KOHIMA, NOV 8 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) on Wednesday lashed out at the BJP-led NDA government over demonetization, saying Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s justification to curb terror funding through demonetization was “foolish”. As the nation completed one year of the BJP-led NDA government’s demonetization move, NPCC observed a black day at the Congress Bhavan here on Wednesday. Addressing the meeting, NPCC president, K. Therie also insisted on writing a letter to All India Congress Committee (AICC) to demand a Joint Parliamentary Committee to probe into black money, demonetisation and Goods and Services Tax (GST). Therie also accused the State government of not being able to do anything vis-à-vis demonetisation and price rise despite GST. Terming the government as “helpless, voiceless and dumb”, he said it was not fit to represent people as it
could not protect their lives and property. He said the elected members did not know what was going on and travelled in their luxurious cars over potholed-roads without any care for the public. He said the State Finance Minister was absent on the day the GST Bill was passed in the Nagaland Assembly and that the Bill was tabled by another Minister. Therie said the State gover nment tended to maintain close relation with the BJP at Centre with the hope of getting more funds. He, however, questioned whether the State had received any special Plan or non-Plan assistance during the three-and-a-half years. On the contrary, Nagaland did not even receive what was sanctioned, he added and accused the State government of urging people to get closer with the BJP at Centre at the “cost” of Nagas, their faith and history Therie said the BJP talked about development but, after demonetisation, the Centre could not pay
even the budgeted funds for Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS), adding that most of the CSS lapsed and that the little amount that had come was looted by the State government. He said to further destroy the economy of the nation, a “design-less” GST was imposed at various levels, confusing the nation and business community. He also pointed out that inflation could not be controlled because of the wrong policies. Stating that Modi had made an economic disaster by demonetization, the NPCC president said GDP had dipped by 3.1% and losing about Rs 45 lakh crore, while the prices of cooking gas, petrol and diesel had more than doubled. Terming all these as extortion, Therie appealed to the people to dump the BJP-led government into the Bay of Bengal. He said citizens were made to pay double via GST and that in Nagaland there were various taxes, both legal and illegal, implying that Nagas were paying almost 100% in taxes. (Cont’d on p-11)

slides and videos, bowed to the people of the country for supporting his government’s measures to eradicate black money. He termed demonetisation a “decisive blow” to terrorism and Maoism.” “125 crore Indians fought a decisive battle and won,” he said. Modi said that post-demonetisation the stone-pelting incidents in the Kashmir Valley had come down by 75 per cent. Congress attack on demonetisation and GST rollout was led by party Vice President Rahul Gandhi, who targeted Modi in an article in the Finan-
India by converting anger created by joblessness and lack of economic opportunity into communal hatred. He has chosen to hide behind a shallow, hate-filled political narrative. Anger might have brought Modi to power but it will never create jobs or fix India’s institutions,” Gandhi said. As part of efforts to counter the protests by the opposition, Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani addressed a press conference in Lucknow, Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari in Mumbai, HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar in Bengaluru and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Chennai. In Delhi, the AAP held a protest march against demonetisation outside Thyagaraj Stadium while hundreds of Congress workers formed a human chain at Connaught Place. In Maharashtra, all major opposition parties, social organisations, farmer groups, mediapersons, NGOs, civil society activists and individuals organised massive protests. Various forms of protests included processions, funerals, memorial prayers, and ‘shraadh’ of the spiked Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.
PM Modi’s justification on demonetization foolish: NPCC
DIMAPUR, NOV 8 (NPN): Survival Nagaland (SN) held a first state-level consultative meet at Lotha Hoho Ki here on Wednesday. While exhorting the gathering at the meeting, Dimapur Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kesonyu Yhome said the concept of “Survival Nagaland” was a very serious business and those involved should also be serious as the issue dealt with illegal immigrants. “The concept comes with great responsibilities, that one can either use it for a good purpose or misuse it. The risk of misusing it would have serious repercussions,” he cautioned. Yhome also said there should be a distinction between issues of illegal migrants and issues of law and order. He said one of the major concerns was issuance of valid documents to
illegal immigrants by various authorities, because of which most of the suspected illegal immigrants were here with proper legal papers. Yhome stressed government agencies and civil society organisations working in close coordination as most often both work in different directions. With regard to presence of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, he said the local populace was responsible since “we bring in people to get our things done.” In order to tackle such issues, Yhome said the people needed to realise and imbibe the sense of responsibility. He also pointed out that implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) would be successful only if authorities and the community supported and cooperated with each other. Yhoe urged members of Survival Nagaland to steer the movement in the right direction and continue fighting
