Petrol rates down for 5th day running, diesel unchanged NEW DELHI, JUN 3 (IANS): State-run oil marketing firms marginally lowered petrol prices for the fifth consecutive day on Sunday under the dynamic pricing regime although the rates continue to rule at unprecedented levels following the resumption of daily price changes after a 20-day suspension of the system last month owing to the Karnataka elections. As per prices announced by largest retailer Indian Oil Corp (IOC), prices fell around nine paise in the four metro cities, while diesel prices remained unchanged over Saturday. The Indian rupee has also strengthened, easing the pressure on fuel prices. On a weekly basis, it appreciated by 72 paise to close at 67.06 against the US dollar from its previous week’s close of 67.78 per greenback.

S H I L LO N G, J U N 3 : Curfew was relaxed for seven hours on Sunday in violence-hit areas here but Internet services remained restricted even as Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma said police had found that some people were funding stone-pelters. Conrad Sangma told the press that police have “found out that there are certain people who are funding this agitation. “We have found evidence of expensive alcohol being given to them, we have found evidence of money being given to them,” he said after reviewing the situation with Home Minister James Sangma, DGP Swaraj Bir Singh and other officials. “There are

individuals who confessed they have been given money to take part in this agitation and they have come there because they have been given money...,” Conrad Sangma added. Asserting that stern action would be taken against those funding the troubles, he said that they had got “some names and we have got records of that and we are going to move forward in that line also...” “Curfew has been relaxed from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in view of the improvement in law and order situation since Saturday evening. But night curfew across the city will remain until further orders,” P.S. Dkhar, Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills district said. “There were no reports of any violence during the

curfew relaxation from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The situation is under control and more security reinforcement have been deployed while the Army is on standby,” East Khasi Hills district Deputy Commissioner Peter S. Dkhar said. He said that suspension of Internet on mobiles would continue besides prohibiting the sale of petrol and diesel in jerry cans, bottles and any other containers to public. He also appealed to the people not to trust false reports propagated in social media like attacks on a gurdwara in the city. Meanwhile, Sikh leaders denied reports that a gurdwara here was attacked or damaged. A Sikh delegation led by Delhi legislator Manjinder Singh Sirsa met the chief minister and expressed satisfaction that “Sikhs are safe” in Meghalaya. “The problems are on since past two decades. An amicable solution will be found on the issue which will be a win-win situation for both sides. It will ensure that nobody lives under fear and terror. There were reports going around in the country that the situation is terrible...” Sirsa said.

According to TST, Greater Guwahati Tourist Tata Sumo Drivers Welfare Association, Indica (Diesel) Tourist Taxi Drivers Association and the Greater Guwahati Tourist Taxi Association will submit a memorandum to Assam government on Monday, seeking security for vehicles plying to and from the Meghalaya capital. “At least four vehicles were attacked by miscreants in the Mawlai area of Shillong. Passengers and drivers have been injured as well. The three associations have now decided to resort to an indefinite strike from Monday,” Brajen Kr Das, president of Greater Guwahati Tourist Tata Sumo Drivers Welfare Association told The Shillong Times on Sunday.

Cong alleges 60L ‘fake voters’ in MP poll roll; EC orders probe BHOPAL, JUN 3 (AGENCIES): Congress on Sunday launched a major attack against the ruling BJP government accusing it of “electoral misconduct” by including the names of 60 lakh “fake voters” in the voters’ list. The party urged the Election Commission (EC) to remove these entries from the electoral rolls of 230 Assembly constituencies. EC on Sunday ordered a probe into the allegations of large-scale discrepancies in the voters’ list of Madhya Pradesh. The poll panel has formed two teams to probe the allegations which will submit a report by June 7. A Congress delegation led by Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Kamal Nath met EC officials on Sunday and alleged that the BJP government in the state had included the names of 60 lakh fake voters in the electoral roll. “We have given proof to the EC that the voters’ list of Madhya Pradesh is fraudulent. Sixty lakh fake voters have been enlisted in it. We have conducted our own enquiry in 100

constituencies. “We have given proof to the EC as regards how one voter has been enlisted in different constituencies with the same name, address and father’s name. This cannot be any mistake, it has been done deliberately,” Nath told reporters after meeting the EC officials. Congress also requested the EC for a special monitoring mechanism to remove all the “multiple” and “demographically similar” entries and urged the poll panel to inform all the national political parties on a weekly basis about the status of identification of such voters at least at

the district level. The EC teams will visit Madhya Pradesh to ascertain how the discrepancies occurred. The teams would also fix responsibility for multiple and fake entries, EC said. Demanding strict action against the returning officers for their alleged involvement in coming up with such “fraudulent” electoral rolls, the Congress leaders also said the EC should not deploy them on poll duty in the future. “Officers, who produce the second corrected list, should also give an affidavit/ certificate, along with the correct list,” Scindia said.
