Architectural Restyling
San Martino
Arianna Moliterni (Senior Architect), Isaac Scaramella (Energy Engineer)
Worked on the project’s concept, design, material selection, and detailing.
Given the prestigious urban context, it was decided to set up the architectural redevelopment project starting from the image of the building in the context of insertion. In line with one of the main streets of the historic core, a vanishing point of the urban landscape at the gates of the medieval city, the building is a legible sign of demarcation of the border between the historic core and the first urban ring road. The idea is to restyle the building architecturally to enhance its appearance, increase real estate value, and provide more well-being and comfort for occupants while reducing energy consumption and costs (30%–50%).

The Master Planning epitomizes the principles of creating a design that exudes openness, maximized greens induced with sensitive landscaping and an unprejudiced approach in planning that caters to one and all. The high rise Towers placed at appropriate distances from each other allows both visual and physical connection between the site and beyond. Seven such towers are placed along the periphery of the site with a large expanse of landscaped green within. Contemporary manifestations of the traditional ‘jaali’ pattern are used uniquely in balcony railings, as shading devices or at places, to achieve privacy besides becoming a prominent feature in the buildings. The landscape in the project is conceptualized to integrate the built with the open, the inside with the outside, the visual and the aesthetic, with the utilitarian. A harmonious blend of various landscaping aspects/ elements is perceived with each adopted in the right proportion.

Urban Planning and Environmental Design
Individual Work
As a consequence of this long-lasting marble extraction activity, the Carrara landscape and society reshaped. A series of environmental and social problems occurred, white water in Carione river, the population loss and more abandoned quarries and factories. Besides, the high disturbance of human activities of mineral extraction requires a lot of effort of restoration both on environment and landscape.
Considering available resources and the scenic quality of the site, the proposal is concentrated on the institution of a Quarry Park, promoting soft mobility axis connections and strategic projects to attract wide users target and to start new sustainable regenerative mechanisms. An initiative which helps the city exit out of its existing mono culture loop-hole of marble quarrying and focus on various other aspects for country’s rolling economy and environment protection in long run.

THREE MAIN RESULTS OF THIS SCENARIO:
1. The environmental safety which opens up the possibility of a safe and balanced environment.
2. The enhancement of the Vara bridges from the landscape point of view.
3. The regeneration of a local biodiversity that can bring the endemic species of the Apuan Alps to continuously settle in their ‘mother territory’ eliminating the danger of their disappearance.

Urban Transformation and Architectural Design
Wissam
Eid, Niloufar Kiarostami
On the Mediterranean coast, between Barcelona and Badalona lies the last kilometer of non-urbanized coastline within the urban continuum between Sitges and Mataró: Sant Adrià de Besòs, the place of residence of a unique and iconic building. The old thermo-electric power station, locally known as “Las tres chimeneas”, was commissioned in the early 1970s to respond to the growing need for electricity, built within an urban area in strong expansion. It constitutes the last piece of a series of interventions planned by the authorities in charge, aimed at redeveloping the “waterfront” of the entire metropolitan area of Barcelona.
38
La Plaça, meaning “square” in Catalan, refers to the most important part of this project which is the pedestrian friendly spaces designed in two directions: one is the main spine of the project which used to be the former Maristany avenue, now as a multimodal hub; the other is the piazza designed between the two museums (3x & the new museum designed on the northern part). The concept is to make the area a pedestrian friendly space while redesigning the transportation network. Referring to the three keywords used in this project, 1. Green mobility, 2. Interface, 3. Social inclusion, the area around the 3x is no more isolated and welcomes people by providing adequate means of public and pedestrian friendly infrastructures. On the other hand, adding new residential complexes with underground commercial facilities increases social inclusion and brings more life to the project. The railway which was the main obstacle crossing in middle of the site, is not a concern anymore, thanks to the underground train tunnel and train station. Also, the tram line, which was disconnected before reaching the site, is now crossing under the chimneys and is extended to reach the other side of the project.

Bangalore is known as the silicon valley of India because of its pre-eminent position as the nation’s leading IT employer and exporter. The city is home to numerous public sector, heavy industries, software companies, IT gaints, aerospace, telecommunications and defence organization. The climate of the city remains pleasant and mild throughtout the year. The site is situated adjacent to the Kempagowda International Airport. Total area designed for the convention centre is 35 acres , out of the total area of the proposed garden city project of 405 acres.
Design
The design of the International Convention Center draws inspiration from the traditional silk weaving industry. The architectural ground plane weaves together built & landscaped elements to create a tapestry of spaces and experiences. This ground plane includes entrance plazas, landscaped courtyards, and gardens, providing the platform for the array of events and spectacles that the Center offers. It connects the hotel with the Center, the entrance plaza to events within the buildings, and the exhibition center to the garden beyond. The architectural concept is based on layering and weaving, which combines the large volumes of elements of the convention center longitudinally into one another. This approach allows for generous open space & landscaped areas on the site. At ground level, the interplay of open & enclosed spaces creates a rich experiential fabric, maximizing daylight & offering breathing space amidst busy programmed areas.

After seeing the interesting neighbourhoods there, they decided to park their rented car and resume their trip by walking; but it turned out to be a miserable experience! Asking why? Well!
