Another first at the ceremony was a 122-member marching-cum-band contingent of the Bangladesh armed forces taking part in the parade. The Bangladeshi tri-services contingent was the first marching contingent to walk down the ceremonial boulevard. Known otherwise to witness huge bustling crowds across many age groups, the annual ceremonial event at Rajpath was scaled down this time in view of the coronavirus pandemic, with

spectators’ size drastically cut to 25,000 from about 1.25 lakh last year. From members of contingents to spectators, everyone wore masks, the audience maintained the mandated distance while sitting, and standing spectators were not allowed. The marching contingents’ route was also curtailed and they stopped at the National Stadium instead of following the regular route all the way to the Red Fort. Fort, the day unfolded in scenes of contrasts. One that Indians have seen for seven decades and the other that seared itself into collective memory with its imagery of protesters demanding a repeal of the three farm laws storming the Mughal era monument, the centrepiece of India’s Independence Day celebrations. Clashes broke out in multiple places, leading to violence in well-known

landmarks of Delhi and its suburbs, amid waves of violence that ebbed and flowed through the day. While there were no exact estimates of how many farmers were hurt, Delhi Police officials said 86 of their men were injured through the day. Of these, 41 were injured at the Red Fort. A protester died after his tractor overturned near ITO, one of the major flashpoints of trouble. In a statement, the

Rampant extortion has severely undermined State’s growth: Ravi

Governor Ravi taking the salute on the occasion of the 72nd R-Day.

‘Politics by gun has fragmented the Naga society’ Correspondent

KOHIMA, JAN 26 (NPN): Nagaland Governor, R.N. Ravi expressed concern that rampant extortions in the State has created a sense of fear among businesses and entrepreneurs, which has severely undermined the economy and growth of the State. Addressing the 72nd Republic Day programme at Secretariat Plaza here on Tuesday, Ravi pointed out that “the menace of rampant extortions under the guise of illegal taxation by anti social elements has not yet been fully curbed though

police and security forces have been taking action against such elements.” Despite Nagaland being rich in natural resources and endowed with one of the finest human resources, Ravi lamented that the people have not been able to reap optimum benefit of these as well as various progressive schemes of the Central and State governments “–because some extra constitutional entities in the guise of espousing the Naga national cause have queered the pitch for the people and the Government and kept the peace and progress at bay.” “The Government of India has taken several political initiatives for its enduring resolutions from time to time. The latest initiative since the last 24 years could not fructify as yet due to

unrealistic intransigence of some people who are unwilling to forsake the politics by gun,” he stated. Ravi also went on to point out that more Nagas died in fratricidal and factional killings by armed groups who believe in the power of the barrel of gun than in clashes with security forces in the last 50 years. Ravi said the politics by gun has fragmented Naga society, pitting neighbours against neighbours, khels against khels and tribes against tribes. It did not even spare the church for their honest initiatives to usher peace in this land, he said. (Full speech on p-6) On the occasion, Ravi also unfurled the National flag and took the salute of the parade. The parade was led by dy. comdnt, 10th IR, Nikho Venuh and 2 i/c, asstt. comdnt, 15th IR, Ayangla Pongen. Ravi also inaugurated the stalls set up by various departments. Other highlights include- dance display by Women Resource department, Fusion Music- ‘Run Monday Run’ by TAFMA, cultural dances by Khiamniungan, Rengma and Angami cultural troupes.

USLP demands removal of NCD to go ahead with meeting I M A P U R , J A N 2 6 next date of hearing and DC; CWS backs decision D(NPN): A day after the Di- the parties would maintain

DIMAPUR, JAN 26 (NPN): United Sangtam Likhüm Pümji (USLP) has demanded removal of Kiphire deputy commissioner (DC) Ajit Kumar Ranjan within seven days, failing which, it warned of initiating its own course of action and declared that in the event of any eventualities, the organisation should not be held responsible. In a press release, USLP president T Seopi Sangtam said this was the demand of both the organisation and general public, insisting that the DC should be removed for resetting the working relation between the district administration, civil society organisations (CSOs) and the public. Sangtam strongly condemned the alleged unethical and ignorant attitude of Ranjan towards USLP general secretary during the Aspirational District Committee meeting held at the DC’s chamber on January 22. As a committee member, the general secretary was seeking some clarification with regard to implementation of CSR funding under the Aspirational District Programme. However, he alleged that the DC asked general secretary to leave the meeting for reason best (Cont’d on p-8) known to him.

mapur Tribal Hoho Forum (DTHF) directed its respective councillors not to attend the NCD meeting as it would amount to contempt of court, the Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) Tuesday affirmed to hold its councillors meeting as proposed on January 27, 2021at 11am at its Council Conference Hall NyamoLotha Road, Dimapur. In a press release, NCD vice president (council bench) GK Rengma and general secretary Thsapongkyu Sangtam claimed that the Guahati High Court, Kohima bench issued an order dated January 22, 2021 suspending the order dated October 19, 2020 passed by the Civil Judge, Senior Division Dimapur and also the impugned order dated December 16, 2020 passed by the Principal District Judge Dimapur in Civil appeal No.3/2020 be kept suspended till the

status quo. The Naga Council Dimapur has, therefore, requested all the councillors to attend the meeting positively. NCD asserted that like any other civil society it was governed based on predefined set of rules and regulations. The council said it was conscious that a matter was subjudice before a court, but as an apex body having equal respect for other body or organization, it was hard for NCD to take in when other organization/ body dictates and directs its functioning. It said that any issue or matter has to be reasoned and resolved through sittings and meetings. NCD said it has convened the meeting taking into consideration a matter in hand, which has to be made aware and informed its bonafide councillors.

DIMAPUR, JAN 26 (NPN): Naga People’s Front Legislature Party (NPFLP) has appreciated and welcomed Niki Sumi-led NSCN (K) for “reviving the abrogated ceasefire agreement” with the Government of India. In a communique, the NPFLP said it was the “right decision at the right time” when the peace process between the Government of India and the Naga negotiating groups was expected to come to a logical conclusion. The party stated that it has always been its desire that all Naga political groups should come together and join the dialogue for one solution and one agreement. NPFLP maintained that it has put in all effort to bring every Naga nationalist group on board so no one was left out when the final moment arrives. It reminded that after NSCN (K) abrogated ceasefire agreement in

2015, the then chief minister TR Zeliang, during DANIII, had written to NSCN (K) collective leadership requesting to come back and resume ceasefire with the Government of India. In 2016, NPFLP said the DAN-III government had sent a six-member team comprising of Naga Hoho and ENPO to meet SS Khaplang, chairman of NSCN-K, after obtaining requisite clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs. It said that the joint team of Naga Hoho and ENPO undertook assignment to Myanmar from January 24, 2016 till February 2, 2016. While in Myanmar, it said the joint team called on five Naga MPs of Myanmar on January 26 2016; Myanmar Union Minister, U Aungmin on January 27, 2016; and Emissary of the Ceasefire Monitoring Group, NSCN (K) at Man-

dalay, Kyaw Win Swe on January 31, 2016. Further, NPFLP said a formal letter signed by eight representatives and addressed to SS Khaplang was submitted to the Emissary, Kyaw Win Swe appealing for review and resumption of ceasefire with the government of India. Besides, it said the joint team also met Vipin Sharma, the Consul at the Consulate General of India, Myanmar and highlighted the prevailing state of affairs. “This was all initiated with the true spirit of inclusiveness to include all the Naga groups in the peace process,” NPFLP said. Asserting that today its long-revered aspiration has come true, the NPFLP expressed firm belief that the Centre “will not miss this opportunity” but come up with positive approach to settle the long-protracted Naga issue at the earliest.
