Poll-bound Mizoram want CEO out

AIZAWL, NOV 6 (AGENCIES): Thousands of Mizos led by an umbrella organisation of civil societies and student bodies Tuesday took to the streets in Aizawl, demanding the removal of state chief electoral officer (CEO) S.B. Shashank. Angry protestors also picketed the CEO’s office. Police said the CEO was at home and did not come to his office. The protest forced closure of shops and educational institutions, and transport services also came to a standstill as Aizawl Bus Owners Association and Taxi Drivers and Owners Association and Mizoram Merchants’ Association extended their support. Addressing the protesters outside CEO’s office, Young Mizo Association president Vanlalruata said: “If the central continue to discriminate us and treated us as if we are not Indians, we will find our own way to deal with that.” “This is not the first time we have issues and protest against the Brus and its supporters. We have sent several pleas to resolve the issues many times, but with no proper response. While our CEO’s request was met

CM Rio launches GPS mapping of govt schools

D I M A P U R , N OV 6 (NPN): In a significant step towards computerization and digitization of records by the school education department, the state chief minister, Neiphiu Rio, on Monday launched GPS Mapping of all Government Schools and the Personnel Location System (PLS), a DIPR report stated. Speaking at the launching programme, the chief minister congratulated the department for the exercise undertaken. Rio was of the view that the department should keep visitors’ book in all schools so that visiting or inspecting officials and also dignitaries place their

visits or inspection reports on record. He suggested that the records could be digitised to be viewed by MLAs concerned and be aware of the status of schools within their respective constituencies. Presently, the GPS & PLS information, which can be accessed online through http://.dose-ngl. com has the GPS coordinates of all the schools pinned and marked on Google Maps, with other information like enrolment, facilities such as number of classrooms, power and water connection availability, playground, toilets etc. (Cont’d on p-11)

TASU’s indefinite blockade peaceful Correspondent

MON, NOV 6 (NPN): The indefinite road blockade enforced by Tizit Area Students’ Union (TASU) entered its second day Tuesday with the contractors failing to turn up to explain the delay and abandonment of the construction of NH-702 and ISC road, as demanded by the union. Although the second day of the blockade passed off peacefully without any untoward incident, it was feared that the situation could escalate, if the contractors concerned did not turn up at the earliest. The union had also demanded that the State government, especially the department concerned, give their assurance on the construction of the said road at the earliest. Speaking to this Correspondent, TASU president Noklem said they would wait till Wednesday for the contractors to meet them and the department concerned to give their assurance. He warned that in the event of their failure to do so, TASU would intensify the agitation, including picketing government offices.

SHILLONG, NOV 6: National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against five members of the Myanmar-based NSCN (K) before the special NIA court here in Meghalaya in connection with an abduction case, an official said on Tuesday. The chargesheet against-- Gaisinglung Meiringmei, Khamjang Rongmei, Dimchuingam Ruangmei, Ganthoulung Rongmei and Tanthaoliu Gonmei, was filed on Monday by the NIA Guwahati in a case relating to the abduction of an employee of Bharti

Infra Projects Limited for ransom. Meiringmei, the dy. secretary revenue of NSCN (K), was arrested by Meghalaya police from a rented house at Mookyniang, Khiehtyrshi area in West Jaintia Hills district on May 13. Based on Meiringmei’s leads, the police arrested the other four NSCN (K) members, including Meiringmei’s wife Gonmai from various locations and seized several lakhs of money including incriminating documents. “The employee was kidnapped by NSCN (K) cadres at the behest of Gaisinglung Meiringmei in order to illegally extort Rs. 1 crore,

for his release, to finance the terrorist activities of NSCN (K) for waging war against the state,” an NIA official said. NSCN (K) released the hostage on May 12, 2018 after a ransom of Rs 25 lakh was paid. Around Rs. 15 lacs of ransom money was recovered during the investigation of the case. Police had stated that the NSCN (K) Finance wings appeared to be using Jaintia hills as safe haven to elude the scanner of security forces and carry on its extortion activity and finance network including procuring of arms and ammunition.

DIMAPUR, NOV 6 (NPN): Pastor and staff of Neighbourhood Hindi Church, Midland here have expressed their gratitude to West Police Station for its prompt and swift response in cracking the case of attack on the church on Sunday afternoon by a youth. According to pastor Rev Daniel Shayan, the police on Tuesday morning were able to trace the culprit, who confessed to the act in the presence of his father, officer in-charge of West Police Station and him. Rev Shayan said the culprit was mentally not sound and had carried out the act with no clear motive. After reviewing his mental health and history, the church decided withdraw the case as the father of the culprit agreed to bear all repair expenses, he added. Rev Shayan expressed gratitude to all those who had extended their help and support.

BENGALURU, NOV 6 (PTI): Karnataka’s JD(S)-Congress coalition Tuesday won two of three Lok Sabha seats and both the assembly constituencies in the fiercely fought bypolls Saturday. BJP suffered an embarrassing reverse in Ballari, a seat it had been winning since 2004, but it managed to hold on to the Shivamogga Lok Sabha seat. Buoyed by the victory in the bypolls, Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy and Congress state president Dinesh Gundu Rao Tuesday asserted that they would contest the 2019 Lok Sabha elections together against the BJP. JDS-Congress victory is seen as emphatic endorsement of the coalition by voters. The electoral performance comes as a booster to the combine as bypolls were seen as a barometer of the public mood ahead

of Lok Sabha polls. In Ballari, Congress’s VS Ugrappa won the seat by more than 2.43 lakh votes over BJP’s J Shantha. In Shivamogga, former chief minister Yeddyurappa’s son BY Raghavendra defeated his JDS rival Madhu Bangarappa by 52,148 votes in a closely fought contest. Kumaraswamy’s wife Anitha bagged Ramanagara assembly seat by a big margin of 1,09,137 votes against her nearest rival BJP’s L Chandrashekar. In Jamkhandi assembly segment, Congress candidate Anand Nyamgouda defeated BJP’s Srikant Kulkarni by a margin of 39,480 votes. JD(S) candidate L R Shivarame Gowda scored a huge victory in Mandya, defeating BJP’s Siddaramaiah, a political green horn and a former civil servant by 3,24,943 votes.

Fuel prices cut once again ahead of Diwali

NEW DELHI, NOV 6 (AGENCIES): Petrol price dropped to a two-month low on Tuesday while diesel touched its lowest level in the last six weeks in Delhi after retail fuel prices were cut on Tuesday. Petrol, diesel prices were slashed for the fifth straight day on Tuesday in which petrol became cheaper by 14-16 paise per litre in all the metro cities of the country while diesel rates (Cont’d on p-11) dropped by 8-10 paise per litre. In the national capital Delhi, petrol was sold at Rs 78.42 on Tuesday as against Rs 78.56 on Monday and diesel was retailing at Rs 73.07 compared to Rs 73.16, according to data available on Indian Oil website. Meanwhile, in Dimapur petrol price was Rs.74.26 per litre and diesel price was Rs. 68.63 while in Kohima petrol price stood at Rs.74.97 per litre and diesel was sold at Rs.69.18 per litre on Tuesday.
