spans 44 years beginning with his appointment as United Democratic Front youth wing president in 1974, was elected unopposed in the February 2018 polls. He had won his first election in 1989 from 11 Northern Angami-II Assembly Constituency and thereafter retained the seat seven times in all elections he contested. On Thursday, Rio will be sworn-in as chief minister of Nagaland for the fourth time after-- 200308; 2009-13 and 2013-14. He was sworn-in as chief minister for the first time on March 6, 2003 as the leader of the NPF which he along with other veterans formed, by reviving the then NPC after leaving the Congress. This time, Rio again will be chief minister of another new party- Nationalist Democratic Progressive

Party (NDPP) which was formed last year under his patronage. The NDPP in its maiden electoral foray won 18 of the 40 seats it contested and along with the BJP which won 12 of the 20 seats contested. The two have cobbled a simple majority of 32 in a house of 60 with the support of one JDU and one Independent. The NPP, which won two of the 25 seats contested and a pre-poll alliance partner of NPF is also likely to be part of the PDA. Rio has been a strong advocate for Naga political solution and committed to facilitate the process when solution is achieved. Rio will head a coalition of equals, arithmetically speaking, since the NDPP and BJP are six seats apart. Another important aspect this time is that the then rul-

ing NPF which won 26 of the 58 seats it contested, is going to be the largest ever opposition party in the history of Nagaland Legislative Assembly history. This feat is considered a bonus since there was no opposition in the assembly since mid- 2015 when all members were part of the ruling coalition. BJP sources informed Nagaland Post that besides Amit Shah, defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman, minister of state for Home, Kiren Rijiju; chief ministers of Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh have confirmed their participation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was reportedly requested to grace the swearing-in ceremony had expressed his inability to attend it, a source in the Raj Bhavan told PTI.

Politics over statues: PM Modi seeks action against vandals

VIJAYAWADA, MAR 7 (PTI): Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu Wednesday night asked his party’s two central ministers -- Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju and MoS Science and Technology Y S Chowdary -- to resign amid growing strain in ties between his Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and BJP over alleged neglect of the state in Union budget. He said his party would come out of NDA “but party-to-party issue (of ties with the BJP) will be decided later.” Addressing reporters, Naidu said “This is the first step. We will go ahead with other actions later.” TDP chief said he tried to speak to Prime Minister as a “courtesy” to inform him about the decision to quit but he did not come on line. “Arun Jaitley’s statement was the last straw. They are apparently predetermined...,” he said. Decision came hours after Finance Minister said the Centre can’t offer special status to Andhra Pradesh, but would offer a special package with equivalent funding.

NEW DELHI, MAR 7 (IANS): Attacks on statues snowballed into a major political storm on Wednesday after a bust of Jan Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee was vandalised in Kolkata Wednesday, allegedly by Left supporters in response to the razing of a Lenin statue by BJP supporters in Tripura, and a Periyar statue attacked in Tamil Nadu Tuesday night, forcing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah to speak tough against vandalism and warning the guilty of stern action. Following the strong condemnation by BJP bigwigs and a massive political backlash in Tamil Nadu, state party leader H. Raja expressed heartfelt regrets over his Facebook post suggesting removal of the statue of Dravidian icon Periyar E.V. Ramasamy. BJP expelled a local functionary in Vellore district for damaging Periyar’s statue in Tiruppattur on Tuesday night. Amid fears of flare-up in political violence, the Home Ministry asked states to take strong action against those indulging in vandalism and making it clear that district magistrates and

superintendents of police would be responsible in case of any law and order disturbance. The fresh incidents of vandalism followed bulldozing of Communist hero Lenin’s statue in Tripura on Monday, an act condoned by some BJP leaders. Lenin’s figure was brought down after the BJP swept the elections, ending 25 years of Marxist rule in the northeast state. The situation in parts of Tamil Nadu was tense a day after the statue of Periyar, considered the fatherfigure of the rationalist movement in Tamil Nadu, was vandalized. Two petrol bombs were hurled outside the BJP office in Coimbatore on Wednesday morning. In Kolkata, members of ultra-Left student out-

fit “Radical” vandalised and defaced a statue of Jana Sangh founder and ideologue Syama Prasad Mookerjee at the Keoratola crematorium, police said. A statue of Dalit icon Ambedkar was vandalized in Meerut district in Uttar Pradesh, police said. Senior district officials rushed to the spot and security forces were deployed in large numbers. Prime Minister Modi strongly condemned the incidents and warned of stern action against those found guilty. He spoke to Home Minister Rajnath Singh, expressing his strong disapproval. “Persons indulging in such acts must be sternly dealt with and booked under relevant provisions of law,” the Home Ministry said.

Mkg DC show-causes Changki village council DIMAPUR, MAR 7 (NPN): Mokokchung deputy commissioner (DC) Sachin Jaiswal has issued a show-cause notice to Changki village council chairman, VCM and GB asking why action should not be initiated against them for the brutal assault on a 58-year-old woman on the night of March 5 and her ex-communication from Changki village under 29 Jangpetkong constituency. The DC asked them to appear in person before him at his office at 11 a.m. on Thursday with names of the perpetrators and warned that failure on the part of Changki village council to act positively on the matter would be a ground for the council’s dissolution under Section 54(1) of the Village Council Act, 1978. Citing reports, DC said the reason for the assault on the lady and her ex-communication along with three others – two women and a man – from the village for 30 years was that the lady had not voted for the candidate supported by the village council. The DC termed the “shameful act” as a mockery of free and fair elections mandated by Election Commission of India and a blatant violation of a directive (no. CON/ EL/2018/68, dated 15/02/2018) issued by him pertaining to the role of village council during elections. Jaiswal pointed out that it was clearly stated under Section 15(1) of the Village Council Act that a village council would be auxiliary to the district administration and

NSCW condemns assault on women; excommunication

Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) has strongly condemned the assault on women at Changki village and Tuli. In a statement issued on Wednesday, NSCW chairperson Dr. Temsula Ao said recent media reports of violence against women during the just-concluded Assembly election was disturbing and shameful. She said whatever happened at Changki village once again exposed the male bias and tendency to vent collective anger towards the weaker section of society. While condemning the assault, Ao also appreciated the initiative of Mangkolemba police station. She also hoped that the perpetrators of Tuli incident would be brought to book. Meanwhile, the NSCW chairperson also expressed grave concern at the excommunication of four people who had exercised their franchise as per election rules of the country.

State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi was in New Delhi with nine ASEAN leaders as chief guest for the Republic Day parade.
