Govt warns Facebook of stringent action (2nd from L) Alexander Nix, CEO of Cambridge Analytica.

NEW DELHI, MAR 21 (AGENCIES): Hours after the Congress’s Manish Tewari said the Election Commission should investigate which party had or has links with disgraced firm Cambridge Analytica, BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad alleged that the Congress has links with the data analytics firm. Cambridge Analytica (CA) has been in the eye of the storm following an investigation by Britain’s Channel 4 which alleged that the company harvested private data of Facebook users in 2014. BJP’s Prasad alleged that the Congress party committed data theft and manipulated

data to win elections. He questioned the role of CA in the social media management of Congress and party president Rahul Gandhi. Much before that though, Tewari tweeted saying the Election Commission “should enquire/ recommend (an) investigation (into) what services & to whom they were offering” these services in India. After Prasad’s allegation, the Congress party’s social media head Divya Spandana also refuted Prasad’s charge. “News about Congress engaged/engaging with Cambridge Analytica is absolutely false,” she tweeted.

BJP-led NDA government on Wednesday warned social media platforms like Facebook of stringent action if any attempt was made by them to influence the country’s electoral process through “undesirable means”. Amid probe by US privacy watchdog and British lawmakers over a potential breach of user confidentiality by Facebook, IT and law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the Indian government fully supports freedom of press, speech and expression and is all for free exchange of ideas on social media. However, any attempt by social media sites, including Facebook, to influence India’s electoral process through undesirable means will not be tolerated, he told reporters in Parliament House complex. “If need be, stringent action will be taken,” he added. “Mr Mark Zuckerberg you better note the observation of the IT Minister of India. We welcome the FB profile in India, but if any data theft of Indians is done through the collusion of FB system, it shall not be tolerated. We have got stringent power in the IT Act, we shall use it, including summoning you in India,” Prasad warned. Asked if the government would initiate a probe on data use by Facebook, Prasad said that India had a regulator in the form of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), and in case of any specific complaints, the same would be taken under a structured investigation.

Zeliang rubbishes media reports DIMAPUR, MAR 21 (NPN): Former chief minister and senior NPF leader TR Zeliang has termed media reports claiming to have confirmation of documentary evidence indicating his involvement in terror funding case as nothing but “pure exaggeration and dim-witted imagination at its heights”. A communiqué issued by information & publicity wing of leader of opposition’s office on Wednesday asserted that distorting facts did not change the story and added that linking Zeliang to terror funding by some reporters buttressing their stories with fake inputs claiming to have been obtained from National Investigation Agency (NIA) and government sources was highly objectionable and put journalism ethics to shame. T h e c o m mu n i q u é clarified that news reports

appearing in Assam and Nagaland media or anywhere else and linking the former chief minister to terror funding were neither confirmed by NIA nor by Zeliang or his office, but were mere copy-paste from reports published on hearsay. It rebutted the news published in Deccan Chronicle by stating that it was totally wrong and misleading. Zeliang had personally written for deferment of the date for his cross examination because of the Assembly session, which would end on March 2, and there was no written reply to NIA through any advocate at any point of time, it was further clarified. Asserting that some “political virus” with vested interests trying to flare up the issue could not be ruled out, leader of opposition’s office stressed that NIA would never provide such

false information to any media house or reporters and the recent fake reports in the media was nothing but a remake of allegations raised against Zeliang in 2015 when he was accused of laundering Rs 78 crore in Singapore and Hongkong banks. The general public had believed the false news till it was confirmed from the banks concerned, the office pointed out. Alleging that such news reports were the brainchild of people with destructive mindset, the communiqué called for avoiding false news reports and publishing unconfirmed news reports without authentication at all cost. The leader of opposition’s office said it was constrained to issue the clarification to put speculations related to NIA summon of Zeliang to rest and set the record straight for all times.

Despite being under ceasefire with various groups for the last two decades, NTC said Nagas were still longing for the real peace. ANCSU sets Mar 26 deadline to credit PMS Dimapur, Mar 21 (NPN): All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) has set March 26 deadline for the State government to credit Post Matric Scholarship (PMS) amount to bank accounts of 11,335 deprived beneficiaries, failing which it threatened not to allow any college to function besides announcing boycott of classes. In an ultimatum served to the government through a press release on Wednesday, ANCSU vicepresident and grievances committee chairman Benjong Longchar and education secretary Kruto Tetseo said the union had lost patience and would no longer co-operate with the government on the matter. They also warned that ANCSU should not be held responsible if there was any untoward situation. The release pointed out that following ANCSU’s demand (vide letter no. ANCSU-CM/Memo-1/2017-19, dated 12/12/2017) demanding alternative arrangement for payment of PMS, the State government had assured the student community that positive steps would be taken to ensure that payment of PMS for

2016-17 was made before December 25, 2017. However, the government had miserably failed to deliver justice to the students’ community, they alleged. In continuation to its letter to chief minister Neiphiu Rio dated March 13, 2018, ANCSU reminded CM to take serious note of the matter and sought his immediate intervention in regard to disbursing the remaining amount of Rs 7.71 crore. Mentioning that it had also sought appointment on several occasions with the chief minister and the minister concerned to discuss the issue, ANCSU regretted that no appointment had been granted till date. Stating that it was dismayed at the government turning a deaf ear towards a genuine cause, ANCSU said it was not unaware of any development taking place on the issue. The State government should stop fooling the students by making lame excuses and giving fake assurances, it said. The union recalled pursuing the issue of PMS for 2016-17 for ST students of Nagaland for almost a year now.

Naga political groups observe ‘Naga Republic Day’ NSF calls on Rio; submits

Solution possible only through mutual agreements: NSCN (I-M) Speeches by various NPGs on R-Day Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, MAR 21 (NPN): NSCN (I-M) has affirmed that all enduring solutions to the problems were possible only through “bilateral dialogue and mutual agreements” and not through military means. This affirmation was echoed in the speeches of NSCN (I-M) vice president, ‘gen.’ (Retd.) Kholi Konyak and NSCN (I-M) kilo kilonser, Hukavi Yepthomi, made on the occasion of 39th Republic Day Celebrations held at CHQ, Hebron on Wednesday. In his speech, delivered in absentia by Steering Committee convenor, Rh. Raising, the NSCN (I-M) vice president described Naga movement as one of the longest national resistance movements in the world history, but from the

very beginning the Naga people have been looking for a negotiated settlement of the Indo-Naga political problem. Because, he said the Nagas trust in a democratic principle of settlement of dispute through mutual consent and agreement. Kholi said Nagas oppose imposition of India’s will upon them, as such imposition has “never ever solved problems anywhere in history, it only aggravates them.”

Further, Kholi said Nagas were ‘definitely’ for a kind of agreement rooted in the principle of mutual respect and recognition of sovereign rights and territories, and a solution that protects and guarantees their future. (Full text on p-6) In his speech, NSCN (I-M) Kilo Kilonser, Hukavi Yepthomi, said Naga people’s yearning and struggle to decide the fate of their destiny was natural expression of their history as free peoples. NNC: Naga National Council (NNC) president, ‘gen.’ (Retd) Thinoselie M Keyho, said that attempted invasion of Nagaland by the Indian armed forces had compelled the NNC to declare Nagaland as a Republic and accordingly formed the Federal government of Nagaland (FGN) on March 22, 1956. In his message on “63rd Naga Republic Day”, Keyho said that the first and the most arduous hurdle faced by the Nagas thus far was the 16-Point Agreement. He stated that agreement instead of becoming a solution turned out to be an obstruction to the Naga issue. Through the agreement, NNC president said the Government of India introduced the “Divide and Rule” policy and divided the Nagas. The second hurdle for the Nagas, he said was the “Shillong Accord” of 1975. Through this Accord, NNC president said the Naga national workers, who were once united under the umbrella of NNC and FGN, were divided into two groups- ‘pro’ and ‘Anti’ Shillong Accord of NNC and FGN. NNC: Naga National Council (NNC) acting president, Z. Royim Yimchungrii, said that the Government of India has come forward to have honest and sincere negotiation with the majority of the Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) recognising the historical and political rights of the Naga people to self determine their future in consonance with their distinct identity. In his speech on the occasion of the “Naga Republic Day” on March 22, 2018, Royim said the two entities (GoI & NNPGs) were working out the relationship in consonance with contemporary realities. the matter by the State Vigilance Commission (case no. RC 05/2016 and RC 9/2016 for investigation into irregularities/mismanagement of Mid Day Meal Scheme). Deptt exam: Referring to departmental examination conducted by School Education department for selection of graduate Maths and Science teachers held on September 25, 2017, NSF said it had submitted a representation to then School Education minister on September 29 appealing for selection of indigenous inhabitants only, and to which the minister replied that only eligible indigenous inhabitants of the State would be selected (letter no.
