Post LS polls: Turmoil in Cong Rahul insists on quitting; fate of Raj and K’taka govts uncertain

NEW DELHI, MAY 27 (AGENCIES): Faced with a colossal electoral defeat, the Congress was on Monday riven by internal turmoil with Rahul Gandhi insisting on quitting as party president while its governments in Rajasthan and Karnataka teetered on the brink. In the midst of the disquiet, several state Congress chiefs, including Punjab’s Sunil Jakhar, Jharkhand’s Ajoy Kumar and Assam’s Ripun Bora, also offered to resign following the party’s drubbing in the elections, party insiders said. Congress’s Rahul Gandhi has categorically said that the party will have to find a new chief as he won’t change his mind about stepping down from the post of the party chief, sources told NDTV. Gandhi is understood to have conveyed to several leaders that it is time for the grand old party to look for a new chief.

Hailing mother India and spitting in public cannot go together: Modi VARANASI, MAY 27 (AGENCIES): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday gave a lesson in nationalism saying one cannot hail mother India and in the same breath spit in public, which is not acceptable, ANI report stated. “We say ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ and spit (in public) in the same breath after chewing Banarasi paan (betel). What kind of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ is this?” he said at a gathering of BJP workers here. Cleanliness has been one of the most important campaigns of the BJP-led NDA government since it came to power in 2014. In his speech today, Modi asserted that government property belongs to everyone and appealed people to preserve. “Whatever is of the government is ours. We clean our scooter even if it is so old, but when we board a government bus, we damage the seats. We do not feel rest unless we make a considerable hole in the bus seat,” he said. “The moral of the story is that this country and its properties belong to us,” he said amidst laughter in the audience.

Sources also say Rahul Gandhi has not changed his mind, despite several Congress leaders pleading with him over the weekend and asking him to go for a full overhaul. Officially, the party told reporters on Saturday that Rahul Gandhi’s resignation offer had been “unanimously rejected”. The Congress won only 52 seats in the Lok Sabha polls, just six more than its 2014 tally. The party could not open its account in 18 states and union territories. At the recent Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, Gandhi accused

three senior leaders-- Ashok Gehlot, Kamal Nath and P Chidambaram — of placing their sons above the party. His sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said the entire top brass of the party left Rahul Gandhi alone to fight it out against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Crisis in Rajasthan, K’taka: As the party grapples with a severe existential crisis, its governments in both Karnataka and Rajasthan face a tough time with reports suggesting the BJP may try to wrest power in both states. It is learnt that Congress MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi and Dr Sudhakar visited BJP leader S M Krishna’s residence in Bengaluru on Sunday along with several other BJP leaders and they are understood to have deliberated on dethroning the incumbent dispensation. Sources said a number of Congress legislators in Karnataka are understood to be unhappy over the party’s electoral loss. In Rajasthan, there have been reports of internal turmoil with several ministers demanding fixing of accountability and seeking action against those respon-

sible for the poll debacle in the state. The Congress drew a blank in Rajasthan as NDA won all 25 seats. In Karnataka, where it formed a government with the JD(S) in May last year, the Congress managed to win only one Lok Sabha seat out of 28. The party was also crushed in most of the 29 states, including Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, where it had defeated BJP in the assembly polls in December. As crisis beset the opposition party, its chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala on Monday urged everyone to respect the sanctity of the CWC meeting and asked the media not to fall into the trap of “conjectures, insinuations, gossip and rumour-mongering”. Surjewala said it is a democratic forum for exchange of ideas and taking corrective action. It was a “closed-door” meeting and any speculation about it was unwarranted and uncalled for, he added. He was reacting to news reports about happenings at the May 25 meeting, the first of the CWC after the Congress’s humiliating defeat in the parliamentary polls.

GUWAHTAI, MAY 27 (AGENCIES): After a slight dip, pre-Monsoon weather activities over the North Eastern states-- Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura have once again picked up pace. At present, a cyclonic circulation is persisting over Assam and adjoining parts

of Meghalaya. Moreover, humid winds blowing over the region from Bay of Bengal are continuously increasing moisture in Northeast India. Due to these weather conditions, the region may expect light to moderate rain and thundershower activities for the coming two to three days. From May 30, rain in-

tensity will be heavy to very heavy at times particularly over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland. Meanwhile, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura will also witness good rains, but intensity will be slightly less in comparison to the northern states. Thereafter, the intensity of pre-Monsoon weather

activities over the North Eastern states will keep on increasing and heavy to very heavy to continue until the week of June. On June 1, the region will experience further increase in the rain and thundershower activities. During this time, in the wake of such widespread heavy rains, many disruptions like water logging or flash floods may occur in parts. However, these rains will continue till the onset of Southwest Monsoon over North East. It needs mention here that in the meteorological parlance, a cyclonic circulation (Cycir) is an atmospheric wind flow in upper levels associated with any low pressure system and under it, the wind flow is counter clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.

of violating cease-fire agreement

D I M A P U R , M AY 2 7 (NPN): Making a clarification over what was described as “confusions and doubts” created by the ongoing joint political military operation by India and Myanmar against NSCN/ GPRN (Aung Yung), the MIP in-charge ‘maj’ Joseph Lamkang has accused the Myanmar army (Tatmadaw) under northern command and comprising of eight battalions of complete violation of cease fire ground rules by forcibly intruding into the NSCN/GPRN council headquarter at Taka on January 29, 2019. However, MIP said the NSCN/GPRN Naga army maintained restraint and vacating the headquarters. In the midst of the confusion created, MIP said some senior party members (cease fire delegation team)

and Naga army cadres were arrested by the Myanmar military under false charges and were being confined at Khamti prison till date. MIP accused the Myanmar army of creating a “war-like situation in the Naga areas” by deploying massive military forces with heavy artillery causing havoc and uneasiness among the Nagas. It cited how, a few days back, the Tatmadaw had indiscriminately fired artilleries and heavy guns on jungles and nearby populated areas in Konyak region, in order to spark fear and panic in the minds of “revolutionaries and innocent public.” For the record, it said NSCN/GPRN had signed a legal cease fire agreement with Myanmar at the invitation of the latter as two

entities on April 9, 2012 and that ever since the NSCN/ GPRN has been sincerely honouring the cease fire ground rule. According to MIP, the cease fire ground rules included:1. cessation of all hostilities; 2.cease fire office at the designated camp at Khamti town;3.providing information on troop movements within each other’s jurisdiction;4.free passage for NSCN/GPRN members without arms and uniform within Myanmar and 5. That both Myanmar government and NSCN/ GPRN would cooperate and work together to promote peace and development in Naga areas. MIP said the cease fire was hence “not secretive but crystal clear” with no hidden strings attached. (Cont’d on p-7) K Y M C
