Midnight coup in Maharashtra
Pawar betrays Devendra Fadnavis sworn in as Pawar; Sena- CM, NCP’s Ajit Pawar as Dy CM NCP-Cong still have numbers MUMBAI, NOV 23 (PTI): In a dramatic development in Maharashtra, BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday returned as chief minister propped up by NCP’s Ajit Pawar, who was made his deputy, just hours after the new alliance of Shiv Sena, the NCP and the Congress reached a consensus that Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray will be their chief ministerial candidate. Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar were sworn in by Maharashtra governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari at 8 am at a hush hush ceremony here after dramatic midnight developments, leading to the lifting of the President’s rule in Maharashtra. Ajit Pawar’s volte face created fissures in the NCP, whose chief Sharad Pawar distanced himself from his nephew’s dramatic action. Later in the day, the NCP removed Ajit Pawar as the party’s legislature unit head, saying his move was

not in line with the party’s policies. The decision was taken at the meeting of the party’s legislators, where 49 of its 54 MLAs were present, sources said. There has been no official confirmation on reports that the governor has asked Fadnavis to prove his majority by November 30. There were also reports that Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar met the governor separately late last night, after which he sent a report to the Centre suggesting that the President’s rule be lifted. Leaders of the Sena and the Congress cried foul calling the Governor’s action as a murder of democracy. The BJP, however, asserted that it had the “electoral and moral” mandate to form a government in Maharashtra. The swearing in ceremony came as a political shocker, hours after Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray emerged as the Sena-NCPCongress’ consensus candidate for the top post. Number game: Pawar said the Congress, NCP and Shiv Sena, along with independents and smaller parties, have the support of 169 to 170 MLAs to reach the magic number of 145, and they were ready to form the government. BJP has 105.
SC to hear CongressSena-NCP plea today
The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the Congress, Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party’s writ plea against Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari at 11:30 am on Sunday. The three parties had on Saturday moved the SC for an urgent hearing on their plea against the “arbitrary and malafide actions/ decisions” of Maharashtra Governor inviting Devendra Fadnavis to form the government on November 23. The allies alleged that the Maharashtra Governor’s invite to BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis to form the government and the oath-taking ceremony was illegal and sought quashing of his decision to swear-in BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis as chief minister. It also demanded an immediate floor test to avoid “further horse-trading” and a direction to the Maharashtra Governor to invite them to form the government under the leadership of Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, saying they have the support of more than 144 MLAs.
Patton, Pangnyu speak against ‘backward’ outlook Staff Reporter
D I M A P U R , N OV 2 3 (NPN): State deputy chief minister, Y Patton, said that though there was a general perception of Eastern Nagaland being “backward” he refused to believe in the “backwardness of any people or tribe” as God created everyone equally. He was speaking as jubilee guest at the 25 years jubilee celebration of Easter n Nagaland People’s Union Dimapur (ENPUD) at Dimapur District Sports Complex (DDSC) Stadium here Saturday. concentrated efforts from all sections of the society the areas in Eastern Nagaland requiring “special attention” could be made on a par with the rest of the state. The deputy chief minister said that non-attendance of government employees at their places of posting in Eastern Nagaland and other interior parts of the state has immensely contributed to the underdevelopment of those areas. Patton said unruly government employees remained in Dimapur and
Kohima and neglected their duties, towards the service of public, in their respective places of posting. Cautioning such erring government employees of stern action, the deputy chief minister said transfer or posting in such areas should not be taken as “punishment” instead it should be taken as an opportunity to render better service with more enthusiasm. To further develop Easter n Nagaland, the deputy chief minister sug-
gested the 20 legislators from ENPO area to adopt a village each and ensure that developmental activities/ programme under various departments were carried out efficiently. “There are 25 blocks and 332 villages in Eastern Nagaland, if the 20 legislators adopt a village each then we can expect at least 20 model villages emerging out of Eastern Nagaland in every two years,” said Patton. Concurring with minister of Health and Family Welfare, S. Pangnyu Phom, who earlier asked youths not to depend on “backdoor/ political” appointments, Patton also urged youths to appear competitive examinations. The deputy chief minister also underscored that Naga society needed unity irrespective of the geographical and linguistic differences.

tion of governor has a special role to play in realising a cooperative and competitive federal structure. High BP: Manage hypertension during winter season SC decision on Ayodhya case NEW DELHI, NOV 23 (AGENCIES): High blood pressure has become a common issue. A hypertension patient should make many changes in diet and daily routine to manage blood pressure naturally. Many factors can raise your blood pressure like consumption of poor diet, lack of exercise, improper sleeping pattern, obesity and many more. Uncontrolled blood pressure is one of the leading causes of heart diseases. A hypertension patient should not just depend on pills and make necessary changes to fight high blood pressure and factors contributing to hypertension. Some people notice high blood pressure during the winter season. Can the weather affect blood pressure as well? Can cold weather raise blood pressure? Here are the answers explained by experts.
Dr. Manjeetha Nath Das of Internal Medicines, Columbia Asia Hospital explained, “Increase in cases of high blood pressure during winter can affect almost anyone. This is because in winters, low temperatures cause the skin to contract to control body temperature. This causes pressure on the vessels and forces them to narrow down as well. This makes the blood flow through a narrow space in
a higher speed and forces the heart to pump it more forcefully and results in high blood pressure.” Dr. P Venkat Krishnan of Internal Medicine, Paras Hospital Gurugram, also explained, “Elderly people are more prone to increase in blood pressure during winter because the low temperatures make the vessels shrink called vasoconstriction. Also, those who have experienced fluctuating blood
pressure can also witness a rise in blood pressure.” Dr. Krishnan further explained methods to control blood pressure, “It can be managed better with preventive measures. One must maintain a normal temperature inside the house. Before going out, wear enough warm clothes to maintain body temperature. The diet of the patient should be in accordance with Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) comprising of ingredients low in fat and sodium and rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy. Besides, a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise of moderate intensity, such as brisk walking is a must (avoid early morning walks in cold weather) for at least five days a week. In case your blood pressure becomes too high consult your physician immediately.”
not final: Zafaryab Jilani
LUCKNOW, NOV 23 (IANS): Even as the Supreme Court has delivered its verdict on the Ayodhya case, senior Sunni Waqf Board lawyer Zafaryab Jilani is not satisfied with the decision and is planning to file a review petition. He said that this decision of the five judges of the Supreme Court is not final. “The Supreme Cour t has already overruled more than a dozen decisions of these five judges,” Jilani told IANS in an interview. “A b e n c h o f 13 judges has been formed. The Supreme Court never says that the decision of the five judges is final and has
sense,” he was quoted as saying. He pointed out that governor’s office could also be used for specific objectives like spreading awareness about tuberculosis and making India free of this disease by 2025. In their roles as chancellors of universities, governors could help inculcate the values of nation building among our youth and help to inspire them towards greater achievements, Modi said. He was of the view that due to their administrative structure, Union territories can emerge as a role model in terms of development. The prime minister expressed happiness that the latest edition of the conference would see innovative detailed ‘break-out’ discussions in five sub-groups on specific issues and challenges -- tribal issues, reforms in agriculture, Jal Jeevan Mission, New Education Policy and Governance for ‘Ease of Living’. At the 50th annual governors’ conference, 17 first time governors and lieutenant governors, including the Lt. Governors of the newly formed UTs of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, participated.
to be accepted. Those who do not know the history of the law must be surprised to file a review petition.” In response to a question, he said: “My written statement is we will accept the final decision of the Supreme Court. W h a t eve r h a s come, is not the final decision. Article 137 allows that one who is not satisfied with the verdict can file a review petition.” He said: “A review petition on Ayodhya will be filed before December 9. We will choose the legal option of the Indian Constitution. In this case, our struggle will continue till we get ready.”
Ningshen, a ‘lieutenant’ of the NSCN (I-M), was arrested on May 25, 2009, after investigations pointed towards his involvement in the abduction and the triple murder. He was sentenced for life by a trial court in 2014 and the Delhi High Court bench of Justice G S Sistani and Justice Chander Shekhar upheld the trial court’s verdict. “The evidence would show that all the three deceased were beaten so brutally that their heads got deformed,” the court said. “The above finding is further strengthened by CFSL reports. In this backdrop, we are of the view that the appellant needs no leniency and deserves a stricter punishment,” it added.
L&KTU refutes NSCN (I-M) allegation DIMAPUR, NOV 23 (NPN): Reacting to NSCN (I-M) statement published on November 23, the Lahorijan & Khatkhati Transporters Union (L&KTU) has condemned and refuted the allegation against Khehuli Kibami that the latter was extorting money from truck drivers in the name of KK Agency. In a press note, L&KTU president Gamthang and general secretary A. Sharma said the allegation was baseless and therefore urged the NSCN (I-M) authority to make proper inquiry before issuing press statement. L&KTU pointed out that Kibami is the sole proprietor of KK Agency, and a legitimate transport agency. It said the trucks that are enrolled under the agency usually deals in delivering goods to the government within Nagaland and neighbournig states. It also pointed out that the agency has been enrolled in the business association in Assam with trade license (No. GEN/361 dated 7/4/88) issued by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous District Council.
