India may see 1 lakh to 13 lakh COVID19 cases by mid-May, scientists warn

NEW DELHI, MAR 25 (PTI): India could face between 1 lakh to 13 lakh confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus by midMay if the current trend in the growing number of COVID-19 cases continues, according to a report by an international team of scientists. The report, compiled by COV-IND-19 Study Group, an interdisciplinary team of researchers, said while India seems to have done well in controlling the number of confirmed cases compared to other countries like the US and Italy in the early phase of the pandemic, the country is critically missing a key component in this assessment -- the number of truly affected cases. This factor depends on the extent of testing, the accuracy of the test results, and the frequency and scale of testing of people who may have been exposed but do not show symptoms, the researchers, including Debashree Ray from Johns Hopkins University in the US, said.

DIMAPUR, MAR 25 (NPN): In view of the threat of Coronavir us (COVID-19) pandemic, the Konyak Union (KU) Wednesday declared “indefinite emergency” within Mon district. On sealing of international border, Konyak Union through its media cell said the move should be considered as a “preventive act” that would shield Konyak brothers of Myanmar from Covid-19 pandemic. The apex body asserted that the present stance was “purely temporary” and therefore “such situation should not be taken otherwise.” Further, restricting social gathering during Aoleang 2020, KU appealed to the citizens to remain in doors and directed respective village councils to implement the order in their villages. Following the nationwide lockdown, the union has restricted movement indefinitely and said that all routes entering into the district would be actively manned. However, it said that movement of essential commodities, medical emergencies would be exempted. (Cont’d on p-8)

COVID-19 infections starts to accelerate in the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Tuesday a total lockdown for 1.3 billion people in India for 21 days, warning that the nation may go back by 21 years and many families could be devastated if we don’t abide by the lockdown rules. India, according to the researchers, has the most overstretched healthcare system where it is hard to provide care even when the patient volume flowing into hospitals is “normal”. Meanwhile, nearly 90 more coronavirus positive cases were reported in India taking the total number of cases to 606 Wednesday while the number of deaths was 10, according to health ministry data. The number of active COVID-19 cases stood at 553 while 43 people have been cured, discharged or migrated. The 606 positive cases includes 43 foreign nationals, the ministry said.

care facilities,” the scientists wrote in the report. “Thus our current estimates are at best underestimates for India based on early phase data,” they said. According to the report, it is essential for India to adopt “draconian measures” to MHA issues fresh guidelines on act before the growth of lockdown exemption, see p-7
