Road sinks near Kohima; traffic diverted
Correspondent
KOHIMA, JUL 8 (NPN): Hundreds of vehicles, especially trucks were stranded after a section of the NH 29 below M/s Avilie fuel depot around two kilometres away from here sank more than ten (10) feet from late night of July 7 to past midnight of July 8. Incessant rains on Saturday coupled with continuous dumping of earth cut from adjacent hill by the side of the road, were cited as primary reasons for the sinking of the portion of the road which also affected two households. According to commissioner & secretary PWD Bendangkokba, who spoke to Nagaland Post at the site, though the road was maintained and monitored by department, it could not take the heavy load of tons of soil dumped by its side and with incessant rains, sank early hours of Sunday. Kohima is now approachable from two alternative routes- via Jotsoma by-pass road or via Peducha-10 mile (Wokha road). While the Peducha-10 mile (Wokha road) can be used by all types of vehicles,

ACAUT urges CM to help local farmers sell produce in Dimapur
RSZ takes serious note of harassment to commuters
DIMAPUR, JUL 8 (NPN): ACAUT has urged chief minister Neiphiu Rio to intervene, assist and facilitate in creation of avenues for local formers to sell their surplus produce in Dimapur. In an open letter to the chief minister, ACAUT co-chairman Simon Kelio and secretary Hetoi Chishi pointed out that though the government was promoting economic self-sufficiency and declaring farmer years, it was ironically unable to provide avenues to local farmers for selling their surplus produce in the markets and towns of the State. They alleged that the local farmers were unable to sell their produce in the markets of Dimapur as mafia-like gangsters had taken over the markets and created monopoly and syndicate

system in connivance with non-local traders. The poor farmers were also at the receiving end of unabated taxation along the way to Dimapur by governmental agencies, various factions of NNPGs, numerous associations and unions, thus making the entire exercise of brining their produce to Dimapur non-profitable, they explained. To buttress its point, ACAUT Nagaland cited the instance of a farmer from Pfutsero being assaulted in Dimapur a few years ago for defying the diktats of the syndicate and trying to sell cabbages in Dimapur market. As Phek district registered surplus produce of organic cabbages that year, the farmers brought them to Dimapur for sale, but were unsuccessful. ACAUT
Nagaland claimed of having intervened and tried to help the farmers in association with Business Association of Nagas (BAN), but the move failed and the whole lot of cabbages were distributed free and the remaining simply rotted. Stating that this year too there was surplus of organic produce in various districts like tomatoes at Longkhum village in Mokokchung district and cabbages in Phek districts, ACAUT Nagaland suggested Rio various measures to provide a congenial atmosphere to the local farmers to tap markets in Dimapur. These include setting up of sabzi mandis in the town, setting up markets in designated areas for local farmers, identifying surplus produce from various districts and (Cont’d on p-7)
DIMAPUR, JUL 8 (NPN): Taking serious note of reports of vehicle theft and unscrupulous persons harassing and threatening commuters along NH-2, the Rengma Selo Zi (RSZ) has formed a Quick Response Team (QRT) to oversee the situation. In a press note, Rengma Selo Zi general secretary, Sokenye Kent while apologizing to the victims who have faced undue harassment, warned of strict action against antisocial elements found loitering around and disturbing the peaceful atmosphere of the area. RSZ appealed to the administration and police to take up the matter on top priority and extended support to the law enforcement agencies to clean the mess.
ticable. For simultaneous polls, either you have to extend or reduce the tenures of some state governments, which is against the spirit of the Constitution and federal structure,” party MP K. Ravindra Kumar said. AAP’s Ashish Khetan, after meeting the Commission, said that for simultaneous polls to happen, the Constitution of India will have to be “mutilated and rewritten completely”. “In sum, the present proposal of the Law Commission seems to be a complete misadventure that will decimate the federal structure. I respectfully submit my party’s whole hearted opposition to the proposal,” DMK working president M.K. Stalin said in writing. Terming it as a “futile exercise”, JD-S spokesman Danish Ali said the ruling BJP was just “testing the waters” through it with no real intentions of reforms in the electoral process. Parties like the Trinamool Congress, CPI, AIADMK, Goa Forward Party and IUML also opposed the idea in their discussion with the law panel on Saturday.

PDA govt’s road show yet to take off Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, JUL 8 (NPN): It is not only pot-holed roads but also roads which have totally been shorn off the bitumen top surface due to years of neglect or lack of drainage etc which are the reasons that have made Nagaland infamous. After the new PDA alliance government under chief minister Neiphiu Rio took over, the cabinet promised to fix the deteriorated conditions of the roads within sixty days of coming to power. The sixty days are over but most of the roads are still in a dilapidated state and that has led to some measure of deep disappointment even if the condition of a number of roads in Dimapur, have improved considerably. However, many colony and village roads, including stretches of the National

Highway have become practically un-motorable. Though the government has promised to bring change in all roads within 60 days, one roadblock appears to be the parallel authorities involved- the National and State Highways fall under the PWD (Highways Division) and the Major and Other District Roads under PWD (R&B); while village roads
fall under the Rural Development department and roads in urban towns under their respective Municipal or Town Councils. EE PWD (R&B) Dimapur, Er. Talitemsu Jamir told Nagaland Post that the first phase of his team’s work to fix the roads that fell under their division, were done. “But please understand that roads that have not been
maintained for many years cannot be completely fixed in two or three months,” he stated. We tried to hire a Hot Mix (equipment used in road construction) but were unable to acquire a working one, which set us back a little, he said. When asked how long the roads would last, Er. Talitemsu said blisters had already started appearing on some of the roads, but PWD (R&B) will be filling up the potholes and performing their different maintenance schedules that falls under annual, routine and periodical maintenance. He however repeated the same problem that has been the chief wrecker of roads -- lack of roadside drainage. He said even if these maintenance measures are followed religiously, lack of drains will only ensure quick deterioration. (Cont’d on p-7)
