provide direct accessibility to Dimapur-bound passenger vehicles by avoiding the traffic congestion. He also proposed setting up of a tollgate to collect revenue for maintenance of the road and recovery of investment made by MoRTH. Further, the chief minister urged for declaration of six roads in the State as national highways as these had been accorded “in principle approval”. The roads are (i) Showuba-Guzunyu-Pughoboto-Zunheboto-AghunatoNoklak-Pangsha (200 km), (ii) Trans-Eastern Highway from Mon-Longwa-Pangsha-Kiphire-Avangkhu (280 km), (iii) 2.7-km NH-29 to NH-29 (Dimapur byepass), (iv) 167-km Gandhi

Ashram-Chuchuyimlang (NH-2) to Pangsha (ITC), (v) Maibong-Tening in Nagaland to Tamenglong via Tamei in Manipur (75 km) and (vi) Ramani Ali Simulguri-Bihubor in Assam to Mon in Nagaland (71 km). He said detailed project reports (DPRs) of these roads were being prepared by consultants hired by MoRTH, adding that these roads might be notified as national highway before November this year. This would enable the State government to maintain the roads on a regular basis as currently these were not maintained due to resource constraints. Rio further pressed for approval and sanction of the proposed two-lane Trans-

Nagaland Highway (earlier known as Foothill Road) in the financial year 2018-19. The project has been divided into three phases. Survey of the first phase (Amguri to Niuland) covering a stretch of 189 km was completed by a consultant and draft feasibility report (DFR) submitted on July 2 this year. The consultant for the first phase was empanelled and hired by MoRTH. The first phase alignment of the Trans-Nagaland Highway runs similar to the surveyed DFR. In this regard, Rio conveyed to the Central ministry that the State government approved the proposed alignment on September 21 and notified the land possession as per specification, adding that DPR preparation was in final stage of completion and would be submitted in the first week of November. The chief minister urged Gadkari for hiring consultants for the remaining two phases of the project (106-km Tizit to Amguri and 79-km Niuland to Athibung) in 2018-19. Regarding paying of compensation, Rio explained that while the State government

(L-R) Daily organic market after the launch on Sept 4 and a deserted look of the market on Sept 24. (NP)

Staff Reporter DIMAPUR, SEP 25 (NPN): Less than a month since it was inaugurated with much fanfare, the much-hyped organic market is fast losing its appeal – both among the farmers as well as customers. When the organic market near bus stand at Supermarket was inaugurated on September 4, it spelt hope for local farmers as they thought they had finally found a place to sell their agricultural produce. Barring a few rows, almost every stall was occupied and the sight of fresh vegetables brought directly from agricultural fields by local farmers appealed to many healthconscious customers too. However, barely 20 days later, the number of stalls has dwindled to al-

most one-third now compared to the almost full occupancy when the market was inaugurated. Also, there is very little buzz as customer footfall has fallen drastically. When the organic market was open, the general populace welcomed the idea and it became a subject of discussion even on social media. And on September 7, governor PB Acharya had also shopped at the market and donated Rs 2 lakh for buying a pick-up truck to help local farmers bring their agricultural produce to the market. On Monday, Nagaland Post visited the market and interacted with the farmers to find out why the numbers of sellers had reduced so drastically. Most of the local women at the market said that not many people

were aware of the market selling organic local produce. Customer came, but they came in trickles, they complained. Their complaint seemed justified as there were hardly two to three customers in the market when this reporter interacted with them on Monday afternoon. The second issue faced by the local women farmers is transportation. Many of them come from Chumukedima area and beyond. Speaking to this reporter, a member of the Farmers Interest Group (FIG) from Chumukedima, A Aprilie said that while she appreciated the government for not charging them rent for the stalls, transportation had emerged as a major bottleneck. Parl to decide ban on candidates with criminal past NEW DELHI, SEP 25 (PTI): Observing criminalisation of politics is a bitter manifest truth and a “termite” to the citadel of democracy, the Supreme Court Tuesday left it to Parliament to bar those facing trial for heinous and grievous offences from con-

testing elections by enacting a “strong law”. Declining to put a ban on candidates with criminal antecedents from entering the poll fray, which, it said is the domain of the legislature, the court said the law should also make it mandatory for political parties to

revoke the membership of candidates facing serious criminal cases. The court, however, passed a slew of directions to cleanse the “polluted stream of politics”. One of the directions was that pending criminal (Cont’d on p-7)

Nagaland among lowest immunized States Correspondent

KOHIMA, SEP 25 (NPN): State immunisation officer Dr Atoshe Sema said Nagaland was one of the lowest immunised States in the country, which was one of the reasons for high infant mortality rate. Dr Atoshe said this during an intensive media sensitisation programme on measles and rubella vaccination campaign organised by National Health Mission, Nagaland at Hotel Vivor here on Tuesday afternoon. In his opening remark, the state immunisation officer said measles and rubella vaccination campaign was launched in February 2017, adding that Nagaland and other North-eastern States were now being covered under the third phase of intensive campaign. He said the vaccination campaign would begin on October 3 at GHSS, Sek-

hazou here. He said India had high infant mortality cases due to measles outbreak, adding the Central government’s intention was to eliminate the disease by 2020. Asserting that measlesrubella had no cure but could only be prevented, Dr Atoshe appealed to all stakeholders to join the campaign, stressing that the target for the vaccination campaign should be to cover not be less than 95% children. He said unless the target was achieved, the vaccination drive would continue. He said each child would be tracked till the target was achieved and appealed to all citizens not to have any apprehensions and speculations over the vaccine, adding that Nagaland was not the first State to launch this campaign. According to documents made available to media persons, around 41

crore children are expected to be covered across the country in next two years under the national measles and rubella campaign. All children aged between 9 months and less than 15 years will be given a single shot of measlesrubella (MR) vaccine, irrespective of their previous measles/rubella vaccination status or measles/rubella disease status. MR vaccine will be provided free- of-cost across the States from session sites at schools as well as health facilities and outreach session sites. Currently, measles vaccine is provided under Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP) and rubella vaccine will be a new addition. Children in the age group of 9-15 are targeted as it was observed that maximum number of measles and rubella in the country was among children less

than 15 years. Children will be vaccinated by a trained health worker and all immunisation sessions, whether in schools or outreach session sites, will be linked with fully-equipped health centres to handle any adverse events, even as all safety measures have been adopted during the course of vaccination. There is a danger of contracting measles and rubella by children who do not get vaccinated and, even if vaccinated, a child must get MR vaccine as the vaccine will enable it to fight against measles or rubella. Earlier, health officer of UNICEF Dr Maulik Shah spoke on MR vaccination campaign, while SBCC consultant of UNICEF spoke on role of media in MR campaign. SMO (WHO) Dr Sheila spoke on the frequently asked questions, which was followed by an open discussion.

Interacting with Union minister for Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), shipping, Nitin Gadkari along with MoRTH officials at State Convention Centre in Shillong on Monday during a review meeting of National Highways and SARDP-NE projects, Rio said existing NH-129 and NH-29 passed through Dimapur city, which was Nagaland’s biggest commercial hub, and connected neighbouring Assam districts of Karbi Anglong and Golaghat. He stressed that diversion was urgently required to ease Dimapur’s traffic congestion, besides providing accessibility to buses entering Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT), located 700 metres away from the proposed road diversion, as this would
