PM takes no questions at first PC

NEW DELHI, MAY 17 (PTI): In his first appearance at a press conference, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted in opening remarks that BJP will come back to power with a full majority on its own, but refused to take any questions, citing party discipline. In a surprised move, Modi showed up on the dais for a scheduled press conference by BJP president Amit Shah, who gave a detailed report card on the performance of NDA government as well as party’s extensive electioneering. Modi diverted questions, saying he will not answer because the press conference is being addressed by Shah, and in BJP’s system, discipline has to be followed. On the BJP’s performance, Modi said, “the election has been amazing (shandar). Elections were held in a positive spirit. A government with full majority will come back after remaining in power for five years...” Cong mocks PM’s first PC appearance: Congress on Friday mocked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not taking any question in his first appearance at a press conference, with party

president Rahul Gandhi saying “showing up is half the battle”. The Congress charge against Modi and Amit Shah was led by Gandhi after the PM showed up on the dais for a scheduled press conference by the BJP chief, who gave a report card on the performance of the NDA government as well as party’s extensive electioneering. “Congratulations Modi Ji. Excellent Press Conference! Showing up is half the battle. Next time Mr Shah may even allow you to answer a couple of questions. Well done,” Gandhi tweeted. Gandhi said it is “very impressive” to see PM address his first press confer-

ence a few days before Lok Sabha results are out. After Godse row, BJP pushed to corner: As campaigning for the 2019 general elections wound down on Friday, the BJP was pushed into a corner and forced to ask three of its leaders to explain their comments on Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse, as the Congress questioned the prime minister’s silence on the row. Pandora’s box opened on Thursday with BJP’s Bhopal Lok Sabha candidate and Malegaon blast accused Pragya Singh Thakur lauding Godse as a “patriot” and issuing an apology at night saying she respected him

Mnp BJP refutes NPF’s claims IMPHAL, MAY 17 (PTI): Manipur BJP spokesperson, Ch Bijoy Friday refuted the claims of NPF that saffron party had never respected the spirit of alliance since the formation of government in Manipur. Rebutting Manipur state NPF unit president, Awangbou Newmai’s assertions, Ch Bijoy maintained that NPF did not want any ministerial berth while joining the alliance, but now, it seems, the party has several demands. Of the four NPF MLAs in the Assembly, Loshü Dikho, who won from the Mao Assembly seat, is a cabinet minister. “The allegations made by the NPF are totally baseless and unfounded. All possible cooperation has been extended to our coalition partners for smooth functioning of the government,” he added. Talking to PTI, Awangbou Newmai, the state unit chief of the Naga People’s Front (NPF), claimed that the BJP “looks

down” on its alliance partners. “The BJP has never respected the spirit of alliance since the formation of government in 2017. There have been instances when their leaders have refused to consider our members as alliance partners,” he said, without elaborating. Newmai also said that the saffron party did not live up to the promises it made to its coalition partners. “The NPF has always considered the BJP as its big brother, but that did not stop the saffron party from bluffing to us. We haven’t got our due respect,” he claimed. Denying the allegation, the BJP said it has extended all possible cooperation to its partners to ensure smooth functioning of the government. The NPF Central has called for a meeting on May 18 at Kohima where the party would decide if it will continue to stay in the coalition or withdraw support from the BJP led government in Manipur.

and his work for the country cannot be forgotten. As controversy raged, BJP president Amit Shah said the party has taken serious note of the statements from Union minister Anantkumar Hegde, Pragya Thakur and its Karnataka MP Nalin Kumar Kateel. Stating that comments were against party’s ideology, Shah asked the party’s disciplinary committee to submit a report on the issue in 10 days for further action. Can’t forgive Pragya for Godse remark, says Modi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday said he will never forgive BJP candidate Pragya Singh Thakur for insulting Mahatma Gandhi by calling his assassin Nathuram Godse a true patriot. Modi told a TV channel during his last rally here ahead of the last phase of voting in Lok Sabha polls, Modi also said her comments were detrimental to society. “The remarks made about Gandhiji or Nathuram Godse are very bad and very wrong for society,” he said. “She has sought an apology but I would never be able to forgive her fully,” he added.

Cong president questions ‘partial EC’ NEW DELHI, MAY 17 (AGENCIES): Congress president Rahul Gandhi Friday alleged that the Election Commission of India (ECI) has been partial or biased towards the other parties in the Lok Sabha Election 2019. The Election Commission’s role has been biased this Lok Sabha election, Rahul Gandhi said in a press conference. Rahul Gandhi alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was allowed to say anything while the others were stopped from saying the same thing. He also said that it seemed like the Lok Sabha Election 2019 schedule was made keeping PM Modi’s poll campaigning schedule. “Role of the Election Commission has been biased in this election. Modi ji can say whatever he wants to say while we were stopped from saying the same thing,” Rahul Gandhi said. Rahul Gandhi said, “Partiality is definitely there. It seemed that the Lok Sabha election schedule was made for PM Narendra Modi’s election campaigning. This is in front of everyone and the country understands this.”

DIMAPUR, MAY 17 (NPN): The 53-year old Dimapur Gover nment College, among the oldest in the state, is gripped with admission mania as around one thousand candidates who passed the recent HSSLC examinations, literally fight to be among the 360 fortunate ones to get admission. According to college sources, some 3000 admission forms were given out of which around 725 applied for 360 seats under various academic disciplines. Though a government college, DGC is at par with the best in the state

in terms of teaching quality and other facilities and so the rush for admissions is not difficult to understand. However, the DGC is still grappling with inadequate classroom facilities, a problem that the higher ups were apprised and who in turn promised to do the necessary to facilitate increase in intake. At present, the college is running with limited classrooms for the ever growing student population due to which it is only offering a total of 360 seats (Arts stream) for the new academic year 2019-2020. Out of 360 seats, 20 seats (5%) are reserved for the Schedule Castes (SC),

Other Backward Class (OBC), General, People with Disability (PwD) and other boards as per National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) requirement and 340 seats are open for all. When Nagaland Post spoke with DGC principal Kavili Jakhalu, she said that out of 725 student applicants this year, only 360 will be selected purely on merit. She admitted that admission time was the most stressful as the college not only have to turn down many deserving students, but also with public pressure to accommodate more students. (Cont’d on p-7)
