Rahul sounds poll bugle for 2019

Attacks Modi, woos youth and farmers

NEW DELHI, MAR 18 (AGENCIES): Blowing the bugle for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the Congress today launched a fierce attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and resolved to promote ordinary party workers, as it sought to woo the youth and farmers at its 84th plenary session. The Congress charge was led by party chief Rahul Gandhi, who mounted a blistering assault on Modi, accusing him of symbolising crony capitalism, and saying the country’s poor continue to live in “Modi maya” (Modi illusion) of the promised ‘achche din’ (good days). “If you are poor, your only choice is to become a farmer, labourer. You are destined to live in ‘Modi’s maya’ - an imaginary world of ‘acche din’ (good days), Swachh Bharat, Rs 15 lakh in your bank account,” he said. He also attacked BJP president Amit Shah, calling him a “murder accused”,

Jethmalani calls for Mamata-led front to ‘oust’ Modi I N D O R E , MAR 1 8 (AGENCIES): Renowned lawyer Ram Jethmalani on Suday called for formation of a third front led by West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee to “oust Prime Minister Narendra Modi” in the next Lok Sabha elections. Both Congress and BJP governments have been deliberately apathetic to recovery of black money stashed in “Germany and other countries”, Jethmalani said. “They have committed a joint crime of cheating people. Therefore, a third front of honest leaders is needed,” the former Union Law Minister said. “I want Mamata Banerjee to lead the third front to oust Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the next general elections. Mamata has the ability to be the prime minister,” said Jethmalani, a one-time Modi supporter who later became the Prime Minister’s bitter critic. The senior lawyer also criticised Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and the NDA government over their policy on black money. The BJP-led NDA government has no right to stay in power, he said.

and said people have accepted him and the “lying” BJP leadership which is “drunk with power”. Gandhi said he had emptied the stage for the youth to occupy, pointing to the huge dais which only had a podium for speakers and no seating arrangement. The Congress Saturday talked of forging workable alliances with like-minded parties as part of efforts to get battle-ready for polls. To woo farmers, the party also said that if voted to power, it would come out with a loan-waiver scheme for small and marginal agriculturists similar to that announced by UPA in 2009.

Assailing the prime minister over the PNB fraud, Gandhi said,”Nirav Modi who carried out India’s biggest theft has the same name as our prime minister. It is an interesting fact. The most corrupt man in cricket also shares the same name as our prime minister.” Gandhi said there was a need to change the organisation as workers have energy and strength to change the country, but there is a wall between them and leaders. “My first job will be to break that wall...not with anger, but with love, giving respect to our senior leaders,” he said, amid a thunderous applause from the gallery.

“The second wall, perhaps the bigger, we can’t break until we break the first. The second wall is between the country’s youth and political system,” he said. He said the BJP has been “losing election after election”, and this has “brought about a change in Modiji’s face. The suit is gone....” Earlier, former prime minister Manmohan Singh launched an all-out attack on the Modi government, saying that while it had “messed up” the economy, it was spouting “jumla” (empty rhetoric) with pipe dreams about generating 2 crore jobs and doubling farm income. He accused the BJP-

Zeliang denies involvement in terror funding Dimapur, Mar 18 (NPN): Former Nagaland chief minister and senior NPF leader, T.R. Zeliang has denied any involvement in alleged siphoning of government funds to any militant outfit. He made this assertion while making a written submission before National Investigation Agency (NIA). A report in Times of India (TOI) quoted a source close to the former chief minister saying “Zeliang’s advocate submitted his written reply to NIA where he has made it clear that he has nothing to do with the siphoning of government funds to NSCN (K) or any other outfit. He has also mentioned that, if government departments have been doing so, he was not aware of it and had that been brought to his knowledge he would put an end to it.”

“He (Zeliang) did not meet National Investigation Agency and only submitted his written reply. There is no question of him appearing before NIA since there is no proof whatsoever that he sponsored or supported or extended support or assisted or aided NSCN (K),” the source told the Times of India. National Investigation Agency had first faxed a letter to the Nagaland chief minister’s office (CMO) summoning T.R. Zeliang to its New Delhi office on Tuesday. Zeliang, who is now leader of opposition in Nagaland Legislative Assembly, wrote back to NIA seeking a later date for appearance, as the first session of the newly-elected Assembly started from Tuesday and he needed to be present. T h e i nve s t i g a t i n g agency had then changed

the date to Saturday. The terror funding probe had started in 2016 when NPF-led government was in power. The summon notice, signed by NIA deputy superintendent of police Yogesh Rathore of Guwahati unit, referred to Zeliang as being “acquainted with circumstances of the case”. Just before the Assembly election in February, NIA had summoned three officials from CMO to Guwahati. Two days before the election results were announced, one of these officers was summoned to New Delhi again. Times of India further quoted the source: “It is most unfortunate that NIA is being used by political elements for selfish political ends. Zeliang is being arm twisted to bow down before these elements, which want him to join a certain party.”

led government of having “mismanaged” the dispute in Jammu and Kashmir. From foreign policy and defence to economy, the former prime minister spoke on a range of issues, and was accorded a standing ovation by party leaders. In its resolution on the economy, it said sustained economic growth was the path towards becoming a middle-income developed country. “Such sustained economic growth can be achieved only if the country can be rescued from the hands of incompetent economic managers and entrusted to those who have for many years nurtured the economy and guided it on the path of all-round economic development,” the resolution said. “We have heard the clamour for change. It is now time for change,” it said. Moving the resolution, former Finance minister P Chidambaram said, “We have done it before and we will do it again.” Punjab Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, in his address, exuded confidence that Rahul would be hoisting the flag at Red Fort in 2019.

Indian education sector needs holistic relook: Experts NEW DELHI, MAR 18 (PTI): India needs to have a comprehensive relook at its education sector to prepare its youth which comprise over 50 per cent of the 1.3 billion population for the future, educationists and experts have suggested. Speaking at the sixth Global Education and Skills Forum in Dubai, the experts called for a shift in the policy to meet the challenges of the changing times. “A relook at the Indian education sector is inevitable given that the current system was developed in the preIndependence era for just five per cent of the population and that too for clerical roles, with no room for creativity or promoting social reorganisation,” said Aditya Nataraj, Founder director Kaivalya Education Foundation. BJP reacts to Rahul Gandhi; says speech ‘rhetoric of a loser’ NEW DELHI/LUCKNOW, MAR 18 (AGENCIES): Moments after Rahul Gandhi likened the BJP to “power-hungry” Kauravas, the saffron party hit back at the Congress president, calling his speech the “rhetoric of a loser”. “It sounds like the rhetoric of a loser devoid of substance,” Union minister Nirmala Sitharaman said. Sitharaman also accused the Congress of being “solely responsible” for the anti-Sikh riots in 1984, terming it “a party that cried over the dead bodies of terrorists.” “A party which questioned the fundamental existence of ‘Shree Ram’ today wants to be identified with the Pandavas,” mocked the minister. “Rahul Gandhi attacked Veer Savarkar just to make his family responsible for freedom,” Sitharaman said, referring to the Congress chief ’s allegation that “Savarkar wrote a letter to the British begging for mercy and clemency.” Responding to Gandhi’s allegations against BJP president Amit Shah, Sitharaman said that they were part of a

“fake and falsely motivated campaign”. “It’s astonishing that the Congress president chooses to name BJP president Amit Shah and calls him a murder accused. He has been cleared by a court. This is a fake and falsely motivated campaign by someone who is out on bail on criminal conspiracy of fraud in National Herald case,” she said. The BJP asserted that the Congress did not believe in “transparency” and hence, was “against” technology, including EVMs. Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad echoed his colleague’s remarks and said the Congress chief ’s “rant was shameful.” Earlier during the day, Gandhi came down heavily on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre, invoking the Mahabharata to compare the “power-hungry” BJP and RSS to the Kauravas. “Like the Kauravas, the BJP and the RSS are designed to fight for power. Like the Pandavas, the Congress is designed to fight for truth,” Gandhi said during his address at the 84th Congress plenary.

No one can raise question on govt’s integrity: Rajnath Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh Sunday said while there could be a debate on the performance of the BJP-led Rajnath Singh government at the Centre, no one could raise a question on its integrity and intention. Singh said, “There is no need to tell anyone as regards how our government is running the country. There can be a debate on whether more work has been done or less, but no one can raise a question on the integrity and intention of the government.” Singh added that “no one has been able to gather the audacity of levelling corruption charges, involving even a single paisa, against any of our ministers”. With GDP growth rate at 7.5%, he said economists all over the globe had started believing that India was the fastest growing economy in the world.

YSR Cong, TDP to pitch for notrust notices in Lok Sabha today NEW DELHI, MAR 18 (PTI): The YSR Congress and the Telugu Desam Party will pitch for taking up their notices of no-confidence motion against the Modi government when the Lok Sabha meets tomorrow amid no signs of a let-up in the deadlock in its proceedings. Y V Subba Reddy of the YSR Congress has written to the Lok Sabha secretariat to put his notice for the motion in the revised list of business for tomorrow. The TDP has also moved a notice for a no-confidence motion. When their notices were not taken up last week, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar had argued that they could not be due to the House being not in order, with members of several parties raising

slogans in the Well. With the Telangana Rashtra Samithi and the AIADMK, which have often cooperated with the government on its legislative business, protesting over a host of issues, it remains uncertain if order is restored tomorrow. While the first two weeks of the last phase of the Budget Session have been a virtual washout, the government has managed to get some key bills and the budget passed amid a din through a voice vote without a debate. The YSR Congress was the first to give a notice last week for a no-trust motion after the Centre made it clear that it would not grant Special Category Status to Andhra Pradesh. Not to be outdone by its main rival in the state, the TDP, a longtime BJP ally,

then decided to break its ties over the issue and brought a no-confidence motion of its own. Both parties have been lobbying with opposition parties for support to their respective notices. A noconfidence motion notice has to be supported by at least 50 MPs to be taken up in the House. The government has expressed confidence that the notices, even if they are admitted, will be defeated given its strength in the Lok Sabha. The current strength of the Lok Sabha is 539 and the ruling BJP has 274 members, more than the majority mark of 270, and enjoys the support of several allies. With the 16-member TDP quitting the BJP-led NDA, the ruling alliance strength has reduced.

FM voices concern over financial deficits of NE states State BJP reschedules 2-day Correspondent

NEW DELHI, MAR 18 (NPN): Voicing concern on the financial deficit states of North East, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said that the Centre will extend full support to reverse the situation in the region, an official statement said on Sunday. Jaitley made this statement during a meeting with Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma, at his residence in New Delhi Saturday evening to discuss on the financial situation of the State. Jaitley gave a patient hearing to the chief minister and other cabinet ministers and assured all support and cooperation to increase revenue generation in the State. “We have to come up with inadequacies of resources of the deficit state. live on its own resources it will take one day for the region to break, so it our responsibility to support and give a special attention to the region”, Jaitley said during the interaction with the ministers. He expressed hope that Assam was slowly coming out of the deficit status. Conrad Sangma discussed about setting of an IT and food Park in Meghalaya apart from promoting the indigenous herbal medicines of the region. Bharat programme MPs urge govt to expedite NE telecom project DSwachh IMAPUR , MAR 1 8 and district Swachh Bharat

Members of Parliament from BJP as well as Congress have expressed concern over delays in mobile network rollout in uncovered villages of the sensitive North East region. In a letter to Union Telecom minister, Manoj Sinha, Congress MP from Arunachal Pradesh Ninong Ering said that despite North Eastern states signing memorandum of understanding in January over installation of mobile towers in uncovered villages, nothing has been implemented on ground. He has called for immediate installation of mobile towers in Bishing and Tuting area of Arunachal Pradesh where China has reportedly attempted to build road on Indian territory. “It is my earnest request

to you that the connectivity on all Chinese border is very important. As you must have witness during the last incursion of the Chinese in Bishing, in Tuting area of Arunachal Pradesh. The information received by the army personnel was very late. If the mobile tower had been installed the incursion could have been stopped,” Ering said. The Cabinet in 2014 had approved Comprehensive Telecom Development Plan for the north-eastern region to provide 2G mobile coverage in 8,621 uncovered villages and areas along with national highways in the North-East with an outlay of Rs 5,336.18 crore. However, the project is yet to be rolled out. Bharti Airtel has also been entrusted to set up over 2004 mobile towers

to connect about 2,128 villages in Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, parts of Assam and national highways in north-eastern States. Besides, BSNL has been assigned to install 2,817 mobile towers to provide coverage in 4,119 uncovered villages in the region. BJP MP Nishikant Dubey had also approached the Telecom minister last December expressing concern over the 3-year delay in the project. He alleged that senior officers in Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) department are “deliberately delaying” the project. “They are responsible for criminal delay of the project. Either they are incompetent or they have some ulterior motives,” Dubey alleged.
