NEW DELHI, JUL 18 (AGENCIES): Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Wednesday accepted a no-confidence motion moved by Telegu Desam Par ty MP, K. Srinivas against the BJP-led NDA government. The Speaker notified that the ‘no trust motion’ against four-year old Narendra Modi government will be taken up by the Lok Sabha for debate and voting on Friday (July 20). Making the announcement in the post lunch session, Mahajan said as the no-confidence motion gets priority over other issues, the debate will commence at 11a.m. with no Question Hour on that day. Earlier, immediately after the end of Question Hour, as soon as the motion was moved by TDP MP from Vijaywada, Srinivas, several opposition members including from Congress, Left parties and Trinamool Congress were up on their feet to support it. Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge protested that as largest opposition party, the motion of no trust against the Modi government moved by Con-

gress party should have been accepted. The Speaker said, “I have gone by rules and the ruling of the Chair cannot be discussed here”. A notice for a no-trust motion needs the support of at least 50 MPs. During the Zero Hour, Speaker named all members from the TDP, Congress and NCP among others, who had moved similar no- confidence motion notices. “More than 50 members are supporting the motion, so the leave is granted (to bring in no-confidence motion),” Mahajan said while accepting the notices. “The BJP and the NDA will face the no-confidence motion,” said Ananth Ku-

mar, parliamentary affairs minister. “We are hopeful that we will get support from parties outside NDA as well. It is strange that opposition brings this motion despite the fact that the BJP got majority on its own and today NDA is ruling in 21 states,” Kumar told reporters. Sources in the BJP said the government would get the support of at least 314 MPs in the lower house, which has an effective strength of 535 members. M e a n w h i l e, U PA chairperson Sonia Gandhi refuted the view that the opposition does not have the numbers. When asked about the no-confidence motion brought by her party
among others, she retorted: “Who says we don’t have the numbers?” In 2003, then leader of opposition Sonia Gandhi had moved a no-confidence motion against the BJP government of Atal Behari Vajpayee. The motion, moved ahead of elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi, was defeated by a mile. In 2008, the Congressled coalition faced a confidence vote - in which the government tests whether it still has enough numbers in parliament - after the Left pulled out support over the India-US nuclear deal. To ensure numbers, both the ruling coalition and

Land should be available for roads: Gadkari to state team DIMAPUR, JUL 18 (NPN): Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Shipping Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Nitin Gadkari, strongly suggested that land should be made available for development of roads and there should not be any hindrance to developmental activities. According to a press release by PRO Nagaland House, New Delhi, Gadkari said this in a discussion with a state delegation led by PWD minister Tongpang Ozukum at Transport Bhawan, New Delhi on July 17. The others included minister Temjen Imna Along, adviser- H. Khehovi Yepthomi and PDA chairman Chingwang Konyak. The delegation held a thorough deliberation on issues regarding the improvement and up-gradation of the deplorable roads in the state with the union minister, PRO said. Attention of the union minister was also drawn towards the urgent need for rehabilitation of old and weak bridges in the state. Ozukum and his team
also reminded the union minister about the construction of the 2 lane TransNagaland Highway (Foothill Road) to be taken up in phases, about which the Prime Minister and minister in-charge of MoRTH had been apprised about by chief minister, Neiphiu Rio and deputy chief minister, Y. Patton before. After a patient hearing, PRO said Gadkari responded positively and said that his ministry was willing to extend all help but he also stated that acquisition of land should be the look out of the state government. It may be recalled that Nitin Gadkari on June 13 last had assured a delegation
led by Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio, that the Centre would be declaring more National Highways (NHs) in the state and asked the state government to expedite implementation of the ongoing projects. He also asked the state to submit a list of important roads in the State to the Centre. Gadkari had further informed the delegation that he would be visiting the state to review the ongoing road projects. While urging Gadkari to declare more roads as NHs, Neiphiu Rio had requested Centre to give top priority to road development in different parts of the state as well.
NH terms Manipur CM statement ‘nonsensical’ DIMAPUR, JUL 18 (NPN): Naga Hoho (NH) has termed the recent purported warning by Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh of taking extreme steps if Naga deal hurt Manipur’s interest as “nonsensical”, even as it appealed to both the chief minister and Meiteis to exercise restraint while dealing with the sensitive issue. In a statement, NH president P Chuba Ozukum and assembly secretary K Elu Ndang remarked that they had refrained from reacting to various interviews and press statements of different civil society organisations of Manipur against the ongoing Naga peace process as they believed in brotherhood. However, they said they were perturbed to read the statement of Singh published in the media. NH pointed out that the hoho had time and again clarified that Nagas would never grab anyone’s land, but cautioned that they would never
compromise with or allow any force on earth either to take away “what is ours”. NH recalled that it was taken into cognisance and agreed by both the Centre and Naga people that violence and armed struggle had no place in today’s global context and therefore the ceasefire was agreed upon and Framework Agreement signed between both the parties to peacefully resolve the Naga political issue. NH said it firmly believed that the settlement would definitely usher in peaceful atmosphere in the entire North Eastern region and help develop the region on a par with rest of the world. It was now left to the wisdom of Indian leadership and Naga political negotiators to decide what was best for both and the future of the Nagas, the statement added. Against this backdrop, NH appealed to Metei brothers and sisters to understand and not to hurt the sentiments

NEW DELHI, JUL 18 (AGENCIES): As the process of deportation of foreigners remains a very slow one, a proposal to strip the persons declared as foreigners of their citizenship and providing them with biometric long term work permits is under serious consideration of the Centre. At the same time, the Government is examining the feasibility of using all available technology to improve guarding of the international border to check fresh infiltration. Talking to The Assam Tribune, highly placed sources in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said here that deportation of the persons declared as foreigners by the Foreigners’ Tribunals is a very slow process as the Government of Bangladesh need to accept them as its citizens.
of Nagas and their political rights as both the communities would remain neighbours forever, adding that the Nagas were willing and open to maintain cordial relationship for all generations to come. Reminding both New Delhi and BJP leaderships that the Nagas wanted to have political solution before the Assembly election, the hoho regretted that the polls were nonetheless held against the wishes of the people in February this year. Admitting that there would be various obstacles and hiccups before a final solution to the vexed Naga political issue was arrived at, the apex tribal however urged the Centre not to shy away from its agreed principle to take up the issue urgently during the ensuing Monsoon Session of Parliament. It also urged Centre to make use of the opportune time and come to a logical conclusion at the earliest to the protracted Naga issue.
Cong asks PDA govt to deliver on promise DIMAPUR, JUL 18 (NPN): Reminding the PDA government of its election manifesto that promised “change is coming”, Dimapur District Congress Committee (DDCC) Wednesday demanded that the government live up to the expectations of the people who voted them to the power and fulfil the election manifesto. Pointing out that what was promised and the present scenario was quite the opposite, DDCC president, Bendang, said the condition of roads and bridges was worse. He said most of the bridges have either collapsed or were on the verge of collapsing. Bendang also said that roads connecting to various districts and sub-divisions were also in a very pathetic condition. He said some roads that were constructed could not face the monsoon and have
already been washed away. DDCC said people were facing the worst nightmare in the absence of proper bridges and narrow roads. Congress stated that only potholes were being filled instead of proper road construction. When new government comes, DDCC said people expect development in the form of proper roads and bridges, sanitation, educational institutes, new jobs, set up of new industries etc. However, Congress said it was quite strange that the people in Nagaland were still quiet and lacked the spine to raise their voices. Citing an example, DDCC said development in neighbouring states has reached new heights. “Even a bordering state like Arunachal Pradesh has also left behind Nagaland in terms of development,” said Bendang.
