Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the events in Christchurch represented “an extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence” and acknowledged many of those affected may be migrants and refugees. In addition to the dead, she said more than 20 people were seriously wounded. “It is clear that this can now only be described as a terrorist attack,” Ardern said. the national security threat level was being raised to the second-highest level. Authorities have not specified who they detained, but said none had been on any watch list. A man who claimed responsibility for the shootings left a 74-page anti-immigrant manifesto in which he explained who he was and his reasoning for the attack. He said he was a 28-year-old white Australian and a racist. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison confirmed that one of the four

people detained was an Australian-born citizen. Police Commissioner Mike Bush said Friday night that a man had been charged with murder. He did not mention the other three suspects and did not say whether the same shooter was responsible for both attacks. Ardern at a news conference alluded to anti-immigrant sentiment as the possible motive, saying that while many people affected by the shootings may be migrants or refugees “they have chosen to make New

Zealand their home, and it is their home. A video that was apparently livestreamed by the shooter shows the attack in horrifying detail. There was a second shooting at the Linwood Masjid Mosque that killed at least 10 people. The police commissioner warned anybody who was thinking of going to a mosque anywhere in New Zealand on Friday to stay put. The man who claimed responsibility for the shooting said he came to New Zealand only to plan

KOHIMA, MAR 15 (NPN): Hectic last minute preparations were underway at Khouchiezie (Kohima local ground) Friday evening, as Kohima village gears up to celebrate a ‘Plastic-Free’ Sekrenyi festival on March 16 under the theme “Pride of Kewhimia”. Festival organizing committee secretary, Thenuokhrie-ü Tsiekha,

told this correspondent that the organisers, in an effort to support the state government’s commitment for plastic-free state, have requested everyone to bring their own plates and water bottles. Informing that Kohima village has an approximate population of 17,734, she said around 10,000 people were expected to attend the celebration. She stated that the celebration was a cul-

tural one and did not have any bearing on religious sentiments. The committee convenor, Neibu Sekhose, said this was the first time that the village was celebrating a combined Sekrenyi, unlike other years where each of the four Khels celebrated it separately. On the issue of a Christian convert celebrating Sekrenyi, Sekhose said that

the festival was all about purification, adding it was a time when everyone comes together to praise the Lord. He said that the programme would begin with a prayer. Besides that, there would be no religious activity. He said the main goal was to bring forth unity among all communities and to come together for the betterment of the village. Sekhose added that they would not be celebrating Sekrenyi like in the old days where people came together, make merry, drink alcohol, and perform significant tribal religious activities. It would be a time for social gathering and to display beautiful cultural attires and tradition, he said. In support of the VIP free culture declared by the State government, the celebrations would have no chief guest and everyone would be considered equals. K Y M C
