Fire still ravaging Dzükou valley: NDRF
CM undertakes aerial survey
Correspondent/PTI
KOHIMA, JAN 5 (NPN): National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has expressed concern that the forest fire at Dzukou valley was “continuously increasing its magnitude” and spreading towards the hills of neighbouring Manipur. According to PTI, NDRF spokesman said NDRF has deployed seven teams in the affected areas of Kohima district Nagaland and Senapati district in Manipur to assist firefighters to extinguish the fire. Of the total seven NDRF teams, three are approaching the affected area from the western side near Essi hills in Kohima district. The rest of the team were approaching the area from the eastern side at Mao in Senapati. The fire which initially started from the Southern side of the valley has now spread to the South-Western side burning every tree and other vegetation in its path. The fire, at the Elephant gate has now reportedly spread to Tevirü (Cherry) range and inching closer to human habitat on the extreme West side.
NH urges Centre to announce renewal of CF with Niki’s group DIMAPUR, JAN 5 (NPN): Following the recent decision of the Niki Sumi-led NSCN (K) to renew the cease fire with the government of India , Naga Hoho has urged upon the government of India to “formally announce the renewal of cease fire” with Niki’s group “without any pre-condition” for an inclusive solution. Naga Hoho in a statement expressed its conviction and appreciation of the “matured decision” taken by ‘gen’(retd) Niki Sumi to renew the cease fire but said Nagas were “still in dark” about what was happening between the government of India and Niki’s group. NH pointed out since its inception, it had always strived for peaceful and inclusive “Indo-Naga political settlement” through nonviolent means to resolve the long drawn political movement. NH said it was concerned when NSCN (K) abrogated the cease fire in 2015 which it signed with the Centre in 2001. For this, NH said its delegation went to Myanmar in 2016 to meet SS Khaplang leader of undivided NSCN (K) but could not meet him but conveyed to his emissary to renew the cease fire to carry forward the peace process for solution.

Nagaland Post reporter at ground zero spoke to NDRF operational in-charge (Nagaland side) and spokesperson asst. commandant, Santosh Kumar Singh. He said the NDRF was using everything at their disposal to douse the fire that was destroying a large tract of forest ecology and biodiversity in the area. Singh lamented that the biggest hurdle affecting the operations was the strong wind blowing from different directions. Turbulence caused by the strong winds also affected the ‘Bambi
bucket operation’ being carried out by the Indian Air Force. Singh also disclosed that three NDRF teams with around 30 personnel each were engaged in the operation to help douse the fire. He said that the NDRF personnel along with all other agencies and SAYO volunteers were able to make a fire line cutting of over 3000 metres at various locations, since it was the most effective way besides aerial support. Southern Angami Public Organization (SAPO)
president Vimeyol Theyo, who also trekked to the base camp said that SAPO was very concerned since the fire was burning out all its ancestral land, which is a great resource to its people. Theyo said SAPO was ready to provide manpower besides help in other form to ensure that the fire was completely doused. He also informed that 10 volunteers from each of the 13 Southern Angami villages were regularly deployed at ground zero to assist in the fire fighting.
Health ministry ready to roll out COVID vaccine in around a week NEW DELHI, JAN 5 (PTI): The Union Health Ministry on Tuesday said it is prepared to roll out COVID-19 vaccine within about a week, but a final decision on the launch date is yet to be taken. At a press briefing, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said healthcare and frontline workers need not register themselves for the vaccination drive as their database has been uploaded on the Co-WIN vaccine delivery management system in a bulk. The provision of registration and editing of data would arise while immunising the population priority group, he said. “Based on the feedback from the dr y-r un of vaccination drive, the health ministry is ready to introduce COVID-19 vaccine within 10 days from
the date of emergency use authorisation,” Bhushan said. However, while responding to a question on the rollout of vaccines, Bhushan said the final decision will be taken by the government. The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) had on Sunday approved Oxford-AstraZeneca’s Covishield and indigenously developed Covaxin of Bharat Biotech for restricted emergency use in the country. NITI Aayog member (Health) Dr V K Paul said an optimistic scenario is emerging with the pandemic situation in India consistently improving in terms of active cases and new deaths declining. “Let’s hope this trend will continue. In terms of the new UK mutant issue, this variant has entered this
country and 71 people have been isolated. This shows our capacity to mount that kind of a scientific investigation. “Also, we have not seen emergence of any untoward cluster in the country as of now which is reassuring,” he said. On the two vaccines that have been granted approval for restricted emergency use by the DCGI, Paul reiterated that all scientific and statutory requirements have been met and regulatory norms followed while granting permission and authorisation. “No vaccine today in any country has got regular authorisation. The world is exercising this option using scientific criteria and thinking to take decision in larger interest of public health and humanity,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio undertook an aerial survey of the Valley on Tuesday to assess the damage caused by the raging fire as well as the operations being carried out to contain and douse it. However owing to inclement weather the chopper carrying Rio and his team could not land at either of the two helipads constructed in the valley for the first responders. According to a statement issued by the press & media of the cell at CMO, during the aerial survey, Rio witnessed the patches in the valley which were burnt and the portions where the fire was still raging. Rio also took note of ground operations being carried out by personnel of Central and State agencies like NDRF, State Disaster Response Force, forest department, Nagaland Police, etc, along with Souther n Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) volunteers for making traditional fire line cutting to contain the fire and protect

Describing the foothill road as “a dream project of the Nagas”, the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organization (ENPO) has urged the state government to take up the project with the Centre for inclusion as a “priority project” and also to at least take up construction of motorable road at the earliest. ENPO through its media cell stated that the snail pace construction of “foothill road” connecting Khelma with Tizit , which started way back in 1974, has put the Nagas at the mercy of neighbouring state (Cont’d on p-8) due to frequent bandhs and

crows in Indore have been found with the H5N8 strain since the pathogen was first detected in the city a week back, while in Rajasthan, after Jhalwar, birds in Kota and Baran were found with the infection. However, no cases have been reported yet in Maharashtra, which shares borders with Madhya Pradesh. Officials in Himachal Pradesh surveyed the area around the Pong Dam Lake sanctuary in Kangra district to check the spread of the flu to domestic poultry birds, a day after samples of dead migratory birds there tested positive for H5N8. Till now, 2,700 migratory birds, mostly barheaded geese, have been found dead in the lake area
and samples have been sent for testing, state animal husbandry officials said. In Kerala, the operation to cull birds in and around a one-km radius of the affected areas in Alappuzha and Kottayam was launched a day after results of samples tested at the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal confirmed the outbreak of the bird flu in the two districts. Rapid response teams, set up by the administration, began culling ducks, hens and other domestic birds as per guidelines, officials said. In Indore, the presence of bird flu was first detected on December 29, when about 50 crows were found dead on the Daly College
campus of the Residency area, and tests run on two of the carcasses confirmed the presence of the pathogen. Jammu and Kashmir sounded an alert and started collecting samples to check the health of winged guests flocking to the Union territory during winters, officials said as neighbouring Himachal Pradesh reported cases of bird flu. Joint teams of the animal husbandry and wildlife departments on Tuesday visited the Gharana wetland in the outskirts of Jammu and collected 25 bird droppings for testing to ascertain whether any of the birds are infected with the avian influenza, officials said. Tamil Nadu stepped up surveillance on inter-state borders and announced a contingency plan for the management of possible human cases. Karnataka health min-
suming the construction and further appealed to the firm to complete the bridge at the earliest. Meanwhile, the committee has directed all heavy trucks and goods carriers plying on the aligned foothills road to cautiously use the road to avoid further damage and obstructing the movement of smaller public vehicle. It also urged the log truck and stone crusher operators to maintain the road for all vehicles in their area of operations.
Include foothill road as ‘priority project’: ENPO tells govt blockades imposed by various organisations. ENPO said that foothill road would cut short travel time connecting many districts with Dimapur. It, however, expressed regret that the foothill road project has been left out in the recently announced road projects by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) in Nagaland. While extending its deep appreciation to the chief minister for his commitment and keen interest in the foothill road project, which was revived in the year 2013, the organization
also expressed gratitude to the NFHRCC for their “commendable job thus far” and assured to extend its support in their endeavour. According to ENPO, the earth cutting has been completed from Tizit to Dimapur covering Mon, Longleng, Mokokchung, Wokha and Dimapur districts. It said that the Doyang bridge was also on the verge of completion. Further, it said that the state government has also submitted for the approval of the “Trans Express Highway (Foothill Road).
