Review of govt schools with nil results
Correspondent
KOHIMA, MAY 5 (NPN): Adviser School Education K.T. Sukhalu disclosed that the department would be carrying out a thorough review of government schools which scored ‘nil result in the recent HSLC 2019 exams. It may be mentioned that out of 24 schools that had scored nil/zero passout, 22 were government and two private schools. “Instead of simply downgrading these schools without addressing their core issues, a thorough review will be done,” Sukhalu told Nagaland Post. While admitting that he was “not very happy” with the performances of government schools, the Adviser School Education however added that he was not disappointed either as the teachers had put in their best efforts. Sukhalu said much was needed to be done to tackle the problem but complimented the teachers on their efforts. He also disclosed that once election Model Code of Conduct (MCC) was over, new strategies will be made to ensure that performances of government
schools in HSLC exams were improved by the next academic session. The adviser disclosed that after the MCC was over he will order on a onetime transfer-posting where, except one or two special cases, no transfer will be made till the next academic session. He said in comparison with the 2018 HSLC result, this time there was a slight improvement, but admitted there were still factors which were responsible for nil result. The Adviser also spoke of some schools scoring either 100% pass or ‘Nil’ with poor enrolment one or two candidates. Sukhalu said this needs to be addressed and that schools with very less students would have to be combined into composite school to address the issue. On the other hand, the Adviser said he was pleased by the performances of government Higher Secondary exams where students performed well in maths and science. Sukhalu said he felt that government needs to put more focus on high schools but regretted that owing to litigations within the graduate teachers over the

seniority issue, the School Education department was having a challenging time to deploy headmasters (HMs) and assistant headmasters (AHMs). The Adviser also disclosed that chief minister Neiphiu Rio has expressed concern over the seniority issue of HMs and AHMs, but was optimistic that it will be resolved soon and that all teachers will be posted to their respective postings soon. Sukhalu reiterated that the government’s intention of establishing a school in every village was to ensure quality education. However, he lamented that many parents sent their children to private schools and the reasons of which needed to
be looked into. He also said it was strange, that government teachers who were academically better qualified and trained in comparison with private school teachers, preferred not to admit their own children to government schools but to private schools. Sukhalu said the state government proposed introduction of biometric attendance system in every school to keep check on proxy teachers to the Centre but so far no fund was forthcoming though the IT ministry had assured to try it as pilot project. He also said communit-
ization will also involve other departments for which, a consultative meeting will be held and a committee constituted to monitor whether the policy was helping the beneficiaries. Referring to reports received by the government, the Adviser said the good intention of the government was being misused by some Village Education Committees (VECs) who were exercising powers beyond their jurisdiction. In this regard, the Adviser said some VEC members who were interested in the future of their children were doing well. (Cont’d on p-11)
Govt in a fix over 2,000 untrained teachers Meanwhile, the State government was in a tight sport, on how to deal with untrained teachers, totalling more than 2,000 in both private and government schools. Adviser School Education, K.T. Sukhalu said the government was seized of the matter on terminating the services of more than 2,000 untrained teachers in both government and private schools after March 2019 as per the directive of the Union human resource development ministry. He said the chief minister had written to the MHRD to regularise the services of the above several times but the latter has refused to extend their services. This has placed the state government in a fix as it was grappling to deal with the situation, he added.

NEW DELHI, MAY 5 (AGENCIES): In what seems like a gloomy Sunday for Prime Minister Modi, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, SP chief Akhilesh and Sam Pitroda among others took to twitter to slam Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his comments on former PM Rajiv Gandhi. At a rally in Uttar Pradesh Saturday, Modi targeted the former prime minister in a tirade against his son Congress chief Rahul Gandhi over his allegations around the Rafale fighter jet deal. “Your father was termed Mr Clean by his courtiers, but his life ended as bhrashtachari no 1,” Modi said referring to Bofors scandal. Mamata, who has been campaigning extensively, apologised for the delay in responding to “the audacity of such a statement”. “Sorry for my delayed response on this. I was campaigning. The comments made by ‘Expiry PM’ ModiJi against fmr
PM Rajiv Gandhiji are very unfortunate. RajivJi dedicated himself & laid down his life for the motherland. I condemn the language used & the audacity of such a statement,” she said. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav also hit out at Modi saying, “Election or not, this is basic humanity” to respect the martyred”. The former UP CM added, “The statement by PM indicates levels to which people can stoop for the sake of clinging to power”. PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti also slammed Modi. She said “Rajiv Gandhi lost his life serving our country. He was a true patriot who certainly doesn’t need a certificate from those who lynch in the name of religion”. Gandhis react: Congress president Rahul Gandhi and general secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Sunday criticized Modi for alleging that their father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, was corrupt. Priyanka said the remark reflected Modi’s uncontrolled mad-
ness. “The Prime Minister, who asks for votes in the name of martyrs, yesterday, in his uncontrolled madness, insulted a virtuous man and his martyrdom,” she said in a tweet. “The people of Amethi, for whom Rajiv Gandhi gave up his life, will give him a befitting reply. Yes, Modi ji, this country does not forgive deceitful people.” Congress President Rahul Gandhi said Modi’s “karma awaits” him. “Modiji, The battle is over. Your Karma awaits you,” Rahul said in a tweet. “Projecting your inner beliefs about yourself onto my father won’t protect you. All my love and a huge hug, Rahul.” Meanwhile, Congress moved the Election Commission over Modi’s remark. BJP backs Modi: Union Minister Prakash Javadekar defended Modi on Sunday calling the Congress party ‘dynasts’. “Yesterday, the prime minister told the truth about Gandhi family, especially about Rajiv Gandhi...” Javadekar said.

Oppn questions Modi’s ‘audacity’ to call Rajiv Gandhi ‘corrupt no.1’
MOKOKCHUNG, APR 5 (NPN): Located 18 km from district headquarter town of Mokokchung town and attributed by many travel writers and tourism publications as “perhaps the best kept village in Nagaland,” Mopungchuket is known for cleanliness and community participation in its upkeep. Now, it is inching towards becoming a plastic-free village. Adjacent to Impur Mission Centre established by
American Baptist missionaries in 1894, Mopungchuket has a long history of adopting clean living and sanitation practices. This presumably could be because of its close association with the American missionaries and teachers who resided at Impur Mission Centre then. While the villagers are socially conditioned in general cleanliness and sanitation, the menace of plastic pollution and the question of waste management are relatively new challenges that they recognised as a

potent threat to their cleanliness practices. And taking cognisance of this threat, the villagers have now embarked on a new mission to make their village plastic-free. It is being spearheaded by Youth Ministry of Mopungchuket Baptist Church and actively supported by village council, students’ union and Greensight Project. The Youth Ministry first conceived the idea of initiating the “Plastic Free Project” in January 2017 on a mission mode and resolved to pursue the ideal
as an indefinite mission. This project was conceptualised to be carried out in commemoration of the centenary celebration of the Youth Ministry (1917-2017). Work on the mission began immediately and volunteers of the Youth Ministry placed 100 indigenous bamboo baskets as waste bins in various locations around the village in April 2017 as a first exercise. Since then, they have also been carrying out cleanliness drives in the village on a monthly basis. (Cont’d on p-11)
