Faced expansionist move, our valiant soldiers foiled it - President Kovind misapprehensions but the government is singularly devoted to the farmers’’ welfare,” he said. On the country’s efforts to fight COVID-19, the President said an effective response to the pandemic would not have been possible without the Constitutional value of ‘’Fraternity’’ among the people of the country. He also took pride in the fact that India was called as “pharmacy of the world” for supplying medicine to several countries to contain sufferings across the globe. Paying tributes to the
20 Indian soldiers who laid down their lives at Galwan valley in eastern Ladakh last June during clashes with the Chinese troops, the President said the past year “was a time of adversity, and it came from many fronts.”Kovind said the nation shall remain grateful to those brave soldiers. He said adversity often plays the role of a great teacher and makes people stronger and more confident. With that confidence, India has taken great strides in several sectors. “Economic reforms have continued apace and have been supplemented by long-pending reforms in the areas of labour and agriculture through legislation. The path to reform at the initial stages may cause misapprehensions. However, it is beyond doubt that the Government remains singularly devoted to farmers’ welfare,” he added. Paying tributes to the farmers, the President said “A grateful nation is fully committed to the welfare of our farmers.”

KOHIMA, JAN 25 (NPN): Along with rest of the country, the 11th National Voters’ Day was observed in Nagaland too on Monday. On the occasion, the State election department organised several programmes in all district headquarters, sub-divisions and polling stations. Speaking at a programme held at Capital Convention Centre here on the theme “Making Our Voters Empowered Vigilant, Safe and Informed”, chief secretary J Alam called upon all to remember the countless number of people who are silently working behind the scenes to facilitate the process of registering everyone and making them eligible to vote in elections,
besides contributing to conduct free and fair elections. He remarked that conducting elections was a mammoth exercise and a lot of issues were involved. And since the voting was the basis of what kind of government was elected, he said it was very important to continuously educate voters to be fully informed about the promises and policies the political parties and candidates make before the elections. Alam further asserted that the very fact of making 18 years as eligible to vote indicated that there was more power in the hands of the youth. He, however, reminded that with the power comes with responsibility. Therefore, he encouraged the youth take active part in the democratic process. (Cont’d on p-8)
NEW DELHI, JAN 25 (PTI): Nagaland Lokayukta Justice (retd) Uma Nath Singh Monday told the Supreme Court that he was willing to submit his resignation as head of the ombudsman as suggested by the top court, provided the state government or others are restrained from initiating any kind of action or “defaming him in media” based on the pending plea. The factum of filing of the note, containing willingness of Justice Singh to resign, was brought to the notice of the bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde by senior advocate Vikas Singh, the counsel for the retired judge. The bench, also comprising justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian, had earlier asked the senior advocate to take instruction on the possibility of Lokayukta resigning from the post. “In terms of suggestion of this Hon’ble court, the respondent (Lokayukta) is willing to submit his res-
ignation upon the dismissal of the writ petition (filed by the state government in the apex court) on the following terms and conditions,” the note said. The apex court has now fixed the hearing on the plea of the Nagaland government, which has raised questions over the functioning of Lokayukta in the state, next week. Justice Singh, the former Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court, said in his note that he “submits his resignation” due to “unpleasant circumstances and a very hostile environment” and he was unable to continue as the Chairperson Lokayukta, Nagaland, forthwith. “This court may treat this as his resignation and may pass orders accordingly,” it said. The note of submission said that Nagaland or any other authority or person “shall not use or refer to any material or averment placed on record in the present petition or connected with the state government for initiating any kind of action, complain or proceedings or defaming him in media or any other manner to his privileges, status (professional, official or otherwise).” It also urged the top court that nobody should be allowed to
“tarnish the image” of Justice Singh and only factual reporting, confined to the content of the apex court’s order be permitted. The Registrar General of the Gauhati High Court and the Chief Secretary of Nagaland and Commissioner/Secretary to the Governor be directed to ensure taking custody of articles supposed to be handed over by Lokayukta to his office, it said, adding that this would be needed for his “safe and graceful exit” after the resignation. The ombudsman said he has “no objection” if a compromise is arrived at in a criminal case involving his one of the earlier personal security officer by a trial court at Kohima. Earlier, the top court had wondered as to how the Lokayukta of Nagaland would discharge his duties in the North Eastern state while sitting in national capital. The state government, in its plea, has urged the apex court to pass appropriate direction in exercise of its power under Article 142 of the Constitution “to ensure that the institutional integrity of the post of Nagaland Lokayukta and the spirit” of the Nagaland Lokayukta Act, 2017 “are preserved”.
DTHF directs councillors not to attend NCD meet DIMAPUR, JAN 25 (NPN): Dimapur Tribal Hoho Forum (DTHF) has directed its respective councillors not to attend the “so called NCD proposed meeting”, which has been convened on January 27, since it would amount to contempt of court. The decision was made during its meeting held on January 25 at Tourist Lodge Dimapur, attended by 12 tribes out of 19, the forum said. The members also deliberated the Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) issue and agreed in principle the report and recommendation submitted by the peace committee report after detail deliberation for implementation. It also resolved to convene the meeting of all councillors and tribal hoho forum members. The forum also selected Zhato Angami as the sessional convenor and Wanthang Rengma as the sessional secretary of DTH. Meanwhile, the meeting began with obituary reference to Ghokheto Chophy, NCD president and members paid respect to the departed Naga leader.
NMA welcomes Niki’s decision for CF DIMAPUR, JAN 25 (NPN): Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) has welcomed the decision of Niki Sumi-led NSCN to have a ceasefire with Government of India and return to the peace process. Recalling how their peace team had reached out several times to them in Myanmar over the years for cessation of hostilities and come forward for peaceful negotiations, the association’s president Abei-ü Meru and secretary Lochumbeni Humtsoe in a statement said they believed that the return of Sumi would strengthen the peace process. They admitted that it would not have been an easy decision but they said this would also lighten the burden of families and children harassed on many occasions by government agencies. They also appealed Cenrte to withdraw the bounty
on Sumi and ban on his organisation for bringing an enduring peace and a fruitful negotiation. Meanwhile, claiming that it had been dedicated peacemakers and peace builders in Naga areas and reached out to all NPGs and that the call for no more killings, “Shed No More Blood,” had been its slogan for bring peace into “our shattered land”, NMA also questioned the statement of NNPGs in December 2020, branding civil society organisations, including NMA, as being tutored by NSCN (I-M). The association said Naga women have been courageous, standing up and questioning incidents of violence as well as meeting all NPGs in an effort to bring an inclusive peace. It added that generations of Naga women have contributed to nation building and Naga cause. Mentioning that it
had a clear stand on Naga rights and history and that the need for peace had been an integral part of its initiatives, NMA questioned what kind of nation “we are going to have”, if women’s contribution towards bringing peace was not respected. “The Naga nation belongs to all of us and, as Nagas by blood, we have risked our lives for years, searching for peace amongst our armed brothers as well as reaching out to the highest Indian authorities to bring an inclusive peace,” the statement asserted. NMA prayed that the New Year would usher in goodwill and peace amongst all those who profess and yearn for true peace. “Let God touch the hearts and minds of all Naga leaders to be united in ensuring we stand on the truth of our history and bring just peace and an equitable world for our children,” NMA said.
