RAJGARH, JUN 23 (AGENCIES): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hit out at the opposition for spreading “lies, confusion and pessimism”. The PM made a veiled attack on the Congress and said some opposition parties were working with malicious intention against the BJP government, which was working for the welfare of people. “People trust the BJP and its government. Those spreading lies, confusion and pessimism are cut off from the ground reality,” the PM said. The BJP government is following the vision of late Jana Sangh leader Syama Prasad Mookerjee, whose contribution to the country has been suppressed to highlight the achievements of one particular family, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday. Without taking the ‘Gandhi’ name, Modi said, “Many heroes of the country had been willfully forgotten just to praise and glorify the people of one family and Syama Prasad Mookerjee was one of those forgotten heroes.” Praising the deeds and thoughts of Mookerjee,

whose death anniversary was on Saturday, Modi said, “His thoughts were way ahead of his times. The Make in India programme is part of his vision to make the country self-reliant, because he understood its importance for the country’s progress.” Modi also said that country’s industrialisation, nuclear programme flowed out of Mookerjee’s vision to make the country strong. “As the country’s first industries minister, he showed the way to progress and his thoughts on education, health and security are still relevant today,” the PM

said.

He also hit out at the Congress, alleging that the opposition party’s policy of votebank politics, by way of welfare schemes, was fading. He highlighted the progress made by the country in four years of NDA rule and said his government had built as many houses in four years which would have taken 20 years under the previous UPA government. “Everyone knows that during the Congress’ time, the names of housing projects, their construction and the quality of construction were shrouded in controversies,” he alleged. He said the

urban population kept rising but no attention was paid to amenities by the previous regimes. Targeting the Congress, Modi said the party which ruled the country for maximum years never trusted the people and their hard work. “They did not trust the strength of the country. In the last four years, we never spoke of frustration and dismay. We are the ones who are marching ahead with confidence,” he said. He said since the BJPled NDA came to power in 2014 it started working on cities’ infrastructure as per their need in the 21st century. In the past 4 years, the NDA government sanctioned works worth Rs 2.30 lakh crore whereas the Congress government during its 10-year rule had sanctioned works worth Rs 95,000 crore. Modi said it was the result of the government’s policies that those wearing slippers were travelling in planes today. About 10 crore people travelled aboard planes i.e. people travelling aboard planes exceeded those who travelled in AC trains last year, he said.

‘Most undergrads still lack basic English writing skills’ Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, JUN 23 (NPN): Many undergraduate students in Nagaland still lack basic English writing skills, still practise rote learning (learning by repetition) and have accorded low priority to critical thinking , despite access to information at the palms of their hands and all of which have contributed to “SMS lingo” infiltrating even into formal communication. These were some of the observations made at the “Workshop on Challenges and Issues of Teaching Writing at the Undergraduate Level in Nagaland” held at Unity College here on Saturday. The workshop was organized by Cue Academy Centre of Writing Skills in collaboration with department of English, Unity College. Professors from several colleges attended the workshop. Noted Naga educators and authors shared their observations and appealed to the college professors to reach a consensus, address the root causes and

implement measures to help students write expressively and inculcate critical and analytical thinking. The main highlight of the workshop was the addresses by the plenary speakers: assistant professor, department of English, Dimapur Government College, Shuiching Konyak Lasuh; vice principal, Tetseo College, Dimapur, Dr. Hewasa Lorin; and founder and chief instructor of Cue Academy Centre of Writing Skills at Kohima, Dr. Rukulu K. Puro. In her address, Shuiching Konyak Lasuh lamented the poor foundation laid in the formative years. She said, as a consequence, “English even at the college level is appalling.” She pointed out there the culture of reading was hardly seen

and students today were more interested in social media than reading a book. This has contributed to poor vocabulary and grammar, she added. Lasuh rued the lack of interactive learning where students hardly ask any questions and teachers are also focussed mainly on completing the syllabus. She pointed out that college students still follow rote learning, adding that dependency on guide books has not encouraged independent or critical thinking. The second plenary speaker, Dr. Hewasa Lorin, spoke on the tricky aspects of whether students should be assessed only on grammar and sentence construction or idea, analysis, and critical thinking. NRC issue: Ex-ULFA leaders ask Assam CM to quit Cancer survivors seek people’s support GUWAHATI, JUN 23 (AGENCIES): Pro-talk ULFA leader and member of the ‘Khilonjia Suraksha Mancha (Forum on Indigenous Rights)’, Anup Chetia, has asked Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal to end his alliance with the BJP by resigning as the Assam chief minister and embrace regionalism, retracing the path he had once taken. The platform, formed by former ULFA leaders, took out a bike rally against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (2016) from Assam’s Nagaon district to the capital city of Guwahati on Saturday. “He must live up to his recognition as the ‘Jatiya Nayak’. We would ask him to retrace the route of regionalism. If he stays true to the interest of people of Assam, he will be embraced yet again as the chief minister. Let him give up his chair, break away from the

national party, and return to regionalism for the sake of our people,” said Chetia. A fleet of around 400 bikes led by the former ULFA leaders-- Jiten Dutta, Antu Chowdang, Mrinal Hazarika and Prabal Neog among others made way from Nagaon and Morigaon district as part of an awareness rally. “We want to create awareness among the rural people against this Bill. We are involving youths to lead this rally. We will be visiting the rural pockets of Assam and educating people. At least 400 bikes will be out on the roads from Nagaon’s Bhutaigaon till Jagiroad,” said Jiten Dutta. In Dhemaji district, the All Assam Students Union (AASU) and 28 other organisations flayed the continued silence of the ruling BJP-led government by leading a massive ‘Gana Satyagraha’ protest rally against the Bill.

It is reported that they will

be treated as foreigners and that their citizenship rights may be revoked in the absence of a prior trial. They may subsequently be asked to prove their citizenship before so-called Foreigners’ Tribunals.” They stated that NRC update has generated increased anxiety and concerns among the Bengali Muslim minority in Assam, “who have long been discriminated against due to their perceived status as foreigners, despite possessing the necessary documents to prove their citizenship.” While acknowledging the fact that process of updating the NRC of 1951 is purely aimed at listing Indian citizens, the rapporteurs stated that local authorities in Assam are deemed to be particularly hostile towards Muslims and people of Bengali descent...”
