PM attacks Cong on ‘Emergency’ anniv
MUMBAI/JAIPUR, JUN 26 (IANS/AGENCIES): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday lashed out at the Congress, 43 years after then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed Emergency on June 26, 1975, saying it was a “dark period” that the nation could never forget and called for making democracy stronger by “writing, debating, deliberating, and questioning” it’s vital aspects. Addressing the nation during ‘black day’ protest by the BJP to mark 43rd anniversary of Emergency, Modi took the opportunity attack the Congress Party and its leaders- taking care not to name any members of the Gandhi-Nehru family- saying the BJP was not observing a ‘Black Day’ merely to criticise the Congress, but to make the modern youth aware of what happened during Emergency. “India remembers it as a dark period when every institution was subverted and an atmosphere of fear was created. Not only people but also ideas and artistic freedom were held hostage to power politics. The youth have no idea what happened

then and they cannot imagine how living without freedom can be,” Modi said. Addressing a meeting at the Birla Matoshri Autitorium, Modi hailed the spirit of those citizens who firmly opposed the Emergency, leading to suspension of the fundamental rights. “Whenever the Congress - and especially this one family - apprehends losing power, they start shouting and raise the bogey that the country and democracy are in danger and there is an atmosphere of fear, and they alone can save it,” Modi said. He accused the (Gandhi) family of breaking the INC - built by the efforts of Mahatma Gandhi and other leaders - “in their lust for power”, and how it subverted all democratic in-
stitutions including the Constitution, the parliament, the elections, the judiciary and the media, “for the benefit of one family”. Modi said they did everything but cleverly remained within the limits of the Constitution, but years later the family never imagined that the courts would frame corruption charges against them and they would be enlarged on bail. “In the past all parties had respected the Election Commission of India (ECI), baring one party, which has now been reduced from 400 to 44 (seats in Lok Sabha). So now they target the ECI, they attack the Electronic Voting Machines,” Modi pointed out.
‘Emergency’ to figure in school textbooks’
Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar on Tuesday said that students shall study an “Emergency chapter” as it will be a part of their school textbooks soon. Talking to the media, Javadekar said: “We want students to know about the correct history and hence we are working to change
the course curriculum in schools. The students with this initiative will understand why the period of Emergency was considered the second freedom struggle,” Javadekar said.
Cong hits back, says Modi ‘more cruel’ than Aurangzeb
After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attack on the Congress and the Gandhi family over the Emergency, the party hit back, saying he “is more cruel” than Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and has “enslaved democracy” during the 49 months he has been in power. Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala led the attack against Modi, saying his tirade against the Gandhis over the Emergency was only to hide his own failures and the “false” promises and “jumlas” he had made to the public before coming to power. He alleged that an atmosphere of fear was being created in the country to suppress dissent with those opposing them dubbed as “anti-national” and that an “undeclared emergency” was imposed in the country
DMC in fish sample collection exercise Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, JUN 26 (NPN): While authorities in Kohima and Mokokchung have taken peremptory step against sale of fishes suspected to be injected with formalin to prevent deterioration during the ten to fifteen-day journey from the sources such as in South or North India; authorities in Dimapur have not taken any such step as per the government ban against sale of imported fish varieties on the plea that laboratory tests would decide the issue. Earlier on Monday, DMC team went on fish sample collection drive at New Market and Railway Bazaar. On Tuesday, the team landed at the auction venue near SubUrban Police Station at Signal Basti. The team led by veterinary assistant

surgeon, Dr. Sentimoa Longkumer and deputy director (V&AH), Dr. Sentinungla collected samples from the fish auction venue on Tuesday. The entire exercise contrasted sharply with the preventive measures at Kohima and Mokokchung where fishes from outside were banned till cleared for sale. The DMC team will be sending the samples of
imported fish varies for test for formalin in the mobile laboratory van which is presently stationed in Kohima. It may be pertinent to point out that fishes imported from far away states for consumers in Nagaland pass through Dimapur. KMC on Monday detected formalin from the fishes and after seizing the entire lot of over 5000 kgs, destroyed all of them. Dr. Sentimoa Longkumer informed Nagaland Post that the samples collected from the auction centre would be sent to the mobile testing unit at Kohima. He added that even fish traders had taken out fish samples from the same boxes from which the DMC team had collected and would send them separately to Guwahati for tests. (Cont’d on p-7)
under Modi. “Delhi Sultanate’s ‘dictator’ Modi, who is even more cruel than Aurangzeb, today gave lessons to the country on the Emergency imposed 43 years ago. By taking out his anger on the Congress, can a lid be put on Modiji’s ‘jumlas’? In an apparent attack on Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, the Congress leader said “unfortunately, if those sitting in constitutional positions will also murder ‘maryada’ and set traditions, then people’s faith in democracy will be hurt.” Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma flayed Union Minister Arun Jaitley for drawing a parallel between Indira Gandhi and German dictator Adolf Hitler, saying it was an “absurd and outrageous” distortion of history. “The BJP has developed the art of speaking a lie a 100 times to make it look like the truth and this is what they are doing by speaking against the Emergency, imposed 43 years ago,” he said. He said that the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi in 1975 was an aberration and she herself regretted it.

Commerce & Industry (MCCI) Tuesday said that fish traders have resolved not to sell any imported fish in Mokokchung with immediate effect. In a press note, MCCI president, Tsukti Longkumer, and general secretary, Limalenden Longkumer, said the decision was taken in public interest during a meeting with members from the fish traders’ union. MCCI stated that fish sellers in Mokokchung would refrain from selling any kind of imported fish, other than live fish like magur and eel until such time competent authorities give green signal. In this regard, MCCI and fish traders have requested consumers to bear with the inconvenience caused. Now, apply for passport from anywhere in India Organizations demand action NEW DELHI, JUN 26 (PTI): External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday launched a new scheme under which a person can apply for a passport from anywhere in India irrespective of the place of stay. The minister also launched a mobile application, available in Android and iOS platforms, that would have the facilities for applying, paying and scheduling appointments for acquiring a passport. U n d e r t h e n ew s c h e m e, launched on the occasion of the Sixth Passport Seva Divas, a person can now choose the Regional Passport Office (RPO) and the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) for submitting the application. The application can be submitted irrespective of whether the person’s present residential address was within the jurisdiction of the selected RPO or not, a ministry of external affairs (MEA) statement said. The police verification, if required for a specific passport, would be conducted at the address specified
in the application form, it said. The passport will be printed and despatched by the RPO selected for application submission by the applicant to the address specified in the application, the statement said. For example, a resident of Jaipur, who is temporarily residing in Kolkata, will now be able to apply at a PSK or POPSK under the RPO, Kolkata, and will not have to travel all the way back to Jaipur to submit an application for a passport at a PSK or POPSK under the Jaipur RPO. This citizen-centric initiative of the ministry is expected to benefit the applicants who are unable
to apply at a PSK or POPSK near their ordinary place of residence, the statement said. With the launch of the ‘mPassport Seva App’, a person would not require access to a computer and printer to apply for a passport, the MEA said. Swaraj, while speaking at the launch of the initiatives, said there had been “revolutionary” changes in the process for applying for a passport. There were 77 Passport Seva Kendras made available in 48 years, while 231 more were added in the last 48 months, she said at the event attended by minister of state for communications Manoj Sinha and minister of state for external affairs General VK Singh (Retd). Noting that at present there were 307 PSKs in the country, she announced that at least one PSK or POPSK would be made available in all the 543 Lok Sabha constituencies. Swaraj said unnecessary requirements for a passport have been scrapped since she took charge of the ministry, including doing away with marriage certificate.

Further, the meeting reaffirmed public action committee resolution on “one government, one tax” that was passed on October 31, 2013 and the public action committee under the aegis of NCD would pursue the matter to safeguard the public interest.
