NE braces for heavy rains

DIMAPUR, MAY 4 (NPN): North Eastern region is set to experience “heavy to very heavy rain” in the next two days as Cyclone Fani is expected to move towards the North East region. The extremely severe cyclonic storm made landfall in Odisha on Friday morning. Fani is gradually heading towards West Bengal and from there it is likely to move towards the North East, the officials said. According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Fani has hugely weakened and turned into a “depression” only on Saturday evening and exists in neighbouring Bangladesh. Northeastern states have witnessed intermittent rains since Friday due to the impact of cyclone Fani. “Fani is expected to enter Assam and other northeastern states on Sunday causing medium to heavy rains,” IMD Director Dilip Saha told IANS, adding that there was no major threat from the weakened cyclone. The met office here recorded 75.5 mm rainfall during the past 24 hours. IMD suggested that there will likely

Fuel prices hiked after oneday hiatus NEW DELHI/DIMAPUR, MAY 4 (AGENCIES/NPN): After a hiatus of one day, petrol and diesel prices witnessed a hike on Saturday in major cities across the country. Petrol price in the national capital went up six paise from Rs 73.07 on Friday to Rs 73.13 on Saturday. Diesel price in Delhi went from Rs 66.66 per litre to Rs 66.71 per litre after today’s price revision. In Dimapur, petrol price went up six paise to Rs 70.74 from Rs. 70.68 while diesel price also went up six paise to Rs. 64.13 on Saturday. In the state capital Kohima, petrol price increased from Rs. 71.48 per litre on Friday to Rs. 71.55 on Saturday. Diesel also was hiked from Rs. 64.68 per litre to Rs. 64.74 on Saturday. It may be mentioned that due to the daily dynamic pricing regime, retail fuel prices depend on global crude prices on a 15-day average, and the rupee-US dollar exchange rate as India imports 80 per cent of its crude requirements. State-run oil marketing companies Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum revise fuel prices with effect from 6 am on a daily basis.

Fani: death toll in Odisha touches 12 Bhubaneswar, MAY 4 (AGENCIES): A day after the “rarest of rare” summer cyclone Fani ravaged parts of Odisha, the death toll on Saturday rose to 12. A massive restoration-and-relief work was launched on warfooting on Saturday across 10,000 villages and urban areas, officials said. Over 25 lakh families in Odisha are still without electricity as Cyclone Fani destroyed power infrastructure across coastal districts in the state. Around 2,000 emergency workers, along with civil society organisations, personnel of the NDRF, the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and one lakh officials, were engaged in the restoration work, Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik said. Hundreds of engineers and technicians were working to restore power supply, the officials said. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narandra Modi will be visiting Odisha on Monday (May 6) to take stock of the situation. In the wake of Cyclone Fani reaching West Bengal, Modi also discussed the situation with West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi.

reliance on some media reports and some incomplete internal file notings procured unauthorisedly and illegally, the petitioners cannot seek to reopen the whole matter by asking for production of documents in review petition since the scope of review petition itself is extremely limited,” the affidavit said. The affidavit was in response to a petition, filed on the basis of the aforementioned documents and subsequent press reports, calling for a review of the December 2018 clean chit on the Rafale deal, which, it was argued, was a reworked version of a UPAera deal to buy 36 Rafale aircraft from at a higher price tag. In April the court, in a setback to the centre, rejected the plea that the classified documents accessed by the media could not be used as evidence. It allowed the admissibility of three documents as evidence in re-examining review petitions filed against the clean chit verdict. “We dismiss the preliminary objection raised by

Union of India questioning the maintainability of the review petition,” a bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices SK Kaul and KM Joseph said. Part of that petition also included reference to a document cited by The Hindu that said “parallel discussions by the PMO have weakened the negotiating positions by the MoD and the negotiating team”. It also argued that the media articles in question were not the final decision of the government, saying, “The three articles express the views of retired/ individual functionaries and NOT final decision of the Govt. The three articles do not convey the complete official stand of the Govt”. Maintaining that the court had limited role in matters relating to defence, the government said it was nevertheless ready to submit any documents needed. The next hearing on this matter has been scheduled for May 6, which is also the date for the fifth round of polling for the ongoing 2019 Lok Sabha election.

be fairly widespread rainfall over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. IMD added there will be widespread rainfall activity over Arunachal on 5 May. In Tripura, at least six houses were fully damaged and around 140 houses partly damaged in three of the eight districts, said an official of the Tripura Disaster Control Centre. Meanwhile, Airports Authority of India (AAI), North Eastern Regional Headquarters, on Saturday announced that 81 flights have been cancelled across

parts of North East because of Cyclone Fani. AAI announced cancellation of 59 flights in Guwahati, eight in Agartala, two in Dimapur, two in Lilabari, four in Dibrugarh and six in Imphal as a precautionary measure. The Northeast Frontier Railway has also cancelled several trains in the region. The ‘extremely severe cyclone Fani’ has now weakened into a Cyclonic Storm in early morning over West Bengal and lay centered about 60 km Northwest of Kolkata at 0530 IST. It will weaken further into a Deep

Depression and move to Bangladesh by noon. In the next six hours, it will reach as a Depression over North East, a skymetweather report stated. Due to this, meteorologists expect a significant increase in rain activities over North East during the next 24 to 48 hours. Thereafter, the intensity will reduce as the weather system in the form of Fani will further degenerate. The weather will start clearing up after May 6. These rains might induce flash floods and water logging at many places over the region.

D I M A P U R , M AY 4 (NPN): Chakhroma GBs’ Union (CGBU) has expressed disappointment that the state government has not yet released the commission (a little commission from the house tax collected from the villagers) for the year 2018. In a press note, CGBU president Thepfukedo Kuotsu and general secretary Atso Gwizan stated that GBs were neither paid by the government nor do they work on hourly basis, but they were required to report to the call of duty any hour of the day without expecting any payment. The union stated that the little incentive that a GB gets was a red blanket once in two years besides a little commission. However, CGBU lamented that the government was yet to release the commission for 2018. “This is a disgrace upon the government to take away even the little incentive that a G.B gets, and is deemed as a deliberate attempt to add to our misery,” CGBU stated. The union asserted that if remedial step was not taken, the people would lose faith in the government and it would become difficult for GBs to execute their works. CGBU has, therefore, urged the government to intervene and take necessary action at the earliest to enable the GBs continue “functioning with greater zeal and interest.”
