Cyclone ‘Fani’ hits India’s East coast 8 killed, over 12 lakh evacuated B H U B A N E S H WA R / KOLKATA, MAY 3 (PTI): Cyclone ‘Fani’ barrelled through Odisha on Friday, unleashing copious rain and windstorm that gusted up to 175 kmph, killing at least eight people, blowing away thatched houses, and swamping towns and villages, officials said. The extremely severe cyclonic storm ‘Fani’ or the ‘Hood of Snake’ made landfall around 8 am in Puri, with roaring winds flattening huts, enveloping the pilgrim town in sheets of rain, and submerging homes. Though the ‘extremely severe’ cyclone unexpectedly weakened into ‘very severe’ cyclonic storm in a matter of few hours, it left a trail of devastation in large parts of coastal Odisha, with the seaside pilgrim town of Puri being the worst hit. At least eight people have been reported dead so far, senior officials said, adding information was still awaited from many areas.

NASU, AASU want govt to restore Niuland-Dmu road D I M A P U R , M AY 3 (NPN): Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) of Niuland Area Students’ Union (NASU) and Ato Area Students’ Union (AASU) has urged the state government to restore the road between 4th Mile Dimapur and Niuland, which has been left unattended. In a representation addressed to the state chief minister, JCC convenor Yepeto Aye, co-convenor H Hisaka Kibami and secretary Kaka K Holo urged the chief minister to immediately address the hardship faced by the public. In spite of highlighting deplorable road condition through local dailies and reminders to executive engineer (R&B) Dimapur division office, JCC said no visible action has taken place till date. Therefore, JCC said NASU and AASU as empowered by all the frontal organisations of two areas have appealed to the chief minister to intervene and ensure “complete strengthening of the priority road.” JCC cautioned that in the event the responsible authority failed to deliver, it would be forced to undertake “any democratic measures of resentment as deemed fit.”

A view of the destruction caused by Cyclone Fani after its landfall, in Puri, Friday. (PTI)

While three people, including a teenage boy, were reported killed in Puri district, three perished in Bhubaneswar and nearby areas. Flying debris from a concrete structure fatally struck a woman in Nayagarh. An elderly woman died of heart attack at a relief shelter in Kendrapara district, official sources said. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said Puri district, particularly the holy town

where the cyclone first hit the land mass, suffered huge damage. Hundreds of engineers and technicians were working on a war-footing to restore power supply. Work is on to restore r o a d c o m mu n i c a t i o n , thrown into disarray with thousands of uprooted trees blocking the way in innumerable places, Patnaik said. The chief minister said since the cyclone is still passing through Odisha, it

will take time to make an assessment of the damage. The cyclonic system, whose eye is around 28 km wide, moved at around 30 kmph, Director of the Meteorological Centre Bhubaneswar, HR Biswas said soon after Fani made the landfall. But within the system, the winds reached speeds of up to 175 kilometers per hour that gusted up to 200 kmph, leaving in their wake uprooted trees and thatched

DIMAPUR, MAY 3 (NPN): In a major setback to Naga People’s Front (NPF), seven of its Assembly constituency presidents have “unanimously” announced their resignation from the party to join Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP). Apparently, the suspension of seven MLAs recently by the party high command has served as an immediate provocation for them to put in their papers. The seven presidents who announced their resignation are Wangnok (45 A/c), Y Tingtong (46 A/c), Wangka (47 A/c), EY Pongtau (48 A/c), Nyiami Phom (49 A/c), Yanchu Chang (53 A/c) and Wangto Chang (54 A/c). In a press note, presidents of the seven Assembly constituencies alleged that the NPF leadership had become dictatorial and that views and opinions of the masses have been neglected by the party high command. From being a party with

highest regards for the grassroots workers, they said NPF has given up regional ideology and betrayed people’s trust. They cited the suspension of the seven MLAs “against all norms” as a clear case of high command rule and disconnect with the masses. Claiming that the seven suspended MLAs had supported and upheld the regional spirit, they said the remaining NPF MLAs and all party leaders had openly campaigned for and voted for the national party. Ironically, the seven MLAs who supported the regional principle were suspended and even their disqualification from the Assembly was being sought now, they regretted. The seven Assembly constituency presidents also referred to NPF’s hypocrisy by pointing out the party had been partners with BJP since decades and continue to partner the party in Manipur, yet only in Nagaland

it terms BJP as “communal party”. They said it was only when the State’s electorate put NPF in opposition that it termed BJP as communal. They claimed that, as NPF leaders at the grassroots level, they were never informed that BJP was communal all these years, but now suddenly the communal issue surfaced and “our leaders have been suspended”. They expressed surprised that NPF leaders had voted for Congress all these years. While the suspended MLAs stood for regional spirit, NPF’s top leadership gave up regionalism and sacrificed the party’s ideology, they added. In view of the above factors, they explained that they had no option but to resign from the party and join NDPP under the leadership of its president Chingwang and chief minister Neiphiu Rio in order to remain with the ideology and principle of regionalism.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing a rally in Rajasthan’s Sikar Friday, expressed the Centre’s solidarity with people in cyclone-hit states and said Rs 1,000 crore has already been released for relief work.

NEW DELHI, MAY 3 (PTI): One of the two election commissioners had dissented in the decision of the ‘full Election Commission’ to give clean chit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the two speeches made in Maharashtra last month, highly-placed sources aware of the development said Friday. In the last three days, the Commission gave its decision on as many complaints by the Congress against the prime minister, alleging violation of the model code. One of the election commissioners, according to the sources, gave his dissent in EC’s decision to give clean chit to the prime minister on his speech at Wardha on April 1 where he attacked Cong ress chief Rahul Gandhi for contesting from minoritydominated Wayanad seat and his appeal to firsttime voters by invoking the Balakot air strikes and the Pulwama martyrs in Latur on April 9. The ‘full Commission’ which takes such decisions comprises Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora

and fellow election commissioners Ashok Lavasa and Sushil Chandra. The two decisions were then taken based on 2:1 majority as per prescribed law which governs the functioning the of the poll panel, the sources said. The Election Commission (Conditions of Service of Election Commissioners and Transaction of Business) Act, 1991 states that if the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners differ in opinion on any matter, such matter shall be decided according to the opinion of the majority. The Commission transacts its business by holding regular meetings and also by circulation of papers. All Election Commissioners have equal say in the decision making of the Commission. Meanwhile, the Election Commission Friday gave Prime Minister Narendra Modi a fourth clean chit after it found that his speech in Maharashtra’s Nanded on April 6 did not violate the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

DIMAPUR, MAY 3 (NPN): Nagaland Timber Traders’ Union (NTTU) expressed concern over alleged “excessive” taxation imposed on timber-laden trucks at Pfutsero, Peducha and Chümoukedima check gates by

Forest department. Briefing media persons in Dimapur on Friday, NTTU officials said that forest department charges Rs.3000 each at Pfutsero and Peducha check gates and Rs.5000 at Chümoukedima check gate without providing money receipts.

From January 15, 2017 to July 9, 2018, a total of 1116 timber laden trucks were allowed to pass without transit permit, alleged NTTU officials. The union also wondered if the money collected at the gates were going to state government revenue or into the pockets of officials

manning the check gates. They said that as per Naga tradition and under Art. 371 (A), ownership of the land and resources belong to the people. Accordingly, no State government agency has the right to impose tax on timber grown in one’s own forest, NTTU added.

structures, including in the state capital Bhubaneswar. The chief minister said nearly 12 lakh people were evacuated and shifted to safer locations within 24 hours ahead of the cyclone from about 10,000 villages and 52 urban agglomerations. The evacuees have been accommodated in over 4,000 shelters, including 880 specially designed cyclone centres where free cooked food is being served to them, he said. Flight operations at Bhubaneswar and Kolkata airport remained suspended on Friday. Around 220 trains on Howrah-Chennai route have been cancelled keeping in view passengers’ safety, an East Coast Railway (ECoR) official said. As Fani pummelled Odisha, neighbouring West Bengal braced itself for its fury.

Cyclone Fani: NSDMA issues weather update

D I M A P U R , M AY 3 (NPN): NH-29 Land Owners’ Union (Purana Bazaar to Chumukedima) has set a 15-day deadline for the State government to resolve the land compensation issue. Alleging that owners were not being paid compensation for their land in the ongoing four-lane road construction project from

Purana Bazaar to Chumukedima, the union’s office bearers submitted a memorandum in this regard to Dimapur deputy commissioner (DC) Kevekha Kevin Zehol during a meeting with him here on May 1. They conveyed to the DC that the union’s cooperation for successful implementation of the project now depended

on the government’s response on the issue. Besides not being compensation for their land, the union alleged that many commercial buildings were also being demolished in clear violation of high court’s standing order. It warned of taking its own course of action to safeguard the inalienable rights

of the land owners, if the demolition continues. During the meeting, the DC acknowledged rights of the land owners and assured full cooperation to the union by expediting the matter to ensure that the land owners are not deprived of their rights. He also urged the union not to obstruct the ongoing construction activities. Meanwhile, the union appealed to the land owners along NH-29 who have not registered to contact the area in-charge at the earliest without fail. For any query or registration, land owners residing in Kohima have been asked to contact the union’s general secretary (85758 54357), joint secretary (88373 68802) and information secretary (76408 31817). This was stated in a press release issued by union’s information & publicity secretary Kewetso Kenye. K Y M C
