DIMAPUR, JUN 5 (NPN): The lightning bandh called in Dimapur from 10 a.m. onwards Wednesday by the college students unions in Dimapur affiliated with ANCSU, evoked mixed response against the backdrop of the strong opposition from the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) and Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU). Students from different colleges, in hundreds, gathered at several pockets of Dimapur including Clock Tower, Deluxe Point, Town Hall, Nagarjan Petrol Pump etc. Volunteers gathered in large numbers particularly at Deluxe Point, where police

personnel and security forces were deployed to ensure peace and security. Some of the student leaders told Nagaland Post that the bandh went ahead despite opposition from DCCI and DNSU. On DNSU opposing the bandh, they said the 19 colleges in Dimapur did not come under DNSU but were affiliated with ANCSU. During the bandh period, police personnel were seen trying to pacify the student volunteers to maintain peace and not to indulge in violence. Many shops remained open while several were closed. Many shops and business establishments owned by Muslims were also closed due to Eid.

An ANSCU member however claimed that the bandh was total and successful. He expressed gratitude to students and leaders for their support. There were reports that volunteers had harassed and shop owners threatened to down shutters, allegations that were strongly refuted by some student leaders Four ANSCU functionaries from Kohima were deputed to Dimapur to monitor the students. Meanwhile, ANSCU acknowledged police personnel for extending cooperation. They also claimed that colleges that were not affiliated to ANSCU also turned up for the event in support of the cause. SKK seeks Along regrets use of force clarification from against ANCSU activists H&TE minister Correspondent

DIMAPUR, JUN 5 (NPN): All Sumi Students’ Union (SKK) has claimed that Higher & Technical Education (H&TE) minister Temjen Imna Along tried to convey to All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) leadership “through some feelers” that unless ANCSU re-considered its approaches on the Scholarship issue, the long pending issue of up-gradation of Khelhoshe Polytechnic Atoizu (KPA) could be hampered. In a press release, All Sumi Students’ Union president Atokiho Sumi and general secretary Hutoshe Kits also alleged that the ANCSU leadership was “constantly being intimidated through phone and otherwise by his henchmen.” Stating that such practice was “most unbecoming” of a cabinet minister, the SKK has, therefore, asked the minister to put out clarification in the public domain on the following: Do Khelhoshe Polytechnic Atoizu and ANCSU belong to Sumi tribe alone; did ANCSU raise the issue of up-gradation of Khelhoshe Polytechnic Atoizu to professional engineering college of which the cabinet has already made its decision

consultation ‘uncalled for’: DCCI

DIMAPUR, JUN 5 (NPN): Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) has clarified that it was not opposed to the cause of All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU), but stressed that calling an indefinite bandh without consultation was “totally uncalled for”. Asserting that it had no choice but to see the welfare of shop owners and customers at large, DCCI made it clear in a press release to student bodies and public that indefinite bandh only led to “massive negative effect”, not only on the business community but on all fronts in “our daily lives”. While fully expressing its solidarity and moral support to the student community whose scholarship fund was allegedly misappropriated that tantamount to “nothing less than daylight robbery”, the trade

body also condemned the reported high-handedness of the State government in dealing with the democratic agitation of students. The use of force to silence the democratic voice by lathi-charge, water cannon and arrest, instead of listening to their plight was “very unfortunate”, the release stated. Mentioning that the action amounted to denial of citizen rights to air their grievances, DCCI wondered what the government was trying to teach the future generation by using such a brutal force. It suggested that the government should learn to deal with students, “who are our future”, with patience and respect. Meanwhile, the traders’ body said due to celebration of Eid, the Muslim business community could not open their shops. (Cont’d on p-7)

This declaration was officially announced by adviser youth resources and sports Er.Zale Neikha in the presence of Angami Public Organisation (SAPO),

Angami Youth Organisation (AYO) and SAYO leaders and the general public at a programme held under the aegis of Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) at Viswema Village Council Hall Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, Neikha described Dzükou Valley as one of the biggest assets of Nagas, besides being a prominent tourist spot in the Northeast and one of the most sought-after destinations

in the State. He called for collective efforts for preservation and protection of the valley. Neikha also requested the frontal organizations in the region to take up the initiative of beautifying the valley and also the responsible department to take up developmental activities in the valley to create avenue. Department of Tourism additional director (HoD), Akhale Vizol, appreciated SAYO for making a pledge to keep the plastic-free zone. She also stressed on the need to protect environment at the local level. She also suggested that the responsible organisations to man entry points to curb plastic use in the valley. leto Tsukru said SAYO took the initiative in order to combat plastic pollution in the valley. He reminded that the valley attracted many visitors but at the same time, faced a lot of challenges due to littering by the visitors. DIMAPUR, JUN 5 (NPN): In stark contrast to NSCN (K)’s affirmation that the group would not sign the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) with the Myanmar government, the Myanmar military, or Tatmadaw, has reportedly asserted that current problem could be solved if the NSCN(K) abides by three points: to take the NCA path, to uphold the principles stated in the bilateral agreement and not to support Assam and Manipur rebels. According to a report published by The Irrawaddy, Tatmadaw spokesperson Brig-Gen Zaw Min Tun said “First of all, they must not allow rebels who are fighting with the neighbor (India) to stay with them. They need to honestly take the NCA path and follow its principles.” The Tatmadaw has

accused the NSCN (K) of supporting insurgent groups of Indian origin, including ULFA (I), National Democratic Front of Boroland (S), KLO, PDCK, KYKL, PREPAK, PLA, UNLF and RPF in Myanmar’s soil. NSCN(K) signed a regional bilateral ceasefire with the Sagaing Region government on April 9, 2012. The Myanmar government is inviting them to sign the NCA along with other armed groups. NSCN (K) MIP incharge Joseph Lamkang has said “The Naga did not sign the first 1947 Panglong Agreement and the current NCA is a transformed structure of the 1947 Panglong.” Joseph said the Naga affair is different to Myanmar’s other ethnic affairs and that the Myanmar government understands it very well. He said instead of pushing them to sign the NCA, the

government should find another means of dealing with the NSCN(K) push for independence. “The Myanmar government has never cared about the Naga’s true desire. The seven-year ceasefire has been one-sided and they (the military) have gained advantages. They have not treated us well. The Myanmar government understands that Naga affairs are different from other ethnic group affairs. Instead of pressuring the Naga to sign the NCA, I am sure that the Myanmar government can find an alternative way,” he stated. He said Nagas did not sign the old Panglong Agreement because they decided to be independent. “Nagas have fought and died for it, hence why should we sign NCA? Myanmar has made a terrible mistake by trusting India too much,” MIP in-charge said. K Y M C
