Centre assures more medical seats for state
S. Pangnyu Phom with JP Nadda and others in New Delhi on Saturday. Spl. Correspondent
NEW DELHI, JUN 16 (NPN): Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare, JP Nadda has assured that the Centre will seriously consider increase in quota of medical seats for Nagaland in various medical colleges in India. This was conveyed to Nagaland Health minister, S. Pangnyu Phom, who called on Nadda Saturday at his office chambers here. Earlier, Pangnyu apprised Nadda about the need for more medical seats to students from the state and also about the proposed medical college in Kohima. He justified the demand for additional medical seats
on the ground that unlike most states, Nagaland has no medical college despite growing demands each year. While most states in north east have at least one medical institute and some having at least two or more, Nagaland is still without it despite its long pending demand. It may also be recalled that minister for Higher and Technical Education, Imna Along had also assured the All Nagaland College Students’ Union to arrange additional MBBS and BDS seats for students of the state from next academic session. He had also told the delegation that he would ask for special quota for Nagaland in these courses. Earlier, Union MoS
for Health, Ashwini Kumar Choubey had informed the Parliament that there are 479 medical colleges in the country with an intake capacity of 67,352 MBBS seats. 13,004 MBBS seats have been added in the last three years, he said. Choubey also said that the gover nment is implementing a centrallysponsored scheme for the establishment of new medical colleges attached with district/referral hospitals in 58 districts in 20 states and union territories in underserved areas of the country. There are other centrally sponsored schemes for increasing UG and PG seats in the existing government medical colleges, he said.
CM mourns demise of ex-APO vice president DIMAPUR, JUN 16 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister, Neiphiu Rio has expressed pain over the demise of Kevimedo Rutsa, former vice president of the Angami Public Organization (APO) and former Kohima Village Council chairman. In his condolence message, Rio recalled that late uncle Kevimedo Rutsa was a ‘Rüna Peyu’ in the NNC during the 1950s and was imprisoned for the Naga cause. He also served as area council member of the Northern Angami and a life member of the Bharat Scouts and Guides, Nagaland. Rio said he had the privilege of working closely with late Kevimedo when he (Rio) was the chairman of the Northern Angami area (Cont’d on p-7)
NPF slams NDPP for diverting issues DIMAPUR, JUN 16 (NPN): NPF Saturday ridiculed the NDPP for defending “its master Neiphiu Rio, incumbent chief minister” and described it as a “cheap publicity game” to divert attention from the pertinent issues concerning the Nagas. NPF through its press bureau claimed that being the parent regionalist political party of the state, it was only concerned for the destiny of the Naga people unlike “the yesterday-born political party” NDPP formed by “a bunch of political opportunists”, who would shift their loyalty anytime and would no more be in the political map of Nagaland tomorrow. NPF wondered how NDPP was trying to defend Rio’s June 12, 2018 statement in Delhi where he “clearly declared” that Naga integration was not possible and PDA government would not oppose the Citizenship
Amendment Bill 2016. NPF said it was not concerned under what obligation or compulsion Rio “bowed down” to such stand for the future of the Naga people. It, however, said that since NPF represented the identity of the Naga people it would continue to fight for the rights of the Naga people. NPF alleged that so long Nagaland was ruled by Rio and NDPP party, the future of the Naga people appeared bleak. According NPF, the chief minister announced that PDA government would not oppose the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 since Article 371 (A) was “good enough status to protect the Nagas”. In this regard, NPF asked the chief minister to point out under which Clause of the Article 371 (A) was Nagaland protected from the Citizenship Bill. It also asked how far the
Naga people were protected for the last 55 years under the Article from illegal immigrants in Dimapur and adjoining areas. Further, it asked whether the cabinet had gone through the contents of the proposed Citizenship Bill. Unless the contents of the proposed Bill were discussed in the Cabinet, NPF said how could chief minister “manipulate and try to back track with fabricated language to convince the public.” NPF has demanded that the chief minister come out clearly on why he opposed the integration of the Naga people and supported the Citizenship Bill, which would invite the influx of the illegal migrants into the Naga soil to swallow the Nagas and turning Nagaland into another Tripura state where the tribals were minority at present.
