NDPP TO FACE INC AFTER POLITICAL DRAMA FOR BY-POLL ENDS IN AONGLENDEN Correspondents
Mokokchung/Kohima, Mar 28 (npn): By election to Mokokchung’s 26 Aonglenden assembly constituency scheduled on April 11, continue to be preceded by political intrigues, when both the National People’s Party (NPP) and Naga People’s Front (NPF) candidates withdrew from the contest on March 28, the last day for withdrawal of nominations and pledged full support to the PDA consensus and NDPP candidate Sharingain Longkumer. The withdrawal of the two candidates was confirmed to this Correspondent by Abhinav Shivam IAS, SDO (Civil) Mokokchung and Returning Officer for 26 Aonglendent assembly constituency. Shivam informed that NPF candidate Toshipokba and NPP candidate O. Tinujongshi have officially withdrawn their nominations from the by-election. The four-cornered contest will now be a straight contest between the NDPP and Congress. The deep suspense on
SC to hear 10% EWS quota petitions on April 8 New Delhi, Mar 28 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Thursday refrained from passing any order on the repeated plea for stay of the notification providing for 10 per cent reservation in jobs and educational institutions for the economically weaker sections (EWS) of unreserved categories. Refraining from issuing any order on the plea by lawyers seeking a stay of notification, the SC Bench, comprising Justice S.A. Bobde and Justice S. Abdul Nazeer. adjourned the matter for April 8. At the last hearing on March 11, the Bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Sanjiv Khanna had said they would consider on March 28 whether petitions challenging the 10 per cent reservation in jobs and educational institutions for the EWS of unreserved categories should be referred to a larger Bench. However, the matter was listed before the Bench of Justice Bobde and Justice Nazeer as CJI Gogoi is heading five-judge constitution Bench hearing a number of cases involving the interpretation of the Constitution.

O. Tinujongshi (NPP)
Toshipokba (NPF)
March 27 over the “missing NPP candidate Tinujongshi” was solved after the NPP candidate resurfaced on Thursday. He officially withdrew from the race and then pledged his full support through a written statement, to the consensus candidate of the ruling PDA Sharingain Longkumer of NDPP and the PDA government. Speculations about NPF was also confirmed when its candidate and former MLA Toshipokba Longkumer also withdrew his nomination on Thursday and then signed a written declaration extending his full support to the NDPP candidate Sharingain Long-
kumer. It may be recalled that NPP lost both its MLAs who switched over to NDPP via “merger” after O. Tinujongshi was fielded as NPP candidate against the PDA consensus candidate Sharingain of NDPP. The two MLAs had objected to the party fielding a candidate since NPP was part of PDA coalition. Meanwhile, both Toshipokba and Tinujongshi in separate statements but similar contents, have lauded the “progressive change and development, good governance and stability” brought by the PDA government under chief minister Neiphiu Rio and deputy
chief minister Y.Patton. In a statement, Tinujongshi appreciated the “good governance, progressive development and stability” witnessed in Nagaland after the PDA coalition government took over under the leadership of chief minister Neiphiu Rio and deputy chief minister Y. Patton. Tinu said he has withdrawn in favour of NDPP candidate to strengthen the hands of the PDA government and its leadership. Toshipokba in his statement, appreciated the PDA’s stand as a facilitator to the ongoing Naga peace process for an “early, honourable and inclusive settlement” as another factor for backing the NDPP for the byelection. He also formally declared his full support to NDPP candidate Sharingain Longkumer. under the “dynamic and visionary leadership” of chief minister Neiphiu Rio and deputy chief minister Y. Patton for the by-election to 26 Aonglenden assembly constituency. The withdrawal of the
NPF and NPP candidates has dealt another blow to the opposition in Nagaland. The by-election will now be a straight fight between PDA consensus candidate Sharingain Longkumer (NDPP) and Alem Jongshi of the Congress (INC).
Pre-planned: NPF
Meanwhile, when contacted, NPF legislature party spokesperson Imkong L. Imchen said the withdrawal of the party candidate was extremely painful and claimed that it was a pre-planned conspiracy. He said Toshipokba and Rio had a long understanding to do business after taking the ticket at the expense of Aonglenden citizens and the NPF. Regarding a further course of action, Imchen said a collective decision was required and said a decision will be made known after a meeting is held. Discouraged by the move made by the NPP candidate, NPP party officials refused to comment when Nagaland Post contacted them.

maj Party(BSP) alliance and urged people to “stay away from ‘SARAB’ in the polls for the good health of Uttar Pradesh.” The Hindi word for liquor is ‘sharab’. The remarks by Modi, who also termed the SPRLD-BSP alliance in UP ‘mahamilavat’ (adulterated), drew a furious reaction from the Congress and the SP. Congress demanded an apology from Modi while SP chief Akhilesh Yadav accused him of spreading the “intoxication of hatred”, saying the prime minister didn’t know the difference between ‘sharab’ and ‘sarab’ (mirage). Continuing his attack on the Congress, Modi accused it of raising questions on the valour of the armed forces after the post-Uri surgical strikes in 2016 in Pakistan-occupied
NEW DELHI, Mar 28 (Agencies): As much as Rs. 677 crore in cash and other assets has been seized across the country ahead of the polls, the Election Commission said on Thursday. Tamil Nadu topped the list of offending states, with the authorities recording seizures of Rs. 130 crore in gold and other assets. According to NDTV, Andhra Pradesh came a close second, with seizures amounting to Rs. 128 crore, while recoveries in Uttar Pradesh stood at Rs. 120 crore. Figures quoted by the EC showed that drugs continue to be a major influencer in Punjab, with narcotics accounting for a major portion of the Rs. 104-crore seizures. Karnataka came fifth on the list, with seizures worth Rs. 33 crore.
Meerut/Rudrapur/ Akhnoor, Mar 28 (PTI): Launching his party’s Lok Sabha poll campaign in three states, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday kept the focus on national security, terrorism and how his “decisive” government showed the courage to conduct a surgical strike in all spheres -- land, sky and space. Modi addressed rallies in Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, Rudrapur in Uttarakhand and Akhnoor in Jammu and Kashmir--all part of Lok Sabha constituencies figuring in the first phase of the polls on April 11. Modi also tore into the opposition parties by coining an acronym ‘SARAB (alcohol’) from the initial letters of the Samajwadi Party(SP), Rashtriya Lok Dal(RLD) and Bahujan Sa-
Kashmir(PoK) and later the air strikes in Balakot inside Pakistan in February. The contest is between a “a decisive government and an indecisive past”, Modi said at the BJP’s Vijay Sankalp rally in the western UP town of Meerut, a day after announcing that India had demonstrated the antisatellite missile capability by shooting down a live satellite to join an elite club of space super powers. Calling himself the nation’s ‘chowkidar’, Modi said, “It was this chowkidar’s government that had the courage to conduct surgical strikes on land, sky and space. India should develop, India should be secure from enemies.” The country is, for the first time, witnessing a government that knows how to deliver, he said.
NDA gains in opinion polls after Pulwama, Budget New Delhi, Mar 28 (IANS): Even as the slugfest between the BJP and opposition parties continues over alleged politicisation of the post-Pulwama airstrikes in Pakistans Balakot, opinion polls show that the BJP-led NDA has made substantial gains in terms of number of seats it may win if Lok Sabha elections are held now. Polls also show that while the National Democratic Alliance (NDA)’s seat projections were on a decline since the beginning of 2018 (when it was 322) and slipped to 237 in January this year, its fortunes reversed after the government’s announcement of 10 per cent quota for economically backward sections among the forward castes and the Budget in which it announced a slew of measures for farmers, unorganised labourers and the middle class.
While not all opinion surveys are conducted consistently every month, an average of such polls indicates that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led front managed a gain of 18 seats post-Pulwama strikes in March, taking its projected figure to 274 seats against 256 in February. The complication with this comparison is that while the data for five surveys was available for March, it was available for only two polls in February. If one takes only the Times Now-VMR opinion poll (the only poll for which data was available for all three months of this year), the NDA, which was projected to win 252 seats in January, gained 18 seats and took its projected tally to 270. This was the time when the government announced 10 per cent EWS quota in mid-January, followed by
tax relief for the middle class by making income (after deductions) up to Rs 5 lakh effectively tax-free. It also announced an annual direct income support of Rs 6,000 for small and marginal farmers. In the March poll, the first after the post-Pulwama airstrikes in Pakistan, the survey gave the NDA 283 seats, taking it across the 272-seat threshold. The seven-phased Lok Sabha polls are scheduled from April 11 to May 19, and vote count will take place on May 23. The ABP-Cvoter survey also gave substantial gains to the NDA government after the three major events (EWS quota, Budget and airstrikes), taking its tally from 233 in January to 264 in March, just short of the 272-mark. The poll was not conducted in February. Somewhat similar
trend could be seen in the India TV-CNX poll as well, which was conducted in March 2019 and December 2018. As per the poll, the NDA marginally improved its figure from 281 seats to 285 seats. While the India Today-Karvy poll also reflected the declining trend of projected seats for the BJP from 281 in August last year to 237 in January this year, the result of their poll post the airstrikes is still not available. However, irrespective of which opinion poll one considers, the undisputed trend remains that the BJP-led front has successfully turned the tide in its favour over the last twothree months by shifting the rhetoric to national security and by taking measures such as the EWS quota, tax benefits for the middle class and income support for farmers.
