63.3% turnout in phase 6 polls

NEW DELHI, MAY 12 (AGENCIES): A voter turnout of 63.3 per cent was recorded as millions came out to vote in the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha elections. The sixth phase of the Lok Sabha election was held in 59 parliamentary constituencies spread across seven states- Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, West Bengal, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi and Jharkhand. Amid widespread violence in the sixth phase of polling on Sunday in West Bengal, 80.16 per cent of the electorate voted. A BJP worker, identified as Ramen Singh (30) from Gopiballabpur in Jhargram constituency, sustained a grievous head injury after being hit with an iron rod. He was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead. In West Midnapore district’s Ghatal, BJP candidate Bharati Ghosh was forced to take shelter inside a temple beside the Keshpur police station after being heckled and chased by Trinamool supporters, who accused her of instigating disturbance in the area. The 10 Lok Sabha Haryana recorded a voter

Fuel prices cut for fourth straight day NEW DELHI, MAY 12 (AGENCIES): Oil-marketing companies reduced petrol and diesel rates across the four metro cities on Sunday for the fourth straight day. Petrol was priced at Rs. 71.73 per litre in New Delhi, while diesel rates stood at Rs. 66.11 per litre. In Kolkata petrol cost Rs. 73.79 per litre and diesel Rs. 67.86 per litre. In Nagaland’s commercial hub, Dimapur, petrol cost Rs. 69.36 per litre while diesel cost Rs. 63.52 per litre. In Kohima, petrol per litre cost Rs.70.22 as on Sunday and diesel Rs. 64.19 per litre. State-run oil marketing companies Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum revise fuel prices with effect from 6 a.m. on a daily basis. As per the daily dynamic pricing regime, domestic fuel prices depend on international fuel prices on a 15-day average, besides the value of the rupee. This is because a large proportion of country’s requirement is met through imports. Globally, Brent crude oil settled 23 cents, or 0.4 per cent, higher at $70.62 a barrel, but posted a weekly loss of 0.3 per cent.

percentage of 64.72 per cent, with Kurukshetra and Hisar constituencies witnessing brisk polling. In Delhi, on the other hand, 57.50 per cent of the electorate voted. Uttar Pradesh recorded the lowest with 54.17 per cent turnout. Complaints about malfunctioning EVMs poured in from several places in Delhi where voting is underway. Aam Aadmi Party’s Malviya Nagar MLA Somnath Bharti alleged that EVMs at booths 116, 117 and 122 were not functioning. “EVM in booth 132, Hauzrani is showing 50 votes without anyone casting any vote in the machine

n EVMs at booths 116,117, 122 in Malviya Nagar not functioning,” Bharti tweeted. Delhi Chief Electoral Officer Ranbir Singh said 5.5 per cent EVMs were replaced in the morning in the capital city after the EVMs were found defective during the mock polls. The official voting time is from 7 am to 6 pm, but it is expected to go well beyond that as polling started a bit late at some places, the officials said. President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi, External Affairs Minister

Sushma Swaraj, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, former CM and Congress’s North-East Delhi candidate Sheila Dikshit were among the prominent people who voted in Delhi in the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha election. In Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh Lok Sabha constituency, a presiding officer was removed following complaints by the Samajwadi Party (SP) workers. A report has been sought from the district magistrate, state Chief Electoral Officer L Venkateshwar Lu said. In Bhadohi, BJP MLA Dinanath Bhaskar allegedly beat up a presiding officer in the Aurai assembly segment, accusing the official of deliberately slowing the polling process. The incident took place at a primary school in Lakshmana village. No untoward incident was reported from any part of Jharkhand, an election official said. The state recorded a voter turnout of 64.50 per cent. The votes polled in the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha election will be counted on May 23.

Oppn rift before LS polls end; Didi, Mayawati may skip meet N E W D E L H I , M AY 1 2 (AGENCIES): At least three key opposition leaders - Mamata Banerjee, Mayawati and her ally Samajwadi leader Akhilesh Yadav- are likely to skip the post-election opposition meet in Delhi that will be hosted by the Congress. Sources said Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu, who had gone to Bengal last week and met Mamata Banerjee, received a negative when they discussed the meet. There is no need for any meeting before the results come out on May 23, she told Mr Naidu, sources said. Negative responses have also come from Mayawati. The reason, sources indicate, is the inevitable question of the Prime Minister’s post in case of a favourable result for the opposition. While all opposition leaders have so far carefully avoided questions on the top job for the sake of unity, both Mayawati and Ma-

mata Banerjee harbor prime ministerial ambition. Congress chief Rahul Gandhi’s name has already been proposed for the post by several leaders, including DMK chief MK Stalin. Both have been avoiding close association with the Congress, staying out of an alliance with the Congress in their states, even if they are allies at the national level. Mayawati has made no secret of her disdain of the Congress. Not only has she left the party out of the Uttar Pradesh alliance, over the last five months, she has repeatedly threatened to pull the rug from the Kamal Nath government, which has a wafer-thin majority in Madhya Pradesh. Mamata Banerjee, a veteran of more than 30 years in politics, has not spoken openly of her ambition for the top job. But her party leaders have said enough to draw jabs from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Rainy week ahead for NE states, Nagaland: report GUWAHATI, MAY 12 (AGENCIES): North Eastern states like Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya are likely to experience moderate rain and thundershower activity with squally winds throughout the week ahead. According to reports, heat wave however might continue to prevail over these places even amidst the rainy weather. All these weather conditions are prevailing due to the presence of a Cyclonic Circulation over Northeast Bihar and adjoining parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal. An upper air trough is extending up to Odisha. A cyclonic circulation is located over Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. The northwesterly and southwesterly flow, feeds into the instability of the circulation causing heavy rain, lightning, and gusty winds in the North East. Also, one after the other Western Disturbances are moving across the Tibet region. In association with above systems, the southwesterly and southerly air mass is prevailing from Bay of Bengal over to North Eastern states.

NPF writes to Mon DC seeking action against those involved in locking office

KOHIMA, MAY 12 (NPN): Reacting to reports of its 19 suspended office bearers locking the party’s Mon divisional head office on May 10, NPF central has dashed a letter off to Mon deputy commissioner seeking initiation of action against those involved in the incident. Speaking to Nagaland Post, NPF spokesperson Achumbemo Kikon said the party belonged to every member and not to any individual, adding that taking such step was unbecoming. According to Kikon, upon receiving a letter seeking action against Mon division president and general secretary by the 19 suspended members, officials of NPF legislature wing and central office bearers in charge of Mon division visited Mon on May 2. But instead of attending the joint meeting convened on May 3 by the visiting officials to thrash out the issue and resolve differences, he alleged that the 19 members failed to attend the meeting and instead threatened to lock the party office. He said such attitude from those whom the party considered “responsible leaders” was not expected. The NPF spokesperson said the party had accepted the resignation of even those members who had recently announced their resignation through local dallies, besides those who had officially handed over their resignation letters to the party. Claiming that even more trustworthy people are in line to join the party, he exuded confidence of reorganising the party in Mon at the earliest possible time.

border districts like Maldah and Murshidabad,” said a senior official of the National Security Intelligence (NSI). He said both type of weapons find takers in Bangladesh– while the AK rifles are lapped up by Islamist extremists and underground groups in Chittagong Hill Tracts, the country made weapons sell well with the local gangsters and even political activists. The official said that Bangladesh Border Guards (BGB) officials have been asked to take up this issue with India’s Border Security Force (BSF) soon after the Lobk Sabha elections in India is over. He said there were reliable reports that a former Chakma insurgent leader in Chittagong Hill Tracts was frequently visiting India because he was connected with the weapons trafficking. “We are watching his activities closely, but we can do little when he is in India,” he said. But it was not clear who the official was referring to. The former Shanti Bahini, which laid down arms after the historic 1997 CHT accord, has been split into many factions, who are often involved in turf wars.

NEW DELHI, MAY 12 (AGENCIES): Union minister of state for DoNER, Dr. Jitendra Singh, who has been the Minister in-charge of North Eastern states for the last five years, said that the BJP will get highest tally from the North Eastern States for Lok Sabha 2019, thus turning a new leaf and opening a new chapter in the history of electoral politics of Northeast India. “This tally will get further added on by the seats to be won by BJP allies under NEDA (North East Democratic Alliance),” he said while sharing his assessment of the voting trends with media persons. Dr. Jitendra Singh recalled that in 2014 Lok Sabha election, BJP had won only 8 out of 25 seats in the North Eastern States, which included seven from Assam and one from Arunachal Pradesh. “This time, however, the jinx will break and BJP will also record decisive victory from States like Meghalaya, Tripura and Manipur from where last time we did not get a single seat,” he predicted.

4 ex-NPF office bearers seek public apology from party GS; threaten defamation suit

DIMAPUR, MAY 12 (NPN): Four suspended NPF central office bearers have demanded public apology from party’s Mon division general secretary Hongnaw for reportedly telling a news channel that the seven suspended NPF MLAs had pressurised and forced members to quit the party. In a joint statement, former NPF central general secretary Akang, former secretary Nokshom Konyak, former NPF Youth Wing central vice-president Honpha and former general secretary Kapwang also threatened to file a defamation case against the Hongnaw if he does not tender public apology within seven days. The four leaders said they were rudely shocked when they saw Hongnaw telling Northeast Live that the seven suspended NPF MLA had pressurised and force members to quit the party, and repeating the same allegation in social media. Accusing the Mon division general secretary of alleging that the

former party legislators had prepared a list of office bearers without the knowledge of NPF functionaries, they said he had accused the former party MLAs of even putting forged signatures of central as well as divisional and constituency office bearers. They said it was a criminal case. The quartet clarified that they had taken their position against the hasty decision of party’s central leadership after suspension of their leaders following disqualification petition filed with the Assembly speaker. Terming Hongnaw’s allegation as a bid to destroy their image and position, they asserted that the accusation without any documentary proof or evidence is nothing short of a criminal offence amounting to defamation. Strongly condemning the “false and fabricated allegation”, the four leaders declared that the matter will be handled in the most serious manner and appropriate action initiate as deemed fit.

DHAKA, MAY 12 (AGENCIES): Bangladesh’s security apparatus have expressed serious concern over flow of illicit arms entering its territory from Northeast India and West Bengal. Senior intelligence officials told Northeast Now that Chinese designed weapons enter the North Eastern states from Myanmar and are then finding their way to the hilly border of Mizoram with Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts. While the Assam Rifles have made some big seizure of weapons over the years, not much preventive action to check these arms smuggling cartels have been noticed in recent months. In one such seizure near Mizoram airport, more than thirty AK series rifles were recovered in March 2013. Bangladesh intelligence says that in the last two years, the arms cartel linking Burmese producers with end-users in Bangladesh have become active again. “While sophisticated weapons reach Bangladesh through Northeast India, country made weapons manufactured in Bihar are entering Bangladesh through West Bengal’s

D I M A P U R , M AY 1 2 (NPN): Lane dividers in Dimapur city bear mute testimony to their fates at the hands of reckless drivers when several of them at different parts of the city have been smashed. At night, especially after 10 p.m., the stillness of the night is often shattered

by sounds of vehicles hitting these dividers. Rash driving has become a menace at night and this has caused considerable concern as several hit and run cases were also reported. Several of the newly constructed white-and-blue painted dividers in various colonies have been damaged. Some were repaired

while others were yet to be repaired. In a recent incident, a car moving in break neck speed hit a divider near a petrol pump along Tajen Ao Road rammed and causing huge damage. It may be mentioned that the recently constructed lane-dividers on the stretch of Tajen Ao Road from Clock Tower till Duncan Basti tri-junction was dam-

aged on seven to eight locations. The lane-divider on Khermahal road from the police point till the old overbridge has also been damaged at several places. Residents in these areas also revealed that besides four wheelers, some dare devil riders on two wheelers scream past without silencers and cause tremendous disturbance to residents.

D I M A P U R , M AY 1 2 (NPN): Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) has begun construction of boundary wall and traditional gate at new Naga cemetery in Zani village area from Saturday through funds raised from individuals and wellwishers. In a statement, NCD general secretary Thsapongkyu Sangtam pointed out that as the old Naga cemetery located at Lake View Colony here has run out of space for burial, the council approved plans for developing a new cemetery at Zani village. However, he said shortage of funds resulted in delay in construction and maintaining the new cemetery. Nonetheless, work has begun, he added. According to him, though the new cemetery is

being built, the existing one at Lake View Colony still needs to be maintained. And while he appreciated and expressed gratitude to all who have come forward and contributed so far,

the NCD general secretary appealed to all stakeholders to extend cooperation to the ongoing new Naga cemetery project, so that it can be commissioned at the earliest and on time. K Y M C
