D I M A P U R , M AY 2 8 (NPN): In a major development that is likely to auger well for bamboo industry in Nagaland in particular and the entire Northeast in general, an India-Taiwan Bamboo Technical Centre has been proposed to be set up here. This was proposed during a meeting between chief minister Neiphiu Rio and ambassador of Taiwan to India Chung Kwang Tien at Nagaland House in New Delhi on Tuesday. During the meeting, it was also proposed that the centre will be set up by Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency (NBDA) in association with Taiwan-based bamboo companies and experts in areas of R&D, technology transfer, skill development, investments in bamboo sector, marketing, etc. It was decided that a team from Taiwan will visit Nagaland and work out modalities to establish the centre at the earliest, even as both the parties agreed to work out details for formalising a MoU at the earliest to promote this cooperation.
KOLKATA/BENGALURU, MAY 28 (AGENCIES): Less than a week after stunning the Trinamool Congress by winning 18 of 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal, the BJP on Tuesday served fresh jolt to Mamata Banerjee. Mukul Roy, who was once a close confidant of Mamata, herded a group of two TMC MLAs – Subhrangshu Roy, Tusharkanti Bhattacharya – and over 50 councilors in to the BJP. Another MLA -CPM’s Debendra Nath Roy also jumped the ship. Speaking to reporters at the BJP headquarters with the crowd of new joinees behind him, BJP national general secretary Kailash Vi-
jayvargiya said defection has just begun and more leaders from Mamata’s party will join the BJP in coming days. “Today was just the first phase. Like the elections were held in seven phases in West Bengal, joining the BJP would also happen in seven phases,” Vijayvargiya, who was in-charge of Bengal for Lok Sabha elections, told reporters. Adding to Vijayvargiya’s statement, Mukul Roy, whose son Subhrangshu was among the TMC leaders joining the saffron party, said Mamata’s party won’t be in a position to get the post of Leader of Opposition after Bengal Assembly election which is scheduled

NEW DELHI/DIMAPUR, MAY 28 (PTI/ NPN): Petrol and diesel prices started rising soon after the last phase of the general election concluded, and have increased by 7080 paisa per litre in the past nine days. Prices have been on the rise since May 20, a day after the final phase of polling for the Lok Sabha elections ended. The price of petrol has risen by 83 paise per litre in the nine days and diesel by 73 paise, according to price notifications of state-owned oil companies. Rates were largely range-bound during April and May despite a rise in oil prices in the international market. Domestic petrol and diesel prices were hiked across Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata on Tuesday. While the increase in petrol prices in the four metros was to the tune of 11 paise per litre, the rates of diesel were raised by five
to be held in 2021. Subhrangshu was suspended by the TMC for anti-party activities recently. Tuesday’s exodus of TMC leaders came days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during one of his election rallies, had claimed that 40 lawmakers from Mamata’s party were in touch with him and would join the BJP after Lok Sabha elections. “Didi, even your MLAs will desert you when the results of this election are out. Your 40 MLAs are in touch with me and all your MLAs will desert you once the BJP wins the election. Political ground has slipped from under your feet,” PM Modi
Two senior leaders of the Congress have rushed to Karnataka Tuesday to stabilise the party’s ruling coalition with HD Kumaraswamy’s Janata Dal Secular, which has been wobbling after being worsted by the BJP in the recently concluded elections. The coalition has managed to scrape together only two of the state’s 28 seats. Now both parties -- whose local leaders have been sniping at each other since coming to power last May -- are bracing for poaching from the BJP. A cabinet expansion is being planned to keep hold of those who might be on their way out. KC Venugopal and Ghulam Nabi Azad, have been tasked to meet Congress leaders including Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM

paise per litre compared to the previous day’s fuel prices, according to notifications from Indian Oil Corporation. In Delhi, petrol now costs Rs 71.86 per litre, up from Rs 71.03 price on May 19. Similarly, a litre of diesel costs Rs 66.69, up from Rs 65.96 a litre on May 19. In Dimapur, petrol per litre cost Rs.69.60 and diesel Rs. 64.17 per litre and in Kohima a litre of petrol cost Rs. 69.90 and diesel Rs.64.45 per litre. While state-owned fuel retailers Indian Oil Corp (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL) had in the past completely frozen rates during times of elections, they during the Lok Sabha polls moderated the revision by not passing on all of the desired increase in rates to consumers, industry sources said. They are now recovering the same.
The three firms had in the past refrained from increasing oil prices during elections. They took a 19-day price freeze on petrol and diesel ahead of the Karnataka polls in May 2018 despite international fuel prices going up by nearly USD 5 a barrel. But, no sooner were the elections over, they rapidly passed on to customers the desired increase -- over 16-straight days post-May 14, 2018, petrol price jumped up by Rs 3.8 per litre and diesel by Rs 3.38. Similarly, they had stopped revising fuel prices for almost 14 days ahead of Assembly elections in Gujarat in December 2017. These companies had also imposed a freeze on petrol and diesel prices between January 16, 2017, and April 1, 2017, when Assembly elections in five states, Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Manipur were held.

D I M A P U R , M AY 2 8 (NPN): Coming down heavily on the practice of engaging “proxy” teachers, school education adviser K Tokugha Sukhalu said the school education department was trying to curb the practice and urged village and colony level authorities not to compromise on the issue. Speaking at the inaugural programme of Government High School (GHS) at Thilixu village on Tuesday, Sukhalu lamented that teachers in many government schools across the State were keeping “proxy” in full knowledge of the village and colony authorities. He appealed to the school management committees (SMC), village education committees (VEC) and elders not to compromise on teachers’ service and ensure that teachers

the rally began from Bazaar junction. In their speeches, representatives of three organisations highlighted the need for peace, especially in a place like Tobu where such incidents are occurring despite repeated appeals by the community to maintain peace. Condemning the act of violence that threatens to disturb the peaceful atmosphere of Tobu, Konyak Union Tobu branch vice-president Tiyeang Ngontang explained that the objective of the rally was to send a strong message towards any group responsible for the May 26 incident that people were against such acts of violence in the area. Addressing the gathering, TASU president Sangti Konyak expressed his condolences on behalf of people of Tobu area to the bereaved of the two Assam Rifles jawans killed in the “unfortunate incident”. He stressed
that no development can happen without peace and that such incidents always harmed the peaceful coexistence among the community. The rally that stared at 9 am was attended by around 1,000 participants, mostly women. After the rally, the participants went to ADC office to submit a memorandum addressed to Mon deputy commissioner, demanding urgent intervention of the administration to maintain peace as well as upgrade Tobu police station to SDPO office. The memorandum was handed over to the ADC at his office by TASU president Sangti Konyak. This was stated in a press release by TASU press & corresponding secretary Moba AS. Meanwhile, according to intelligence sources, the attack was reportedly carried by Aug Yung led NSCN (K) cadres. Sources said an eight member team carried out the ambush.
ing “proxies”. Mentioning that the State and society would never progress if such trend continued, Sukhalu reminded the teachers that the onus was on them to nurture bright young minds who would one day lead the State. He also informed the gathering that the school education department was undertaking “massive exercise” in regard to rationalisation of teachers, adding it

would be done in stages. He explained that through this exercise, the department wanted to ensure that all high schools and higher secondary schools, GMS and GPS had adequate number of teachers. Admitting that the department had “excess teachers”, the adviser said it was unfortunate that all teachers wanted to be posted in urban areas only, preferably Dimapur. Stating that transfer issue too had become a “very big challenge” for the department, he advised the teachers not to just “run around for transfer” but be dutiful in their place of posting. He asserted that it was the prerogative of the department to reward performing teachers with posting of their choice. He announced that teachers who keep running after transfer without teaching would not be entertained. (Cont’d on p-7)
ANCSU demands resignation of director Technical Education DIMAPUR, MAY 28 (NPN): All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) has demanded immediate resignation of director of technical education due to the latter’s failure to furnish information on alleged misappropriation of scholarship funds. In a letter on May 25, the union warned the director and the directorate not to add “more fuel to the fire” on the matter that occurred due to the department’s “corrupt way of functioning”. ANCSU cautioned that failure to comply with its demand would invite strong retaliation from the student community. It said it would not accept any excuses or clarification on the issue. This was stated in a press release issued by ANCSU president Katho P Awomi and general secretary Vimeyiekho Vitso. In a letter to the director Technical Education, ANCSU
president Katho P. Awomi and vice president Vimeyiekho Vitso pointed out that despite seeking information on misappropriation of scholarship funds, the department failed to respond and rather made attempts to shield those officers and staff involved. They maintained that since the director was accountable for the misappropriation in the department, the union was convinced that holding the office as director “is nothing less hat a threat to the welfare of the Naga students’ community”. Failing to fulfill the demand of the union, ANCSU said the director will be held fully responsible for any untoward incident that my occur. ANCSU stated that the union was compelled to demand the director’s resignation since the latter had continually failed to uphold and protect the welfare of the students’ community. K Y M C
