Pranab sells idea of India to RSS
EX-PREZ’s ADDRESS AT RSS EVENT AROUSES DIVIDED OPINIONS NAGPUR, JUN 7 (PTI): For m er P resident a nd Congress veteran Pranab Mukherjee today warned that any attempt to define India through “religion, dogma or intolerance” will only dilute the country’s existence, as he attended an RSS event amid criticism by several of his party leaders including his own daughter. Mukherjee said intolerance will only dilute India’ national identity and Indian nationalism emanated from universalism, assimilation and co-existence.“In India, we derive our strength from tolerance, and respect our pluralism. We celebrate our diversity,” he said. “I am here to share my understanding on nation, nationalism and patriotism about our country which is ‘Bharat’,” said Mukherjee, who served as President of India between 2012 and 2017. “We must free our public discourse from all kinds of fear and violence” he said. Before the former president spoke, RSS chief
Smart pre-paid in 3 years, says Power minister Spl. Correspondent
NEW DELHI, JUN 7 (NPN): Centre has set a target to make all power meters smart pre-paid in the next three years, Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy, R.K. Singh said on Thursday. This one step to bring about revolution in power sector, generate employment, he said. “In next three years metering will go smart prepaid, and gone will be the days of bills reaching your house. So need of the hour is to scale up manufacturing of smart prepaid meters and to bring down their prices,” said Singh while addressing a meeting of meter manufacturers called by the Power Ministry. He advised the manufacturers to scale up the manufacturing of smart prepaid meters as the demand would be huge in coming years. The Minister also advised the officials of the Ministry to consider making smart pre-paid meters mandatory after a particular date. This will revolutionise the power sector by way of reduced AT&C losses, better health of DISCOMs, incentivisation of energy conservation and ease of bill payments etc, he said.
Pranab Mukherjee speaks during the closing ceremony of ‘Tritiya Varsha Sangh Shiksha Varg’ on Thursday.
Mohan Bhagwat said the debate over Mukherjee’s decision to attend the RSS event was “meaningless” and no one is an outsider for his organisation. While the Sangh is often described as a Hindu right-wing organisation, it calls itself a nationalist and
cultural organisation rather than a political or religious one. It was founded by Keshav Baliram Hedgewar , on September 27, 1925 on Vijayadashami day at his house here. Mukherjee’s decision to attent the RSS event has already triggered a major
political slugfest with several Congress leaders criticising his decision. Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel today expressed his disapproval at former president Pranab Mukherjee visiting the RSS headquarters in Nagpur and said he did not expect this from him. Mukherjee’s daughter and Congress leader Sharmistha had yesterday said her father was giving the BJP and the Sangh a handle to plant false stories with his decision to speak at the RSS event. Speaking ahead of Mukherjee’s speech, Bhagwat said Mukherjee will remain what he is and the Sangh will remain the Sangh even after the event. Bhagwat said his organisation wants to unify the entire society and no one was an outsider for it. People may have different views but they are all children of mother India, he said. Bhagwat said the Sangh has inviting prominent people to its event every year.

KOHIMA, JUN 7 (NPN): Nagaland SSA Teachers’ Association (NSSATA) has decided to intensify its stir in support of its various demands by staging a sit-in protest in front of chief minister Neiphiu Rio’s residence from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday. The decision to stage the protest followed a meet-
ing between NSSATA leaders and school education director and other senior officials of the directorate that remained inconclusive. According to NSSATA office-bearers, the meeting with the directorate officials was inconclusive since their core demand that their salary be paid under the State’s non-plan budget was not addressed. The ex-
ecutive members informed the media that they had sought a specific timeframe for implementation of the June 2 order, to which the directorate officials could not indicate any. The association reminded the officials that the teachers of 2010 and 2013 batches were appointed as regular employees through open recruitment vide ad-
While appealing the teachers to resume their duties, the State government has warned that it would not allow students’ interest to be compromised in the name of protest. In a communiqué, principal secretary (PS) Menukhol John asserted that interests of the students will not be compromised under any circumstances and necessary steps will be initiated, if required. On the three demands of NSSATA, the communiqué agreed in principle to include 7th RoP after observing all formalities for the SSA teachers. The School Education department also conceded to the teachers’ demand by releasing their salary from January to March
(without 7 RoP). On their demand for transfer of salary to non-plan head, the PS clarified that the posts were created for implementation of CSS and the existing practice of payment of salary through the SSA State mission authority will continue “in whatever name of form the CSS of SSA continues”. However, he directed the department to suggest ways so that salary can be paid on time. Mentioning that the NSSATA leaders also raised other issues during the meeting, John said the department had taken serious note of them and was very clear in its endeavour to accommodate and address them. DIMAPUR, JUN 7 (NPN): Nagaland deputy chief minister and BJP leader Y. Patton has appealed to “religious leaders” in Nagaland, not to mix religion with politics and maintained that party has no connections with any religion but that it was only a political party committed towards the allround development and welfare of the people. Patton said this while addressing party workers in Pfutsero town on June7 in connection with achievement of four years of BJPled NDA government. Patton said that though BJP was branded as “antiChristian” in Nagaland during the recent assembly and Lok Sabha by-poll, yet no Christian has been tortured or humiliated in any part of the North East where BJP is ruling in almost all states. He said even if he along with other Nagas have joined BJP, they have
not changed their religion but remained as Christians. Further, he said those in BJP from Nagaland will speak out “if anything goes wrong against Christians”. He appealed to Nagas not to hate BJP and be fooled by “false religious propaganda”. He pointed out that Nagaland being a resource-crunch state depends on grants from the Centre and it was essential to have “good relation with the ruling party”. Patton also predicted that BJP under Modi will return to power in 2019 and therefore, it was necessary for Nagas to accept BJP in the state. While acknowledging people’s support to the PDA government, Patton blamed the previous DAN government for continuous crisis and assured the commitment of PDA government to bring change in development.
