Modi may lose if oppn unites: poll

NEW DELHI, JAN 24 (AGENCIES): Congress can turn the tide in its favour in the Lok Sabha election if Rahul Gandhi can convince Mamata Banerjee, Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav to join hands with him and fight collectively against the BJP. This is the finding of the India Today-Karvy Insights Mood of the Nation poll. According to the India Today-Karvy Insights Mood of the Nation poll, the NDA would be nowhere close to the magic figure of 272 that a political party or alliance needs to form the government. According to the Mood of the Nation poll, the NDA would win 237 seats, a massive drop of 99 seats compared to the coalition’s 2014 tally. The staggering nature of NDA’s loss can be understood from the fact that the Bharatiya Janata Party crossed the figure of 272 on its own in 2014. The Mood of the Nation poll predicts massive wins for Congress-led UPA. The UPA would win 166 seats while parties that are not part of either the NDA or the UPA would win 140 seats. For the UPA, this is an increase of 106 seats compared to its 2014 tally.

The only solace for the NDA in this Mood of the Nation poll is that its vote share would be higher than the UPA’s. But even that silver lining is not without a set of worry -- the Mood of the Nation poll forecasts a drop in vote share for the BJP-led NDA. The UPA would see a rise in its vote share. In terms of vote share, the India Today-Karvy Insights Mood of the Nation poll shows that the NDA will get 35 per cent votes, the UPA plus TMC, SP and BSP is expected to get 44 per cent vote share. The others meanwhile will get 21 per cent votes, the poll shows. These numbers, by the way, hold true only if the NDA and the UPA remain as they are right now. The numbers are based on the following

compositions: NDA: BJP, All India N Rangaswamy Congress, Apna Dal, Bodo People’s Front, DMDK, JD(U), LJP, PMK, National People’s Party, RPI (A), SAD, SDF and Shiv Sena UPA: Congress, DMK, JD(S), National Conference, JMM, Kerala Congress (Mani), IUML, NCP, RJD, RLD and TDP. Others: AAP, AGP, AIMIM, AIADMK, Forward Bloc, TMC, AIUDF, BJD, CPI, CPI(M), INLD, PDP, Kerala Congress (Joseph), MNS, NLP, RSP (RSP is with the Left alliance in West Bengal and with the UPA in Kerala), TRS, YSRC, Independents and SP-BSP-RLD alliance in Uttar Pradesh The Mood of the Na-

tion poll comes just months before the Lok Sabha elections are to be held. The predictions of the Mood of the Nation poll will be a cause of worry for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his top lieutenant, BJP chief Amit Shah. A hung Parliament would mean that the NDA would need to scramble to get support from non-UPA parties. This could lead to demands that somebody other than Narendra Modi be prime minister. On the other hand the poll by ABP News-CVoter Thursday projected that the NDA led by Modi will emerge as the largest group in the Lok Sabha polls in the next few months but will fall short of a majority required to rule. The ruling BJP-led alliance is forecast to win 233 parliament seats of the 543 at stake, the poll by ABP News-CVoter said, short of the half-way mark of 272. On Wednesday, another survey showed the BJP facing a rout in the most populous Uttar Pradesh state which sends the largest number of representatives to parliament and holds the key to which party forms a government.

More students’ bodies to boycott R-Day

DIMAPUR/KOHIMA, JAN 24 (NPN): Various students’ organizations in Nagaland have decided to respond to the call made by NSF to boycott the “Indian Republic Day” celebrations on January 26 across Nagaland and Naga inhibited areas of Manipur. Speaking to Nagaland Post, NSF president Kesosul Christopher Ltu informed that the federation will deploy volunteers on January 26, to check whether students were adhering to the boycott call. NSF general secretary Imtiyapang Imsong said NSF, in protest against the CAB, has hoisted black flags in all areas under its jurisdiction since January 12. ASU: Angami Students’ Union (ASU) president Visako Rino informed Nagaland Post that the union will show solidarity with NSF in boycotting the Republic Day celebrations. ASU said it was appalled by the move of the Indian government and the lackadaisical attitude of not hearing the plea of the North Eastern people, which has threatened the very existence of the distinct cultural minority of India. ASU appealed to every right thinking citizen to refrain from participating in the

R-Day celebration and also directed all the educational institutions and students within its jurisdiction to not participate in any of the government activities/events related to the celebrations. ANCSU: All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) president Katho P. Awomi confirmed its full support to the boycott call by NSF, saying ANCSU strongly opposes the citizenship amendment bill. ANSAM: All Naga Students’ Association Manipur (ANSAM) president Joseph Adani also informed Nagaland Post that the association has directed all its 14 units and two subordinate bodies to strictly implement the direction of NSF to boycott the Republic Day celebration in all the Naga inhibited areas of Manipur. SKK: All Sumi Students Union(SKK) has informed that it will respond to the call by the NSF against the Citizenship Bill by boycotting the “Indian Republic Day” celebration, in protest against the CAB. SKK president Atokiho Sumi said SKK will boycott the R-Day celebrations in all Sumi inhabited areas to show their “deepest resentment” against the Government of India for passing the Citi-

zenship Bill. SKK appealed to all students, educational institutions, and concerned citizens, to not participate in any government activities/ events related to the R-Day celebrations. ENSF: Eastern Nagaland Students’ Union (ENSF) along with its six federating units-- CCSU, USSC, KSU, PSC, YAA and KSU, have decided to independently boycott the forthcoming “Indian Republic Day” celebrations. In a press note, ENSF president Sepili L Sangtam and general secretary Imtichoba Chang expressed dismay at the BJP-led NDA government for trying to legalise illegal migrants at a time when the people of the state was demanding detection and deportation of illegal migrants. Affirming the need to protect the cultural identity, ENSF warned that if the proposed amendments in the citizenship act were not withdrawn, “it will be a death knell for the indigenous people of Nagaland.” ENSF also questioned the state government for not having the political will to oppose the CAB and warned this would have future ramifications in the region. WC urges Nagas to isolate defectors ENPO, NH oppose CAB Tension along Nagaland-Assam border DIMAPUR, JAN 24 (NPN): Working Committee (WC) of Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) through the Media Cell has highlighted the issue of defections within various NNPGs while the focus of Naga people, tribal bodies and civil societies was on the “ongoing political dialogue” between NNPGs and government of India in Delhi. Terming defections as “a menace degrading the Naga cause”, WC maintained that there was an urgent need for all NNPG leaders including Khango-led NSCN (K), tribal bodies and GBs to “jointly identify and isolate defectors, who are vying for high positions in various political groups. WC insisted that all defectors “must be sent back to where they came from” adding, increase or decrease in membership would not impact outcome of ongoing negotiations. Further it said defectors do not deserve “respect or honour from any corner”. Reiterating that in a “national struggle” thousands in both civil and military wings face hardships; WC pointed out the “true patriots do not defect or desert” since doing so was a “treachery accompanied by curse.”

WC cautioned that defectors cannot claim seniority nor contribution to Naga national service since their names would be erased form service records the day they defected. Defection was not only a crime but “makes a person cheap and untrustworthy” in the eye of public, tribe, clan, friends and that children of defectors “cannot escape shame and stigma attached” said WC. In view of the urgency and status of the ongoing talks, where Nagas were yearning for honourable and acceptable solution, WC urged all tribes, hohos, clans and families to reach out to their own as well as different political groups against defection. It described defectors as “rats gnawing away at the hard earned fabric of Naga unity” and who should not be “welcomed like heroes within NNPGs fold or outside.” WC urged general public in towns and villages to understand the negative impact and social disharmony brought by defectors and therefore appealed to NNPG leadership, tribal bodies and GBs to “jointly identify these elements, de-affiliate them from Naga political arena and treat them as persona –non-grata.”

DIMAPUR, JAN 24 (NPN): Even as the Progressive Democratic Alliance (PDA) coalition government in Nagaland adopted a “wait and see” policy with regard to the BJP-sponsored controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) 2016 which was passed by the Lok Sabha and awaits the nod of the Rajya Sabha; besides the opposition NPF various organisations in Nagaland such as NTC, CNTC have demanded a special session of the assembly to pass the resolution for opposing the Bill. Eastern Nagaland Public Organisation (ENPO) and Naga Hoho have also demanded a special session of the assembly to adopt a resolution opposing the Bill. ENPO, 6 federating units oppose: Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organization (ENPO) and its six federating tribal bodies on January 23 resolved to urge the state government to out rightly reject the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) 2016 which was passed in the Lok Sabha, after considering the adverse effects of the bill on the future of the Nagas. In this regard, ENPO president and general secy., presidents of Chang Khulei Setshang, (Cont’d on p-8)

aminations held every year, he pointed out that only students from private schools featured in the top 20 list and lamented that government schools had very little to show. While speaking on the disparity in salaries of teachers in government and private schools vis-à-vis their output, Zehol said despite government schools appointing post graduate teachers for Mathematics, private schools had to con-

tend with graduate teachers. Yet most of the government schools underperform. Zehol further revealed that the felicitation programme held for toppers every year at Raj Bhavan in Kohima, where teachers and principals are invited, often opened the Pandora’s Box in relation to performance of private and government schools. Dr H.H. Chishi also took on the Naga Hoho of the latter’s indifference to the role of the Nagas in WW-I, questioning why it was not interested in the history of Naga Labour Corps and “only interested in who founded the Naga Club.” “We expected the Naga Hoho to strike at the right time. They are only interested in who founded the Naga Club,” he said, while also categorically stating
