such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Vogue and Maybelline.

Makeup Artist Michelle Tabor-Ramos creates high-fashion makeup for celebrities, red carpet events, magazines and television.

4

Once the free edge was completed, Chang capped the entire nail in clear acrylic.

5

The next step was hand painting. Using a dotting tool, Chang added pink dots along the smile line. She then painted white diagonal stripes at the very tip of the nail to match the model’s shirt.

6

Chang came prepared with a few pre-done 3-D flowers. She notes that creating 3-D design elements in advance is also a great time-saver to use on clients in the salon.

After affixing the 3-D rose with clear acrylic, she attached two calla lilies and a leaf to complete the nail.

And while cracked heels and unpolished toes were unnoticeable throughout the winter, now they’re taking center stage. Get your clients’ feet in tip-top shape and perfect your pedicure skills by following these helpful tips from Julie DeLong, senior nail tech at Paul Kenneth Salon & Spa in Woburn, Massachusetts.

Consult for the Result “It is so important to take care of our feet,” DeLong says. “As we age, our feet start to deteriorate, and regular pedicures will not only help the appearance of our feet, but will also preserve the health of our feet.” Be sure to talk to your clients before a pedicure services begins. Discuss any problems or concerns they might have with their feet. “Ask specific questions,” advises DeLong. “What do you currently like about your nails and feet? Does anything bother you, like ingrown toenails, calluses, etc?” This will help you determine which treatments will be most appropriate for your client. During the consultation, you also need to address any health issues

or concerns, including diabetes or pregnancy. “For clients with diabetes, I cannot nip their cuticles and I am very careful with their massage, using very light and gentle pressure,” DeLong says. As for pregnant woman, DeLong avoids massaging the ankle area as this could trigger labor. “It’s just something to be cautious about.” For a client who wants stress relief or needs a pampering pedi for tired feet, soothe their aches and pains and alleviate any tensions through aromatherapy, massage and reflexology. “There are many different pressure points on the feet that can be massaged to help improve conditions, like back pain and headaches,” DeLong says. “The massage can range from 5 to 10 minutes depending on what the client wants to focus on during the pedicure.” Once

You can’t just apply a coat or two of nail polish and expect feet to look like they just stepped out of the spa. harden and cool for a few minutes, gently peel the paraffin wax off with a warm towel.

7 Steps to the Perfect Pedicure You can’t just apply a coat or two of nail polish and expect feet to look like they just stepped out of the spa. A great pedicure starts with a proper foundation. Start by soaking feet in warm water to help with circulation and relaxation. DeLong likes to add a coconut/mango mineral bath to the water to help deodorize the feet. Take one foot out of the bath and pat dry, then file the nails to achieve the desired round or square shape. DeLong finds that this is one of the most important steps for her clients. If you are using a nail clipper, be careful as you cut each nail and only do so if the nails are too long to be filed down with an emery board. If the nails are cut too short, it can cause an infection. Apply a few drops of cuticle remover to each toenail and gently push back the

the massage is completed, warm towels are wrapped around each foot to further enhance the spa experience. Incorporating aromatherapy by using scented candles, essential oils, fragrant lotions or salts can also be very beneficial and calming. Soothing scents to try are jasmine, lavender and sandalwood. If you notice extreme dryness or a client complains of parched skin, try adding a paraffin treatment to her pedicure to seal in skin’s moisture and restore the suppleness of the skin. This add-on service will open the pores and help increase circulation for softer feet. “I pour paraffin into baggies so that it’s easier to apply and to remove,” DeLong says. “It’s also more sanitary as opposed to placing hands and feet into a paraffin bowl.” After letting the paraffin

dead skin. Wash and clean each toe, then use cuticle nippers to remove any excess dead skin. Beware of how much you trim; remember nail technicians are prohibited from cutting live skin. Remove any imperfections on the nail plate by buffing the surface with a 180grit buffer. Once the nails are finished, apply a warm scrub starting just below the knee and down to the tips of the toes to exfoliate dead skin. Try not to use harsh metal tools on dry or callused areas of the feet. Instead, use a pumice stone, paying attention to each client’s sensitivity, before rinsing the legs and feet thoroughly with warm water.

It’s finally time to paint those toes! Follow DeLong’s secrets for long-lasting color. Just like an artist begins with a clean canvas before she paints, so should you. Apply cleanser on a lint-free pad to clean the nail of any residuals left over from the paraffin wax or lotion. Carefully apply a thin layer of base coat to all 10 nails. This helps bond the nail polish to the nail and smoothes the surface for color. Many base coats also contain nutrients that are vital to the health of the nails. Apply a thin coat of nail polish to each nail and let dry for a minute or two, then repeat. Painting on thinner layers of nail

polish will help it last longer compared to applying one thick coat. Don’t forget to top it off! Use a top coat to seal in the color, help prevent chipping and add a glossy sheen to the nails. The top coat acts as a barrier, so advise clients to apply it once a day for a longer lasting manicure. (Retail opp!) Don’t fret if nail color gets on the skin; it’s easy to fix. Simply use a clean nail brush—one you might use for gel or nail art— and dip it in a natural nailcare surface cleanser to carefully clean around the nail bed. To speed up drying time, try using a quick-drying oil or top coat on each nail before letting them sit for at least 10 to 15 minutes. The nails will be pretty dry at this point, but it does take a good part of a day for polish to fully dry. Applying polish in thin layers will help it dry a lot quicker.

ime to shed those close-toe shoes that winter so cruelly dictates that we wear and let our toes wiggle freely. Toe art is becoming a fashion accessory just as much as handbags and jewelry, and to leave toes bare is just plain passé. Talented nail artist Tami Toft-Hobson from Manning, South Carolina, offers a selection of designs to boost an otherwise boring pedicure. Bright watermelon nails are the perfect choice for any picnic, while a simple and sweet ladybug will appeal to even the most hesitant nail art client. She’s even incorporated a 3-D googly-eye option for those seeking a more standout creation. If the first two designs are too sweet and your client is looking for some summer sass, try the tropical French: The rhinestone will catch the sun and the eye of any passersby. For a quick service upgrade, a simple flower will do the trick. With all of these wonderful designs, there’s no excuse for dull toes this summer—so get out those flip-flops and start creating some stylish pedicures!

SAVVY SALON

Hello Kitty Beauty Spa

T

he world’s first Hello Kitty-themed spa opened at Town Centre Jumeirah, Dubai, in 2012 and is the first character-branded spa in the Middle East. It caters to “Kitty Queens” and “Young Princesses” with natural nail and beauty products within an environment that represents the beloved Japanese character, Hello Kitty. This purrrrr fectly posh spa is poised to transform the face of beauty and pampering, according to Fatimazahra Mohamed, marketing and PR assistant manager at Sharaf Retail. The cuteness factor is high at this sugary-sweet salon, but don’t let that fool you: Ms. Kitty’s loyal fans are treated like royalty with an opulent fairytale spa experience.

5 Reasons

Why We Think It’s Fabulous

1

Girls of all ages are celebrated.

The spa offers separate service menus for “Queens” and “Princesses,” using water-based nail polish for a young girl’s Kitty-cure and a custom massage lotion to go along with the woman’s pedicure. Organic products are available for children and adults, with additional product choices for adults. Both mommies and singles are able to indulge and relax in the kid-friendly

environment; if a child’s service finishes before her mother’s, the little princess will be led over to the Hello Kitty goodies that are for sale or the Kitty Cafe, which sells baked goods, teas, juices, pink lemonade and, of course, organic Hello Kitty cupcakes.

2

This one-stop shop provides everything.

Nails, facials, hair and makeup—did we mention the snacks?—are all available under one roof. The Hello Kitty Spa menu includes beauty packages for an allday, head-to-toe pampering experience, and BFF packages where clients can enjoy being pampered with their bestie. A separate party area is available for groups of little girls, bridal showers and bachelorette parties, and after all that grooming and pampering, clients can indulge their sweet tooth at Kitty Cafe.

3

The plush, elegant spa design is unique and comfortable.

4

The staff is professional.

There’s no mistaking where you are after entering the spa: Hello Kitty’s face peers at you from every wall, shelf and cupcake topping. But the salon doesn’t compromise comfort for branding. Comfy pillows and soft lounges are scattered throughout the space, enveloping clients in a relaxed atmosphere as they enjoy their services. The luxurious interior, with flourishes of pink and red, include vintage-inspired furnishings like the white vanity stations used for hair styling and displaying products, while a large plasma screen overlooks the salon floor. It’s almost as if you’ve fallen down the rabbit hole and into Wonderland—but instead of finding the Cheshire Cat, it’s Hello Kitty’s face that greets you.

The stylists and nail technicians have extensive backgrounds with proven track records in their field. They continue to research and practice new styles and techniques in hair, nails and styling throughout the year and give their undivided attention to their clients on a daily basis. The staff also understands the importance of sanitation and cleanliness.

5

It’s based on Hello Kitty!

Three decades since Hello Kitty made her debut on a small coin purse in Japan, her popularity has multiplied exponentially from Japan to all around the world. This iconic wide-eyed feline has a way of bringing smiles to everyone she encounters, so it seems fitting that she finally has her own place of pampering. “The Hello Kitty Beauty Spa is an innovative extension to the brand which allows a younger audience to experience the luxury and pleasures of a day at the spa within an environment that represents the brand,” says Fatima Sharaf, director of Sharaf Retail.

Upselling Increase your sales by learning how to tactfully upgrade your clients’ services.

U

PSELLING, a sales technique where the seller encourages the buyer to add value to a sale that they’re already willing to make, can conjure up images of pushy car salesmen and aggressive telemarketers. However, upselling doesn’t have to be a smarmy part of being a nail technician. The beauty of correctly upselling is that it reinforces how well you’re taking care of your clients, which leads to client retention and an improved bottom line. It’s also a smart business tactic to add sales without ever having to raise prices or find new clients. Learning this vital skill is a must in the nail industry. If you or your salon have difficulty upgrading clients because of poor communication skills, fear of appearing overbearing or low motivation, you’re in luck: The art of upselling can easily be learned!

Think Differently A CLIENT OF YOURS COMES INTO THE SALON FOR A BASIC PEDICURE. You know from your conversation that she’s about to jet off to the Caribbean for some barefoot time in the sand, but the soles of her feet are particularly dry, and the deluxe pedicure you offer is enough to turn even the toughest of soles into baby soft skin. You mention that you offer a deluxe pedicure for $20 more. What you don’t mention is that the extra $20 will get her a smoothing paraffin treatment and a decadent sugar scrub. You keep your sales pitch short because you don’t want to appear pushy. Your client, only hearing the price increase, declines the deluxe pedicure and leaves your salon to find a pair of flip-flops that will cover up the cracked skin on her feet. You just lost out on making a bigger sale. And, worst of all, your client lost out on sandal-worthy feet. Jordan Bowditch, marketing communications manager at TrendSource, believes “upselling is the easiest way to increase profits and drive revenue. However, owners and managers are challenged every day to create an upselling environment that increases sales while leaving the client with a positive perception of the transaction and not feeling ‘sold to.’” The key to achieving a larger bank account and happier clients is to think of the upsell not as a sales pitch, but as an offer to help. Your clients are sitting in your chair because you are the expert; telling them about add-on services that would solve their foot woes or nail dilemmas is one way you can share your expertise with your clients. Think of yourself as helping your clients get what they want and need.

The key to achieving a larger bank account and happier clients is to think of the upsell not as a sales pitch, but as an offer to help.

Since nail technicians are not mind readers, it helps to ask questions in order to find out what type of treatment your client is most likely to purchase. “Questions are the key to selling,” according to Jeff Goldberg, owner of sales consulting firm Jeff Goldberg & Associates and manicure enthusiast. By asking questions, you’re showing an interest in your client’s life and making the appointment more personable—which goes a long way toward making your upsell seem less like a hard sell and more like advice coming from a friend. Most importantly, your clients’ answers can help you tailor your upsell to their needs. If your client is attending a wedding or heading to a beach party, you can offer her an appropriately upgraded nail package suited just for her. Don’t forget to ask questions that go beyond her weekend plans. Does she care for her own cuticles? Does she file her calluses? Does she exfoliate her skin? “You want to know how people do the things you offer,” explains Goldberg, “because once you know what they do you can offer a better solution.” If a client responds to your question about her dry skin by saying she moisturizes her feet with lotion, you can mention the benefits of a mask, offering her a service that she will want to add on to her basic pedicure.

Read Your Clients IF YOUR CLIENT IS TOO RELAXED TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS, YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO UPSELL IS NOT LOST. To find out what type of upgrade she might be interested in, simply look at her feet. Calluses, cracked heels and remnants of nail art on her toenails all hint at what services she would consider paying more for. “During a pedicure, we look for guests with drier skin, guests who are more mature, those guests that ‘purr’—this tells us there is an opportunity to upsell to our deluxe organic line,” says Marsha Power, owner of Garbo A Salon & Spa in Austin, Texas. Finding those guests that purr can be difficult when you’re concentrating on their feet and not their faces. Since not every client will respond the same way to an upsell—some might purr, but some might roar—you need to learn how to read a client’s behavior with a quick glance.

A client who seems frantic and spends most of the appointment checking her watch is in a rush— she’s not in the mood to hear about the 15 different scents your mask comes in. For clients like this, Goldberg suggests “skipping the attempt to upsell altogether or making it very quick while acknowledging that they’re in a rush. Otherwise, it seems like all you care about is the sale.”

118

NAILPRO

M AY

2013

Distracted clients, meanwhile, make for very poor listeners. If your client has her cell phone firmly placed at her ear, she won’t be listening to your suggestion that she add a callus removal to her basic pedicure. Instead of trying to talk over the person on the other end of the line, wait until your client hangs up and focuses her attention on the relaxation at hand. If that doesn’t happen, plan ahead for an upsell in the future. When she’s at the cash register, hand her a brochure outlining your deluxe pedicure and explain what the extra cost will get her. Chances are, she’ll ask for the upgraded pedicure outright at her future appointments. Don’t mistake distractedness for shyness; a client who listens to what you have to say but doesn’t add much to the conversation is probably introverted and more reserved than your average client. Shy customers can be put off by overly enthusiastic upsell attempts, so Goldberg recommends you be gentle with them. “Be aware of their body language. Back off immediately if you see any hesitation from them. You don’t want to make them feel uncomfortable and choose to go somewhere else next time.” The ideal client is relaxed. After sitting in your pedicure chair for 10 minutes, most of your clients will be stress-free, and this is the best time to start upselling. According to Power, “Clients normally want to relax, so asking them once you touch them tends to work best. There is an ‘ahhhhh’ moment, and it’s easier then to mention the upgraded versions or additions that they can add to their services.” Donna Marri, lead nail technician at Fox & Jane Salon and Finishing Bar in New York, takes her cue from her clients. “Most often the client will apologize for how horrible her feet look. This is when I inspect her feet and suggest the client upgrades her express pedicure to a spa Ice Cream Pedicure.”

The key to achieving a larger bank account and happier clients is to think of the upsell not as a sales pitch, but as an offer to help.

Have a Script THE WAY YOU DESCRIBE THE UPGRADES HAS A DIRECT IMPACT ON THE NUMBER OF CLIENTS WHO WILL ADD THESE SERVICES TO THEIR BILL. Fail to describe what the extra money buys her, and you risk losing your client’s attention. Enthusiastically claim that the deluxe pedicure will be the best experience of her life, and you risk losing your client’s trust. Always be upfront about how much each upgrade will cost, but don’t let the dollar signs be the focus of your upsell. “We like to avoid sticker shock,” says Power, “while still promoting and explaining our extra services and cross-promoting other services from within the salon/spa. When you don’t pressure, but you present the options and perform them well, upselling comes naturally.” The nail techs at Power’s salon keep their upsells short and simple. “We tell them it’s $15 more and 20 minutes longer. People need a rest and a break so asking them for $20 for an hour more is totally acceptable.” If a client shows interest in the products on your shelves, take it as a cue to talk about the types of products you use in your deluxe pedicure. Marri does just this with her clients; she describes the differences between the basic and the deluxe pedicure, going into detail about the marshmallow mask and the scented scrubs. “Great

smelling and effective products sell themselves; you just have to talk about them,” says Marri. Sometimes a client won’t give you an opening to talk about your upgrades. If the conversation is straying away from the services you offer, one way to get it back on track is to mention what your other clients are doing. Lincoln Murphy, managing director at Sixteen Ventures, calls this social proof. The thought behind it is that if other women are upgrading their pedicures, there must be some value to

the service. Mention the upcoming sandal season and how your clients seem to be anticipating the warm weather. Murphy suggests nail techs use a simple script to keep the conversation going: “‘I’ve been doing a bunch of paraffin treatments and foot masks the last few days. Seems almost every one of my ladies has asked for one of those treatments . . . and I don’t blame them; they feel

great and really do put moisture back into your feet.’” Then casually mention that you have time between her and your next client if she wants the upgraded treatment. “The real key is ‘framing’ the upsell,” advises Murphy. “Getting your customers to want it but not selling them on it, getting them excited about it.” Do this, and your clients won’t feel pressured at all.

When it comes to upselling, silence really is golden. Going on and on about the benefits of your upgraded pedicure service will make you seem either pushy or desperate. After you give your brief upsell, be quiet for a moment, “even if there is an awkward silence,” says Mike Johnson from Vexxt Marketing, “because frequently the client will say yes.” Keep talking throughout that silence, and you risk losing the upsell. It also pays to know when to quit. Touting the benefits of your paraffin treatment when your client clearly doesn’t want it is a sure way to lose business. If she continues to ask questions about your upgrades and she’s paying attention to your answers, keep on selling. But if she seems bored, closed off or hostile, drop the subject of add-ons and let her enjoy what she’s paying for. And even if your client is resistant to the idea of an upgrade today, don’t forget that she might consider one in the future. Some clients will turn down an upsell if they don’t have the funds in their bank account or extra time in their schedule. To ensure your clients show up for their appointments ready to indulge, let them know about your pedicure add-ons ahead of time. Advertising is an easy way to get the word out to your regular clients about all the extra services you offer. And since this ad campaign targets your existing clients, it doesn’t have to cost you money. Johnson suggests taking your advertising digital. “A simple email talking about a monthly featured deluxe pedicure sets the stage for your clients’ appointment.” They’ll mention the addons they’re interested in before they sit in the pedicure chair, leaving you free to focus on your clients’ complete relaxation. When done right, upselling will increase your profits, but you won’t know if you’re doing it right unless you measure your success rate. According to Bowditch, “You get what you measure.” Monitoring the number of your clients who add an upgrade onto their bill shows whether you’re getting the upsell right or whether you need to improve your selling skills. Think of your offer to upgrade as friendly advice and sell your client only the services she needs. Avoid trying to manipulate or coerce your clients for the sake of extra money, and your rate of upselling success will soar—along with your profits. Glove Hand in

Nail technicians speak up about a gloved hand in the salon.

O

ne thing is certain when it comes to handwear in the salon—everyone has a different opinion. Some technicians never wear them, others never

go without, and some only wear gloves during certain portions of a service. NAILPRO asked technicians about the why and when of glove use. See if you agree.

NEVER TOUCH THEM NAIL AND BODY SERVICES WILL ALWAYS BE SEEN AS SKIN TO SKIN TREATMENTS FOR SOME, WHICH IS WHY MANY TECHNICIANS CHOOSE TO AVOID GLOVES ALTOGETHER WHEN WORKING ON CLIENTS. “I’ve been a licensed technician and instructor since 1998, and it’s been my experience through the years to not wear gloves during pedicure services,” says Cindy Heidemann, owner, administrator and instructor at ABC School of Cosmetology, Esthetics & Nail Technology in Lake in the Hills, Illinois. “Students are instructed in the proper application of all chemicals so that both they and their clients are safe. Unless there is a medical condition, it has been our experience that our clients do not like the idea of the technician wearing gloves.” Many techs feel that as long as both the nail technician and the client wash their hands with soap and water before the service begins, gloves are not necessary.

Can’t Live Without Them JUST AS THERE ARE THOSE WHO ARE AGAINST THE USE OF GLOVES, THERE ARE ALSO THOSE WHO COULDN’T IMAGINE A SERVICE WITHOUT THEM. “I am 100 percent for using gloves, especially for pedicures,” says Danielle Carr, owner of Nails by Danielle in Brandon, Florida. “I wear them primarily for sanitary reasons, but I find that it protects my own manicure as well. Filing the nails and the use of chemicals, whether it’s polish remover or callus remover, are ways to potentially ruin my own nails in the process. My clients love that I wear gloves, and I can’t imagine doing a pedicure without them!” Christina Monroe, owner of Love Those Toes Mobile Nail Spa in Bowie, Maryland, agrees that gloves are a necessity when it comes to protecting her most important asset and the thing that helps to sell her services—her nails. “Pedicures are my specialty and I always wear gloves when performing them for my own safety,” says Monroe. “Although I conduct a thorough pre-service consultation on each client, feet can carry all kinds of germs, dirt and bacteria. Therefore, I wear gloves to protect my nails and hands. After all, a professional nail technician’s nails and hands should always be in pristine condition. Otherwise, it becomes rather difficult to market your services and gain new clients. In addition, my hands are in water so often, wearing gloves helps prevent swelling and wrinkling.” Some nail technicians wear gloves for every service, from a quick polish change to a pedicure. Included in this bunch is Tricia Abreu, owner of Nail Artistry by Tricia in Miami. “Wearing gloves is not only hygienic for my client and me, but it also helps protect my hands, skin and nails from chemicals used during nail services,” says Abreu. “On several occasions I have tried to simply sanitize my hands and my client’s prior to a manicure, but I have very dry skin, and hand sanitizers tend to dry my skin even more. Wearing gloves while working, just as most things in life, took some getting used to, but once I started wearing them regularly, it became normal and I was able to perform my service perfectly.”

“Wearing gloves is not only hygienic for my client and me, but it also helps protect my hands, skin and nails from chemicals used during nail services.”

SHOULD I TRY GLOVES?

IF YOU’RE ON THE FENCE ABOUT WEARING GLOVES BUT ARE WILLING TO TRY THEM, CONSIDER TESTING THEM DURING CERTAIN PORTIONS OF YOUR PEDICURE THAT INVOLVE HARSHER PRODUCTS SUCH AS CALLUS SOFTENERS. YOU MAY DISCOVER THAT THIS CLEARS UP SOME LINGERING DRYNESS YOU’VE BEEN EXPERIENCING. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) warns that skin can easily and quickly absorb certain solvents, which may damage skin by removing natural oils that lead to dryness and/or irritation, making it even easier for other ingredients to enter the body. Because of this, the EPA recommends that nail technicians protect their hands with gloves made of nitrile, as latex and vinyl gloves are permeable to many nail products and do not offer the needed protection.

Sometimes Yes, Sometimes No WHILE GLOVES MAY NOT BE NEEDED THROUGHOUT A SERVICE, THERE MAY BE CERTAIN CHEMICALS THAT A TECHNICIAN DOES NOT WANT TO COME IN CONTACT WITH. Thus, they will leave

the gloves off and only don them when appropriate. “I wear gloves when working with acrylics because my skin is allergic to the dust,” says Jan Studesville, owner of Just Nails in Madison, Wisconsin. “I also wear gloves when filing fiberglass and gels to reduce the dust on my hands. I don’t wear them for manicures or pedicures. Lack of good hygiene would be the only reason I can think of for wearing gloves during those services.” Most of the techs we spoke with who periodically wear gloves, do so when they are applying products that are a bit harsher, such as callus softeners. “I do not wear gloves during pedicures or any other service in its entirety,” says Melody Hand, licensed nail technician at Tickled Pink Salon in Clayton, North Carolina. “I’ve been doing nails since 1989 and have not had any issues arise from not wearing gloves. I inspect my client’s feet prior to beginning a service so I know whether or not I should continue the service. I wear them during certain parts of particular services, such as a callus treatment where solutions are used to soften calluses. But other than that, I do not wear them. I don’t like the feel of them on my own skin. Also, a massage is very uncomfortable for the client when the provider is wearing gloves. And I’m a tactile person, so with gloves on I can’t feel what I’m doing.” Still, other technicians find that the products they use are able to absorb better if they wear gloves. “I find gloves especially helpful during product application,” says Christy Brown from N2U Mobile Salon in Richmond, Virginia. “The gloves allow all of the product to be used on the client and not absorbed into my skin, plus it provides ‘slip’ for the massage.” Brown notes that if she has a new client who has broken skin, or if she has broken skin herself, she will use gloves. “Depending on the type of service (medical versus spa pedicure) gloves can enhance the perception of safety, or impede the idea of relaxation,” adds Brown. “As the service provider, it’s up to us to determine the expectations of our clients, and balance those expectations with both the client’s and our own safety. If I choose to wear gloves and the client questions me, I say that I have a cut that I need to protect; no one has ever taken offense at this reasoning as most of us know how uncomfortable a paper cut can be if you get it wet.” Liz Barrett is an Oxford, MS-based freelance writer and editor.

ARE GLOVES ENOUGH? Always inspect each

client before performing any service—manicure or pedicure. Simply wearing gloves is not enough to protect you or your clients from spreading bacteria and infections. Think of all the tools, polishes and footbaths that you are sharing. Complete a thorough consultation and do not perform a service on anyone who has open wounds or an infection. Above all, always sanitize your tools after each and every client.

PAMPERING

Pedicures

Entice your clients with deluxe additions to your pedicure menu.

Make it an easy choice for them by creating a menu full of decadent pedicures. While this certainly includes adding steps to the service, such as a foot masque and extended massage, it also means creating a full sensory experience for the client. Add a complementary beverage (something with flavors that are mimicked in the pedicure), flickering candles (electric tea lights do the trick, too!) and a scented heat wrap to place around the neck. Of course, all of the bells and whistles come with a hefty price tag, so it’s important to make your clients feel as though the cost is worth the experience. Not sure where to begin? Get inspired with these sumptuous pedicures!

footnanny GLORIA WILLIAMS, ALSO KNOWN AS THE “FOOTNANNY,” BELIEVES THAT PRESENTATION IS HALF OF THE PEDICURE EXPERIENCE. Prep your station prior to your client’s arrival with a full pedicure basin, foot scrub in one martini glass and footnanny Citrus Foot Cream in another, and serve your client a refreshing beverage. Williams’ favorites are a tangerine martini, tangerine smoothie or tangerine hot or ice tea with lemon.

1 2

Add enough foot soap to make lots of suds.

Add orange and lemon aromatherapy oils to the basin (10 drops of each aroma).

3

Soak your client’s feet for five minutes prior to starting the pedicure. This gives the client time to relax and enjoy the citrus aroma.

4

Perform a complete standard pedicure on your client. After the cuticle work and exfoliating the bottoms of feet, gently massage a palm-size amount of your favorite citrus foot scrub from the tip of the toes all the way up to the knees. Customize! You can add aromatherapy oils to 1/2 cup of finely ground sea salt and sugar blend combined with 1/2 cup of extra virgin olive oil to make your own scrub.

5

Rinse scrub off of legs and feet. Remove the feet from the basin and towel dry from feet to knees.

6

Apply a quarter-size dollop of footnanny Citrus Foot Cream to each foot up to the knee and give a relaxing five-minute massage.

7

Finish the refreshing pedicure with polish in a bright summer color.

Things to Know WHEN BUYING A PEDICURE SPA

Purchasing a pedicure throne is a big investment— one you can’t take lightly when it comes to your business. Take a cue from pros who will guide you through the process of what to look for before making that big-ticket buy.

A

PEDICURE SPA IS ONE OF THE LARGEST EXPENSES THAT A SALON OWNER CAN HAVE.

Strangely enough, it also happens to be a piece of equipment that is frequently purchased based solely on price and very little research. This often results in downtime, expensive repairs and premature replacement. The answer, of course, is taking the time to educate yourself in order to make an informed decision, but what should you look for? We have some suggestions on where to start. The Experts We gathered five different perspectives to round out this article: a salon owner, salon manager/nail technician, repair technician, distributor and manufacturer. Each of these professionals had very strong—and similar!—feedback about how the pedicure spa purchasing experience should go.

The Manufacturer: KAREN RAASCH, director of sales and marketing, Continuum, New Berlin, Wisconsin salonpedicurespas.com

The Repair Technician: BILL LINDLEY, founder of Spa One Repair, Patterson, California spaonerepair.com

Made in the

USA

EDUCATING YOURSELF ABOUT WHERE YOUR FAVORITE PEDICURE SPAS ARE MADE IS A VERY IMPORTANT PART OF THE PURCHASING PROCESS. “In my opinion, there is no substitute for a pedicure spa that is built in the United States, utilizing quality components from U.S. suppliers,” Raasch says. “A lot of manufacturers claim their spas are built in the U.S., but if you just do a little digging, you’ll find the spas are brought over from China and are merely assembled here. It’s better to buy four spas that are dependable than to buy eight that keep failing.” Bill Lindley, founder of Spa One Repair, offers another perspective as someone who repairs pedicure spas. “Getting [replacement] parts for foreign-manufactured spas is nearly impossible.” Lindley believes that even the quality of the metal used in the chairs is something a spa owner should research. “The metals that are used may look sturdy, but they are really soft and when you put a heavier client into the chair, it can actually bend the frame.” A misshapen frame decreases the life of a pedicure spa and can make it necessary to purchase a replacement sooner than you’re expecting.

PHOTO: ©THINKSTOCKPHOTOS.COM

YOU MIGHT THINK THAT YOUR BUDGET IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR WHEN PURCHASING A PEDICURE SPA, BUT THAT’S ONLY HALF OF THE EQUATION. The quality of the unit makes up the other half. Thinking of your purchase in terms of value, as in “How can I get the most for my money?” is more effective than throwing caution to the wind by shopping based on price alone. Karen Raasch, sales and marketing director for pedicure spa manufacturer Continuum, says that shopping “for the best spas that you can afford—the ones that are made with quality components—will eliminate so many problems along the way.” Carolyn Collins, regional manager at distributor Takara Belmont, agrees that shopping with value in mind is very uncommon. “When people come into our showroom, about 80 percent of them are shopping on price.” Collins says that the majority of people who come looking to buy fall into one of three categories: “They either want to find the cheapest unit possible; they have bought the cheap unit and learned from their mistake and are now looking for a mid-grade unit; or they haven’t done any research whatsoever (coming in ‘cold’) and want me to tell them everything about all of the pedicure spas.” The danger of purchasing an inexpensive pedicure spa is that you may end up with astronomical repair costs later and when you least expect it. Pedicures are huge moneymakers, and having one chair down can be costly, never mind the price of getting it fixed. Erin Drywa, purchasing manager and nail tech at Renaissance Day Spa in Fayetteville, North Carolina, says, “Durability is huge for us. Our chairs run eight hours a day, six days per week. [When one of them isn’t working] our clients have a big problem with it. When they’re paying $55 for a pedicure and can easily go somewhere else for $25, you want everything to work!” Besides the inconvenience incurred by the salon and the clients, a broken chair takes away from the relaxing spa atmosphere by injecting negativity into the client experience.

Sanitation

CLEANLINESS HAS ALWAYS BEEN IMPORTANT, BUT THESE DAYS CLIENTS ARE MUCH MORE EDUCATED (AND OBSERVANT) THAN THEY USED TO BE. They’re making sure that their feet are soaking in spas that have been properly cleaned. When purchasing pedicure spas, ask lots of questions about how easy they are to clean and what kinds of product should be used. Certain products can damage some spas; in fact, the usage of bleach actually voids out some warranties. Ask the company a lot of questions about sanitation; if they can’t easily answer, consider that to be a red flag. Keep in mind that spas with multiple jets are very time consuming to clean because each jet needs to be scrubbed and cleaned individually. “Consider a no-jet tub,” Raasch recommends. “They are much easier to keep clean.”

3

4

Design

THE MOST OBVIOUS DESIGN ELEMENT OF A PEDICURE SPA IS THE OVERALL LOOK, WHICH IS USUALLY WHAT ENTICES A PERSON TO LEARN MORE. Everyone wants a pedicure spa that complements the salon decor. Drywa replaced the pedicure spas in her salons last fall, and the appearance of the chairs was a high priority. “I wanted chairs that looked professional but sophisticated, and nothing like the chairs in the mall salons where there are rows and rows of them.” When replacing old chairs, it’s very important to either purchase one that fits the footprint (the allotted space on the floor, where the old chairs sit) or make sure the plumbing can be concealed. For new salons, Raasch has some suggestions: “Start with one or two chairs, and as you get confidence in the company and your clientele

“The footrests often place feet in odd positions. It’s critical to consider ergonomics for the health of the technician.”

grows, invest in different spas for different areas instead of buying 10 of the same kind.” She adds that portable spas might be a good investment to use anywhere in the salon, and that trying chairs in different price ranges can actually help determine the clientele and assist with the menu. Also important is the chair’s weight capacity and range of motion. “Some chairs only support 200 pounds and others easily accommodate people who weigh 350 pounds or more. You want a chair that is reliable and able to be comfortable for every height and shape. A long range of motion (sliding forward and back) will accommodate tall and short people,” says Raasch. Hillary Fry, owner of Solessence in Shorewood, Wisconsin, suggests sitting in chairs and taking measurements to check ergonomics. “Especially with the use of more footbaths, the Education is the best tool to make an informed decision about purchasing distance between clients’ feet and where the technicians a pedicure spa. Start your research with these tips: need to sit is often way off. This can cause great discomfort.” • Read nail trade publications and visit their websites to get the latest news and trends. Check the footrests, too, she notes. “The footrests often • Speak with distributors to find out what brands have proven reliable. place feet in odd positions. For many years, I competed in—and won—international nail competitions and I’ve been sponsored by several companies. Every competition has a dizzying array of variables: the rules, the country, the product, the judges, two hands, one hand, the climate, the time zone. The game is different every time you step up to the nail plate. That taught me a hell of a lot. Now I’m at a point in my career to build on all that knowledge and share it. So I’ve teamed up with Light Elegance on a new acrylic line. Jim and I worked on formulas, tips, files, brushes, liquids, powders to make it tech- and client-friendly. Easy, fast, durable, flexible, beautiful. Creating product is a whole new way for me to compete. This time I think we all win.

The Manufacturer MUCH LIKE ANY OTHER MAJOR PURCHASE, IT’S A GOOD IDEA TO MEET THE MANUFACTURER TO SEE HOW EASY IT IS TO CONTACT AND INTERACT WITH THEM. A company with outstanding customer service can actually add value to a purchase because, in a sense, you’re also buying security and confidence that you’ll be treated fairly when something needs to be resolved. “Knowing who manufactures your chair is very important,” Lindley says. “You should know about the manufacturer and not just the company you purchase the chair from (if they are different).”

When researching a manufacturer, it’s important to ask the following questions: • Does the manufacturer have a strong history in the pedicure business? • Does the manufacturer have a favorable reputation with salons and distributors? • Is the company financially secure (or growing, or downsizing)? • How is the customer service? Is it accessible, or is it likely you’ll never hear from them again after you make the purchase? • Are the employees empowered to solve problems or do they have to go through layers of management to get answers? Taking the time to learn about the different types of pedicure spas and the details about their manufacturer, quality, design, sanitation procedures and where they are made is the best way to make a smart purchase. Collins suggests that you don’t rush the purchase. If you go to a showroom and discover that you need to learn more, listen to your gut. “Sometimes [my customers] leave, do more research themselves, and then come back with questions.” Ideally, you want to have absolutely no regrets about your deal, and if you exhaust all resources before placing your order, regrets shouldn’t come into play. As Drywa says, forewarned is forearmed. “With any high-end purchase for your salon, you have to take so much into consideration and you can’t just go the cheap route on something like this because you get what you pay for. [Pedicure spas are] your moneymaker, and you have to please your clients who want something they can’t get down the street.” Melisa Wells is a freelance writer and the salon coordinator at Nail Dimensions in Wheaton, IL.

What’s Lurking in Your

FOOTBATH IT’S FAR FROM HALLOWEEN, BUT THE CREEPY GERMS LURKING IN A DIRTY FOOTBATH ARE DOWNRIGHT SCARY.

In fact, if a state board inspector came in and swabbed your footbath after every client, you may be surprised with the results. What you think is a “good enough” cleanup, probably isn’t. “When it comes to cleaning and disinfection, we don’t want to do OK,” says Doug Schoon, chief scientific advisor for CND. “We don’t want to do good. We want to follow instructions exactly. If the manufacturer’s instructions are not followed exactly, you can’t expect that it was properly disinfected.” One of the biggest issues, according to Schoon, is that some nail techs make up their own cleaning and disinfection routines rather than following manufacturer or state board instructions. “Most people don’t do enough if they make up their own procedures,” says Schoon. For example, if your disinfectant’s formulation is too weak or too strong, it won’t be effective, since the effectiveness is guaranteed at only certain strengths. Leaving the solution in the basin for too long or short of a time can also be harmful. “Too short of a time might not kill all the organisms. Too long of a time, you can start to corrode the insides of your tub and create little microscopic pits where the bacteria can begin to grow faster.”

“Bacteria can begin to grow to concentrations that could cause a transmission of infection pretty quickly, within a day or two certainly, in a pedicure throne.”

Wherever you create conditions that are conducive for bacteria to grow, they’ll grow. “Same with plants,” says Schoon. “If the conditions are right and the plant has plenty of fertilizer, a place to grow where it’s happy, warmth and moisture, it will grow. [Bacteria] also needs those four things to at least survive and then, if conditions are right, they begin to multiply.”

How quickly germs in your footbath multiply depends on the condition (i.e., how much food they have and the type of organism it is). Some tend to grow quickly while others grow slowly and build up over time. “Bacteria can begin to grow to concentrations that could cause a transmission of infection pretty quickly, within a day or two certainly, in a pedicure throne,” says Schoon.

“That’s why, even between clients, the chairs really need to be properly cleaned and disinfected to prevent the transmission of bacteria.” What, exactly, are the scary things skulking in an untidy footbath? We mentioned bacteria, which is one possibility. The others are fungi and viruses. “Fungus and bacteria are living things,” says Schoon. “Viruses are not living continued on page 152

Instructions for

Stand-Alone Tubs

O

ne of the most neglected steps in cleaning and disinfecting stand-alone pedicure tubs and basins is the disinfecting soak, as salon workers are oftentimes “too busy” to allow the disinfecting solution to work for the full 10 minutes between clients, or techs sometimes try to cut costs by diluting the disinfecting solution. “Inadequate sanitation and disinfection of the pedicure tub spreads fungus and bacterial and viral infections,” says Alison Till Harris from Belava in Canoga Park, California, which offers pedicure tubs with disposable liners. “Clients using the same tub after an infected client take home all preceding clients’ infections combined.”

Harris admits that learning the proper techniques for disinfecting a stand-alone basin, as written by the California Board of Barbering & Cosmetology, for example, is not an easy task. “The rules are sometimes confusing and are hidden inside of paragraphs of regulations, and require serious revision to create simple, clear instruction on proper care of footbath in pedicuring,” she says. To help techs get a handle on proper sanitation and disinfection techniques, we’ve provided NMC/INTA instructions below. Be sure, however, to check your state board’s rules and regulations for proper techniques, as each state has its own guidelines.

Non-whirlpool foot basins or tubs This includes basins, tubs, footbaths, sinks and bowls—all non-electrical equipment that hold water for a client’s feet during a pedicure service.

After every client:

1 2

Drain all water from the foot basin or tub.

Clean all inside surfaces of the foot basin or tub with a clean, disinfected brush and liquid soap and water to remove all visible residue. Rinse the basin or tub with clean water.

3 4

Refill the basin with clean water and the correct amount (read the label for mixing instructions) of EPA registered hospital disinfectant. Leave this disinfecting solution in the basin for 10 minutes. Drain, rinse and wipe dry with a clean paper towel.

5

At the end of every day:

1 2 3

Clean all inside surfaces of the foot basin or tub with a brush and liquid soap and water to remove all visible residue. Fill the basin or tub with water and the correct amount (read the label for mixing instructions) of the EPA registered hospital disinfectant. Leave this disinfecting solution in the basin for 10 minutes. Drain, rinse and wipe dry with a clean paper towel.

“Many nail techs have the client put her feet in the footbath without looking at the feet ďŹ rst.â€? things. They highjack other cells to create their living spaces, so to speak. A wart virus would invade and live in your skin tissues, whereas the bacteria or fungal organism will actually get into your skin tissue and begin to live between the cracks and crevices of them and even break down the tissue so that they can ďŹ nd a place to grow. They can live just about wherever the conditions are right and where they can multiply and divide.â€? Bacteria, fungus and viruses can all be transmitted by surfaces in the salon. Viruses can cause many kinds of diseases, including the u, but bacterial and fungal organisms tend to be more prevalent in footspas. The majority of dangers that people are exposed to in footbaths include organisms that grow on toenails or live on the skin. Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) is one infection caused by fungus. The most common symptom is cracked, aking, peeling skin between the toes or on the side of the foot. Oftentimes, nail techs don’t detect the infection prior to putting the client’s foot in the bath because a proper consultation was not done. “Many nail techs have the client put her feet in the footbath without looking at the feet ďŹ rst,â€? explains master nail technician Vicki Peters. “Before any pedicure is performed, the tech should gently handle the feet and look at the tops and bottoms of the

feet and in between the toes while asking the client if she has any issues, is diabetic or has any sensitivity or numbness. Ask how the client wants her nails clipped and what she wants to achieve with her pedicure. Discuss polish colors and then soak the feet.â€? Let’s say one of your clients that received a pedicure had athlete’s foot, left the salon, and then you did not properly clean and disinfect the foot basin. Can you guess how likely it is that the next person will get that infection? Schoon explains how an infection like athlete’s foot gets transmitted: “If someone just put their foot down on the carpet and I put my foot on that carpet an hour or so later, I’m probably not going to get a fungal infection unless I have a little cut on the bottom of my foot,â€? he says. “Five people can walk across that same oor or carpet and only one person might get a fungal infection because they had a small entryway in the bottom of the foot; a small abrasion, cut or tear where the organism could get inside and start colonizing.â€? Most organisms that spread at the salon are called “opportunistic.â€? If there’s an opportunity, like when skin is broken, they will grow. “They don’t necessarily burrow into your skin,â€? says continued on page 156

Pedi Thrones When it comes to cleaning and disinfecting pedicure thrones, follow instructions to a T and you have nothing to worry about. Skip a step or make up your own procedure, and you are, even unintentionally, putting clients’ health in jeopardy. “It’s troubling because a small fraction of professional nail techs really clean the whirlpool baths correctly,” says master nail technician Vicki Peters. “What they don’t realize is that the jets need to be removed and washed with a brush and soap and water, and placed in the bath while it is being properly disinfected in between every pedicure. The other thing that is not always done correctly is the mix ratio of the disinfection solution that is put into the whirlpool bath for disinfection. It needs to be correctly pre-mixed for the amount of gallons the bath holds to be effective. Some just pour a small amount into it and don’t run it for 10 minutes.” For older whirlpool units, Peters recommends periodically cleaning out the pipes with a bio film cleaner. “Even though a pedicure spa is considered pipe-free or pipeless, this does not dismiss the fact that the unit still needs to be properly sanitized and disinfected,” says Dawn Holz, president of Milwaukee, Wisconsinbased European Touch. “Any moveable part within the tub area must be removed and properly sanitized and disinfected. Most state boards require an EPA registered disinfectant; many [techs] are just using a household cleaner!” To help clear up any confusion you may have about disinfecting your pedi spa, we’ve provided instructions on page 156 from the Nail Manufacturers Council (NMC) and International Nail Technician’s Association (INTA). Be sure, however, to check your state board’s rules and regulations for proper techniques, as each state has its own guidelines.

When it comes to clients, don’t be afraid to talk to them about how your services are sanitary and safe. Schoon. “So if your feet are healthy, you’re likely not going to develop a fungal infection simply because you step on a fungal organism.” On the other hand, if a client has a fungal infection on the bottom of her foot and gets a pedicure, and the nail tech files her foot with an abrasive file, now the fungal organism is “in” the abrasive file. “If the next person sits down in the chair and a tech doesn’t bother cleaning the abrasive file and just starts filing on her foot, that tech is actually creating microscopic trauma to the bottom of the foot and can force

that organism to go into the skin,” says Schoon. “It’s like she’s planting it in her foot. That’s why it’s so important, especially for abrasives, to not reuse them unless they can be properly cleaned and disinfected.” Also, you may not realize it, but when you remove a client’s shoes and her feet look a little dirty, she might actually be transporting fecal material into your footspa. “Some of these people are incontinent, some people walk barefoot, some people have pets; they bring contaminated feet to the tub and then you circulate it in the tub,” says Robert

Spalding, DPM, president of Medinail Corporation with a private practice in Signal Mountain, Tennessee. Fecal matter carries E. coli. We know how bacteria, such as E. coli, can get into the tub, but what happens once it’s there? During a pedicure, as you exfoliate a client’s skin, a substrate (or foundation) builds up on the foot basin walls. “It’s like a lattice for things to attach onto,” explains Spalding. Keeping that surface squeaky clean is a two-part process and the only way to keep clients safe. “We’re talking about physical removal of scum, and then we’re talking about

Cleaning and Disinfecting

Pedicure Equipment

T

he following procedures are recommended for cleaning and disinfecting all types of pedicure equipment with moving parts, including whirlpool units, air-jetted basins and pipeless basins. In all cases described below, we recommend using an EPA registered hospital liquid disinfectant that describes itself as a bactericide, virucide and fungicide. Always record the time each cleaning procedure is performed in the salon pedicure cleaning log.

Whirlpool footspas and air-jet basins After every client:

1 2 3 4 5

Drain all water from the basin.

Scrub all visible residue from the inside walls of the basin with a brush and liquid soap and water. Use a clean and disinfected brush with a handle. Brushes must be cleaned and disinfected after each use. Rinse the basin with clean water. Refill the basin with clean water and circulate the correct amount (read the label for mixing instructions) of the EPA registered hospital disinfectant through the basin for 10 minutes. Drain, rinse and wipe dry with a clean paper towel.

At the end of every day: Remove the screen and any other removable parts (a screwdriver may be necessary) and then: Clean the screen and other removable parts and the area behind these with a brush and liquid soap and water to remove all visible residue and replace properly cleaned screen and other removable parts.

2

Fill the basin with warm water and chelating detergent (cleansers designed for use in hard water) and circulate the chelating detergent through the spa system for 5–10 minutes (follow manufacturer’s instructions). If excessive foaming occurs, discontinue circulation and let soak for the remainder of the 10 minutes. Drain the soapy solution and rinse the basin.

3 4 5 6

Refill the basin with clean water and circulate the correct amount (read the label for mixing instructions) of the EPA registered hospital disinfectant through the basin for 10 minutes. Drain, rinse and wipe dry with a clean paper towel. Allow the basin to dry completely.

At least once each week:

Do not drain the disinfectant solution. Turn off the unit and leave the disinfecting solution in the unit overnight. In the morning drain and rinse. Refill the basin with clean water and flush the system.

exposing it for a long enough period of time to hypochlorite, which is a typical, recommended product that acts as an antibacterial/antifungal.” It’s imperative that the skin that has stuck to that “lattice” on the basin wall be manually removed. “When the skin is exfoliating and you have surfactants in the water—which are basically detergents and/or whatever kind of soapy product that you put in the water— those all bind up and stick on the wall. They have … an ionic charge that sticks on the wall,” explains Spalding. The scummy, cell-ridden materials must be physically removed from the wall, and all the surfaces must be exposed to hypochlorite. “There is an affinity for surfaces with this kind of sticking material and if it’s not physically removed, then you’ve

got a problem. That includes the insides of the tubing. It includes the impellers and the surfaces of the tub.”

Set Clients at Ease Now that you know how the bacterial and fungal organisms can invade and stick to your footspa and basin, it’s easy to understand why proper cleaning and disinfecting of equipment is so important. And when it comes to clients, don’t be afraid to talk to them about how your services are sanitary and safe. “Clients are really, really afraid of this,” says Schoon. He recommends helping clients regain confidence in the salon industry by talking about how nail technicians today are trained to take precautions and uphold the highest cleaning standards.

“Right now large numbers of people that I speak to, who don’t work in the industry, are afraid of pedicures and wouldn’t go to get a pedicure—the people who aren’t afraid have nail technicians they can trust, who really give them reassurance and show them their pedicure log books and show them all the things they do and really go out of their way to ensure that those chairs are clean,” says Schoon. “If nail technicians understand that and really take this responsibility seriously and speak to the client about these issues and reassure them, it’s going to do the whole industry a big favor.” Ilona French has been an industry professional for more than 17 years. She also launched the beauty column, VenusVixen.com.

HEEL TO TOE I

T’S EASY TO SEE HOW PEDICURES CAN SEEM LIKE THE OFT-NEGLECTED STEPCHILD OF THE SALON WORLD.

Covered up for half the year, toes are rarely in the spotlight that brightly shines on fingertips. And despite the exploding popularity of nail art, it’s unusual to see Pinterest boards and nail blogs dedicated to polished feet. But there are also few pleasures quite as gratifying as a well-executed pedicure. When the shoes come off and a client sinks her tired feet into a warm, sudsy tub, the “ahhh” that follows is far more rewarding than a seasonal trend. With

summer nearly upon us, now is the time to reinvent your pedicure services: whether that means investing in new equipment, learning different massage techniques or working on your salon’s upselling skills. To start you off, we’ve rounded up some of the best files, scrubs, lotions, treatments and more in foot care—so when toes do get their moment in the spotlight, you’ll be ready.

Things That Go Bump Learn the differences between common lumps that may appear on the feet of your clients.

orns, calluses and warts...oh my! Unfortunately, quite a few unsightly lumps and bumps can appear on your clients’ feet—and though it’s not up to you as a nail tech to treat them, it does help to know what you’re dealing with. In this month’s Nail Clinic, we determine some of the most common skin-compromising concerns that you’ll run into at your salon and delineate their causes, symptoms and treatments so that you can protect the safety of your clients and yourself.

• Calluses form on the bottom of the foot; corns form on the top of the foot and between the toes. • Approximately 65 out of 1,000 people are afflicted with calluses or corns. • Corns or calluses affect more than twice as many women than men. • Of the 100 HPV types, about 60 types cause warts on areas such as the hands or feet. • HPV lives in the body’s epithelial cells, flat and thin cells found on the skin’s surface and in certain parts of the body. *Sources: Richard M. Corns typically appear on top of or in between toes; they’re a type of callus that forms due to a person’s underlying bone structure, reports Jacqueline Sutera, a doctor of podiatric medicine and surgery in private practice in New York and New Jersey. They frequently occur among those who have hammertoes, where the joints and bones are contracted, and are often caused by shoes that are too tight or adjacent toes that divert into each other. “You can have corns without hammertoes, but corns require friction or pressure to develop,” she adds. “There’s a biomechanical reason for them, and predisposition also factors in. If family members have them, you’re prone to them as well.” Corns manifest as thickened skin that is sometimes swollen, red or painful and, unlike calluses, they often have a central seed. Eliot Ghatan, a dermatologist in private practice in Brooklyn, New York, points out that they’re part of the body’s defense mechanisms against undue pressure, and

because feet can change their shape over the years, age can increase the likelihood of these unsightly bumps. In fact, Nia Terezakis, MD, a clinical professor at Tulane University and in private practice in New Orleans, wryly calls corns “birthday presents,” because as people get older, bones tend to grow spurs that press against skin, and corns develop to protect against this pressure. “Corns and calluses often appear on the joint of a toe or on the side of the big or little toe, and they’re

Callus Concerns Rebecca Baxt, a dermatologist in New Jersey and New York, notes that though calluses and corns both relate to thickened skin, calluses differ from corns because the latter often have a central core. Calluses appear on the soles of the feet and, though they are usually larger than corns, the two can look the same. Like corns, they’re a protective mechanism of the body and caused by pressure. When the foot doesn’t have enough cushioning for the propelling of steps, an extra pad forms to cushion the bone underneath, says Sutera. The pad can become thick, inflamed and very painful. If the source of pressure is removed, calluses can heal naturally, but the process typically takes a while, says Ghatan. Instead, clients with calluses should see a medical professional who can do a medical-grade skin-softening treatment and shave down the skin. Orthotics or pads to cushion the toes and prescription keratolytic cream with urea or lactic acid to soften and remove tough skin might also be helpful. But how should you approach this common thickened skin in the salon? Nail techs often feel a responsibility to ensure clients’ feet leave the salon soft and smooth, but they shouldn’t do anything that’s beyond their scope of practice like digging into the

ill-defined; they don’t have a sharp border,” she notes. “But when they cause pain, they can be a real problem. If your feet hurt, you’re disabled.” Treatments for corns can involve over-the-counter medications, but Sutera advises against these, since they contain acids that can eat away at surrounding healthy skin. Padding the area or wearing orthotics are safe, noninvasive options. In the most advanced cases—if the toes have become rigid—surgery can fix the underlying cause (contracture of the toes). “If the toe has corns but is still flexible, it’s not typically as painful, but as it progresses, a rigid deformity can occur where the toe is locked in position and doesn’t move very well,” explains Sutera. “We can reverse this surgically with a routine procedure that takes about 15 minutes, removing a small portion of the knuckle underneath the corn.” Terezakis advises her clients with less severe cases to file down the skin with an emery board every day or purchase a battery-operated filing instrument to smooth problems such as corns and calluses. Before starting any at-home treatment, though, Ghatan recommends a doctor’s visit not only to correctly diagnose the issue, but also to allow the doctor to shave or file down the skin so that the problem can be corrected more quickly.

to a doctor so you don’t put yourself or your other clients at risk, because the virus can be spread through foot tubs or instruments,” she advises. “Warts need to be treated and clients shouldn’t selfdiagnose!” In-office, a medical professional can shave down the skin, treat with a salicylic acid-based medication, use freezing techniques or lasers, or surgically excise the wart. But, again, viruses attach to a person’s DNA, so in times of stress or when the immune system is lowered, warts can return.

the issue appropriately. skin, which is never OK. For clients with calluses, Sutera advises techs to simply perform a light filing with a pumice stone or foot file, making sure the implement is the client’s own or 100% sterilized; the client can repeat the process at home after showering a few times per week. Clients who are elderly or who have vascular/ circulation problems, diabetes or thin skin, should never perform at-home treatments or receive in-salon care for corns or calluses; they must remain under a doctor’s supervision because of their increased risk of infection.

Warts may appear as just another unsightly bump on the skin, but they shouldn’t be taken lightly. Warts can be highly contagious and often spread in high-traffic areas like gyms or salons. Plus, they stick with a person for life. “Warts are caused by a virus and we have no cures for viruses, no 100% treatment,” says Terezakis. “Even if you burn, freeze or cut them off, they may come back.” These viruses get under skin and create their own blood supply, eventually causing warts, which often have a cauliflower appearance, says Sutera. “I’d tell nail techs not to treat these clients and send them

Often, says Terezakis, even doctors can’t tell if a growth is a callus, corn or wart until the skin’s surface is pared down. With warts, paring down is a necessary first step before applying medicines for removal (this allows the medicine to reach the active part of the wart). “Warts have blood vessels that go up vertically and curl down like spaghetti, so we’ll see whirls of tissue that make a mosaic,” she explains. “When you trim down a wart, you see a structure, whereas after paring down a callus or corn, you find smooth, even material.” Hence, when in doubt, it’s a good idea for a nail tech to refer a client who has any suspect bump on her skin to a doctor. The issue could be something more serious, such as paronychia (a skin infection), bone spurs or even skin cancer. “Any problem a nail tech sees should be referred to a doctor,” emphasizes Baxt. “Nail professionals aren’t equipped to deal with medical skin issues.” You and your clients should never overlook an abnormality on skin; encourage a medical professional to diagnose and treat the issue appropriately. Surprise Hue: Electric Blue! OUI, OUI!

French actress Marion Cotillard stepped out in Paris for the Fall 2013 Christian Dior show, and though she kept her fashion palette mostly black and white, her nails popped with a few coats of blinding blue polish, proving that this bold hue can be a sophisticated lacquer choice.

2013

Cutting-edge Rock Hard Nails WHEN GARAGE LEAD SINGER Shirley Manson popped by to enjoy a full set of Artistic Nail Design Rock Hard Nail tips in Syndey, Australia, nail tech Zoe Vokis couldn’t believe how much Manson looked like the model in the nail enhancements ad. Of the serendipitous meet up with her doppelganger, Vokis says, “Shirley absolutely loved it!” As for Manson’s nails, Vokis finished them with a coat of Artistic Nail Design Colour Gloss in Sultry, a vibrant redorange shade that seemingly glowed in the dark on stage.

ot surprisingly, most of Tinseltown’s ladies played it pretty straight with their nails at the 85th Annual Academy Awards, but one lacquer job stood out from the rest: Jennifer Hudson’s blue-based gray. Nail circles chattered about it, but nobody knew the hue. Turns out, Bones actor David Boreanaz had his hand in the stunning varnish choice. He told People magazine that the color, Hard to Get, is from his polish line Chrome Girl, which he and his wife created with family friend Melissa Ravo and her husband. Boreanaz and Hudson share an agent and, Shirley Manson seeing an opportuperforms with nity, the agent linked the two Garage live at the Star Event together. The rest, as they say, Centre in Sydney, is red carpet history!
