RH steps up demand for Tseminyu distt; warns of protest DIMAPUR, OCT 11 (NPN): Stepping up its demand to upgrade Tseminyu sub-division into a district, the Rengma Hoho (RH) has appealed to the state government to consider the demand, saying “Rengmas deserve due recognition and equal treatment”. In a reminder to state government on its earlier memorandum, Rengma Hoho president, Kenyuseng Tep expressed confidence on the DAN government under the leadership of chief minister TR Zeliang and NPF president Dr. Shürhozelie that the demand of the Rengams would be taken up and justice delivered at the earliest. “We believe their leadership and true statesmanship will not over look to our genuine demand”, he added. The hoho said Rengmas have been snubbed and betrayed since inception of Nagaland state implementation. “Our demand is not for political and social polarization but it is inherent right which cannot be denied,” RH stated. RH also reminded that Rengmas had contributed and taken initiative for the political and historical right of the Nagas and also involved in every level of political development that resulted into creation of the present Nagaland State. The hoho further cautioned that the Rengmas would be compelled to protest if their legitimate rights were denied. RH said: “Our honesty and fairness in upholding the unity and integrity of the Nagas and our sincere effort in maintaining a brotherhood with other Nagas should not be construed as ignorance and weaknesses”.

PM’s Dussehra message on terror L uc k now, O ct 1 1 (IANS): In an obvious reference to Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the time had come to uproot terror and those who patronise terrorists. Addressing a massive Dussehra gathering at the Aishbagh Ram Leela ground here, Modi said terrorism in all forms was anti-humanity and Hindu Lord Rama represented all that was human. It was the Prime Minister’s first public speech after the September 29 surgical strikes by the Indian Army at terror launch pads in Pakistanadministered Kashmir. He made no direct reference to the surgical strikes or to Pakistan that killed an unspecified number of terrorists but made it more than clear which country he had in mind. “Those who spread terrorism need to be annihilated and those who aid terrorism will not be spared either,” Modi said in a speech laced with references to Hindu religion. Modi said India was a country that respected both Lord Krishna who led the Pandavas in the war of Mahabharata and Mahatma Gandhi who propagated non-violence. “We are the people who go from yuddha (war) to Buddha (peace). Sometimes war is necessary, but our path is not that of war, but that of Buddha. “We create balance... I hope the path shown by Buddha will be our final path,”
Narendra Modi being presented a mace as he is welcomed during Dussehra celebrations at Aishbagh Ram Leela in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday. (PTI) he said. The Prime Minister invoked Ramayana and asked people to keep a vigil against terror and fight it the way the vulture Jatayu fought Ravana in a desperate bid to try rescue the abducted Sita from the demon. “We may not be able to become Ram, but we can all try and be Jatayu and give a befitting reply to the nefarious designs of terrorists,” he said, beginning and ending his speech with loud cries of “Jai Shri Ram, Jai Jai Shri Ram”. “If a country of 1.25 crore keeps an eye on every terrorist activity, terrorists will never succeed,” Modi said to loud cheers. He said decades ago when India discussed ter-
rorism, nobody paid heed. The BJP veteran recalled how during a visit to the US years ago, American officials argued that terrorism was a law and order problem. But all this changed after the September 11, 2001 attacks in the US and the 2008 Mumbai carnage that left 166 people dead. “Terrorism knows no religion, no boundaries.” Modi earlier arrived to a grand welcome at the sprawling ground in the heart of Lucknow, the capital of electionbound Uttar Pradesh. Accompanied by union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik and other state BJP leaders, Modi performed ‘aarti’ of
the characters playing Lord Ram and Sita and was later felicitated by the city Mayor Dinesh Sharma, the convenor of the 70-year-old Ram Leela. The Prime Minister was gifted a silver mace, an arrow and a bow. A turban was tied on his head. Modi said effigies of Ravana had been burnt for centuries on this day but “we should rededicate ourselves today to demolish the evils within us as well”. Dussehra, Modi said, also meant to do away with 10 evils within humans and kill the Ravana within that raises its head in the forms of dishonesty, greed, filth, blind faith and ego.

Units back NCSU on Maytas-Gayatri issue DIMAPUR, OCT 11 (NPN): Nagaland Contractors’ & Suppliers’ Union (NCSU) Mokokchung, Phek, Wokha and Zunheboto units have come out in strong support of NCSU’s stand against MaytasGayatri (JV) carrying out four lane project of DimapurKohima NH-29. NCSU Mokokchung unit, through its president L.Tajen Imchen and general secretary Toshiakum Jamir, alleged that Maytas-Gayatri (JV) brought immense hardship to the citizens of several districts by abandoning twolane projects under Special Accelerated Road Development Project Phase-1. They said “abandoning of projects” was considered as “disgraceful and an insult to the citizens”. NCSU Mokokchung has demanded that the company first complete two-lane project in order to avoid “unwanted situation”. NCSU Phek division while extending support to the head office said the allegations levelled against the company [by NCSU head office] were authenticated and based on a fact finding commission. NCSU Phek division president Kuzhosheyi Alex and secretary Razou Lohe said the allegations therefore were not at all unfounded as stated by the commissioner & secretary works & housing. Maintaining that the issue, which had been highlighted in the media frequently, was not new, the NCSU Phek queried where was the commissioner
& secretary works & housing then? The division said remaining silent for the whole time and suddenly taking a “U-Turn” on the same issue was “really unfortunate and mischievous.” It said public know well SARDP works undertaken by the company(JV) were abruptly abandoned “citing silly reasons so as to dupe the Nagas.” NCSU Phek said since SARDP works (Phase-1) were awarded to Maytas & Gayatri (JV), it was their bounden duty to complete the project as per the agreed terms and specifications. Phek division said Nagas as a whole cannot let mega project “slip-out of our hands”, adding that it would continue to pressurise the company into finishing SARDP work before taking up any other projects. It cautioned that the company would be held responsible for any unwanted consequences arising out of the issue. NCSU Wokha Unit also affirmed that the JV should first complete the “abandoned” two lane projects under SARDP Phase-1. NCSU Wokha unit president, Solomon Lotha, and joint secretary A. Lipon Lotha said they also strongly supported the view of NCSU head office that JV had “fooled” the Naga people by “abandoning” the two lane road project. Further, it also “fully” endorsed the view of NCSU that JV should not be awarded any other major projects in the state unless SARDP Phase -1
project was complete. Agreeing with NCSU view that the company “managed to eyewash” the MoRTH in winning four lane project of Dimapur-Kohima, the NCSU Wokha unit maintained that the views expressed by NCSU were “fully in keeping with the interest of the people of Nagaland as a whole.” Fully endorsing and supporting the initiatives taken by NCSU head office, the Zunheboto unit has expressed surprise how JV was awarded another project when they have “abandoned” a major project previously. Unit vice president, Henito Kinimi, also demanded that JV should not be awarded any other major projects in the state unless they completed their previous projects. The unit further questioned the JV and “those in the government” supporting the company, how such a reputed company could abandon a major project and move their priority to another project without the slightest regards to the sentiments of the people affected by their abandoned projects. In this regard, NCSU Zunheboto appealed to the responsible department and the company to complete the “abandoned project” at the earliest. Failure to complete, the unit cautioned that both the department and the company would be answerable to the ire of the affected public and would be solely responsible for any untoward action.

workers to refrain/indulge from campaigning against the Ao Senden’s September 23 decision. The representative cited the 30-day deadline served on Naga Hoho to rescind its endorsement to the state cabinet for recognition of Rongmei as indigenous tribe of Nagaland as sufficient time for deliberation Since there was no positive response, he said the Central Nagaland Tribes Council resolved on July 22 and later reaffirmed at a meeting on August 24, by the constituent three apex tribal bodies-- Ao Senden, Lotha Hoho and Sumi Hoho—to reaffirm the course of action to follow in case of failure by the NH to comply with the demand.

DIMAPUR, OCT 11 (NPN): Over 10 cases of dengue have been reported in Dimapur since the past few weeks, most of which (patients) were suspected to have got the dengue fever from outside the state. As September and October, considered as the peak month for dengue coupled with monsoon, the clogged drainage and stagnant waters in low lying areas of Dimapur, as breeding grounds, could add up to the number of cases. In this regard, the state malaria department has been urged to take up immediate measures to tackle the issue. As per WHO recommendations larvae and fever survey is to be conducted within 400 metres of the area where dengue patients are found. Assam, Manipur and Mizoram have already reported dozens of dengue cases. Dengue and Chikungunya are widespread diseases that require close attention in India, eminent scientist and an international expert on Ebola, Peter Piot has said. “There is a need for countries to build better and more responsive health systems and services. This calls for synergies among NGOs, communi-
ties, inter-governmental coalitions for a more systematic approach. Overall, if we focus more on preparedness and human rights, we will accomplish more,” Piot, co-discoverer of the Ebola virus and Director, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine said during his lecture at the Indian Institute of Public Health-Hyderabad. The lecture highlighted the threat of viruses may be “exacerbated” by the current context of ecological change, climate change, global mobility, international travel and trade, human demographics and behaviour, agricultural and environmental pollution, it said. While the mode of transmission varies from one virus to another, stigma and misinformation are common threads that determine how swiftly the epidemic is controlled, Piot said. “He also shared that media attention has the power to make a significant difference in perceptions. In 1976, when the first Ebola outbreak took place, only a few short articles made it to international news, whereas in the age of 24 hour news channels and social media, connectivity should quicken the pace of reaching out to the public with “risk communication messages”, he said.

State BJP hits back at NPCC DIMAPUR, OCT 11 (NPN): State BJP unit has hit back at NPCC president, K. Therie’s statement published on October 10, stating that the “shallow accusations on BJP government was a visible attempt to highlight its party for the elections”. In a press note, BJP unit general secretary (media) Jaangsillung Gonmei while clarifying on the statement said Therie was “ill informed” as one could read “the desperation between the lines as he tries to achieve his target with biased, hooded lies”. The unit reminded that the BJP was a disciplined cadre based party with no avenues for taking democracy and democratic rights to distorted levels to serve only the selfish needs of the vested interests. It further clarified that there was never a case of anti-Christian atrocity carried out by any of its party branches and departments. If it was so, Gonmei said there would have been a huge hue and cry within the party nationwide. As rules and guidelines in the conduct of party works and programmes for sustaining and preserving a modern society is strictly adhered to, Gonmei said strict disciplinary actions would be been initiated against any party men. BJP rather cited the 2015 reports of the Amnesty International and the International Human Rights Watch on India that the year 2013, under the UPA government, topped as the year of the highest escalation of religious violence in the country. The violence was not confined to Christians alone but also among and between major religions in India mainly Hindus and Muslims, BJP unit stated. (Full text on p-6) K Y M C
