“When the going gets tough, the tough get going” goes an old adage. Last month was an eventful one for the whole nation, with the preparations for Commonwealth games and the Ayodhya verdict coming through. What was inspiring to see was the new face of India. Leaving the disappointments over the commonwealth games preparations, there is a desire to excel, embark and prove ourselves. It is this desire when converted to positive attitude makes us successful. The Ayodhya verdict saw the whole nation come together, calling for peace.

This episode taught us that change is the only thing constant and is inevitable. What becomes important is that desire should get converted into an attitude. We should learn to leave negatives behind and move forward towards a new beginning.

With this positive thought, let’s begin this issue of IBSAF World. We have had a busy two months, with the BOG, the IBSAF Awards for SIP-2010 and the Best Teacher awards taking place, apart from all the regular meets, outings and interactions. You will find excerpts and photographs of all these events in this issue. The BOG meeting for the first time was held at the IBS Hyderabad campus. The members apart from discussions on our future course also took time out to enjoy, interact, look around the campus and spend time with juniors. Alumni meets were held at London and Singapore, photos and excerpts of which are presented in this issue. The Dubai meet on September 24 was a huge success with members coming all the way from Muscat and other nearby places. We would bring you all the details and photographs of this event in the next issue.

In the meantime keep sending your insights and ideas to us and we are sure to become the best and the largest alumni network. We have already crossed the 25000 mark. We have introduced the mentorship program and have received an encouraging response. You are welcome to both – opt for becoming a mentor to guide your juniors or request for a mentor to guide you! Just send in your request to info@ibsaf.org Till then,

Harsh Bhargava ibsafworld@ibsaf.org

The IBS Experience

I remember my first interaction with IBS. Things come alive when I think about my MBA days spent at IBS Gurgaon. We had a good mix of students from diverse educational background. The induction classes before the beginning of first semester really helped me to get into the skin of MBA and gain confidence. I think IBS is one B-school which has an active, participating and happening alumni fraternity. The concepts of dedicated magazine, Alumni portal, Alumni parties, Lounge in city are excellent. Still there is a need for interaction between the alumni and current batches of IBS through seminars, conferences, lectures where alumni can contribute to their alma mater and form a strong network.

Patience is the Key

From my experiences in life, I have learnt patience. The key to 4

counts. It is what you make of what is left with you. Life is a grindstone but whether it grinds us down or polishes us up depends on us.

The funny side

Life is more than a degree or salary

Don’t take your life on single track of either study or Job. Do something creative in your life or some social welfare. That is something which will complete you not the degree or salary at the end of the month in your account.

Take life as it comes

Live each day as it is your last. It means taking life on day-to-day basis.

Balancing personal and professional life

I am a complete family man. I feel if one doesn’t carry family at workplace and work issues when one reaches home, there will never be a question on work-life balance.

Ideal

I have no such ideal but have been inspired by many personalities in my Life. My mother being one of them.

Amit Kumar Jha

IBS Gurgaon (’07) is a chemistry graduate from Magadh University and is working with Tecnova Pvt. Ltd as a Consultant. He is based out of Gurgaon. He is also pursuing his MS (Consulting Management) from BITS Pilani. Amit has worked with several NGOs where he managed projects which required skills in networking, resource handling and project management. He was associated with CII and Ford India during his internship. He loves interacting with people and is an insatiable reader with interest ranging from Indian philosophy, english literature to branding and strategic books. He loves listening to music and watching cricket. You can reach him at amitkjha.mba@gmail.com

There are many funny incidences that occur with me on a regular basis and I have seriously not been able to overcome it. I ride my bike most of times without checking fuel in it, read wrong paper for the examination and get shock of my life, get confused with train timings and reach station at the wrong time.

Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi, George Bernard Shaw, and Deepak Chopra to name a few.

I started out as a Release Engineer at SallieMae Solutions at Bangalore, presently called SCT Sunguard. After that, I moved into Fractal Analytics at Mumbai as a Software Design Engineer for close to two years. Though none of the 2 jobs paid well, the learning was okay. My first break came close to 3 years after starting out. That’s when I joined TCS, Mumbai as software engineer. Those were the days when B.Tech’s and BE’s were the most sought after. Science graduates were generally not hired by IT companies, though things have changed since then. My first job in a leadership role happened when I was offered a position by Satyam at their Hyderabad office. This was by far my best job to date as it exposed me to customers for the first time ever. My job required me to travel extensively and the experience enriched me and reinforced my belief that I belonged here, in the big league of companies. After close to four-and-a-half years at Satyam, I moved to Infosys as a Project Manager in their EAI practice. It has been about a year and I manage Integration projects in the telecom space.

and video gaming. I also love reading Dilbert. I have my own collection of strips running into hundreds of pages.

They are not mutually exclusive. Doing something well requires hard work. At the same time, you have to market yourself. Your managers have to know that you delivered a piece of work on time and within budgets. You need to communicate regularly and that’s where smartness comes into the picture. Of course, some people survive on stealing credit meant for other people, but they are generally found wanting in the long run.

I love driving. My car is my most prized possession. My workplace is about 35 kms from my place of residence. I love driving back home in the evenings, irrespective of traffic conditions.

Stress busting

Your message for budding MBA’s

1. Recession is a state of mind and it will change with time. 2. There is no such thing called instant success. 3. Success is not about winning. It is all about handling losses on the way to winning. 4. If everything seems to come your way, you are in the wrong lane.

Plans for future

All the plans in the immediate future revolve around my son and his schooling, which is expected to start in the next 6 months. In fact, my wife and I are very excited about this new phase in our lives. My motto is a quote by V i n c e Lombardi: Winning isn’t everything, but wanting to win is!!!

IBSAF experience

Not experienced much of IBSAF yet. Participated in one alumni meet in 2008 but have not been a regular by any means. The magazine is a good way to keep abreast of happenings at IBS, though.

Balancing Act

I do not carry my work home. That’s probably the best way to balance the two aspects of life. If there is a burning issue that needs attention, I prefer to work late or stay back at office rather than carry that work home and remain hooked onto the telephone and Internet for hours into the night. Seldom has any official problem 6

Nitin Chaudhary

IBS Mumbai (’07) is working with Diginatives Content Solutions Pvt. Ltd. in their Business Development department looking for International & Domestic Sales. Reach Nitin at chaudhrynitin2@gmail.com

I

started my professional career at an early stage of my life. I worked on marketing profile at F-TEC Computer Center while completing my engineering. From there, post MBA-Marketing I got campus placement in Motilal Oswal Securities Ltd., as an Asst. Manager for their e-broking channel. Due to my family commitments that time I shifted to Delhi and worked for Miracle Technologies as a ManagerCorporate Communications before shifting to Diginatives. Here in Diginatives, apart from handling international and domestic sales I am also involved in pre-sales and marketing activities like preparing business strategies, R&D on target markets and industries.

IBS

IBS reminds me of the days of learning, grooming, entertainment and fun. We used to do edutainment activities to make learning better. All the mentors are like friends and are always ready to clear the doubts. I really miss the time I have spent at IBS Mumbai.

Case study methodology

Indeed a proven and effective methodology for classroom teaching. In over two years we studied more than 150 case studies. But this is just half of the efforts made by the IBS research team.

These case studies perfectly gel with the concepts being taught in classroom teaching. This methodology has helped us in better understanding of complex topics/concepts.

Perfect life

I believe in living my life in present but am prepared for the future as well. If nothing works for me in bad times then I just let it pass by and I always get a way out. I always enjoy my life and the current situation I am in. I really liked and strongly believe in what Mr. R atan Tata said “Don’t focus on how to spend less money, instead focus on how to earn money to spend.”

Biggest lesson

To survive in the competitive world you have to make others to listen to what you say and give attention to what you do. This you have to do not only by your action but also by your words. Never attach your sentiments to a company but make good relationship with your colleagues.

Future

I have plans to start my own education institutes network in near future, but I am concentrating on gaining more and more skills in marketing and sales and also networking with good people. IBSAF World

I strongly believe that “IF THERE IS A WILL, THERE IS A WAY”. I always try to find out the different ways to handle high pressure situations. I never lose confidence and faith in myself during high pressure situations.

Balance

I try to put my 100% efforts and involvement in the job as well as at home. I never carry any personal stress to office; similarly, after office hours I am totally dedicated towards my family.

Lessons

Being a pharmacy graduate with two years of experience in a pharmaceutical company, I shifted to banking sector just after MBA in order to flourish in the financial sector. This decision was the biggest lesson in my life. As I believe in myself and in the great support of IBS, I started

achieving success in the banking sector.

IBS

I would like to express my deepest gratitude towards IBS because it is such a magnificent business school where students can learn a lot because of its study curriculum, highly qualified faculty members, disciplined environment and gives practical knowledge to students. The important fundas I learned from IBS is CRM – Customer Relationship Management, Time Management, Handling Pressures and Smart Working.

My Philosophy In Life – “celebrate life – with each moment with every movement”

Two “Musts” I carry

Sincerity and positive attitude towards work.

W

ake up at 6 am…get r e a d y … h a v e breakfast…and reach office by 9/9:30. At office hear your boss give out targets to you. All day long you make sincere efforts to please him/her and do your job efficiently. At the end of the day, when you may or may not have had lunch or even a short break, you are asked about “the numbers”. If you have achieved them you are saved for the day. If not, the targets are doubled for the next day. Your so-called “friends” at office are only looking for opportunities to backstab you and step over you at the time of appraisals. When you reach home at 10 at night you are not left with any energy to mingle with your family or friends. This is the life today’s society has designed for you. And then you sit down and think — is it all worth it? Your health goes for a toss, your social life is gone and your power to think for yourself is eaten away.

Darshan and

Abhilash Batch of 2008, IBS BANGALORE E Mail id: abhicmouli@gmail.com, darshan_ibs@yahoo.co.in You are so used to doing things the way you are told, that you just stop questioning things and you learn to accept anything and

everything, whether or not it makes sense to you. Then you wonder for whom are you doing all this? To make some organization richer? Is it really worth it? Considering all this we quit our jobs, bid those hefty packages goodbye and now we are on our own. To start with, we have opened a music institute at Banashankari, by the name of JB Musicals, bringing forward the story of this renowned institute to Bangalore from Mysore. We are also coming up with specialty tourism shortly, by the name of Prana. Life, like this, is also not easy. We face financial crunches typically, slog equally hard or probably more than we used to in the corporate, but at the end of the day we have the satisfaction that we are doing this for ourselves, and not to make anyone else rich. We have room for creativity, we are the decision makers. If something does not make sense to us, we drop it. We take suggestions, guidance, but apply it as and when we want to. We have time for ourselves, our family. We are proud that we have utilized our education to build our character and acumen, and not merely to seek jobs. We do not lead a mechanical, monotonous life. We work on weekends and have an off on weekdays, because that works out for us. While most people suffer from ‘Monday Blues’, we celebrate that ‘It’s Monday’!! There are hurdles, but it is exciting. For those who think that they should enter the corporate world and gain some experience before they venture out on their own, we would just like to say that once you are there, you might never be able to come out leaving the huge packages, security and comfort. If you want to be an entrepreneur, the time is now! If not now, then when?!! IBSAF World

IBSAF World

IBS for me was the gateway to plunge into the maddening corporate world. The experiences that I have gathered in those 2 years help me to sail through the stress conditions today. Life after all, is a great balancing act. This is even truer for a working woman who needs to juggle family and work front on a day-to-day basis. It was never easy then to balance the rigorous class lectures and assignments along with the extracurricular activities – like being a part of the editorial team, member of the fest committee etc. However, I firmly believe that all those helped me in being what I am today and taught me to balance and prioritize work and life more effectively. I personally consider those to be the greatest takeaways from IBS apart from the management insights. The experiences and learning at IBS have had significant influence on my thought process and way of living.

Life after IBS

My journey after IBS has been quite interesting and challenging. I consider myself to be fortunate to be a part of two of the BIG 4s in last three years. After my campus placement with PricewaterhouseCooper in Transfer Pricing, I ventured for a short period into the investment banking arena at HSBC and then moved in Transfer Pricing with Deloitte. The last three years were extremely fulfilling. I believe consultancy is a very different ball game wherein the learning curve is constantly moving

upward. Every new assignment unfolds a new challenge and something new to learn. Moreover in consultancy one always has to be proactive in upgrading his/her skill sets as otherwise there is always a probability of being antiquated.

Life’s Mantra – Give time to yourself and invest in things you love to do

I believe it is very important to invest a lot of time in things one loves to do. Work takes away most of our time and we are most of the time complaining of stress, boredom, monotonous work life etc. Unfortunately most of our energy goes in regretting things we cannot help. However, we all can thrive to lessen these regrets by doing things which makes us happy, be it a frequent long drive or a music lesson or a good read. This is my only distressing mantra and I strongly endorse it amongst friends. These also help my mind to relax and encourage out-of-thebox thinking.

Take life as it comes – so enjoy every moment without being bothered about what is in store for future

Well let me give a disclaimer that I did not mean that one should be reluctant and enjoy life without prioritizing or working hard. All I am trying to harp on is one should be persevering and give best shot for every aspect of life but should not worry about the fallouts too much as the future is not really in our hands. Well it might sound like a cliché message of a selfdevelopment book. But in reality this works for me. Not that it is easy to follow this mantra always but if one can adhere to it, it can

work wonders. On the job front this philosophy can actually reduce a lot of stress and eventually produce a better output.

Striving for that next level is important

Saying this, one should also continuously strive for achieving something more in life. The Pepsi tag “Yeh Dil Mange More” is a brilliant way to express this thought. I would like to quote Mr. Chetan Bhagat –“To us, having material landmarks is success and rightly so. When you have grown up where money constraints force everyday choices, financial freedom is a big achievement. But it isn’t the purpose of life. If that was the case, Mr. Ambani would not show up for work. Shah Rukh Khan would stay at home and not dance anymore. Steve Jobs won’t be working hard to make a better iPhone, as he sold Pixar for billions of dollars already. Why do they do it? What makes them come to work every day? They do it because it makes them happy. They do it because it makes them feel alive. Just getting better from current levels feels good. If you study hard, you can improve your rank. If you make an effort to interact with people, you will do better in interviews. If you practice, your cricket will get better. You may also know that you cannot become Tendulkar, yet. But you can get to the next level.” Therefore for me I feel that the key to live a fulfilling life is always – to strive for that next level.

The hardest thing about getting news from the Net is keeping up with it. First there were browser-based bookmarks, but you had to check them all the time. Then the RSS reader was invented, which brought the news home by asking you to subscribe to feeds from your favorite sites. Invariably, they stacked up, unread. Then popurls (it rhymes with popular) cracked the code by pulling together up-to-the-moment headlines from the biggest and most popular news and opinion sites, blogs and vlogs onto one giant Web page for you to graze through. There’s nothing to remember to check or install. It’s the perfect homepage.

A long, long time ago, in a galaxy not so far away, Google was just two grad students at Stanford with a smart idea for search technology. Today’s search whiz kid is Stephen Wolfram, one of the biggest brains on the planet — and he’s got the new idea. Wolfram has developed a search engine that can actually understand your questions and try to figure out answers. It takes some doing to learn how to talk to Wolfram|Alpha, but it’s well worth it. The old way of cooking at home included figuring out what you wanted to eat, looking up the recipe in a cookbook, buying the ingredients and whipping the meal up. Here’s the Supercook way: Open your fridge and pantry, type the ingredients you have into the site’s search bar and stand back. Supercook will look through its database of 300,000-plus recipes and spit out the ones that match. The result? You can start cooking right away, using food that would otherwise spoil. It’s a painless alternative to traditional menu-planning and a great way to find new recipes and economize at the same time. Visuwords is a thesaurus reimagined as a toy. It asks you to think of a word and then turns that word into a universe of bouncing, rotating, vibrating meaning by pulling related words into an orbit around it. The words careen off one another like balls on a billiard table until they settle down, at which point you can set them in motion again — or choose a new word. It’s highly addictive, especially for English majors.

Leave your

behind

r Arijit Sarker, Director, Google India exhorted the students of IBS to ‘leave their ego behind’ on graduation while delivering the keynote address at an awards function in IBS, Hyderabad on September 5, 2010. He also advised the students to ‘connect the dots’ between theory and practice using the medium of Internship. He distributed the Awards for Excellence in SIP-2010 to the graduating class from all 10 campuses of IBS across India. These awards instituted by IBS Alumni Federation in 2007 recognize the best SIPs undertaken by MBA students every year. This year out of nearly 3000 students, 31 students were selected for the Award which carries a cash prize of Rs. 10,000, a certificate and a trophy. Sharing their experiences, Gunjan an awardee from IBS Gurgaon said “It broadened my perspective” while Amit from Mumbai quipped “Team work was the key to success”. They were unanimous in saying that SIP was a turning point in their MBA program. It prepared and transformed them to face the real life outside the classroom.

The awards ceremony was also attended by many alumni of IBS. Rajeev Gupta, one of the alumni quipped “Wish we had a chance to compete for such awards in our time.” The internship at IBS is supervised and assessed jointly by an industry guide as well as a faculty guide. One of the industry guides who had supervised the 14-week internship in Hyderabad said “We are delighted to have students of IBS for internship. They are keen on learning and applying their knowledge.”

This year a total of 1000 organizations participated in the Internship program of IBS across India including 5 organizations overseas.

SIP 2010

IBSAF Awards for Excellence in

Selection Process

The selection process for the Award for Excellence in SIP is pretty rigorous. After initial shortlisting by the campuses, they are presented before the Final Selection Committee comprising IBS alumni, faculty members and respective campus head of IBS. The alumni are the key decision makers as the award has been instituted by the Alumni Federation. The principle of ‘conflict of interest’ is also followed in the selection process.

SIP Differentiators at IBS

At IBS, the SIP is of 15-week duration which starts in February and goes on till May. Each SIP student has two supervisors—one from the faculty and the other from the industry. Students are encouraged to take projects that are not only from the industry but also the social sector. Students

thus get the much needed exposure to real life. More than problem solving, SIP enables them to get an experience of corporate work environment, associated stress, building relationships, importance of targets and deadlines and time management.

Learning Outcomes of SIP ●

Students will exhibit productive workplace behavior that will

assist them in becoming responsible productive employees/individuals. ●

Students will demonstrate managerial skills. Students will apply academic knowledge in the field.

Acknowledgements

At the outset we would like to acknowledge the encouragement given by all the organizations and companies that regularly repose faith in IBS students and accept them for the long internship program. We also thank the company guides who give their precious time and professional inputs for nurturing these future leaders/managers of the country. And lastly we acknowledge the efforts put in by the IBS faculty and students for making the Internship Program a success.

was hired as an intern of Lakshya Consulting, which provides value-added advisory and consulting services i.e. business valuations, business plans preparation/vetting, economic feasibility reports, project financing, fund raising, VC & PE advisory, etc. My entire journey was full of practical learnings and experience of the field of corporate finance.

Throughout this internship, I accomplished many things – from developing a functional analysis report for a transfer pricing assignment, to acquiring knowledge about the various methods to calculate the arms length price, to advanced financial analytics, complicated beta calculations and business valuations using the DCF methodology. I was designing and working on valuation models, along with their finer nuances, and learning the practical aspects of finance which I hitherto only studied during my college days.

Lakshya Consulting’s strict quality standards made me learn how things should be done in a consulting firm. It made me realize how even small things make a big difference to the final work. I learnt to focus very strongly on standardization, language, completion, essence, etc., when it comes to report writing.

I was very lucky to attend Sankalp 2010 (Social Enterprise Awards & Investment Forum) at Taj Lands End during my internship, as a Lakshya Consulting representative. Here, I got my first brush with the corporate culture and etiquette. I got an opportunity to meet and interact with top level executives and investors. I would like to thank the CEO of Lakshya Consulting, Mr. Pratik Singhi, who incidentally is also an IBS-Mumbai alumnus of the 1999 batch, an incredible mentor for continuous guidance and my colleagues, Anand Prakash and Srikant Adhikarla. ITC: Enduring value My project at ITC was titled, “An evaluation of the w h o l e s a l e channel of PCP business of ITC Ltd”. The project so given covered a wide range of research study. According to the project, my task was to understand the wholesale channel of distribution focusing on ITC distributor, wholesaler, retailers and then the ultimate consumer. The task involved an in-depth study of the PCP product variants, their supply according to their demand, and demand in comparison with HUL & P&G. The next step was to build the strategies to improve the sale of the products and implement them at various retail and wholesale outlets.

From the 2nd day of my SIP I was send to the wholesale distributor office and was told to gather all the relevant information about the personal care products. For which I had to spend time in the distributor warehouse and had to monitor each and every variant. For a week I was made to understand the various variants. After that for 4 weeks I was sent with the different wholesalers to understand the actual market position of the products. This involved visiting each and every wholesale outlet and knowing their problems and suggestions about the product. It was a great practical experience and taught me things which no theory session could have. All together it was on excellent experience with an amazing exposure. Shruti Kohli Class of 2011

Learnings

I started my internship on February 15, 2010, with “Smart Careers”. The organization prepares students for competitive exams for admission at undergraduate level. I started with counseling sessions; I counseled and enrolled many students in their schools and also visited their homes. I was handling 150 students at two centers. This boosted my confidence level and managerial skills. I came to know how a business entity runs. I applied theoretical knowledge into practical environment and applied my research techniques knowledge for analyzing data collected for project work. In the field of marketing I went to various schools at the time of CBSE board’s exams, which started on March 4 and went on to March 29; I covered almost each and every school of west Delhi. I went to these schools and counseled students who were there for their board exams along with their parents. I learned how to apply marketing skills practically during my school activities. I also distributed various smart cards issued by our company and collected data of those students and parents along with their names and phone No.s so that the company can use it for the purpose of taking feedback from the students. I availed them with various discount offers; various vouchers and I also understood their mindset and guided them accordingly. When I worked as a center manager I came across various problems which the students at my center were facing relating to the teaching method of the particular faculty, the batch timings, the shifting of students into different batches etc. In short, I have inculcated leadership qualities, learnt management skills, understood how a business entity works, enhanced my communication skills and learned the applications of theoretical knowledge. My Experience At Indusind Bank

When I joined IBS for t h e M B A program in 2009, I always had a dream corporate career in my mind. The commencement of my SIP was a major milestone of my dream. My first day at IndusInd Bank was full of thrill and excitement coupled with a lot of underline stress. The next fourteen weeks went by understanding the nitty-gritty’s of real life corporate experience, its culture. What I would really carry on for the rest of my life is the informal relationship I shared with my various colleagues over lunch or coffee. The vital lesson that I learnt at the end of the day is that one should be “passionate” about everything that he or she does. This is something I experienced and wish to carry lifelong. Alumni Meet @

T

he Singapore chapter of the IBS Alumni met at the Raffles Hotel on the evening of Saturday, July 24, 2010. The evening started off rather slowly, with people getting delayed due to the traffic restrictions on account of the rehearsals for the national day parade. But once the gathering was complete, the mood was one of camaraderie and pride. As the group introduced themselves, it was heartening to see members from various batches and campuses coming together, eager to

found their life partners while at IBS!!! Now if these marriages are as successful as the professional lives of their students, this could become a very marketable USP!!! I guess this too would have to be time-tested. The formal introductions were done, and it was time to have some fun. First up was the kid’s game—the well-known lemon spoon race. The participation was rather scarce as there were only two kids present. But they were cheered on enthusiastically by everybody present, as both of them were declared winners.

To win, they would have to pick up as many of the rubber bands and pass them along the entire length of their line and deposit them in an empty chair placed at the end. The catch—this would have to be accomplished using the given straws which were to be held in their mouths. It was a visual worthy of “A m e r i c a ’ s F u n n i e s t Videos”. At

Coming from different campuses of IBSAF, the professors gave an overview of the latest developments, curriculum, placements, etc. Another striking fact that came to light during the introductions was the number of people who

Next up, was a couple’s game. The object of the game was for the husbands to stick as many straws as they could in their wives lovely locks in 30 seconds. The team that had the most number of straws still on the hair was the winner. After 3 grueling rounds and what seemed like an eternity of looking like fools to the wives, the winning team was declared. For the next game, the whole group was divided into two teams and made to stand in two parallel lines. Every member of the team was given a straw. Each team had a

the end of the allotted time, the professors got down to counting the bands, deposited by each team. Team A was declared the winner by 2 bands. There were whispers that the two children had in fact helped the other team by unwittingly taking the infamous rubber bands for their own games, but since nothing could be proven beyond a reasonable doubt, Team B had to abide by the judges’ decision. I guess no party is complete, without a round of musical chairs for the ladies. So keeping up with tradition, the fairer sex went around

“Actually I’m delivering a new baby today!”, these were the first few words of Prashant while inaugurating his yet another fabulous play “Mile Sur Mera Tumhara”. Trek to Shamirpet Lake

delivered at IBS, Hyderabad on 29th June, 2010

August 14, 2010 dawned early for all members of Prakriti, our Environment Club. We left the campus at 4.45 AM, an hour at which we seldom get up otherwise! We reached Shamirpet lake which is around 70 km from our college by 6:30 AM. It was a pleasant morning with cool breeze and an overcast sky. We were also joined at the lake by Prof Harsh Bhargava who explained the damage that uncontrolled quarrying had done to the lake. We saw huge tracts of land now devoid of the rocks and thus prone to mudslides. Rain water would now wash away the sand and thus cause silting of the lake besides higher losses due to seepage in the soil. This is what we the humans do to our precious environment! We started our trek with bird watching around the lake and there were many birds across the lake, some flying in the sky, some searching for food, and some taking rest after their routine activity. It was a beautiful experience to spot the birds and watch them through the binoculars because with binoculars we were able to see the real beauty of these birds with which they are gifted. To name a few birds which we spotted were: Cormorants (It has water proof wings), Grey Heron, Lesser Egret, Indian Shag, Shrike (it catches the food like lizard or insects and hangs them on thorny bush and eats them after it gets dried), Lark, Bulbuls, Mynahs, Pond Heron, Ducks (swimming across the lake), Lapwing (which calls ‘did-you-do-it’ and makes its nest in

of 1997), Assistant Vice President, Mahindra Satyam

People are the Key to Success

Mr. Hirdesh Singhal started the lecture by telling us what we should do in order to succeed. We should gain up-to-date knowledge of the function we are going to join. We should also be aware of what is happening in the industry and communication plays an important part in success. We should be a team player and should develop people, capability. He told us that we should conceptualize an initiative, give confidence to the management to lead it and showcase execution excellence capabilities in an event or initiative. The initiative should add value to the organization. We should have the ability to lead people. Execute and achieve objective by taking people along. Taking people along without authority is the key to become a successful leader. In global organizations, we should be able to work with people from diverse backgrounds. Diversity is important to organizations. We should avoid groups and should make effort to avoid speaking in vernacular because it hinders communication.

In organizations, language and business communication are very important. Communication can make or break a person’s career. Communication should always be proactive. It becomes more important when we foresee certain risks in the work or in achieving project objectives. We should take calculated risks to achieve something better, higher. Articulation too is important. Intentions should be expressed correctly and clearly. Aparna Kapse Class of 2012, IBS Hyderabad

After soaking in the rain and enjoying the beauty of the lake we proceeded to College of Defence Management, which is only one of its kind in India. This college is built on a rocky terrain which was once a barren patch as shown to us in dated pictures. The greenery around the college campus is very well maintained and worth a visit. This college imparts management education to defense personnel from India and friendly foreign countries who come with 20 years or more of work experience. We were given a guided tour by Col Jagdish Chaudhuri who showed us high-tech classrooms, seminar hall and academic block. The high point was breakfast in officer’s mess and everyone liked it so much that they had to refill the dishes many times! We proved the old adage that an Army marches on its stomach! Snake Show (31

O

ST

JULY, 2010)

n July 31st, Prakriti club of IBS, Hyderabad, showcased a live snake demonstration event for one and all in the campus. The show was a good mix of entertainment and learning. It managed to pull a huge crowd and the auditorium was packed to capacity. The show started at 3 in the afternoon, and all who came for it remained glued to their seats for the next couple of hours. It was conducted by Mr. Rajkumar Kanuri, The founder of, “The Friends of Snake Society. Mr. Rajkumar in an interactive session told us about the different species of snakes found in India and the plethora of myths encircling them.

To begin with he acquainted us with various non-venomous species of snakes found in the region. Some five odd such snakes were displayed to the audience. Amongst them were the Green Vine Snake (which merges with the trees and leaves), Common Sand Boa, the two-headed Red Sand Boa, the Checkered Keelback and the Rat snake. The non-venomous family of snakes survive on birds, rats and other smaller animals. The most attractive amongst them was the mammoth sized Python, which has become one of the endangered species today due to excessive hunting and deaths in conflict with humans.

The crowd was awestruck by the way Mr. Rajkumar handled each of them and vividly talked about the body color, habitat, distinct marks and traits of each of them. He emphasized upon the position and importance of snakes in our food chain. He very graphically told us about his various encounters with these mystic creatures, his friends. As the session proceeded, the audience was acquainted with the venomous and more aggressive members of the same family. There are close to some 53 species of venomous snakes and some 20 odd species amongst them wander on land. The rest take sea as a natural habitat. 24

The four most venomous and dangerous prodigies of the family were introduced during the show. Not only aggressive and dangerous, they were also majestically beautiful. The first was the Common Krait followed by the Russell Viper and the Common Cobra. These non-gregarious creatures were amongst the few found in India.

The show was an eye-opener for many who dreaded this mysterious creature. During the show we learnt about h u m a n hostility towards them and v a r i o u s myths spread through the grapevines across the nation about them. The students were also briefed on precautions to be taken, if one encounters a poisonous or a nonpoisonous snake. All in all, it was an entertaining and an informative show that indeed did help many of us to befriend the dreaded creature and admire their mystic beauty.

LONDON

Alumni Meet @

I

BSAF organized the second alumni meet of the London chapter on July 24,2010. The venue was Mumbai Junction, one of London’s finest gastro pubs for Indian food. The venue is located in Harrow on the Hill, home to the famous Harrow Boys School where India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had his schooling. More than 25 alumni members turned up for the meet along with their spouses and children. It was a good way to catch up with batch mates and friends on network. It was a good opportunity for the first batch of Icfai Britannica students studying in Luton to meet IBS alumni and discuss the ways of landing on a job in the UK. The meeting was addressed by Prof S Venkata Seshaiah, Dean Research and Board Member of IBSAF, and Dr P Venkateswarlu Assistant Registrar, IBS. Prof Seshaiah briefed the developments taking place in the sphere of higher education in India with particular reference to ICFAI. Dr. Venkateswarlu apprised everybody of the strides that ICFAI had made in India and abroad. The mood was totally chilled out as everyone enjoyed the wine and food. The fact that many alumni made an effort to turn up for the meet was a touching tribute to the enduring relationship that they wish to maintain with ICFAI and a testimony to the productive time spent in the IBS campuses.

She was ten during World War II, and remembers hiding under the kitchen sink for fear of being found during the island’s occupation. During some daytime restlessness, young Adriana sneaks outside and discovers an injured boy. Amdu Diop is a Senegalese 17year-old AWOL soldier. Adriana helps Amdu, who takes refuge in the family home. The pair form a bond and the innocent beginnings of first love. This war-time past is mixed with Adriana’s current situation. She collapses in the commuter train. She provides narration of the present events, observing the other passengers’ reactions outside her own unconsciousness. Author Joanna Scott deftly combines the two storylines. Adriana’s childhood is the most interesting portion of the book, but her current health status commands readers’ attention toward events of the present day. Vivid setting descriptions are evident in the book. Images of Elba, presented through Adriana’s young eyes are bright despite the darkness of war-time occupation. Interesting characters and events make this novel a good choice for those who like a deeper, more thought-provoking level of fiction. Liberation is a literary trip to another time and place.

IBS Alumnus attends conference in China B Siddharth Reddy, class of 2010 attended the 2nd IEEE International Conference on Information and Financial Engineering (IEEE ICIFE 2010) held in Chongqing, China during September 17 to 19, 2010. The main aim of ICIFE 2010 was to provide a platform for researchers, engineers, academicians as well as industrial professionals from all over the world to present their research results and development activities in Information and Financial Engineering. The conference provided opportunities for the delegates to exchange new ideas and application experiences face-toface, and to establish business and research relations. It also provided an opportunity to find global partners for future collaborations. The papers were reviewed by the technical committee which included Professors from China, India, USA, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Turkey, Egypt, France, Malaysia, Iran and Taiwan. Following is brief report by the alumnus. “My paper was on Prediction of Stock Market Indies – using SAS. The main objective of the paper was to analyze and forecast the data selected over a

time period of 13 years. Apart from the presentations in the conference, the exposure I gained over my stay with the delegates round the globe was tremendous. There were many researchers, academicians and engineers present from almost all the continents. The interaction with them and other esteemed panelists was very informative coupled with a wide range of discussions on the topics, which were thrown to the panel as well as the participants for them to explore in their respective fields. Each presenter was given a time frame of 15 minutes to present the research paper including Q&A session on the same. I am grateful to IBSAF for supporting my participation in this conference as an alumnus of Icfai Business School (IBS), India. Having opened my presentation with Ni Hao (Hello), Zao Shong Hao (Good Morning) in Chinese, I acknowledged a huge round of applause in the session hall, especially from the presenters who were from China and Vietnam. The presentation was very interactive coupled with a Q&A session”.

The alumni meet in Dubai on September 24 was a

great success. There were in all 41 adults and 4 kids. Everyone enjoyed the

desert safari, especially,
