Shah calls Gandhi ‘chatur baniya’; sparks pol row Amit Shah (File)
RAIPUR/NEW DELHI, JUN 10 (AGENCIES): BJP chief Amit Shah dubbed Mahatma Gandhi as a “bahut chatur baniya”, a reference to his mercantile caste, sparking a political row with the Congress and other opposition parties demanding an apology from him for insulting the Father of the Nation. Shah made the reference to the mercantile caste to which Gandhi was born while telling a select audience of “prominent citizens” in Raipur yesterday how the “bahut chatur baniya” (very shrewd baniya) had rightly advised dissolution of the Congress after Independence. Shah had also said the Congress was not rooted
Khango Konyak set to take over as new NSCN (K) chairman

KO H I M A , J U N 1 0 (IANS): Veteran separatist Naga leader Khango Konyak is set to take over as the new chief of NSCN (K) following the demise of S.S. Khaplang, a source close to the outfit said on Saturday. However, no official announcement has been made from the NSCN (K) yet on the appointment of a new chairman. Konyak, who held the rank of ‘lieutenant general’ in the Naga Army, was elected as vice chairman of NSCN (K) in May 2011. He had undergone guerrilla warfare training in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and in China. Apart from military services, Konyak had held the post of chairman, Konyak Region, and president of the Tuensang-Mon Regional Union.
in any ideology or principles and was sort of a “special purpose vehicle” to secure freedom. Facing flak, Shah today said the import of his comments was heard by the people who were present at yesterday’s gathering. “Those present during the programme heard my comments and the reference in which they were made. AICC spokesperson Randeep Surjewala is yet to answer about many principles of Gandhi ji),” Shah told a media persons. Leading the opposition charge, Surjewala demanded an apology from Shah, BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Calling Shah a “trader of power”, Surjewala said his remarks were “an insult to freedom fighters, their sacrifices and also to Gandhi.” While West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee termed the comments “uncalled for and unethical”, CPI general secretary S Sudhakar Reddy demanded that Shah tender an apology for making the “derogatory” remarks.
Former CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat also hit out at Shah, saying his remark reveals “the contempt the BJP-RSS has for Gandhiji.” Shah had said, “the Congress party... was constituted as a club by a British man. It was later converted into an organisation engaged in freedom struggle.” “People of various ideologies and thinking associated themselves with Congress to gain independence. Congress didn’t have any ideology or set of principles and it was only used as a special purpose vehicle to secure freedom. “And therefore, Mahatma Gandhi, with a lot of foresight -- he was a very shrewd baniya -- he knew what was going to happen in future. He had said immediately after the Independence that Congress should be dissolved.” Mahatma Gandhi couldn’t do that, but now some people are completing the task of dissolution of Congress, Shah added, in an apparent jibe at the present Congress leadership.
Will rehabilitate NSCN (K) ACAUT wants probe on Pillai’s stint cadres if they surrender: Rijiju GUWAHATI, JUN 10 (PTI): A day after the death NSCN (K) chairman S S Khaplang, the Centre on Saturday said all Indian citizens in the Naga rebel group will be rehabilitated if they abjure violence. “We appeal that all the Indian Nagas in NSCN (K) should surrender and return to the mainstream. We will rehabilitate them. Anybody who gives up violence, we will rehabilitate them. We are giving rehabilitation package from the Indian Government. “Anybody who abjures violence and respects Indian Constitution is welcome,” Union Minister Kiren Rijiju told reporters. The rebels should take advantage of the rehabilitation package and return, he added. Rijiju, however, said India cannot talk about Myanmarese citizens, who are part of NSCN(K). The minister said Khaplang was the “the heart and soul” of NSCN(K) and without him, the organisation will be in a disarray. Without any leadership, the organisation will face difficulties. “The objective of the organisation will
honourable and acceptable to all stakeholders; and that this protracted problem be resolved during our lifetime and not to bequeath it to the future generations,” he said In memory of the departed leader, who had dedicated all his life to the cause of the Naga people, Dr. Liezietsu called upon all “to dedicate themselves to strive for peace, harmony and well-being of the entire Naga family so that we and our children can march ahead with the rest of the world as equals in the 21st century and for ever more.” On behalf of the state government and people of Nagaland, Dr. Liezietsu conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members and prayed that Almighty grant them solace and comfort at this hour of grief. “May the Almighty lift up the light of His countenance upon the departed soul and give him peace,
now and forever,” he said. NSCN (I-M): National Socialist Council of Nagalim (I-M) has extended its deep condolence to the bereaved family members of late SS Khaplang, who breathed his last on June 9, 2017. In a condolence message, NSCN (I-M) general secretary, Th Muivah, said “Based on the declaration made by our former Chairman late Isak Chishi Swu on forgiveness and reconciliation, we have forgiven SS Khaplang of all the political mistakes and crimes he had committed, however grave they might be, in the precious name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” Further, Muivah said the NSCN invoked the blessings from the Almighty to give comfort and sustenance to the saddened and pained hearts of the bereaved family and grant eternal rest to the departed soul of the leader.
‘Team Clean Dimapur’ installs indigenous made dustbins
NLA’s PAC verification tour cancelled
DIMAPUR, JUN 10 (NPN): Condolences have poured from cross section of the society including Nagaland chief minister, Naga Political Group leaders and NGOs for late SS Khaplang, NSCN (K) chairman who passed away on June 9. CM: Nagaland chief minister, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu said he was grieved to learn about the sudden demise of SS Khaplang last evening in Myanmar. In his condolence message, Dr. Liezietsu said it was tragic that such an important Naga leader like Khaplang expired considering the fact that the protracted Naga political problem was on the verge of being resolved, and the need for all different Naga political groups to come together to air their views and aspirations to the Government of India in one voice was absolutely imperative. After the group abrogated the ceasefire with
the Government of India in 2015, he said in consultation with the Government of India, the state government had been sending delegations to meet the NSCN (K) leadership in Myanmar to convince them to re-enter into the peace process to find an early solution to the Naga political problem. It was encouraging to learn that Khaplang had conveyed his willingness to have dialogue with the Government provided “issues of substance” were discussed, Dr. Liezietsu stated. However, before things could be taken forward to its logical conclusion, he said it was calamitous that the Naga leader could not live long enough to see the proverbial Promised Land. “I appeal to all grieving Nagas to resolve and dedicate ourselves to endeavour with renewed vigour and determination to find a solution to the Naga political problem which is

never be fulfilled now. So they (rebels) should come back for the sake of the society,” the minister of state for home affairs added. Khaplang died last night following a cardiac arrest at Takka in Kachin state of Myanmar at the age of 77. The minister said that Khaplang was a Myanmar citizen and he had strong influence in Myanmar. “So some of the Indian insurgent groups were taking shelter under the influence of SS Khaplang. So his death is a setback for all dependent organizations,” he added. Rijiju said the Indian government had withdrawn ceasefire with NSCN (K) after banning it in 2015 through a special notification.

DIMAPUR, JUN 10 (NPN): A group of volunteers under the banner of ‘Team Clean Dimapur’ on June 10 morning installed indigenously engineered dustbins along the Church road stretch. Altogether 12 dustbins were installed and 13 more would be installed in the
coming weeks. Team Clean Dimapur has also adopted the T-junction from deluxe point to City Tower and Dobhinullah. It may be noted that Dimapur Municipal Corporation had allocated the team with Rs. 40000, to make the dustbins though
the members had also pulled in on their own to complete the project. Meanwhile, the team has thanked all the volunteers particularly the Nagaland Motorcycle Club who took part in digging the pits to install the dustbins on June 9 night.
D i m apur , J un 1 0 (NPN): After Thursday’s raids conducted by the Income Tax department on the residence and premises of M.K. Rajendran Pillai, who retired as Addl.S.P Nagaland Police six years ago and who has been re-employed under contract continuously as Consultant to DGP Nagaland, ACAUT in a statement has said it could just be the tip of the iceberg. ACAUT media cell said the IT raids on 30 premises of Sreevalsam group belonging to Pillai revealed assets of more than Rs.1000 crore and it was also believed he was the “front man of politicians and bureaucrats in Nagaland” for illegal diversion of central funds. ACAUT said the magnitude of the scam could only be known after a thorough probe to expose the nexus between politicians and bureaucrats.
ACAUT hit out against those involved as “buffoons and scoundrels” who were unable to manage the affairs of the state by allowing “unscrupulous non-locals in the likes of Tinku, Dinnath and Pillai”, to run control and manipulate the state. ACAUT said these persons have no concern for the welfare of Nagas, but who have been given “safe haven to do their nefarious activities of looting and running the show in the state, shaming the entire Naga intellect.” It said the IT raids on the business premises owned by Pillai should serve as a revelation and also a wake up call for IT department in Nagaland including the State Vigilance Commission (SVC). ACAUT wondered what the IT and SVC in Nagaland had been doing all these years. It said it was unfortunate, that in other states
the IT department and SVC were the most feared institutions. ACAUT said in Nagaland SVC was “reduced to mere decorative arm of the state” and the IT a mere Income Tax exemption certificate issuing authority. ACAUT demanded that IT in Nagaland ought to extend help to the probe and should also act on its own to unearth more shady dealings. It also demanded that SVC thoroughly investigate Pillai’s stint in service as consultant and look into his proxy business in Nagaland. Further, ACAUT said corruption in Nagaland has gone beyond limit of sanity and the exposes and revelations no longer “seem to incite anger” on people anymore nor shame on the offender. It urged upon Naga public to wake up from this “evil spell and restore the dignity and pride as a people.”
IT to probe if central funds illegally diverted KOCHI, JUN 10 (AGENCIES): In what seems to be a major scam allegedly involving politicians and high ranking officials in Nagaland, the Income Tax department (intelligence and criminal invesMKR Pillai (File) tigation) in Kochi has unearthed unaccounted money worth Rs 400 crore from a firm owned by MKR Pillai, a former Addl. SP of Nagaland Police and presently a consultant (MT) of the department. Pillai is suspected to be a front man for Nagaland’s politicians and top bureaucrats. I-T sleuths are probing whether government funds, especially central funds for the state, were illegally diverted and later transferred through Pillai. Intense grilling of Pillai is on the cards, the sleuths informed the media. I-T officials also found a truck belonging to
the Nagaland Police parked in front of Pillai’s house at Pandalam. Pillai had been allegedly smuggling currency notes, gold and other commodities to Kerala in the safety police trucks for more than 10 years, the income tax department said after the raids. “Our official met up with Pillai during the raid here. It’s too early for us to give any quantification of the seizure,” an IT official told IANS. Simultaneous raids were conducted in Kerala, Karnataka, Nagaland and Delhi after doubts emerged that Pillai’s Sreevalsam Group, worth Rs 1,000 crore, was involved in suspicious financial dealings. I-T sleuths began investigating after they found that Pillai had declared assets worth of Rs 50 crore following demonetization last year. The net worth of Pillai was found to be disproportionate to his known sources of income. Pillai, who joined Nagaland Police as a constable in Mokokchung in 1971, retired as an Addl. SP. He received the President’s police medal for Meritorious (Cont’d on p-7) Service in 2005.
