KOHIMA, NOV 22 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio stressed on preserving and promoting the unique culture and traditions of Nagas, as these reflected and shaped “our values and beliefs”, besides defining the unique identity of the Nagas. Sharing his concern over imitation of Western culture by the youth,

the chief minister called for keeping alive the rich culture and traditions of the Nagas by teaching the young folk songs and dances. Speaking at the unveiling of Tuophema Village Foundation memorial monolith comprising Kense and Kaco clans of the village on Friday, Rio remarked that the Nagas were blessed people and had prospered over the

years through the blessings of their ancestors who had lived their lives with good values and morals. Rio therefore urged the present generation to imbibe and inculcate the good values that “our ancestors” had left behind and live “our lives” well in unity among “ourselves and with our neighbours as well”. He said it was important to know “our history and roots” to have a better understanding of “ourselves” and others, and also to identify as to “who we are and where we come from”. The chief minister further reminded the villagers that they had a huge responsibility as the village was a “tourist village” where people from all walks of life from far and near came to witness its beauty and essence. Lauding the villagers for their efforts in maintaining cleanliness, the chief minister however, said that they could still make it cleaner, adding “a clean village reflects the health and wellbeing of its dwellers”. Narrating a brief history of Tuophema village,

head GB Thekrucha Kaco and GB Salieo Kense narrated how the Kense and Kaco clans wanted to establish a new village. The duo informed the gathering that it was said that Kense clan members used to come from the present Gariphema village, while Kaco clan members came from Phenwhenyu village and met at the present Tuophema village a number of times. However, since it was the head-hunting days and they did not know each others’ intention and language, they pointed their spears at each other and used to depart to their respective villages. One day, through sign language, they both understood that they wanted to establish a new village. Hence, after counting their fingers to seven, they returned on the seventh day and laid the foundation of Tuophema village at the present spot. Initially, the village was known as Hutuophema, but during the British rule it was shortened and rechristened as Tuophema, by which name it was known till today, they added.

Consensus on Uddhav to lead new govt in Maharashtra: Pawar

NEW DELHI, NOV 22 (PTI): The Opposition on Friday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to come clean on the allegations surrounding the electoral bonds scheme and accused the government of legalising corruption. Opposition parties led by the Congress, which protested in Parliament premises and described the issue as a “threat to democracy”, sought to raise the matter in the Rajya Sabha but were not allowed to do by the Chair. Several senior Congress leaders, including leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhur y, Anand Sharma, Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tewari, protested inside Parliament House premises. Tewari said there should be a discussion in the house. “These electoral bonds are a threat to democracy,” he told reporters. MPs held placards asking the prime minister to break his silence on the issue, raised slogans against the government and called for ending the electoral bonds scheme.

MUMBAI, NOV 22 (PTI): The new government in Maharashtra will be led by Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, NCP president Sharad Pawar said on Friday, signalling end of speculation on who will occupy the chief minister’s post as efforts to install a non-BJP dispensation in the state gathered pace. Emerging from a marathon meeting of top leaders of the Congress, the NCP and the Sena, who are making efforts to form government in Maharashtra, Pawar said there was a consensus on Thackeray’s leadership. “The issue of leadership is not pending. There are no two opinions on the issue of chief ministership. There was a consensus on Uddhav Thackeray leading the new government,” he told reporters after the meeting. Asked about Pawar’s statement on Thackeray’s leadership, Sena MLA Eknath Shinde, who attended the meeting, separately told reporters there was “no discussion on that issue”. agenda for governance for the prospective dispensation. “There will be a press conference tomorrow after everything is finalised,” Pawar said. T h a c k e r a y, w h o emerged from the meeting soon after Pawar, said the talks were held in satisfactory manner. “The talks (on government formation) are progressing in the right direction. Nitty gritties are being discussed now. All the three parties will come before you and all details will be shared after finalisation,” he said. The state has been facing a political

crisis after the Sena broke its three-decade-long ties with the BJP after the latter declined to share the chief minister’s post. The BJP and the Sena, which fought the Assembly polls in alliance, had secured a comfortable majority by winning 105 and 56 seats, respectively, in the 288-member Assembly. The NCP and the Congress, pre-poll allies, won 54 and 44 seats, respectively. The combined tally of the Sena, the NCP and the Congress is way beyond the majority mark of 145. The state is currently under President’s rule.

D I M A P U R , N OV 2 2 (NPN): NSCN (I-M) has rejected and condemned what it called “a baseless allegation” by PAC of NCD that its cadres beat up a truck driver and demanded tax of Rs. 15,000. NSCN (I-M) through its MIP advised PAC “not to stretch its hands too far to interfere into the legitimate rights of NSCN in collecting yearly vehicle tax as a part of the sustenance for Naga political struggle.” Narrating the event, NSCN (I-M) claimed that its cadres were on duty enquiring the payment of yearly vehicle tax by the truck drivers. During the process, NSCN (I-M) said one of the truck drivers caused “inordinate delay” much to the displeasure of its cadres on duty. It said that cadres went closer to him and put his hands on his shoulder to have closer talks. However,

the move “created panic and while trying to stay away he hit himself against the truck hurting his head.” It also claimed that neither money was taken from him nor a hand was raised against him. NSCN (I-M) stated that “interestingly” they have learnt that one madam Sema (Khehuli Kibami) as testified by truck drivers has been extorting money amounting to Rs. 4000, 10,000 and 20,000 per truck in the name of KK Agency, Lahorijan, Assam. It stated that the woman using three different mobile phone numbers has been “frequently” threatening NSCN (I-M) personnel on duty that she would “send Indian security forces to arrest them.” Consequently, NSCN (I-M) claimed that Indian security forces managed to apprehend many of its members.

NSCN (I-M) said it has also come to light that Khehuli and Indian security forces were allegedly “working hand in glove to extort money” in the name of KK Agency. Stating that it was a matter of necessity to identify “who this woman extortionist” was, NSCN (I-M) queried “On what valid ground she is collecting money from the trucks in the name of KK Agency? Who owned this KK Agency to use Indian security forces to extort money so blatantly?” In this connection, NSCN (I-M) has asked PAC to be cautious “where they should step into.” NSCN (I-M) further stated that PAC should also draw the line between extortion and tax and “not to go the way to distort Naga political movement by bringing confusion.” K Y M C
