Serious Fun, een van de publicaties uit deze voorjaarsaanbieding, vormt het derde deel, na cartoons en films, van een trilogie over alternatieve vormen van architectuurrepresentatie. Auteur Mélanie van der Hoorn ontleedt architectuurspelen, zowel digitaal als ‘analoog’, en de mogelijkheden van spel en ‘playfulness’ als instrumenten voor de representatie van architectuur en stedenbouw. Het concept ‘fun’ mag in een wereld van hele en halve lockdowns, klimaatstress, geopolitieke spanningen en groeiende ongelijkheid bijna als een anachronisme klinken – de serieuze kanten van spel en de ‘fun’ van het scheppen zijn relevante onderwerpen voor een wereld die heel hard creatieve oplossingen nodig heeft.

Serious Fun is the title of one of the publications in this spring catalogue – the final part of a trilogy about alternative forms of architectural representation that also includes cartoons and films. In this study, author Mélanie van der Hoorn dissects architecture games, both digital and analogue, and discusses the possibilities of play and playfulness as tools for representations of architecture and urban design. The concept of ‘fun’ may sound like an anachronism in today’s world of full and partial lockdowns, climate stress, geopolitical tensions and growing inequality. The ‘seriousness’ of play, however, and the ‘fun’ of creating are relevant topics for a world that desperately needs creative solutions.

Aan ‘serious fun’ geen gebrek op de foto (op pagina 8 van deze catalogus) van vijf vrouwen tijdens een college van interieurarchitect Cora Nicolai uit 1957, beeldmerk van een nieuw initiatief van nai010, Vrouwen in architectuur, dat de rol en positie van vrouwen en andere onderbelichte stemmen in de architectuurgeschiedenis wil boekstaven. Met dit initiatief wil onze uitgeverij, samen met een team van onderzoekers, auteurs en instellingen uit het architectuurveld, zowel het eigen fonds verrijken en corrigeren alsook bijdragen aan de ontwikkeling van de architectuurgeschiedenis en -theorie vanuit het perspectief van ondergerepresenteerde groepen. Mag deze foto als een toonbeeld van kracht, talent en toewijding gezien worden, een vrijwel contemporaine foto (pagina 20) in deze catalogus, onderdeel van een publicatie over luchtwachttorens in Nederland ten tijde van de Koude Oorlog, toont de wereld waartegen deze vrouwen moesten opboksen. Maar liefst twaalf vrouwen zijn er te zien, bezig met het verwerken van (gesimuleerde) gegevens over vijandelijke vliegtuigen boven Nederland, ten behoeve van drie vanaf een balkon toekijkende mannen. Het kan misschien gevaarlijk zijn om al te veel op deze foto te projecteren, navrant is het verschil in positie – letterlijk en figuurlijk – ondertussen wel.

There’s no shortage of ‘fun’ in the photo of five (visible) women during a lecture by interior architect Cora Nicolai in 1957 (page 8 of this catalogue). This image features in the logo of a new initiative by nai010, Women in Architecture, which explores the role and position of women and other underexposed voices in architecture history and writing. With this initiative, nai010, together with a team of researchers, authors and institutions from within the field of architecture, want to expand, correct and enrich both its own list as well as architecture history and theory by focussing on the perspectives of under-represented voices and groups. If this photo may be seen as a display of strength, talent and dedication, a quasi-contemporary photo (page 20) from this same catalogue reflects the societal context these women were up against. As many as 12 women can be seen processing data about (simulated) Cold War enemy aircraft positions over the Netherlands, for the benefit of three men watching from a balcony above them. Part of a publication (Dutch only) about military observation towers in the Netherlands during the Cold War, it may be historically hazardous to project too much on this image, but the difference in position of the men and women in the picture – literally and figuratively – is as telling as it is disconcerting.

Meer tegendraadse speelsheid biedt de publicatie Boundless Minds & Moving Bodies over de samenwerking tussen danser en choreograaf Muna Tseng, fotograaf Tseng Kwong Chi en graffity artist Keith Haring in de legendarische New Yorkse kunstscene van de jaren tachtig. Hoe hard en rauw die wereld ook was, ze bood ook ruimte aan openheid, experiment en uitwisseling. Het kan een hart onder de riem zijn voor hedendaagse kunstenaars en ontwerpers – en hun publiek – dat deze ontwerpers en kunstenaars de beperkingen van hun omgeving als creatieve uitgangspunten namen, en uitdrukking gaven aan zowel de ervaren werkelijkheid als aan een mogelijke, alternatieve wereld. Een creatieve onderneming die zowel angstaanjagend als bevrijdend kan zijn. Klinkt als serious fun.

More contrarian playfulness is on offer in Boundless Minds & Moving Bodies, a publication highlighting the collaboration between dancer and choreographer Muna Tseng, photographer Tseng Kwong Chi and graffiti artist Keith Haring in the legendary New York art scene of the early 1980s. Their work and interactions reveal a shared performative energy of the joys of experimentation, openness, exchange and social engagement. Contemporary artists and designers – and their audiences – can take comfort, it is hoped, from the fact that these designers and artists took the challenges and limitations of their situation and environment as creative starting points to express both an experienced reality as well as possible, alternative worlds. A creative undertaking that can be both terrifying and exhilarating. Sounds like serious fun.

With this first publication series Women in Architecture and public programme, nai010 publishers intends to fill the gap in your bookcase and highlight unrepresented voices in architecture.

De eerste publicatie van de serie verschijnt in het najaar van 2022. Deze eerste publicatie vult historische hiaten over vrouwen in architectuur van 1870 tot vandaag. Naast essays over de positie van vrouwen in de architectuur- en ontwerppraktijk zal deze publicatie vijf onbekende of weggeschreven stemmen belichten, en vijf hedendaagse projecten die meerstemmigheid in de architectuur voorop stellen uitdiepen. Zo vormen vrouwelijke en andere onderbelichte rolmodellen uit het verleden een inspiratiebron voor het heden en krijgen hedendaagse rolmodellen een podium om op hun beurt een inspiratiebron te vormen voor de toekomst.

The first publication in the series, which will appear in the autumn of 2022, will bridge historical gaps concerning women in architecture from 1870 to the present. In addition to essays on the position of women in architecture and design practice, this publication will also highlight five unknown or omitted voices and explore five contemporary projects that prioritize multivoicing in architecture. Female and other underexposed role models from the past function as an inspiration for the present and contemporary role models are given a platform to be an inspiration for the future.

In nineteenth-century monumental art museums, the transition from city to museum interior was dramatized. Climbing the stairs of Schinkel’s Altes Museum in Berlin or traversing the pergola between the ponds in Berlage’s Kunstmuseum in The Hague urges visitors to leave the everyday world behind. The post-war, ‘barrier-free’ museum, with squares and streets inside and out, seems to want to abolish this city-museum boundary. At the same time, other internal boundaries are being revised, namely those between front stage and backstage. Depots are being made accessible and visitors can now take a look inside restoration studios.

Museums not only facilitate encounters among visitors, objects and stories, but they also facilitate the staging of these visits. They organize tours of the exhibition spaces as well as provide additional publicly accessible spaces, including entrances, corridors, auditoriums and museum cafés.

In recent decades, the field of architecture has witnessed a fundamental shift under the banner of ‘ecology’: from the innovation in energy technologies to the use of circular materials and climate-neutral building solutions – today, more than ever, the construction of a building seems to be dominated by an ecological awareness. At the same time, such sustainable thinking often places ecological questions outside of the design itself, in the hands of experts and within the logic of quantitative calculation, while the building disappears into the ephemerality of life cycles and network models. By focusing on the intersection between ecology and aesthetics in architecture, however, this issue of OASE situates the thinking about such issues at the heart of the discipline. It asks: how do ecological questions materialise in architecture? And what aesthetic practices are able to shape the perception of these ecological questions? Through a series of concrete projects, the contributions in this issue explore the field of tension between architectural aesthetics and issues of energy, technology and materiality. Ecological practices in architecture must not only be effective in providing solutions, but inevitably raise questions of beauty, affection and perception as well.

In 2014 ging IBA Parkstad van start. Door soms fijnmazige, soms ingrijpende stedelijke en landelijke ingrepen, werd de transformatie van dit gebied versneld en de samenhang van regiopolitaan Parkstad – het patchwork - vergroot.

Patchwork IBA Parkstad presenteert inspirerende projecten van Piet Oudolf, Francine Houben en beschouwingen van o.a. Jo Coenen en Dirk Sijmons over helende landschappen en onvolgroeide steden. Wie Rotterdam zegt, denkt aan bouwen. Na het vernietigende bombardement van 14 mei 1940 werd de stad letterlijk opnieuw opgebouwd. De wederopbouw is al vier dagen na het bombardement in gang gezet, toen stadsarchitect Witteveen opdracht kreeg een wederopbouwplan te maken. Aan den slag! Daarom viert Rotterdam op 18 mei Opbouwdag. Op 18 mei 1947 was de eerste Opbouwdag, dus in 2022 viert Rotterdam 75 jaar wederopbouw.

Luchtwachttorens uit de Koude Oorlog geeft een compleet beeld van het landelijke netwerk van luchtwachttorens waarin tussen 1950 en 1968 duizenden vrijwilligers in weer en wind het luchtruim afzochten naar vijandelijke Russische vliegtuigen. Een nationaal netwerk dat een taak vervulde binnen de internationale luchtverdediging van West-Europa. Van de bijna 300 objecten zijn er nog 70 bewaard gebleven: betonnen torens, bakstenen uitkijkposten en commandocentra. De door architect Marten Zwaagstra ontworpen betonnen raatbouwtorens vormen architectonische getuigen van de Koude Oorlog. Hun constructie uit prefab beton is typerend voor de wederopbouw in de jaren vijftig. Het boek vertelt ook het verhaal van de waarnemers op de torens, van de vele gewone burgers, mannen én vrouwen, die bij de verdediging en bescherming van ons land betrokken waren. Het boek stopt niet bij de buitengebruikstelling van de torens in 1968, maar beschrijft ook de gebeurtenissen erna, van sloop tot creatief hergebruik. Persoonlijke anekdotes en verhalen van ooggetuigen brengen de historie van de resterende torens tot leven. De vele historische en hedendaagse foto’s, bouwtekeningen en kaarten vormen een uitgebreid beeldverhaal. Tot slot is een catalogus van alle ooit gebouwde objecten met type en huidige staat opgenomen. Historisch geograaf Sandra van Lochem deed jarenlang onderzoek naar luchtwachttorens. Ze werkt als erfgoedspecialist bij Natuurmonumenten en publiceert regelmatig over Koude Oorlog-onderwerpen, buitenplaatsen en landschappelijk erfgoed.

Sinds de introductie van de bekende gele treinkleur in 1968 ontdekte NS het belang van design voor het spoorbedrijf. Twee jaar later werd de afdeling NS Design opgericht, die tot 2015 in verschillende gedaanten 33 materieelprojecten zou ontwerpen voor de Nederlandse Spoorwegen. De auteur van dit boek, Niels Greif, kwam er na een studie industriële vormgeving bij de oprichting in 1970 in dienst. Als ontwerper was hij bijna vijf decennia betrokken bij NS en maakte alles mee, van het eerste ontwerp, het ‘Treinstel 1970’, tot roemruchte dossiers als de Fyra (als ontwerp een buitengewoon succesvol product), en van de beroemde Loc 6400 tot het nooit gerealiseerde spectaculaire ontwerp voor een VIP Car uit 1990.

Treinen ontwerpen omvat alle 33 projecten die de afdeling NS Design heeft gemaakt, ook de nooit uitgevoerde, vanuit de eerste hand verteld en op basis van oorspronkelijke ontwerpen, illustraties en documenten. Greif documenteert daarnaast ook hoe de erkenning van het nieuwe vakgebied werd bevochten op de gevestigde machten binnen het spoorwegbedrijf (vooral de ingenieurs en technici die treinenbouw beschouwden als hun exclusieve domein), welke positie design had in de organisatie, en vooral, hoe de treinontwerpen tot stand kwamen. Het resultaat is hét definitieve boek over treinontwerp bij de Nederlandse Spoorwegen, door de man die alles heeft meegemaakt.

Vincent Mentzel Foto's

Bijna veertig jaar was Vincent Mentzel (1945) de staffotograaf van NRC Handelsblad: hij bracht het nieuws letterlijk in beeld. Mentzel ontwikkelde zich tot een van Nederlands bekendste fotografen, vooral door zijn vernieuwende verslaggeving van de Haagse politiek. Met zijn sprekende portretten van politici en informele fotoreportages van het Binnenhof maakte hij de Nederlandse politiek voor veel lezers persoonlijker en menselijker.

Als fotojournalist reisde hij de wereld rond om politieke gebeurtenissen en andere nieuwsfeiten vast te leggen. Van studentenprotesten in China tot Surinaamse parlementsverkiezingen: vrijheid, democratie en macht bleven ook in zijn buitenlandse reportages terugkerende thema’s. Vincent Mentzel. Foto’s geeft niet alleen inzicht in de belangrijke rol die Mentzel speelde in de fotojournalistiek, maar biedt ook een herkenbaar fotografisch overzicht van onze recente geschiedenis.

Art & Project Een geschiedenis Art & Project A History De Amsterdamse galerie Art & Project (1968-2001) was ruim 33 jaar het brandpunt voor de ontwikkeling van hedendaagse kunst in Nederland en ver daarbuiten. Oprichters Adriaan van Ravesteijn (19382015) en Geert van Beijeren (1933-2005) brachten een baanbrekend programma met werk van zowel nationale als internationale kunstenaars. Marinus Boezem, Stanley Brouwn, Jan Dibbets, Charlotte Posenenske, Gilbert&George, Lawrence Weiner en Sol LeWitt zijn onderdeel van de indrukwekkende lijst kunstenaars die verbonden waren aan de galerie. Om de tentoonstellingen onder de aandacht te brengen brachten Van Beijeren en Van Ravesteijn in totaal 156 zogenaamde bulletins uit. Al snel groeiden de bulletins uit tot een experimenteel medium. Het waren de dragers van de ideeën van conceptuele kunstenaars en fungeerden soms zelf als conceptuele kunstwerken.

Art & Project: een geschiedenis brengt de historie en invloed van de galerie in kaart. Daarbij worden de tentoonstellingen, bulletins, het sociale netwerk rond de galerie en de invloed in de (inter)nationale kunstwereld vanuit diverse invalshoeken benaderd. Dit vuistdikke boek is mede door uitgebreid onderzoek en nooit eerder gepubliceerd (beeld)materiaal een onmisbaar overzicht in de geschiedenis van de hedendaagse kunst in Nederland.

The Amsterdam gallery Art & Project (19682001) was pivotal to the development of contemporary art in the Netherlands and beyond for more than 33 years. Founders Adriaan van Ravesteijn (1938-2015) and Geert van Beijeren (1933-2005) presented a pioneering programme of work by both national and international artists. Marinus Boezem, Stanley Brouwn, Jan Dibbets, Charlotte Posenenske, Gilbert&George, Lawrence Weiner and Sol LeWitt are on the impressive list of artists associated with the gallery. Van Beijeren and Van Ravesteijn published a total of 156 bulletins to draw attention to their exhibitions. The bulletins quickly became an experimental medium: they became the carriers of conceptual artists’ ideas and sometimes even functioned as conceptual works of art, themselves.

Art & Project: A History captures the history and influence of this gallery. The book approaches the exhibitions, bulletins and the social network surrounding the gallery and its influence on the (inter)national art scene from various angles. Thanks to extensive research and previously unpublished (visual) material, this hefty book provides an indispensable overview of the history of contemporary art in the Netherlands.

Moving Lines presents an intimate visual journey through the early collaborations between Keith Haring, Muna Tseng, and Tseng Kwong Chi. It offers a unique and colorful prism of the three friends in their orbits, expressing themselves through different disciplinary languages: drawing, dance and photography. Their work and interactions reveal a shared performative energy of the joys of experimentation, openness, exchange and social engagement. Together, and independently, they were immersed in and contributors to the bustling and vibrant cultural downtown scene. This book features the 1982 collaboration by Keith Haring to create the set and visuals for choreographer Muna Tseng drawing a visual score for her performance piece Epochal Songs. Muna’s brother, conceptual photographer Tseng Kwong Chi, was a close friend and collaborator with Keith. Tseng's photographs of Haring’s work in the subways, on the streets and during public engagements continue to make them accessible to audiences across the globe. Next to the work of Keith and Muna, the publication introduces Tseng Kwong Chi’s own body of seminal work: the famous self-portrait series, East Meets West, while visiting many iconic tourist sites across the world during his travels together with Haring.
