Manmohan-Sitharaman on economy
State of economy deeply worrying: Dr. Singh Sitharaman side-steps Singh’s remarks Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday side-stepped a question on former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s remarks that the government should put aside “vendetta politics” and reach out to all sane voices to steer the country’s economy out of a “man-made” crisis. On being asked to respond to the former Prime Minister’s remarks, she said, “Is Dr Singh saying that ‘instead of indulging in political vendetta they should consult sane voices?’ Has he said that? All right, thank you, I will take his statement on it. That is my answer.” At a press conference, when a reporter asked if the country is going through a slowdown, Sitharaman said: “The government has been in consultation with a lot of sectors. Because in some sectors, the inventory is piling up… different issues for different sectors and having heard that and having spent some time to see how best we can respond, the first tranche of announcement were made August 23. “Last Friday I made one other set of announce-
NEW DELHI, Sep 1 (PTI): Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday said the state of the economy was “deeply worrying” and urged the government to put aside “vendetta politics” and reach out to sane voices and thinking minds to steer the economy out of this “manmade crisis”. The Congress leader said “all-round mismanagement” by the Modi government was responsible for the slowdown. “The state of the economy today is deeply worrying. The last quarter’s GDP growth rate of 5 pc signals that we are in the midst of a prolonged slowdown. India has the potential to grow at a much faster rate but allround mismanagement by the Modi government has resulted in this slow down,” he said in a statement. Targeting the government, Singh said the country’s youth, farmers and farm workers, entrepreneurs and the marginalised sections deserve better. India cannot afford to continue down this path, he said, adding, “I urge the government to put aside vendetta politics, and reach
out to all sane voices and thinking minds, to steer our economy out of this manmade crisis.” Singh said it is particularly distressing that the manufacturing sector’s growth is tottering at 0.6 pc. “This makes it very clear that our economy has not yet recovered from man-made blunders of demonetisation and a hastily implemented GST,” he said. On government taking Rs 1.76 lakh crore from the RBI reserves, Singh said the resilience of the RBI will be tested after this record transfer to the government. This, he said, “claims that it does not have a plan on what it will do with this windfall”.

New MV Act from today: Rs 10,000 fine for drunk driving, jail for violations under law NEW DELHI, SEP 1 (AGENCIES): Violating traffic rules will attract harsher penalty from Sunday as the newly amended Motor Vehicles Act comes into force. According to India Today, driving under the influence of alcohol, not giving way to ambulances or fire brigade will attract a penalty of Rs 10,000 or imprisonment starting September 1. In some cases, an individual violating laws could end up paying the fine and going to jail. The Motor Vehicles Amendment Act, which was approved by President Ram Nath Kovind last month aims at stricter punishment for violation of traffic regulations. Besides, the amended rules include several other stringent measures to increase awareness and road behaviour. Not wearing seat belt, drunk and dangerous driving, over-speeding, jumping red lights, driving without insurance and overloading vehicles will also attract higher penalties. Meanwhile, if twowheeler owners are caught riding without helmets, they will not only have to pay a fine of Rs 1,000 but could have their licences suspended for the next three months. Motive behind stricter rules: The stricter rules have been implemented to imbibe a sense of responsibility among citizens as it could lead to a reduction in the number of traffic rule violations in the country. But the rules are also aimed at increasing accountability. Under the fresh rules, a road contractor can also be penalised for failing to maintain standards pertaining to

with stricter rules. Penalties have been increased under the new law to make people more aware of road safety; earlier people would bribe their way after violating rules as the penalties were low compared to the fresh amendment. The law also aims to reduce incidents of untrained people obtaining driving licences (DL) by reducing human interference. Under the fresh rules, the process
of obtaining a DL will be much harder something that would help keep away untrained drivers from roads. It is worth noting that the amended act provides scope for increasing the fine amount by 10 per cent annually. Higher fines, according to authorities, will not only help in increasing awareness but it would keep people aware of traffic rules, which were often broken under the previous set of rules.
