8 killed in BJP-TMC clashes in Bengal KO L K ATA , J U N 9 (AGENCIES): Political violence in Bengal took a dramatic turn as the state BJP, following a face-off with the police, prepared to cremate the bodies of the workers who died in Saturday’s clash on the Basanti highway. Hundreds of agitated workers gathered at the spot and preparations had started for a funeral pyre. But the party reversed the decision midway, announcing a series of protests, including a statewide “Black Day”. The BJP wanted to take the bodies to Kolkata and arrange an elaborate ceremony on Monday to pay respects. But stopped by the police midway, they said they would hold the last rites on the highway. Later, the party said it will observe a local strike and a statewide “Black Day” on June 10, and hold a rally to Lalbazar, the police headquarters, on June 12. At least eight persons were allegedly killed and several others injured and missing following a clash between West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP workers in
CNTC lauds PDA govt over IIRC DIMAPUR, JUN 9 (NPN): Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) lauded chief minister Neiphiu Rio and his government for announcing introduction of Indigenous Inhabitants Registration certificate (IIRC) in Nagaland to curb the unabated influx of illegal immigrants into the state. In a statement through its media cell, CNTC also insisted a proper cut-off year while issuing IIRC, so that genuine indigenous inhabitants were not harassed. “Though the issue of illegal immigrants is very serious, we have failed to understand the threat and its implications in the past and have been unable to take any concrete steps in preventing and safeguarding our coming generations from this onslaught despite many special provisions granted to us,” it said. CNTC said it was truly appreciable that the government with its wisdom and vision for posterity had finally understood the ramifications and consequences of unabated influx of illegal immigrants have on “our small fragile population”. Hoping that this would help in controlling the unabated influx into Nagaland, CNTC said it expected the State government to truly implement IIRC in letter and spirit.

North 24 Parganas, sources in both parties claimed on Sunday. While the state BJP sources claimed that five of their activists have been shot dead by the Trinamool backed men and 18 others have gone missing, a senior Trinamool Congress leader alleged three of their party workers have been killed in a bloodied clash that took
place in Hatgachi area under Sandeshkhali Assembly constituency on Saturday evening. Police has so far confirmed deaths of three political workers comprising two from BJP and one from Trinamool Congress in the incident. According to locals, the clash between the two groups started over the forceful removal of BJP’s
flags on Saturday afternoon. It soon took a violent turn and bullets were flying. Clashes between the workers of the Trinamool Congress and the BJP have been increasingly frequent as the battle for Bengal gains momentum. Over the last 10 days, at least three clashes were reported from the state, in which three men were al-

Lungalung, H Zopianga and T Haralu, on the assurance that a university would be established in the land. JVC also pointed to several proposals for establishment of the university received over the years but alleged that the state government either turned these down or shifted the location elsewhere for reason best known to the authorities concerned. The duo said the first proposal came in mid 1980s when NEHU proposed to establish Kohima Science College as a university college under it, along with Pachhunga College in Mizoram. The then authorities turned down the proposal, while Mizoram readily accepted and that today, Pachhunga University College in Aizawl under Mizoram University has become a model university college of not only the Northeast but throughout the country, they said.
The JVC leaders also said recalled that when a proposal for setting up Kohima Campus of Nagaland University came up in the late 1990s, a Site Selection Committee was set up by the government and had recommended Kohima Science College, Jotsoma as the site for the proposed Kohima Campus as the college had the basic infrastructure and congenial educational atmosphere. They also recalled that the district administration had, after negotiation with the villagers, fixed the rate of land compensation at Rs 40,000 per acre, and officially communicated to the village council by the then DC Kohima. However, the duo said that state government again shifted the site to its present location at Merema in 2003-04. They said JVC opined that the new site was perhaps better than Kohima Science College, Jotsoma both in terms of infrastructure and existing educational environment, important factors to be considered while choosing site for any educational institu(Cont’d on p-7) tion.

dustan Petroleum review fuel prices on a daily basis, and any revisions are implemented at the fuel stations with effect from 6 am. The domestic fuel prices are determined broadly by the global crude oil and rupeedollar forex rates. Globally, oil prices rose nearly 3 per cent on Friday, climbing further from fivemonth lows hit this week, after Saudi Arabia said OPEC was close to agreeing to extend an output production cut beyond June and as Wall Street rallied, reported news agency Reuters. Brent crude futures gained $1.62, or 2.6 per cent, to settle at $63.29 a barrel. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude ended at $53.99 a barrel, up $1.40, or 2.7 per cent. NPCC wants LS polls to be declared ‘null and void’ Heavy rains to lash NE states;
Assocham proposes to raise taxpayers’ exemption limit
DIMAPUR, JUN 9 (NPN): Angami Students’ Union (ASU) said it strongly objects and unequivocally rejects the results declared for appointments to grade III posts of Nagaland Judicial Service through a notification issued by Gauhati High Court on March 14, 2019. In a press statement, ASU president Vizokho Zashumo and general secretary Petekhrietuo Kiewhuo said the advertisement mentioned that the policy of reservation would be as per the Nagaland Judicial Service Rules, 2006 (as amended and read with Government of Nagaland notification no. RCBT5/87/ (Pt.II) dated 14th April 2011) that stipulated 25% of all categories of both Gazetted and nonGazetted posts to six tribes of Mon, Tuensang, Kiphire and Longleng.
DIMAPUR, JUN 9 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) on Sunday informed that the party has among several resolutions, decided to move All India Congress Committee (AICC) to take cognizance of alleged EVM manipulation, during the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls, and move the Court to declare the recent election null and void and also demand re-election with paper ballot. In a joint statement, NPCC president K Therie and general secretary Capt. GK Zhimomi said the decision to this effect was made at the general session of NPCC held on June 7, 2019 at Congress Bhavan, Kohima. NPCC said that the verdict of 2019 Lok Sabha elections was beyond the assessment and perception
Further, they said 12% reservation would be made for the tribes of Chakhesang, Pochury, Zeliang and Sumi of Kiphire district with a roster maintained for the said posts. But alleging that all norms of official protocol and conventional processes were violated, the union said it was evident that the selection process and the selected list were a total farce. As such, it announced that it was not in a position to accept the declared results. And until such time a fair and transparent modality of recruitment was not considered for recruitment against these posts, ASU said the result should be considered null and void. Angami Students’ Union hoped that good sense would prevail so as to avoid all unnecessary hassles.
and it was therefore unacceptable. “If not for EVM manipulation and religious polarization, there is no reason why the assessments of various international and national political analysts should go wrong,” NPCC stated. For fear of EVM manipulations, NPCC reminded that 21 political parties had demanded paper ballot but ECI refuted without any acceptable reason. Further, when the political parties demanded 50% verification of VVPAT slips during counting process, ECI flatly rejected rendering use of VVPAT meaningless. NPCC pointed out that the huge victory margin of someone like BJPs Pragya Singh Thakur, currently under trial as terror accused and Godse patroniser, goes to prove that it was hatred against secularism, reli-
DIMAPUR, JUN 9 (NPN): In a major development, Western Sumi Hoho (WSH) has announced that henceforth it would oppose lightning bandhs in Western Sumi-inhabited areas of Dimapur district. This was resolved at a coordination meeting held with all its frontal organisations in Niuland on Saturday. The hoho in a statement issued by its media cell stated that, from now on, any bandh call in the future could be given only after taking WSH into confidence and with its prior consultation, failing which no Tom, Dick or Harry organisation would be allowed to call a sudden downing of shutters and putting denizens of Dimapur into discomfort. According to the hoho, the trend of calling bandhs at the whims and fancies of
gious polarisation and EVM manipulation. NPCC said it was also shocked that Congress ruled states in Hindi speaking belt would be wiped out without the above stated reasons. Taking note of these issues, NPCC said it has lost faith in the election process of Indian democracy. Meanwhile, NPCC while appreciating the decision of Congress president Rahul Gandhi for owning moral responsibility, however, said it was difficult to believe it as people’s mandate, alleging that the verdict was “fraudulent based on EVM manipulation and religious polarisation regulated by a biased ECI in total violation of the Election MCC.” The party therefore resolved to support the resolution of the Central Working Committee (CWC) in rejecting Rahul’s resignation.
organisations was causing lot of hardships and inconveniences not only to the business community, but also to all the residents of Dimapur district. On the recent bandh call given by some students in Dimapur, WSH wanted to know why Dimapurians always had to bear the brunt and suffer for any protest or agitation that took place in Kohima and the “logic of holding an umbrella here in Dimapur when it rains in Kohima”. Asserting that Dimapurians could not be made a scapegoat every time for any kind of standoff or impasse with the State government, the organisation pointed out that being the State’s commercial hub, such practice put travellers, sick people and daily wage earners into immense
The par ty also expressed apprehension that the BJP-led NDA government has moved the nation to a dangerous position especially for religious minorities and oppressed castes. “The feeling of divide is growing in the minds of the people for want of safety and security (surrender and be protected or will lynch you, is the signal all over),” NPCC added. In the given situation, NPCC said that party unanimously decided to make its position clear that any attempt to infringe upon the secular and socialist structure of the Indian Constitution shall not be tolerated and that the party will always uphold the political rights, belief, social practices, language and rich culture of the Nagas as long as it remains a part of the Indian Union.
hardship. Stating that any democratic form of protest should be done by taking one step at a time and pointing out that calling for a sudden shutdown of all shops and business establishments was highly unjustified and uncalled for, the hoho “sternly” warned that if any individual, group or organisation was found indulging in such a practice, they would be dealt firmly as resolved. WSH also reiterated to reaffirm its stand on the earlier resolutions and strictly enforce the land reforms set by elders. Fur ther, the hoho would streamline certain practices like marriage and child adoption for preserving and safeguarding “our cultural and tribal identity”, the statement added.

NEW DELHI, JUN 9 (AGENCIES): Industry body Assocham said it has proposed to raise the basic exemption limit for individual income taxpayers in its pre-Budget memorandum to the government. According to the industry body, the basic exemption limit for an individual taxpayer should be raised to Rs 5 lakh from Rs 2.50 lakh in the backdrop of the inflationary impact over the years. “Considering the inflation over the years, tax exemption limit should be increased from Rs 2,50,000 to Rs 5,00,000,” Assocham’s memorandum to the Finance Ministry stated. The new government would present its first full Budget 2019-20 to Parliament on July 5. K Y M C
