Dear Friends, On behalf of Billy Ocasio, Chairman of the Board of Trustees; the entire Norwegian American Hospital Board of Trustees; Elizabeth Colón, Chair of the Norwegian American Hospital Foundation; and the members of the Foundation Board of Directors, it is my honor and privilege to welcome you to the 2020 Power of Community Virtual Gala.

To our long-time donors, sponsors and friends, thank you for believing in our mission to provide the best and most compassionate healthcare to the Humboldt Park community and surrounding neighborhoods. To our new donors and those joining us for the first time, a very special welcome to our Norwegian American Hospital family. We are grateful for the support and your presence.

We gather this evening in a new, virtual format because the COVID-19 global pandemic has changed every aspect of our lives. The pandemic has put a spotlight on the racial and health inequities that impact the lives of people of color in our community and society. Minorities have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19, becoming ill and dying at alarming rates. Latinos have the highest rate of infection in our community and throughout Illinois.

Since the beginning of the pandemic in March, our healthcare workers and staff on the front-lines have bravely and selflessly cared for the critically ill patients who rapidly filled our hospital to capacity. We have a dedicated team of healthcare providers and support staff who come to work every day. We salute their commitment and are pleased to acknowledge their service this evening with the Community Healthcare Heroes Award.

This year we have a special Challenge Grant from an anonymous donor. This generous donor will match dollar-for-dollar, up to $50,000, all new or increased gifts to the Virtual Gala. If we meet this goal, the result will be $100,000 for the Norwegian American Hospital COVID -19 Response Fund. Thank you for helping us to meet this Challenge!

C H A LLEN G E G RA NT 2 0 2 0 An anonymous donor has offered a special Challenge Grant to honor the hard work and commitment of Norwegian American Hospital’s front-line healthcare providers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This generous donor will match dollar-fordollar, up to $50,000, all new or increased gifts made during the Virtual Gala. All Gala proceeds will fund the Norwegian American Hospital COVID-19 Response Fund.

If we meet the Challenge Grant goal of $50,000, the donor will match that amount with $50,000. The result will be $100,000 to purchase essential personal protective equipment, supplies, and other critical resources for our staff and patients.​

Dear Friends and Colleagues, Thank you all for being here tonight for this unique Power of Community online experience.

I want to send a special word of appreciation to José R. Sánchez, President and CEO of Norwegian American Hospital, and our dedicated Foundation Board members for once again producing an extraordinary event which will help fund one of our most critical needs right now: the Hospital’s COVID-19 Response Fund.

As Chair of the Board of Norwegian American Hospital, I am so appreciative to all of you for being with us for this Virtual Gala—a new format for a new time. Thank you to our long-time sponsors and donors whose belief in our mission has helped us remain a strong and constant source of health and healing for the Humboldt Park community. Thanks to you, we have been able to adapt to these new and challenging circumstances brought by the coronavirus. Dear Guests, Who could have imagined that our 6th Annual Power of Community Gala would pivot into a virtual event? Tonight’s event is no exception; the need is greater than ever before for the Norwegian American Hospital family. The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic caused hospitals to shift their priorities overnight, leaving safety nets hospitals such as Norwegian to address a virus new to all of us.

After ten years of being on the board, there are never enough words to express my thanks and gratitude to the sponsors, donors and individuals who are here this evening. If this is your first time or your sixth time joining us, we want you to know how much we appreciate your support, because without you, none of this would be possible! To the Foundation Board members, thank you for your passion, leadership and commitment these past few years. Community Impact Award

Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot Since assuming office on May 20, 2019 following her historic election, Mayor Lightfoot has undertaken an ambitious agenda of expanding opportunity and inclusive economic growth across Chicago’s neighborhoods and communities, with early accomplishments including historic ethics and good governance reforms, worker protection legislation, and closing a record $838 million budget gap, as well as key investments in education, public safety and financial stability. Mayor Lightfoot also placed Chicago on the path to a $15 minimum wage by 2021. Prior to her election, Mayor Lightfoot most recently served as a senior equity partner in the Litigation and Conflict Resolution Group at Mayer Brown. Previously, she served as President of the Chicago Police Board, as well as the Chair of the Police Accountability Task Force.

A native of Massillon, Ohio, Mayor Lightfoot has been a resident of Chicago since 1986 and lives on the Near Northwest Side with her wife Amy Eshleman and their daughter. presenter

José R. Sánchez José R. Sánchez, President and Chief Executive Officer of Norwegian American Hospital, is a senior health care executive with over 30 years of experience in operational, strategic and fiscal management of multi-faceted health care systems, and Chicago’s only Latino CEO since he arrived in 2010. Norwegian American Hospital is a highly distinguished Safety Net Hospital and under the leadership of Mr. Sánchez, the hospital has maintained financial stability and growth throughout his tenure.

Besides consistently exceeding national benchmarks in quality, Mr. Sánchez successfully orchestrated oversight of the hospital’s preparation for survey by The Joint Commission three times. Moreover, the hospital was recently surveyed and accredited by DNV GL Healthcare in January 2020. A major renovation of the hospital has just been completed that offers our employees, patients and visitors a more vibrant and welcoming experience.

David Doebler David Doebler is the President and General Manager of NBC 5 Chicago WMAQ and Telemundo Chicago WSNS. A broadcast industry veteran, David Doebler has more than 25 years of local television experience.

Mr. Doebler has a strong commitment to the community.

Under his leadership, stations in three television markets have launched branded community initiatives committed to positive and inspirational storytelling within newscasts. The most recent initiative, Making A Difference at NBC 5 Chicago and Telemundo Chicago, has produced thousands of uplifting stories and interviews with an interactive digital presence, and created two robust boards of hundreds of leaders from the Chicago area committed to problem-solving and community service.

Mr. Doebler has received numerous recognitions for his philanthropic efforts and currently serves on the board of Chicago’s Puerto Rican Arts Alliance and has sat on the Boards of the Urban League, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the United Way, among many others. He and his wife live in the Chicago area and their two adult children make frequent visits to the Windy City. presenter

Bishop Horace E. Smith, MD Bishop Horace E. Smith, MD, is a man gifted with a passion for God’s Word coupled with a love for God’s people. He has a contagious spirit of generosity that overflows in every facet of his life. As senior pastor of the Apostolic Faith Church and an attending physician specializing in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Memorial Hospital, Dr. Horace E. Smith has treated bodies and souls for three decades.

Bishop Smith was born and raised on the south side of Chicago. He graduated as an honor student from Lindblom High School and went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science Degree (with honors) at Chicago State University, and an MD from University of Illinois Medical Center. Bishop Smith and his wife, Susan, have three daughters and six grandchildren.

Community Advocate Award

Luis A. Miranda Jr. Luis A. Miranda Jr. is Founding Partner of The MirRam Group, a government affairs, lobbying and political consulting firm in New York City. He has previously served in three New York City mayoral administrations.

Mr. Miranda is the Founding President of the Hispanic Federation and past chair of the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation. He is board chair of the Latino Victory Fund and the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance and a board member of The Public Theater, NYC & Company, and the nonprofit The City. He chairs the advisory boards to Broadway League’s Viva Broadway, and the Caribbean and Latin American Studies Department at the CUNY Graduate Center.

Mr. Miranda and his family have supported the relief efforts in Puerto Rico following the destruction of Hurricane Maria in September 2017. They have actively fundraised for the Hispanic Federation’s UNIDOS for Puerto Rico program, raising over $43M to date for community organizations throughout the island. In honor of HAMILTON’s historic run in Puerto Rico in 2019, the Miranda family, the producers of HAMILTON, and the Flamboyan Foundation have partnered to create the Flamboyan Arts Fund, with the goal of raising $15 million dollars for arts and culture on the island. Most recently, he has been focused on COVID-19 relief efforts, acting as chair of New York-Presbyterian Hospital’s Northern Manhattan Emergency Recovery Fund serving small businesses in the neighborhood, and partnering with the Hispanic Federation to create the HF Emergency Assistance Fund for immigrant-focused community-based nonprofits.

Mr. Miranda and his wife Dr. Luz Towns-Miranda have been married for 42 years and have two adult children, Luz Miranda-Crespo and Lin-Manuel Miranda. They reside in the Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights/Inwood.

Mary Santana In 1995, Mary A. Santana, Founder and Executive Director of The Miracle Center, realized that many children in her neighborhood had untapped potential.

With this decision nearly 25 years ago, Mary embarked on a journey towards turning her desire into reality and The Miracle Center (TMC) was created.

Today, The Miracle Center is a vibrant non-profit organization whose success is driven by a visionary leader and a diverse team of experienced staff and volunteers.

Spanning over a decade of work, TMC has serviced over 25,000 children, youth and their families. Those children have become successful college graduates, career-driven individuals and instrumental contributors to the success of TMC today.

She is supported ceaselessly by her husband Bennett Santana, CEO/President of Business Staffing of America; her daughters Alissa and Rachel, and by the TMC inspiration, son Adrian, now 36 years old. Her motivation rises above in the mist of adversity; it is about ensuring that this message of hope will impact many more youth and their families, leaving behind a powerful legacy.

Norwegian American Hospital Front-Line Healthcare Workers Norwegian American Hospital front-line healthcare workers include staff members in many departments, all of whom who come to work every day to keep patients safe and to care for members of our community. Our doctors, nurses, medical assistants, housekeepers, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, transporters, lab techs, food service workers and support staff—everyone gave their all to care for our most vulnerable patients during the darkest days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lin-Manuel Miranda Lin-Manuel Miranda is a Pulitzer Prize, Grammy, Emmy and Tony award-winning composer, lyricist and actor.

He is the creator and original star of Broadway’s Tonywinning Hamilton and In the Heights. His additional Broadway credits include Bring It On: The Musical (co-composer/co-lyricist, Tony nomination for Best Musical), and West Side Story (2009 revival, Spanish translations). He is the recipient of the 2015 MacArthur Foundation Award and the 2018 Kennedy Center Honors.

He received an Emmy Award with Tom Kitt for their song, “Bigger” from the 67th Annual Tony Awards.

Mr. Miranda’s TV/Film credits include His Dark Materials, Fosse/Verdon, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Curb Your Enthusiasm (2018 Emmy Nomination, Guest Actor), Saturday Night Live (2017 Emmy Nomination, Guest Actor), Sesame Street, The Electric Company, House, DuckTales, 200 Cartas, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, Moana (2017 Oscar and Golden Globe nominations, Grammy Award for Best Original Song) and Mary Poppins Returns (2019 Golden Globe Nomination, Best Actor).

The Miracle Center For 24 years, The Miracle Center (TMC) has used Arts (dance, theater, music, multimedia, production) as a catalyst for personal growth, mental health, leadership development, academic advancement and community engagement. TMC’s academically and culturally enriched performance-based programming impacts youth and their families by instilling confidence—the catalyzing agent that stimulates behavioral and social change. The After-School Program, TMC’s flagship program, impacts over 500 youth annually by providing after-school and summer programming for youth ages 11-24. The Adult Ensemble, created in 2015, provides life-long learning opportunities for TMC graduates and community artists to engage professionalquality productions. Over 20,000 participants, families, and patrons have been impacted by TMC’s dedication to excellence, creativity and choice.

Zoraida Sambolin Zoraida Sambolin, an Emmy winning journalist, is the Weekday Edition co-anchor of NBC 5 News Today. She rejoined Chicago’s morning team in March of 2013 after spending two years as co-anchor of CNN‘s Early Start.

While at CNN Ms. Sambolin covered numerous breaking news stories including the Colorado Theatre shootings, the Boston bombings and the Cleveland kidnappings, and she field-anchored the Newtown Connecticut school massacre. In April of 2012, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and chose to return to her hometown of Chicago explaining to her colleagues and viewers at CNN that “tomorrow is not promised.”

Ms. Sambolin originally joined WMAQ in the summer of 2002 and began reporting for Telemundo the following year. As the first Chicago on-air broadcaster to work at both English and Spanish language stations simultaneously, she broke new ground for Latinos in the number three market in the country.

In addition to volunteering for numerous organizations, she has a special interest in raising awareness about breast cancer in underserved communities. Ms. Sambolin lives in Chicago with her husband Ken Williams and her two children, Nicolas and Sofia.
