BJP vows to deport infiltrators

NEW DELHI, SEP 11 (AGENCIES): BJP president Amit Shah on Tuesday said that all infiltrators from Bangladesh would be identified and made to leave India. Addressing BJP office bearers and workers during one-day visit to Jaipur in Rajasthan, Shah said that the party would not allow any Bangladeshi infiltrator to live in India. Shah also used the opportunity to attack the critics of National Register of Citizens draft release by the Assam government. He said that those not in favour of Assam NRC are merely doing votebank politics in the name of protection of human rights. “Those who are worried about their votebank are talking about human rights violation. They are not bothered about the country and the poor people of the country,” said the BJP president on the issue of Assam NRC. Attacking West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief, Amit Shah, “The leader of West Bengal (Mamata Banerjee) is also bothered about the well being of

those living in India illegally. She is not bothered about the Indians.” The BJP chief further talked about the Citizen Amendment Bill, saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has brought it to benefit migrants. He said that Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist and Jain migrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh are not illegal immigrants but refugees, and they would be given Indian citizenship. Addressing the BJP members on the issue of 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Shah said that no alliance of opposition parties would be able to defeat the BJP. He also targeted the Congress party president

Rahul Gandhi saying, “Rahul baba ka kehna hai ki Congress teeno rajyo ka chunaav jeetegi. Mujhe lagta hai Rahul baba ko Mungeri lal ke sapne dekhna band kar dena chahiye (Rahul baba says that the Congress will win elections in all three states. I feel Rahul baba should stop day dreaming).” Detect, delete and deport, says Ram Madhav: BJP general secretary Ram Madhav said people excluded from the final list of Assam-specific National Register of Citizens would be de-franchised and deported to their country, while Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal suggested that the NRC be

crosses `80 mark in Tuensang

NEW DELHI/DIMAPUR, SEP 11 (AGENCIES/NPN): As fuel prices continued to rise Tuesday to record high levels, petrol prices breached the Rs 90 mark in a small Maharashtra town where the price could be the highest in India. A litre of petrol costs Rs 90.02 in Parbhani, located about 500 km away from Mumbai, due to higher local taxes and transportation cost. Meanwhile, in Nagaland petrol price crossed the Rs. 80 mark per litre. As on Tuesday, the highest was in Tuensang at Rs. 80.85 followed by Kiphire Rs. 80.75, Zunheboto Rs. 80.41, Phek Rs. 80.35 and Longleng Rs. 80.10 per litre. In Dimapur, petrol now costs Rs. 78.59 and diesel Rs. 70. 74 per litre and in Kohima petrol price was Rs. 79.35 and diesel Rs. 71.31 per litre. Diesel price was the highest

in Tuensang at Rs. 72.67 per litre. A litre of diesel now costs Rs 77.47 in Mumbai. In Delhi, petrol costs Rs 80.87 and diesel Rs 72.97. As the Centre has made it clear that it will not cut down excise duty, two states have done their bit by reducing state taxes. Petrol and diesel are lower by Rs 2.5 in Rajasthan and by Rs 2 in Andhra Pradesh. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said her government will slash the prices of petrol and diesel by one rupee per litre. Tamil Nadu chief minister K Palaniswami said on Tuesday that the state may consider reducing its taxes on petrol and diesel, as his ruling AIADMK blamed the central government for the rising fuel prices and accused it of “acting” as if it was unaware of people’s problems.

implemented across India. Addressing a seminar on ‘NRC: Defending the Borders, Securing the Culture’, Madhav said the NRC is being updated as part of the ‘Assam Accord’ signed in 1985 under which the government had made a commitment to “detect, delete and deport” all illegal immigrants from the state. “The NRC will ensure the detection of all illegal immigrants. The next step will be delete - means deletion of names of illegal immigrants from voters list and deprive them from all government benefits. The next stage will be deportation,” he said. Sonowal said genuine citizens of India would get adequate opportunities to prove their citizenship and include their names in the final list of the NRC. “The NRC should be implemented in all states. This is a document which can protect all Indians. Those who will be excluded from the NRC in Assam can go to other states. So we will have to take strong step,” he said at the seminar, organised by think-tank ‘Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini’.

Submitted high-profile frauds list to PMO, not aware of any progress: Rajan NEW DELHI, SEP 11 (AGENCIES): A list of high profile cases related to banking frauds was sent to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) for a coordinated action, said former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan in a note to Parliamentary panel. In the note to Chairman of Estimates Committee Murli Manohar Joshi, Rajan said that the size of frauds in the public sector banking system has been increasing, though still small relative to the overall volume of NPAs. “The RBI set up a fraud monitoring cell when I was Governor to coordinate the early reporting of fraud cases to the investigative agencies. I also sent a list of high profile cases to the PMO urging that we coordinate action to bring at least one or two to book. I am not aware

of progress on this front. This is a matter that should be addressed with urgency,” he said. Noting that system has been singularly ineffective in bringing even a single high profile fraudster to book, he said, frauds are different from normal non-performing assets (NPAs). “The investigative agencies blame the banks for labelling frauds much after the fraud has actually taken place, the bankers are slow because they know that

Ban on imported Myanmarese food products DIMAPUR, SEP 11 (NPN): Kohima chief medical officer (CMO) Dr. Ritu Thurr has barred traders from buying and selling food products “imported illegally” from Myanmar in view of blatant violation of Food Safety & Standards Act (FSSA) 2006, Rules& Regulations (RR)2001. Thurr, who is also designated food safety officer, directed the traders to immediately stop distributing and supplying these food products. Failure to comply would invite action as per relevant sections of the FSSA 2006 and R&R 2001. Retailers were also asked to return the food products to concerned distributor(s) or supplier(s) as they too would be liable for penalisation as per the FSSA, R&R 2001 if such items are found in their business premises. The explanation for the ban on Myanmarese food items was that first, they were illegally entered into the market in contravention of the FSSA 2006 and R&R 2001.

The CMO next pointed out that, for example, apple juice, grape juice with brand names “Soo Te”, “Power”, etc, were flooding the market but had no ‘date of manufacture’, no ‘best-before’ date and ‘no name of their manufacturers’. As per information from traders, he said these juices were Myanmarese products and were being distributed through some distributors and suppliers in Kohima. Thurr claimed that all of the products were “misbrand-

sent to Nagaland which would be put on exhibition at different places of Nagaland to create interest among the people and to generate more demand. He said that the health certificate of the pigs to be supplied to Nagaland, would be issued by the Punjab Government. Sidhu also informed that the deliberations for the supply chicken and fish to the Nagaland were also held during the meeting. Sidhu also tabled a proposal to impart training to the progressive farmers and veterinary doctors of Nagaland in Punjab. The delegation also visited the pig farm at Nabha and Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana. ed” imported food products and that, in the eventuality of any food poisoning, it would not be possible to implicate the manufacturers or producers. He, therefore, asked consumers to be aware and remain alert about such food products. Also, besides imported food products, he also said even Indian and local food products should have information like ‘manufacturing date’, ‘bestbefore’ date and name, address of the manufacturer. He added that any com-

plaint regarding food could be filed with the CMO office. The CMO also advised general public to check labels of the imported food products before buying them. He stressed that every such product should have the name and complete address of the importer in India on the package or on the containers. He warned that if any food poisoning occurred with a particular imported food product, necessary action would be taken against its importer. In pursuance to commissioner of food safety’s order (DHFW/FSSA-21/32/200708/3055, dated Kohima, June 22, 2018) and as per Section 25 (1) (iii) of Food Safety & Standards Act, 2006 and Section 2 (2.2) (2.2.2) (6) (iii) of Food Safety & Standards Regulations, 2011 (Packaging and Labelling), Thurr clarified that no person could import any food article into India in contravention of the provisions of the Act or any rule or regulation made under the Act.

once they call a transaction a fraud, they will be subject to harassment by the investigative agencies, without substantial progress in catching the crooks,” he said. The statement assumes significance in the light of Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi, in connivance with certain bank officials, allegedly cheated PNB of about Rs 14,000 crore through issuance of fraudulent Letters of Undertaking (LoUs). A Mumbai branch of PNB had fraudulently issued LoUs for the group of companies belonging to Nirav Modi since March 2011. The total number of LoUs issued to the companies of Nirav Modi, his relatives and the Nirav Modi Group are 1,213, and to Mehul Choksi, his relatives and the Gitanjali Group are 377.

Health Ministry implements HIV, AIDS Act New Delhi, Sep 11 (PTI): A crucial legislation for ensuring equal rights to persons affected by HIV and AIDS in getting treatment, admission in educational institutions and jobs has come into force. The Ministry of Health has announced implementation of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) Act through a gazette notification issued on Monday. The Act, which received Presidential assent on April 20 last year, prohibits discrimination against such persons in accessing healthcare, getting jobs, renting accommodation, and in admission to public and private educational institutions. The moves comes after the Delhi High Court asked the Centre why it has not yet notified the law to prevent discrimination against HIV and AIDS patients despite the statute receiving Presidential assent in April last year. Hearing a PIL that sought immediate notification of the legislation, a bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice C Hari

Shankar had asked the health ministry, “You make a law and are not notifying it. Why?”. The matter was listed for hearing on November 26. “In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section 3 of section 1 of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (Prevention and Control) Act, 2017, the Central Government hereby appoints the 10th day of September, 2018, as the date on which the provisions of the said Act shall come into force,” the notification read. According to the provisions of the Act, no HIV test, medical treatment or research will be conducted on a person without his informed consent and no person shall be compelled to disclose his HIV status for obtaining employment or services, except with his informed consent, and if required by a court order. The legislation has provisions to safeguard the property rights of HIV positive people, he said, adding that every HIV infected or affected person below the age of 18 years has the right to reside in a shared household and enjoy the facilities of the (Cont’d on p-12) household.
