Media report on NRC procedure disturbing, says Supreme Court NEW DELHI, MAY 30 (PTI): In the backdrop of reports that a decorated former army officer has been declared a foreigner by a tribunal in Assam, the Supreme Court on Thursday asked the NRC state coordinator to ensure that fair procedure is adopted in dealing with the claims and objections on inclusion of citizens in the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC). A vacation bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Aniruddha Bose, without referring to any specific matter, said “disturbing” reports have emerged in the media regarding procedure to deal with claims and objections. According to Assam police, Mohammad Sanaullah, a former army officer who had won a President’s medal, was apprehended on Wednesday and sent to a detention camp in after a foreigners’ tribunal declared him a ‘foreigner’. Family members of Sanaullah, a resident of Kolohikash village in Kamrup district, have said they will approach the Gauhati High Court against the tri-

bunal’s order. “There are very disturbing reports in the media. The media is not always correct but sometimes media is right also,” the apex court bench told state NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela. The apex court observed this while hearing the Assam NRC matter. Sanaullah is now serving as assistant sub-inspector (ASI) in border police. A case was registered in 2008 after Sanaullah’s name was listed as a ‘D’ (doubtful) voter in the voters list, according to Kamrup district Additional Superintendent of Police Sanjib Saikia. After the verdict of the tribunal, Saikia said police according to laid down procedure, picked up Sanaullah

and took him to the detention camp in Goalpara district to be lodged there. Before proceeding to the camp, Sanaullah told waiting journalists that he is an Indian citizen and has all the necessary documents of his citizenship. He said he served the country’s interests for 30 years (1987-2017), joining the force as an official of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering department and was also awarded with President’s Medal in 2014. Congress on Thursday hit out at the BJP government over the issue, saying it shows the “high-handedness and flawed manner” in which the NRC exercise is being implemented in the North Eastern state.

NEW DELHI, MAY 30 (PTI): BJP ally JD(U) will not join the new Narendra Modi government, its spokesperson Pavan Varma said on Thursday, in what appears to be a sign of differences with the saffron party over the number of ministerial berths offered to it. “We are not joining the government. This is our decision,” Varma, who is also the general secretary of the JD(U), told PTI. The BJP was offering one cabinet berth to the JD(U) and sources said the regional party was also unhappy with the portfolio offered to it. The JD(U), which is headed by Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, was not a part of the first Modi government as well.

LOU irked by statement over compensation issue DIMAPUR, MAY 30 (NPN): Land Owners’ Union (LOU) NH-29 (Purana BazaarChümoükedima) expressed dismay over how certain individuals and organisations viewed the compensation issue as a very “unreasonable demand”. In a press release LOU president K Vishepu Assumi and general secretary Vichosel Rhutso, said the union wanted to know whether it was for the first time that landowners raised the issue of compensation, and whether the landowners of entire Nagaland also forfeited the compensation issue. Demanding to know what was “so gross” in seeking compensation when the landowners involved were willing to ac-

commodate the government’s requirement by moving out of their comfort zone, LOU wanted to know whether the words “rehabilitation, displacement and resettlement” ever made sense to such individuals and organisations?. LOU also said those individuals who were most vocal on the issue ought to think twice before “blabbering”, if it involved their plots. The union further expressed dismay on how “certain vested individuals and organisations” talk of magnanimity, benignity and renunciation, without considering the plight of the landowners involved. LOU pointed out that the affected landowners also included a widow.
